If you have ever worried about the rising 

price of petrol and its negative effect on 

your wallet, or if you’re worried about the 

environmental damage caused by 

burning fossil fuels, then you owe it to 

yourself to read this article. Because not 

only are hybrid vehicles far more gentle on 

the environment, they’re also a great way 

to save a lot of money in the long run. 

But just what exactly is a hybrid vehicle? 

Though it might seem like something 

straight out of science hybrid 

t e c h n o l o g y h a s b e e n u s e d i n t h e 

transportation industry for some time 

now. The concept behind it is really 

quite simple. Basically, any mode of 

transport that relies on energy supplied 

by two distinctly different sources is a 

hybrid vehicle. You’ve probably seen a 

few already, though you might not have 

known it. 

The most recognisable examples are 

interstate trains (which are quite often 

diesel-electric hybrids), mopeds (which 

rely on pedal power and a petrol engine) 

and electric bicycles (which can be 

pedalled or run by electric motor). And 

today, it’s that same basic principle 

being applied to cars. 

The most common type of hybrid 

passenger car available to consumers 

today is the petrol-electric, though 

other possible combinations (namely 

diesel-electric) are currently under 

development.

when necessary as a good example 

of just how a petrol-electric hybrid 

vehicle works. 

Though there are a few different 

methods of combining the petrol and 

electric power sources, the Civic Hybrid 

is what’s known as a parallel hybrid. 

In this very effective and versatile 

the car can be powered 

by petrol and electricity at the same 

electricity exclusively, depending on 

driving demands. 

As a petrol-electric hybrid vehicle 

in a parallel

Hybrid can be broken down into a basic 

list of components that create the 

power: petrol engine, fuel tank, electric 

motor/generator, battery pack and 

transmission assembly. 

The petrol engine in a hybrid can be 

smaller than in a normal car, because 

it’s working in conjunction with the 

electric motor, so weight is saved and 

performance can actually increase. The 

Civic Hybrid represents Honda’s fourthgeneration 

engine/motor combination, 

with the 1.3L i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine 

and 20-hp electric motor putting out an 

impressive 115 PS. 

And since a hybrid uses so little fuel 

compared to a normal car, the fuel tank 

can be smaller yet still allow you to 

cover the same distances you would 

in a non-hybrid model, all while taking 

up less space and saving even 

more weight. 

Of course, what really makes a 

hybrid unique is the integration of an 

electric motor in the car’s design. And 

the electric motor in a Honda hybrid 

i s a n o t h e r e x a m p l e o f h i g h l y 

developed automotive technology. 

The latest Civic Hybrid features an 

improved magnet design and special 

rectangular wiring with a larger surface 

area that creates better conductivity. 

An improved integration of motor and 

control units has resulted in more 

precise digital control, with a corresp 

o n d i n g 5 0 p e r c e n t i n c r e a s e i n 

horsepower and 14 per cent increase in 

maximum torque.

In low intensity stop-and-go city 

driving, the car is powered solely by the 

electric motor. On the highway, the 

electric motor turns off and the petrol 

engine takes over. And when passing 

another car or going uphill, the petrol 

engine and electric motor will combine 

forces to provide the necessary power. 

As a happy by-product, the electricity 

makes the petrol last longer than ever 

before. Since the electric energy comes 

from a rechargeable battery pack built 

into the car, there needs to be a way to 

replenish the energy. The electric motor 

has the answer to that, too. 

Because not only is the electric 

motor able to give power to the wheels, 

it is also a generator that takes power 

from the wheels when you’re braking or 

slowing down and then feeds that 

energy back to the battery pack as 

electricity to be stored for later use. 

The entire process is what we call 

Honda IMA, which stands for Integrated 

Motor Assist, and it’s clear that this 

new approach allows for a t 

reduction in complexity and weight, 

p r o v i d i n g h i g h p o w e r o u t p u t a n d 

l o w f u e l c o n s u m p t i o n i n a w i d e 

r a n g e o f s i t u a t i o n s f r o m c i t y t o 

highway driving.

Hybrid Technology: The Honda IMA System 

Relying mainly on engine power, Honda IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) adds power from the 

electric motor. Comprised of an ultra-thin DC brushless motor, nickel metal-hydride battery and 

Power Control Unit, the powerful yet lightweight electric motor activates whenever extra power is 

required – then acts as a generator during deceleration to 

recover spent electrical 

energy. An "automatic idle stop" system automatically turns off the petrol engine when the vehicle 

comes to a full stop, reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

For as long as he can remember, Yussof 

Madat, a 54-year old retired Malaysian 

Airlines operations officer, had always 

known that he would own a Honda some 

day. And there are two reasons for this: 

first, he wants to support his childhood 

friend/secondary schoolmate of 40 years, 

Francis Kong, the General Manager of the 

Premier Motor (Honda) dealership in 

Labuan; second, because of his love for 

the Honda name. “To me, the brand 

sounds impressive, reliable and longlasting,” 

Mr. Madat explained. 

In 2004, Mr. Madat’s wish to own a 

Honda came true when he purchased a 

brand new, second generation CR-V. 

“I had my eye on the CR-V since the 

launch of the first generation, but was 

unsuccessful in meeting loan requirements 

and so had to postpone my purchase. 

But I assured Francis that I would get 

a CR-V some day,” said Mr. Madat with 

a smile. 

“I love to travel. As an airline employee, 

I was entitled to a free air ticket every 

year, and only had to pay 10 per cent 

of the fare for subsequent air tickets. Even 

with such perks, I found it hard to save

The year of 2005 is one of significant 

change for Mr. Ismailia, a 39-year old 

primary school teacher of Bahasa 

Malaysia, Mathematics, and Science. In 

addition to embracing a complete change 

in lifestyle, participating and falling in love 

with virtually every outdoor activity, which 

he used to shy from, Mr. Ismailia also 

bought the car of his dreams during that 

year, a Honda Jazz. 

“A friend of mine had introduced the 

Honda Jazz to me, and I fell in love with it 

instantly. Unfortunately, like many, I had 

the impression that Honda was expensive, 

and was initially hesitant in purchasing 

it. I visited this Honda dealership 

(Jimisar Corporation Sdn Bhd) and was 

surprised that they approved my loan 

application for the purchase of the Jazz,” 

said Mr. Ismailia. 

He added, “I simply love my Honda 

Jazz! It’s smooth to drive, light and easy 

to handle, has good suspension, plus is 

very economical on fuel too. An eight or 

nine hour drive back to my home town, 

located about 700km away, requires me 

to refuel only once. I’ve yet to experience 

any problems with my Jazz.”

As for the service he receives at

praise, “Their service is very good. You’re 

treated like a friend here, rather than a 

customer – different from some of the 

other dealerships. Also, I never have 

to wait long for the servicing of my car, on 

average between two to three hours. A

friendly staff, who like me are also big 

fans of cars, soccer and mobile phones, 

help to ease the wait considerably. The

However, there is one thing that 

disappoints Mr. Ismailia. “Unlike the larger 

Malaysian cities like Kuala Lumpur, it’s

The year was 2001. The date, 18 May 

2001. And on that spring Friday in Tokyo, 

Honda Motor Co. Ltd. introduced the 

world to its latest i-series engine: the 

1.3L, 4-cylinder Honda i-DSI (intelligent

Countless hours of meticulous 

research and careful planning have 

resulted in an incredibly compact Honda 

i-DSI engine. It’s also very lightweight, 

thanks to reduced valve angles that 

create a smaller combustion chamber, a 

more compact air cleaner, a serpentine 

auxiliary drive system, a plastic intake 

manifold and an innovative stainlesssteel 

exhaust pipe. 

This lightweight, high-performance

mid rpm range, via a high-tech process 

of intensive combustion to achieve ultrahigh

course, since it’s so very the 

Honda i-DSI puts out remarkably clean 

emissions that are much more gentle to 

the environment. 

Perhaps quite surprisingly, the 

biggest secret behind this amazing little 

engine is deceptively simple: the Honda 

i-DSI is equipped with two sparkplugs in 

each of its newly designed, compact 

combustion chambers. 

To achieve the intense fuel combustion – 

consistent at any rpm — that is the 

hallmark of the Honda i-DSI engine, each 

cylinder’s sparkplugs in a different 

order, constantly adjusting to suit engine 

rpm and load. The resulting intelligent, 

dual-point sequential ignition control is 

what creates the improved burn and 

reduced emissions. 

Going into greater detail, each 

cylinder’s two sparkplugs are arranged 

diagonally. In this way, propagation 

in the combustion chambers is markedly 

accelerated. The air-fuel mixture’s rapid 

combustion produces a very high energy 

output with only a minimum amount of 

petrol required. 

Not only is engine knocking – an 

unavoidable, unwanted reality that’s 

b e e n p r e s e n t s i n c e t h e d a w n o f 

motorised travel – effectively brought 

under control, but intensive combustion 

at any rpm also allows a far higher 

compression ratio. 

According to Honda testing, the 

Honda 1.5L i-DSI engine achieves a 

maximum output of 88PS at 5500rpm 

and a maximum torque of 131N•m at 

2700rpm, compared to the 1.5L VTEC’s 

110PS at 5800rpm and 143N•m at

For the fifth year running, Honda Malaysia Racing 

Team (HMRT) has come out leading the pack at the 

Merdeka Millennium Endurance race. Find out what 

makes this season’s win so special. 

History repeats, and once again the 

Honda Malaysia Racing Team (HMRT) has 

dominated the Merdeka Millennium 

Endurance (MME) race by winning the Class 

A at the Sepang International Circuit. 

Victory is even sweeter as the team’s 

efforts and hard work in this year’s 

MME coincided with the country’s 50th 

Anniversary celebrations. And apart 

from securing class wins, HMRT finished 

second and third overall by beating 

some of the bigger and more powerful 

cars on the circuit. 

HMRT’s two Civic Type R race cars, 

one locally built at Honda’s Melaka 

assembly plant and another manufactured 

completely in Japan, again proved why 

Honda is such a powerful force in motor 

sports throughout the world. 

Car No. 27, driven by Eddie Lew, Hiroki 

Katoh and Shinya Hosokawa, crossed 

the finish line one lap ahead of Car No. 26, 

built locally by HMRT and driven by Rueben 

Wong, Aaron Lim and Fahrizal Hassan, 

making up the one-two victory in Class A. 

Perfectly planned pit stops and 

a strong team effort were the simple 

reasons behind the success of the two 

Honda cars. 

“My heartiest congratulations to the 

whole HMRT and all the drivers. All of them 

have done Honda proud. It has been a 

challenging 12 hours, but the whole team 

persevered, worked really hard and rose to 

the challenges. I am indeed very proud 

of them,” said HMRT Principal, Honda 

Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. Managing Director and 

Chief Executive Officer Atsushi Fujimoto. 

The team was very happy to be able 

to defend its Class A title for the fifth 

consecutive year, according to Fujimoto.

“It is the cohesive teamwork and 

team spirit of all the HMRT members that 

made this possible. Having said that, at 

Honda, it’s never just about the victory. 

It’s always about how far we rose to the 

challenge. It is also Honda’s DNA and 

Challenging Spirit in racing which 

continues to challenge us to compete at 

the highest level of motor sports, and 

this includes MME,” Fujimoto said. 

“Today, HMRT demonstrated Honda’s 

Challenging Spirit to the hilt.” 

Eddie Lew, one of Car No. 27’s 

drivers, was also elated at winning Class 

A for the fifth year in a row. 

“I am very happy to win with Hiroki 

Katoh as my partner. This year’s race has 

been challenging but I believe the most 

important factor in helping us win the race 

was HMRT’s Racing Spirit, which was 

very strong this year. Besides that, the 

race car was in excellent condition 

throughout the race,” Lew said. 

Lew also congratulated the Car 

No. 26 drivers for being very competitive 

throughout the race, perhaps even more 

so as the car was locally built at the 

Melaka plant. 

“I would like to thank Mugen engineers, 

Yokohama and, of course, Honda 

Malaysia for their continuous support. 

And also HMRT – the team that made 

this happen! I am happy to be given the 

opportunity to race the car and win again 

this year. I hope I can race for HMRT 

again next year,” Lew said. 

Car No. 27’s Japanese driver Hiroki 

Katoh said winning the Class A title for 

the fifth consecutive year was a personal 

victory for him. 

“I had two challenges for MME this 

year: the first being that I raced with 

the Civic Type R for the first time; the 

second challenge is of course to keep 

winning the Class A title. I am very happy 

that we did it! The teamwork and the 

diligence of the HMRT members was 

what made this possible. This is their 

victory,” Katoh said. 

At MME 2006, HMRT experienced a 

bittersweet victory when Car No. 27 took 

home the Class A title while Car No. 26 

met with an unforeseen accident that 

caused major damages to the car. But 

the HMRT team managed to repair the 

car, which then went on to finish the race 

and take eighth position in Class A. 

In order to ensure the race ran 

smoothly this year, and as part of the 

training and development of local 

talents, Honda Malaysia sent three 

HMRT members to Japan for threeweeks 

to learn from the MUGEN team 

during the building of Car No. 27. 

Irwan Ab. Hamid was one of the 

team members who underwent training 

in Japan. 

“I joined a team of people who are 

experts in building race cars. It was a 

dream come true for me. They taught me 

many new skills, and the true meaning 

of teamwork and team spirit. In the 

three weeks when we were there, we 

worked together to build a complete 

race car from just an empty frame. When 

we encountered a problem, they taught 

us to never give up and instead think of 

creative ways to solve it,” Irwan said.

The little car with the big heart may cause 

some confusion – it is known by two different 

names around the world – but there is 

nothing confusing about the popularity of 

the Honda Jazz. Worldwide sales of the 

stunning supermini reached two million units 

at the end of June 2007. And its worldwide 

popularity is matched by its popularity in 

Malaysia – more than 10,000 Jazz vehicles 

have left the showrooms here since its launch 

in 2003. 

In case you were wondering, the car is 

known as the Fit in Japan, North America, 

South America and China, while Jazz is the 

vehicle name used in Europe and Asia/ 

Oceania. As William Shakespeare put it; “a 

rose by any other name would smell as 

sweet,” and whether it is known as Fit or 

Jazz, the vehicle packs an incredible amount 

of innovation into its compact body. 

In developing the Jazz, Honda succeeded 

in meeting a number of performance 

goals; it boasts the world’s highest levels of 

safety and environmental friendliness while 

delivering superb handling, fuel economy, 

distinctive styling and driving pleasure. 

Honda has raised the bar on the kind of 

performance expected in a subcompact 

car, doing its utmost to answer all of its 

customers’ requirements in a single vehicle. 

So how did Honda achieve these goals? 

Some of the secrets lie in the engine bay. 

In Malaysia the vehicle is available with 

either the 1.5L VTEC engine, offering 

sporty performance, or the popular 1.5L 

i-DSI engine, which still offers spirited 

performance, in addition to unheralded 

frugality with fuel – the 1.5L i-DSI model 

tested in Thailand registered an amazing 

15.2km/L fuel-economy figure by TISI 

(the Thailand Industry Standard Institute) 

signaling Honda’s success in meeting its 

environmental friendliness target. 

The i-DSI signifies intelligent Dual & 

Sequential Ignition, meaning the 88 horsepower 

engine available here is equipped 

with two spark plugs in each compact 

combustion chamber. The sparks are 

activated in a different order depending 

upon engine rpm and load, resulting in 

intelligent, dual-point sequential ignition 

control to achieve intensive fuel combustion 

at any rpm. 

The two spark plugs are arranged 

diagonally to accelerate flame propagation 

in the combustion chamber, thus achieving 

rapid combustion of the air-fuel 

mixture and obtaining high output from 

a minimum amount of petrol. Furthermore, 

harmful exhaust emissions have been 

greatly reduced. 

For the powerful 110 horsepower VTECe 

q u i p p e d J a z z , H o n d a ’s e n g i n e e r s 

developed a light, compact engine equipped 

with a roller coaxial VTEC mechanism and 

aluminum rocker arms, that also utilises fuel 

economy technology from the i-DSI engine. 

With this new 1.5L VTEC engine Honda has 

achieved a superb balance of high power 

output, high fuel efficiency, and ultra-low 

emissions. Despite the extra power, the 1.5L 

VTEC Jazz still returned 15km/L according to 

TISI test figures. 

The fuel efficiency is helped further 

thanks to the automatic continuously-variable 

transmission with seven-speed mode. With 

this Steermatic system the driver can shift 

manually without removing his or her hands 

from the steering wheel. Alternately the driver 

may choose seven-speed automatic mode, 

or leave the clever belt-driven automatic 



transmission in continuously-variable mode, 

which means there are no steps or jerks 

when the transmission changes ratios – it is 

continuously variable after all! 

With this transmission the Jazz gives the 

driver the option of a normal or sporty drive, 

assisted by the virtual gear map ratio 

and simulated gear position indications 

on the dashboard. 

But there is much more to the Jazz than 

clever engines and transmissions. It rides 

on Honda’s global small platform in which 

the engineers located the petrol tank 

centrally on the platform – under the front 

seats, to be precise. This unique layout 

means the over-all size of the vehicle could 

be decreased while increasing interior 

space. The engineers also designed a more 

compact suspens-ion system – McPherson 

Strut at the front and torsion beam at the 

rear – allowing the floor to be lowered, 

creating an unpreced-ented amount of cabin 

space for such a small vehicle. 

And the engineers didn’t stop there – the 

interior space is further maximised with the 

functional Ultra Seat, an innovative 60/40 

split rear seat that allows the seatbacks to 

fold down or the seat bottoms to flip up, 

providing three distinct seating and cargo 

carrying configurations (Utility Mode, Long 

Mode and Tall Mode) in addition to the 

standard five-passenger mode. 

One of Honda’s prime objectives in 

designing the Jazz was best-in-class levels 

of safety, and a carefully devised body 

structure based on extensive computer 

analysis and a real-life crash-testing 

programme has achieved that. 

In June 2004 the Jazz was the first in 

the Supermini class to achieve a three-star 

rating for pedestrian safety in Phase 14 

of the Euro NCAP crash test programme. 

In addition, the Jazz had the best overall 

performance for combined safety in the 

class with four-star occupant protection, 

three-star pedestrian protection and threestar 

child seat rating. 

Honda’s G-Force technology allows the front 

frame to absorb more impact energy 

because it is longer, stiffer and straighter. 

The arched-type front side frame, as well as 

absorbing a large amount of impact energy 

in its own right, then channels energy back 

below the cabin area into the floor frame 

thereby minimising cabin intrusion. 

In addition, the cross members of the 

adjoining main frame surround the fuel tank 

providing a protective perimeter frame. This 

arrangement assures high body rigidity, and 

improved crashworthiness in a rational and 

simple design. 

The excellent impact safety characteristics 

of the Jazz are complemented by 

driver and front passenger airbags, plus 

there are ISOFIX child seat anchors provided 

on the left and right rear. 

With this sort of safety, versatility, 

practicality and environmental friendliness 

it is little surprise the Jazz has proved so 

popular, in fact, in its first full year on sale in 

Japan it was the top-selling vehicle according 

to the Japan Automobile Dealers’ 

Association. This was the first time that a 

Honda model reached the No.1 spot in 

yearly cumulative sales in that market. 

Of course no vehicle will prove so 

spectacularly popular unless it is fun to 

drive, and, thanks to the clever platform the 

Jazz is up there with the best, garnering 

fans around the world. The respected UK 

magazine Auto Express was suitably 

impressed: “the quantum leap in chassis 

rigidity and suspension settings takes 

the Jazz into a league of its own in the 

handling department…the end result is 

that you can throw the Honda into corners at 

speeds way above other superminis. Enter 

a bend at 50mph (80km/h), choose your line 

and the car remains perfectly balanced, 

with only the slightest hint of understeer.”

The Super GT Bash! 

Honda Malaysia introduced the 2007 line-up of NSX-GT 

racing teams to the media at a party in Kuala Lumpur, in 

conjunction with the 2007 Autobacs Super GT International 

Series at Sepang on 21 June. 

The star-studded pre-race bash gave guests the chance 

to get up close and personal with the drivers of teams ARTA, 

Dome, Epson Nakajima, Kunimitsu and Rolling Stone, as 

everyone mixed and mingled while they all enjoyed the party’s 

many interactive games and fun-filled activities. 

One highlight was the special performance by the original 

GT Queens from Japan. Regarded as an essential component 

to the Super GT Series, the GT Queens are hugely popular in 

Japan where they are considered celebrities. Throughout the 

festivities, the Honda NSX-GT Teams’ focus on winning the 

GT championship was clearly evident.

Eco-Run for the Money 

A Honda City with i-DSI engine travelled 

an amazing 662.5 kilometres on just 25.29

Efficiency Automobile Test that was held as part of 

Honda’s two-day Eco-Run event on 19-20 May. 

A total of sixteen participants in four vehicles took part 

in F.E.A.T., which required teams to drive a fully-loaded City 

i-DSI at an average speed of 80km/h from Petaling Jaya to 

Cameron Highlands to Bukit Merah and then back to 

Petaling Jaya again, using as little petrol as possible. 

The winning team – Jimmy Ng, Eric Goh, Sim Chee Kun 

and Edwin Ng – managed an astounding fuel consumption 

of 26.2km per litre, with the event monitored by officials 

from the Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM). After 

the road trip, the winners drove home with RM4000 in 

prizes that included Honda watches and RM1000 petrol 

vouchers, plus Honda Racing umbrellas and caps. 

The Eco-Run included other activities like the Ultra 

Seat Folding challenge,

Honda Safety Driving Course 

Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. conducted its second Safety Driving 

Course at the Asia Pacific Auction Centre on 14 and 15 July 

2007, as a continuous commitment to enrich the lives and meet 

the needs of customers while raising awareness of the 

importance of safety driving. 

A total of 60 drivers attended, with a ratio of two participants 

to one instructor covering a syllabus that included Traffic 

Accidents & Preventions, Driving Posture for Optimal Vehicle 

Control, Danger Reaction & Avoidance and Cornering, as well as 

new driving techniques and theories. 

“Until more people address the issues and learn to make the 

initiatives to safer driving, we will continue our efforts to reinforce
