Honda AND YOU: Owner’s StoryA MOTHER’S LIFE LESSONFOR THE SOULLai has been an ardent crafter for aslong as she could remember. Whether itis quilting, bead work or cross-stitching,she does it all with the dedication andgentle touch of a doting mother. “I lovegardening and getting busy with mycrafts, such as making beaded jewellery, handmade coasters and quilted covers, simply for personal fulfilment.”Being a parent to three children, however, became a huge responsibilityso she has less time to spend on herhobbies. But Lai has a sentimental visionof being a parent. “Whatever you do asa parent, your children are watching. If you take care of your parents, yourchildren will practice the same,” shesays thoughtfully. “I do not ask for muchfrom them. I just want my children togrow up honest and trustworthy, and toraise their own family and appreciate lifeas a parent.”For someone who had an early tasteof the working world as an AssistantResearch Officer for seven years, careertook a backseat after her twin daughterswere born. “They were premature at birthand taking care of them was a challenge.Financially, it was also a struggle forboth my husband and I but we didall we could to monitor their growthclosely and began cultivating strictdisciplines, just to ensure that they werealways protected because they were sosusceptible to illness.”Sharing her promise to her family bringsa tear to her eye. She does not divulgemuch but you know it is strength andselflessness that permeates her innerself, making her glow with a gentlebeauty. You would not realise that sheis actually carrying a permanent scar onher face as a result of a tragic accident10 years ago.“My husband bought me a local sedanfor our 13th anniversary and within aweek, I reversed by mistake and rolleddownhill very quickly. The car fell past afenced wall and overturned on a lowerground. My earring got caught in theseat and was tearing up the right sideof my face,” she describes painfully.“After the incident, I count my blessingsdaily for surviving and my husbandimmediately got me the Honda CR-V,which I much prefer because of its greathandling and safety features.”With her three children in universitiesabroad now, would she be lonely drivingin a big car? “Hardly,” she exclaimswith gleaming eyes. “I look forward tohaving some time for myself and for myhusband. I can now resume my hobbiesand start travelling. We should travel toexplore countries far away when we arestill able.” Life is short, she reminds us.04 | with dreams with dreams | 05

Honda AND YOU: Dealer’s Story“Operations here go onsmoothly because ofgood teamwork.”The team of Service Advisors are well-preparedin ensuring that customers expectations are met.Dealer Owner of Peringgit Sri Motor, Ong Kah Hong, remainsmodest despite the dealership’s tremendous improvement.Service Manager, Lim Ping Hwa (far left), andSales Manager, Bernard Lim, with some of theirSales and Service Advisors.Dealer attributesrobust growthto resilience andgreat teamworkAs the owner of a Honda authorised dealer, you know you have made itwhen you have all the services under one roof. Ong Kah Hong was oneof the earliest founders to set up a Honda service centre on the stretchof Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur. What started off as a business toservice car owners around the neighbourhood in the 80’s has expandedto include a showroom upstairs, more service bays and a Body & Paintcentre. Still, Ong is humble about the growth of Peringgit Sri MotorSdn. Bhd.“Most of the customers come here for after sales service. We just keepdoing what we are supposed to do, which is to ensure customers aresatisfied, and it ultimately helped us to achieve our goals,” he shares. While Peringgit has been recording a steady growth in sales, he is notone to rest on his laurels as he aims to reach new customers outsideof its district.“We set new targets every year and I am thankful for Honda Malaysia’ssupport and guidance in improving our competency. Even though wehave been around for a while, competition gets stiffer each year. Thebusiness climate is also not easy to predict as no two headwinds arethe same. We have to work hard to improve customer and employeeretention,” he explains. An average of 80 to 90 cars gets serviced here each day. With thatvolume, everyone in the team needs to be performing efficiently to keepcustomers happy. A free shuttle service to Mid Valley is also available butfor customers who are waiting, they are welcome to use the workstationswith complimentary Wi-Fi and enjoy a free flow of snacks and hotbeverages. Beyond that, the Service team sends scheduled servicereminders to customers and follow up with an after-service call to ensurethat customers’ cars are running optimally.“Operations here go on smoothly because of good teamwork,” addsLim Ping Hwa, Service Manager. “Our staff turnover is very low and wepride this as our strongest asset. With all our collective efforts, we hopeto achieve higher productivity this year.”He believes that when a team member is faced with a difficulty, everyoneshould work together to resolve it. “However, we need to be even moreunited in 2011 because our performance will be evaluated differently. Wescore a point in Honda’s performance indicator only if a customer gradesus as ‘Excellent’, which is our biggest challenge,” he shares animatedly. For Sales Manager, Bernard Lim, the dealer owner plays a significantrole in the operations. “Gaining the trust and independence from Ongis something we absolutely appreciate. When it comes to meetingcustomers’ expectations, prompt action is crucial. It helps that both Limand I are given the authority to make the right decisions, whether it is forthe employees or customers.”This year will be all about enhancing Honda and Peringgit’s reputationamong Malaysians, he emphasizes. “Each of us here is committed toplay an active role in increasing customer loyalty. The exciting thing hereis we have got a great product that is highly valued. We just have toinvest our time in customers and employees to move forward.”06 | with dreamswith dreams | 07

BreakthroughIt took years of effort and a dedicated team to realise the first Hondaelectric vehicle, the EV Plus, which rolled out of the factory in 1997.The preservation of the global environment by then had becomemore pressing. Now, a decade later, the dream of owning an electricvehicle will soon be within reach with the innovative Fit EV.The charging stand for the Fit EV Concept is designed to be convenient andeasy to use. Driver simply swipes a card in front of the screen and connects thecharger to the vehicle to begin charging. Battery recharging is accomplishedusing a conventional 120-volt outlet that charges up to 12 hours, or using a240-volt outlet that charges up to six hours.Honda Fit EV ConceptElectric VehicleA DREAM REALISEDWhen Honda explored the concept ofbattery electric vehicles in 1988, thecompany had begun to envision an ageof “clean energy” in the 21st centuryalthough research in alternative energyvehicles was scarce at that time.“Honda’s long history with electromotive technologies has enabledus to understand customer requirements,” said Takanobu Ito, HondaMotor Co., Ltd. The Fit EV’s urban commutingcapability will be a perfect addition to the full-function mobility of theplug-in hybrid and FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle.”Using the same 5-passenger layout found in the Fit/Jazz hatchback, the Fit EV Concept hints strongly at the direction and styling forHonda’s upcoming production Fit EV all-electric vehicle, which willbe introduced to the U.S. and Japan in 2012. The electric vehicleincorporates a high-density motor derived from the FCX Clarity fuelcell electric vehicle and features a 3-mode electric drive system thatis adapted from the CR-Z sport hybrid technology.Adding to the fun driving experience, there is also the interactivecoaching system that helps drivers maximize even more batteryrange. RACING DNARetracing theNSX’s legacyEvolution of NSX1983 – 1989Honda made its anticipated return to the F1 racing series and embarked heavily onresearching midship-engine rear-wheel drive format. By 1985, a new sports car wasdeveloped, inspired by an F1 machine and given the code name, NSX. The late AyrtonSenna, famed F1 driver, tested the NSX in Japan and his feedback encouraged the Hondaengineers to further enhance the car’s rigidity before it was introduced for the road.“We only have one future and it will bemade of our dreams, if we have thecourage to challenge convention.”In its first attempt at one of the most ambitious – and successful –pursuit of technological advancement, Honda’s development of amid-engine sports car sparked an onset of evolution that resultedin the most celebrated sports car it ever built - the NSX.Soichiro HondaThere is no denying that the NSX make heads turnon the road but apart from being just a stunningbeauty, the NSX is a symbol of craftsmanship.Through the 15 years in production, it has enjoyedtremendous accolades and remains, till today, thepinnacle of Honda’s sporting heritage. When the onset of the NSX’s early chaptersbegan in the 1980’s, Honda had aimed at creatinga new value with a sports car, one that demonstrates superiorperformance and could bridge its mass production models andF1 cars. “To create a sports car for a new era, we should balancehuman feelings and vehicle performance at higher levels.” This wasthe consensus of Honda’s development team, and it was to be theconcept for their new sports vehicle. The development was thusgiven a code name, NS-X, which represented “new”, “sportscar”and “unknown world”, X being the mathematical symbol for anunknown value.1989: The NSX prototype tested on the road1990 – 1991The NSX was introduced in Japan and the U.S. The car was such a hit that buyers hadto wait as long as three years to get their dream machine! To equip new NSX ownerswith sports driving skills, Honda’s NSX engineers organised the first owners’ meeting atSuzuka Circuit, Japan.1990: The 1st Generation NSX in Indy Yellow Pearl1992 – 1995Honda engineers took a giant step forward and introduced the NSX-R, tuned to performon racing circuits. The NSX also began participating in racing events like the Le Mans24-hour Grand Prix, Suzuka 1000km and Tokatsu 24-hour race, achieving class victoriesby 1995. That same year, Honda unveiled the open-top NSX-T.To signal its exit from the Super GT 2009 Series, the NSX’s bid farewell in a finaleparade at Twin Ring Motegi, Japan. The engineers’ ambition began in earnest and even more so withHonda’s famed return to Formula One in 1983, after a 15-yearabsence. Using technologies cultivated through years of contributionin motorsports, the NSX continued to evolve and succeeds inbeing one of the first sports cars that combines exhilarating drivingperformance with superior environmental performance. After years of embarking on the project with iron-clad fortitude,Honda finally introduced the NSX in 1990 as a mid-engine puresports car with an all-aluminium monocoque body, a world’s firstfor a production vehicle at that time. The achievement is quitesimply a manifestation of Soichiro Honda’s inspiring words, “Weonly have one future and it will be made of our dreams, if we havethe courage to challenge convention.”1992: The NSX-T in Midnight Pearl1997 – 2000The NSX Type S rolled out in 1997 with stiffer suspension settings and a lighter body.Meanwhile, the NSX made its exciting debut at the Japan GT Championship, clinchingits first victory in 1998 and first Championship win in 2000, a memorable honour in its10th anniversary. The NSX-GT has emerged victorious in various Japan GT Championships2001 – 2005Honda’s ongoing pursuit of the challenging spirit reached new heights when the NSX-Rwas reintroduced as a pure sports model to deliver even greater performance thanits predecessor while the NSX received further refinements, such as more advancedaerodynamics and fixed mount headlights. Even after production of the NSX halted in2005, Honda continued to foster its racing spirit in the Super GT Championship with theNSX-GT.The NSX-R was improved with advanced aerodynamics and fixed mount headlights10 | with dreamswith dreams | 11
