Makhteshim Agan and Fungicides
While probably best known to UK buyers for its extensive,
high quality Alpha range of generics, MAUK also has an
expanding range of branded products.
In the past the majority of these have been herbicides e.g.
Falcon, Goltix and Hurricane, but insecticides such as
Mavrik feature strongly and last autumn the company
introduced Prego and Gusto – two high quality
molluscicides.
While fungicides have perhaps been slower to emerge from
the company’s product pipeline, 15% of all UK sales last
year were fungicides and the company has a
comprehensive list of products which, thanks to an
extensive development pipeline, is set to grow over the
coming years.
Indeed, the UK operation now has 13 fungicide actives and
20 fungicide products registered in the UK including
prochloraz and tebuconazole.
However, it is the latest of these that is likely to make the
biggest mark – CORTEZ, the UK’s first alternative
branded epoxiconazole – which is launched this year.

EPOXICONAZOLE from MAuk
CORTEZ is the new ‘gold standard’ epoxiconazole from
Makhteshim-Agan for exceptional, high level, preventive and
curative activity of key foliar diseases in winter cereals.
CORTEZ acts by inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis thus
interfering with fungal cell membrane synthesis.
Strong against the rusts, and one of only two fully effective azoles
against Septoria tritici, it's a 'must have - must use' fungicide for T1 and/or T2 sprays.

HGCA work over 10 years confirms that epoxiconazole is the
most consistent triazole in dose rate trials against the key
disease Septoria tritici.
Many triazoles are now less effective than they were,
particularly at lower doses.
Epoxiconazole stands out, alongside the newer triazole,
prothioconazole, in providing the most effective control of the
UK’s number one disease Septoria tritici.

The 2006 graph shows the shifts in efficacy of the weaker
triazoles, but epoxiconazole is still giving 95% control at

– What the Experts Say
On the basis of evidence available, Bill Clark – now Head
of Brooms Barn Research Station – talking in advance of
the 2007 spraying season – concluded that:-
“The level of control of Septoria tritici given by the azole
fungicides tested was extremely variable, with some
treatments giving only 40-50% control.
“Both epoxiconazole and prothioconazole showed
impressive control of the disease and attained
almost 100% per cent Septoria control at the full
label rate."
His comments are backed by HGCA director
of research Professor Graham Jellis
Professor Jellis recommended the fungicides prothioconazole
and epoxiconazole in conjunction with chlorothalonil as most
effective in controlling the Septoria disease.

There’s a very wide range of activity of
current triazoles against Septoria tritici.
Under high disease pressure many are
not sufficiently active to give
adequate control of Septoria if used
alone. Epoxiconazole and
prothioconazole are clearly highly
active, even when used alone.
"Even the best active ingredients are now
substantially less effective when applied at doses below
label dose. However performance appears to be stabilising.
"Recent results suggest that growers should base Septoria
control on an effective azole applied at robust doses in a 2 or 3
spray programme, the main sprays being normally T1 or T2."

EPOXICONAZOLE – Supports
Disease Prone Varieties
Septoria spp. and the rusts are likely to be the key diseases
this spring.
CORTEZ, epoxiconazole from MAuk, is ideal for controlling
these diseases, particularly in susceptible varieties.
Most modern varieties have incomplete disease resistance
ratings that leave them vulnerable to rusts or Septoria tritici.
With 65% of the UK wheat area in rust susceptible varieties
this year, it is essential that growers use comprehensive
fungicide chemistry to protect yield and quality.

CORTEZ – Registration Trials
MAuk commissioned 12 trials with Agralab in Denmark to
compare CORTEZ with the leading brand of epoxiconazole.
The below trials demonstrate that CORTEZ gives excellent
disease control over a wide range of diseases and crops.
No phytotoxicity was observed in any of the trials.
Vigour scores of 100% were recorded in all trials.
Both products increased green leaf area which led to an
increase in yield and quality.
Trials demonstrated that CORTEZ behaves the same way as
the leading brand of epoxiconazole and is safe to cereals.

CORTEZ – Danish Trials
CORTEZ has been widely tested to demonstrate equivalence
with standards.
At the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences, the world
renowned plant pathologist Dr Lise Nistrup Jørgensen has
tested CORTEZ alongside the leading brand of epoxiconazole..
The new formulation of epoxiconazole, CORTEZ, from MAuk
was screened for efficacy on cereal diseases.
According to Dr Jorgensen, both products gave similar control of
the diseases present in the trials which were Septoria tritici and
yellow rust in wheat, and net blotch in barley.
“The yield responses from the two products were also similar and
were not significantly different,” she says.
