EDITOR’S NOTE
Message From
Honda Malaysia
As you may already know, Honda has overcome a challenging period
after Japan’s earthquake disaster. Although we continued production
at reduced capacity from April to July, Honda Malaysia, along with our
associates in Japan, worked tirelessly to ensure a quick recovery.
As a result, we managed to announce full recovery from August
onwards.
This is an important milestone for us, especially since we are
celebrating Honda Malaysia’s 10th Anniversary this year. We are
very grateful to all of you, our valued customers, who have
remained supportive through the years, and more so during this
challenging period. As we track our journey for the past 10 years
in Malaysia, we found that our competitive advantage lies in the
‘Advanced Technology’ associated with our products and the
‘Challenging Spirit’, which comes from turning our passion into
quality initiatives. Rest assured that there will be more exciting
activities announced in the coming months which will reflect our
values stronger than ever.
Indeed, the challenging spirit is an important driving force in
everything we do. We were deeply moved when we saw the same
spirit echoed at the KL Marathon 2011 among 20,000 participants,
including our associates who ran. It was the first time Honda
Malaysia contributed to such a monumental event by providing
various Honda fleets as marshal cars but what stirred us were the
participants’ challenging spirit in completing the race.
That is not all. We also recently met with some of our Honda Dreams
Fund scholars and were inspired by their transformation. This year
marks the end of our 5-year partnership with UNDP for the Honda
Dreams Fund, where we awarded 100 youths with a non-binding
scholarship to pursue their dreams. We were reminded once again
how simple opportunities truly make a difference in our society.
For Honda, our dream remains in developing advanced
technologies that meets our society’s mobility needs while
protecting the global environment. We certainly look forward to
charting new milestones with you.
I wish you a happy journey with us.
Honda AND YOU: Owner’s Story
Walking the Talk
Tham Keng Yew is a savvy, straight-talking 30-year-old with affable,
boyish looks that belie his reputation as CEO of Socialwalk, a runaway
success that has led to much acclaim since its inception in 2008.
For the uninitiated, Socialwalk provides B2B business matching at
conferences and trade shows. “What we really wanted to do was to
bring business to everybody. We wanted to connect people, because
when you do that, business happens,” Keng Yew enthused.
In just two years, Socialwalk has catapulted into the global arena,
powering trade shows with big industry players the likes of Messe
Dusseldorf and Messe Frankfurt. It has been featured by tech giants
TechCrunch and Mashable; and lauded by SingTel as one of Top 50
Apps in Asia. All these, from a man who once knew nothing about
web development and events.
Back when he was pursuing a PhD programme in the States, he was
offered a lifetime opportunity to work at Silicon Valley. Needless to say,
the self-professed doer leapt at the chance and closed a chapter on
his studies. But he never stopped learning. Keng Yew confessed to
learning everything from scratch, from starting a business through
seed-funding to developing products.
As he would gladly point out, Socialwalk was not of his making alone,
but rather a manifestation of immense dedication and teamwork. The
key to building the right team though, lies in enlisting individuals who
address each other’s weaknesses and leverage on mutual strengths.
He also had to face the challenge of funding his fledgling start-up.
The big break came in the form of a RM150,000 grant by the
Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC). Since then, it was an
unending challenge of clinching new businesses and breaking new
grounds by constantly improving software and work processes.
So what is his secret to success “It is timing, ability and preparation,”
Keng Yew attributed. He professes to be an individual who meticulously
organises and rationalises his decisions to achieve a clear direction. He
also believes that techno-preneurs should always experiment with new
ideas, to stop over-analysing and to set things in motion.
And that is what his Honda Civic 2.0 i-VTEC has also helped him
achieve. Citing reliability as a crucial factor in a vehicle, Keng Yew
decided against a Korean marque and invested in the Civic instead.
Being a stickler for punctuality, it allowed him to truly focus on his
business endeavours without being bogged down by needless car
worries.
With such an impressive feat attained through Socialwalk, it would be
easy for the young trailblazer to rest on his laurels. But there is much
to do. As he pointed out, Socialwalk will soon expand to Bangkok. “I
would say that entreneurship has opened up a whole new world for
me, and I really cannot wait to see what else it has to offer me.”
Honda AND YOU: Dealer’s Story
Creating joy
in the local
community
Free health and dent al check-ups were the main highlights at the
Healthy Life Carnival which attracted a crowd of more than 3,000.
A ‘Healthy Life Carnival’ was hosted with much fanfare by Wanija Classic
at their dealership in Negeri Sembilan recently. The one-day event
attracted a lot of buzz in the local community who were all invited through
mailers, SMS-es and flyers to residents around the neighbourhood.
“We have been planning this since May,” Puan Azizah says. “We
organised a health awareness campaign last year and based on our
customers’ positive feedback, it was a great success. We decided to
do something similar this year but somehow the activities snowballed
and we had our hands full in preparing a massive carnival that involves
the state departments of health, agriculture and others!”
The ‘Healthy Life Carnival’ aims to reach out to the local community
through a variety of health-related activities like free health and dental
check-up, a blood donation drive and stress management demonstration.
“We take responsibility in our community’s health and wellbeing, so
everything is offered for free. It is our approach to reach out to them
and try to make a difference,” adds Puan Azizah A. Karim, Managing
Director of Wanija Classic.
More than 3,000 people thronged the carnival for various other
activities, games and prizes organised to engage adults and children
alike, such as drift cars demonstration, Fixie bikes showcase, lucky
draws and a remote control car competition. New Honda models were
also available for test drives but what made the experience unique was
the Sales Advisors who were proactively educating drivers on safety
driving tips and techniques.
It certainly benefited old and new customers as many Honda owners took
advantage of the free inspection provided at the service centre that day.
For those that needed parts replacement, a 30% discount was offered for
selected parts. And on top of that, rewards like discount vouchers and
hampers were snapped up by customers who made bookings.
Ultimately, Wanija Classic’s dream is for more people in Negeri
Sembilan to experience the joy of owning a Honda. “When they think
of buying or servicing cars, hopefully they will remember us first,”
enthuses Puan Azizah.
A fun line-up of activities – games, drif t car
and Fixie bike demonstration kept the youths
thoroughly engaged.
Breakthrough
Powered by compressed air, this coast al cruiser is inspired by modern day roller coasters.
The Honda Air aims to maximise the open-air experience.
08 | with dreams

The Honda Air Concept,
a vision for the future
Conventional hybrid or performance vehicles weigh about 1,000 kg or
more, so how about aiming to achieve a new class of alternative fuel
performance vehicle that is half the weight Sounds far-fetched The
Honda Air Concept takes a leap forward and shows that with dreams,
nothing is impossible.
Developed by the Honda Advanced Design Center in Pasadena, CA.,
the Honda Air Concept was unveiled at the L.A. Auto Show Design
Challenge last year. Powered by Dreams, the Honda Air Concept gives
a glimpse into the future of lightweight and alternative-powered vehicle.
This concept vehicle is Honda’s answer to the design challenge
theme, which seeks to address society’s shift toward minimising
consumption of the earth’s resources. The Honda designers were
challenged to envision an efficient, lightweight, four-passenger vehicle
(not exceeding 1,000 lbs.), that is both comfortable and safe, while
delivering satisfactory driving performance without sacrificing the
styling consumers demand.
other parts of the vehicle, are mounted to it (the chassis). Weight is
also further reduced with the utilisation of a hub-less wheel and drive
system instead of heavy drive train parts.
Seating panels are glass reinforced and tyre features urethane
composition. Together with the skeletal sub-frame, all these worked
together to decrease weight and increase the dynamic performance of
the vehicle at the same time. Meanwhile, the main tanks and reserves
can be conveniently and safely filled using a Honda generator/air
compressor at home or tyre filler at any petrol station.
Weighing less than 454 kilogrammes, this four-passenger vehicle
is equipped with panels and fairings made from vegetable-based
polymer. Such eco-friendly innovation exemplifies Honda’s vision of a
zero-emission vehicle for the next generation.
However, this is not your average concept vehicle. It is built on the
vision of a comfortable, safe, four-passenger vehicle that has good
driving performance. The designers of Honda Air Concept drew
inspiration from modern roller coasters and skydiving wing suits. It
features a cockpit and package that is similar to that of a modern roller
coaster, aimed at maximising the open-air experience.
With such an advanced embodiment of style, performance and most
importantly, the environment, we can only imagine where a cruise in
the Honda Air will take us in future.
This concept vehicle is powered by compressed air and pneumatic
regulator system. Tank pressure is regenerated by turbo vacuums
and external airflow, taking the vehicle further by increasing boost for
approximately 100 miles!
The lightweight of Honda Air Concept was achieved through a
combination of cutting-edge structural re-engineering and material
change. The chassis is also the master tank while the seats, like all
A ver y lightweight, high performance mobile rocket with zero emissions
Not an impossible dream.
Honda DNA
The impressive RA271
marked the dawn of a new
era of motorspor ts in 1964.
Formidable victory guided by
Honda’s challenging spirit
1963/64 1965 1968
Manuf acturing began in 1963
for the ver y first F1 engine,
RA270, leading to the debut
of the RA271 race machine
at the German Grand Prix in
1964. The machine produces
a maximum power of 220hp at
11,500rpm.
Honda enters F1 with the
RA272. At the same time, the
S600 Coupe was launched
and was considered a
breakthrough in advanced
technologies, thanks to
Honda’s racing exper tise.
A 3-litre formula race machine,
the RA302, was launched in June,
which produces a powerful 430hp
at 9,500rpm. However, various
issues led Honda to declare
its temporar y withdrawal from
racing activities in November.
“R acing impr o v e s t he br e e d .”
S oic hir o Honda
When Honda’s automobile business started in 1963, the first model
released was a sports car, S500. That was hardly surprising as
Soichiro Honda had been quick to start the engineers on researching
and developing race engines from the onset of their motorsports
involvement in the 50’s.
Honda’s earnest obsession in the field of motorsports started a long
way before their first declaration to race in the Isle of Man in 1953.
More than intent to show its capabilities in motorsports, it was Soichiro
Honda’s ingenious way of steering Honda engineers to push the limits of
performance in product design, from motorcycles to the world of cars.
During this post-war period, there was also the growing need to instil
the competitive spirit among Honda associates. A steady cultivation of
10 | with dreams

A successor of the NSX-GT, the HSV-010
hints at Honda’s future direction in
developing race machines.
1980’s 1990’s 2000’s
Af ter a 15-year hiatus,
Honda returns to F1 in 1983.
The aim for success this time
was more carefully planned
and by 1988, Honda had set
a new world record of 11
consecutive victories in F1.
In 1991, the innovative NSX was
introduced and later on used in
racing for the 24 Hours of Le
Mans and Japan GT Championship.
As a challenge, Honda entered the
strictly regulated Indy Car Race
in 1993 to push their performance
limits, right after withdrawing
from F1.
Honda re-enters F1 racing in
2000 and withdrew by 2008 after
scoring a victory in 2006. The
significance of racing in Super
GT grew remarkably, with the
NSX-GT machines evolving into
the current HSV-010 GT, designed
to be a high performance
“ultimate cornering machine”.
The winning formula
through the decades
Rewarding team work and
the challenging spirit.
this discipline marked the dawn of Honda’s now valued “Challenging
Spirit”, which guides the company in everything they continue to do.
The path to glory came when Honda bravely announced entry in
Formula One (F1) in 1964 without any automobile racing experience.
But that did not deter their spirit in producing the first race-ready
F1 machine, the RA271. The car failed to run smoothly but Honda
continued to race in full public glare, testing and developing its
machine as the race season progresses. In 1965, Honda claimed its
first F1 victory in Mexico.
It has been more than four decades and Honda’s very own race
machines have since evolved to map new challenges in other significant
races like the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, Indy Car Series and Super GT.
Celebrating Dreams
Honda Malaysia marks milestone of inspiring youths and transforming their lives for the past 5 years
Norimanira a/p Nordin or affectionately known
as Nori comes from a small orang asli village
in Tasik Chini, Pahang. She dropped out of
school at age 10 due to financial difficulties
and was a painfully shy 23-year old when
Honda Malaysia met her in 2010.
The Nori that you meet today will blow you
away. She has blossomed into a confident,
young lady who is more than ready to take up
a challenge and is on her way to become a
hair-stylist. Nori is one of the recipients of the
2010 Honda Dreams Fund (HDF) scholarship.
“This scholarship gave me a chance to realise
that I can achieve a lot even for a village
girl. Before this, I was not keen on studying.
Now, I have gained the self-confidence to go
further in life. Even my family and friends have
been very supportive,” said Nori.
12 | with dreams
Like Nori, Arvinraj Batumalai is also a
HDF scholar in 2008 who is now pursuing
an Honours of Medical BioScience at
Monash University. He has a soft spot for
underprivileged youths simply because he
was one of them and could empathise with
their struggles. Today en route to his dream
of becoming a lecturer, he is passionate
about making science exciting to others. He
was a part-time tutor while waiting to pursue
his postgraduate programme.
He is very clear on how he wants to leave his
mark on society. “I am gracious to Honda
Dreams Fund for extending my scholarship
to an Honours programme. This will enable
me to pursue a Masters or PhD. It is a first
step towards becoming a lecturer, one that
students find engaging,” he says.
Ogustian Anthony, scholar of HDF 2009, is
also keen on making a difference in the lives
of children. His ultimate goal is to be a football
coach to children. Having been raised in
an orphanage, he did not dream of going to
college because funds were lacking. Today,
he is a proud Diploma graduate in Football
Studies and is now pursuing a degree in
Business and Sports Management.
The HDF workshop instils the candidates with
lifelong lessons on perseverance, leadership
and teamwork.

This year is the fifth year for the Honda
Dreams Fund Scholarship, a journey that
will never be forgotten by all those involved.
In these 5 years, the Honda Dreams Fund
received close to 7,000 applications and had
the precious opportunity to reach out to 300
the Honda Dreams Fund has provided the
Honda MALAYSIA NEWS
10
years
of delivering joy and
empowering dreams
This year, Honda Malaysia celebrates 10 glorious years in operation.
Looking back, it has been a journey fuelled by rapid, continued progress
and marked by momentous achievements that have also set numerous
benchmarks in the local automotive industry.
Since inception in November 2000, Honda Malaysia has espoused
the basic principles of Respect for the Individual and The Three
Joys – the Joy of Buying, the Joy of Selling and the Joy of Creating.
Rooted in Honda’s worldwide philosophy, Honda Malaysia has always
challenged itself to fulfil customer’s expectations through its products,
technologies and services, ultimately becoming a company that
contributes to the local society.
From the start, it was imperative that products of the highest quality
yet at a reasonable price are available to Malaysians. This became a
dream come true to more than 200,000 customers today when Honda
Malaysia established its Pegoh Plant back in January 2003, which
successfully rolled out four models, including the Accord, CR-V, Civic
and City. The year 2003 also marked Honda Malaysia’s inaugural
showcase at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show, with the
NSX-GT as the highlight of the event.
By 2011, Honda Malaysia’s robust dealer network spans nationwide
with 59 Honda Dealers dedicated to create a holistic customer
experience in sales, service and spare parts. To inculcate service
excellence at all Honda dealerships, the annual Tech Challenge was
inaugurated in 2006, pitting Honda representatives against each other
for skills and knowledge advancement.
Besides Tech Challenge, Honda Malaysia has embarked on the
challenge of refining the local team’s expertise by forming the Honda
Malaysia Racing Team (HMRT) in 2002. Since their first Malaysia
Merdeka Millennium Race (MME) in 2003, HMRT has competed
passionately to nurture Honda’s Challenging Spirit, earning them the
“Team of the Year” title in 2004 and rising above challenges to clinch
Class A victory and finish 2nd Place Overall in MME 2005.
2003
The NSX-GT electrified racing
enthusiasts with a show of
grace and performance at the
2005
The HMRT challenged the odds
and celebrated the Merdeka
Millennium Endurance Race
with top honours, including
Class A title victor y since 2003.
2006
As par t of Honda’s environment al
commitment, Honda Malaysia par tnered
with WWF -Malaysia to initiate the Save
the Sumatran Rhino campaign.

Perhaps the greatest joy lies in knowing that Honda Malaysia has truly
achieved brand satisfaction in the minds of Honda owners nationwide.
Since 2001, Honda Malaysia has constantly dominated brand and
consumer choice awards in the automotive sector, most notably being
the Autocar Asean Awards, Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands and J.D.
Power and Associates awards.
Staying true to the Power of Dreams, Honda Malaysia has also carried
out environmental and educational efforts to further contribute to the
society. The Honda Dreams Fund awards non-binding scholarships to
underprivileged yet deserving youths, providing them with a chance to
pursue tertiary studies and realise their lifelong ambitions. On the other
hand, Save the Sumatran Rhino campaign was pivotal to ensure the
protection of the endangered Sumatran Rhino.
Each and every Honda initiative is intrinsically tied to Soichiro Honda’s
founding beliefs, no matter how big or small it is. Moving forward, Honda
Malaysia intends to surpass its current achievements and continue
to spread joy to people around the country through its technological
advancements, service excellence and philanthropic efforts.
2008
Being the first humanoid
robot with superior walking
technology, ASIMO won the
Honda CAR CARE
A safe journey is
just a click away
If you have never practised the habit of fastening your seatbelt, think again.
We ar ing it right
To ensure that your
seatbelt can efficiently
protect you from the
inevitable, consider these
simple recommendations of
wearing seatbelts the right way.
In 2005, out of 192 seatbelt-related road accident fatalities recorded, a stunning
173 were unbelted rear passengers. By not buckling up, the force of rear
passengers slamming onto front seats can even propel front passengers
towards the dashboard. Since January 2009, the Road Safety
Department (JKJR) has stressed upon the urgent need for rear
passengers to buckle up, adding that fines of RM300 will be issued
to those who fail to comply.
Honda’s 3-Point ELR (Emergency Locking Retractor) and ALR
(Automatic Load Retractor) seatbelts* with pretensioners and
load limiters are designed to reduce fatalities and the
severity of road injuries. Through sensors, pretensioners
retract the belt to prevent the occupant from surging
forward. Load limiters lessen belt-inflicted damage
by absorbing the force and bringing you to a stop.
Drivers and passengers
Wear shoulder belt across the chest and
away from neck and face; lap belt across
the hips.
Never wear shoulder belt under the arm
or behind your back.
Remember, fastening your seatbelt can
make a difference between life and
death. So practise it with your family
and friends, the right way.
*ALR seatbelt features are
only available in selected
Honda models.
Pregnant mothers
Wear lap belt below belly and snug on hipbones,
never across or above belly.
Wear shoulder belt comfortably across chest.
Children
Consider fit ting a child seat in the rear seat, avoid fit ting at the front passenger
seat and ensure that the belt is worn securely around the seat.
Infant-only seats (for 9 months
and below; up to 9kg) should be
fit ted facing the rear of the car.
Infant-toddler seats (for 9
months – 4 years; 9 – 18kg)
should be fit ted facing the
front of the car.
Booster seats (for 4 – 11 years;
15 – 36kg) should be fitted
facing the front, with shoulder
belt securely across
the child’s chest,
not neck.
Honda ON ECO
Did you know
that your appliances
consume 20% of energy
in standby mode
Home appliances, when not in use,
should be switched off accordingly. In
doing so, millions of households in the
country can curb energy wastage, as
electricity in Malaysia is still generated
by burning fossil fuels, releasing
emissions that are harmful to our
health and environment.
Remember, if you are leaving your
electronic devices unattended for long
periods of time, avoid putting them on
standby. Turn them off for a brighter,
cleaner future.
Power Saver Tip:
If you use a washing machine for your laundry, set it
for a cold wash to save on water heating. The cooler
the water, the less energy you use.
WHAT’S ON Honda
We were there when the nation ran
History was made in June this year when more than 22,000
participants from all walks of life convened at Dataran Merdeka,
Kuala Lumpur, for the KL Marathon 2011. It was the biggest turnout
yet for the annual marathon.
In an effort to share Honda’s vision of mobility, Honda Malaysia
provided a range of its exciting fleets like the Honda Insight, CR-V
and Freed to facilitate the mobility of the organised and community
of runners. As a company built on the Power of Dreams, the values
advocated by the founder, Soichiro Honda, was also passionately felt
amongst the crowd of runners who were united with one mission – to
complete the marathon.
For Mr. Yoichiro Ueno, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer
of Honda Malaysia, the marathon was a fantastic opportunity for
people to share the joy of running with a goal. “It brings the whole
community together and they run to challenge their strength, both
physically and mentally. We are proud to be there and support this
huge community of runners, whom we believe reflects Honda’s
Challenging Spirit.”
challenges at the KL Marathon 2011. Daphne Chen, a Sales &
Marketing associate, is an avid runner who has been participating in
the KL Marathon since 2009. She said, “I am motivated by the sense
of accomplishment when I cross the finish line and when you do,
you will carry that same spirit through other challenges in life. To me,
everyone is a winner at a marathon.”
Indeed, the challenging spirit is instilled in every associate to deliver
their best. As a regular runner himself, Mr. Ueno is a believer in not just
pushing one’s limits but also firmly supports cultivating a healthy body
for a healthy mind. “As cars become a necessity in our daily lives, people
make less time for physical exercises. We hope that by supporting the
KL Marathon, it motivates people to embrace the joy of exercising.”
Among the tens of thousands of runners were Honda Malaysia
associates, each of whom were aiming to overcome their personal
Production gets a
boost as Honda raises
its commitment to
customers
On 11th March 2011, Japan was hit by a 9.0 Richter-scale earthquake
and tsunami. In its immediate aftermath, Honda production plants in
Japan suspended regular operations to focus on nationwide recovery
efforts, including the severely stricken areas of Tochigi where Honda’s
R&D Centre is located.
After a testing month in restoring damaged facilities, Honda Motor
Co., Ltd. announced that manufacturing plants in Japan had resumed
operations by mid of April 2011 while they worked diligently to stabilise
production flow. Here in Honda Malaysia, swift efforts were made to
monitor the effects closely from the time the catastrophe hit. During
this challenging period, temporary adjustments were made to reduce
production capacity in the Alor Gajah, Malacca plant, while striving to
minimise impact on dealers, customers and associates.
According to Mr. Yoichiro Ueno, Managing Director and Chief
Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia, associates in Japan have
been working tirelessly since the disaster to recover the supply of
component parts in Japan. With production gathering pace in Japan,
Honda Malaysia started to resume 100% production output sooner
than expected. New bookings of Honda Insight resumed in June 2011
and the company has also intensified operations by increasing man
hours on weekdays and Saturdays to increase production volume
since 1st August 2011 onwards.
“On behalf of Honda, we would like to express our deepest
appreciation to our valued customers and business partners for their
support, patience and trust in us since the disaster. We also apologise
for the inconveniences caused during this period,” said Mr. Ueno. “We
would also like to assure all our customers that we remain committed
to meeting the needs of our customers and to ensure their satisfaction.”
New warehouse to serve customers
more efficiently
Honda Malaysia will soon be relocating its warehouse to Bukit
Jelutong, Shah Alam, to strengthen operations and ensure a more
efficient delivery process of spare parts to Honda dealers, especially in
the Klang Valley.
to maximise natural lighting to save on electricity while a Jack Roof is
integrated to release hot air and improve indoor ventilation. This is part
of Honda’s efforts to not just realise a sustainable society but also to
achieve a more comfortable working environment for associates.
The new warehouse is accessible to major highways in the Klang
Valley and is within 30 minutes distance by truck to market centres.
With more than 60% of the overall spare parts deliveries made in
Klang Valley, the central location will not only shorten the delivery
process to these dealers but also increase the volume of delivery to
dealers nationwide.
Consisting of 28,000 square feet, the new warehouse will be built over
three phases and upon completion, will cater to the storage of parts
for the after sales market of Honda cars in Malaysia.
According to Mr. Yoichiro Ueno, Managing Director and Chief Executive
Officer of Honda Malaysia, sales volume has grown immensely in
the last three years, contributing to a 1.4% increase in market share.
“Opening a new warehouse at a strategic location is a natural course
of action as we constantly seek for ways to reduce cost and increase
efficiency in order to serve our customers better,” he said.
The company has invested a good deal of resources on the new facility,
scheduled to be operational by the 2nd quarter of 2012. The warehouse
is also designed to be energy efficient to reduce overall CO 2
emissions
and comply with environmental standards. Skylight technology is used
