“He’s a bit colour blind,” says Grace Ong, PublicRelations Manager, about her hubby Francis Tan. “He painted a paneon our wooden gate a completely different shade of brown from whatwe wanted.”As always, Business Director Francis, 40, has the last word. “She’sjust exaggerating. It wasn’t so bad really, except that I had accidentallybought a teh tarik coloured paint instead of a ‘kopi’ shade.”“See? That’s why he needs to have me tag along everytime we buysomething,” counters Grace.Indeed, KL-ites Francis and Grace, who have been married for almostten years, enjoy ‘taking the mickey’ out of each other throughout theinterview, as With DREAMS talks to them about their life with theirHonda cars. Francis drives a CR-V while Grace enjoys getting behindthe wheel of her Civic.“I’m a really practical person and I enjoy the great outdoors,” saysFrancis, who goes on outstation fishing trips with his family and a fewfriends at least once every two or three months. He tells us that hisCR-V is the perfect partner for his kind of lifestyle, which also includesmountain biking and nature walks. “I love its road handling, especiallywhen I take the smaller country roads,” he says, adding that amongothers, he especially enjoys playing Morissey, Depeche Mode and TheKillers over his car stereo to which he connects his iPod.“I prefer R&B and especially those 80’s tunes. It picks me up especiallywhen I have to put up with the daily traffic. It takes me about an hour toget home to Bandar Sri Damansara from my office in the city centre inthe evenings, but the Civic makes it bearable. And I really love its look, especially from the front,” says Grace. They are joined at the photo shoot by young Ryan, their 18-monthold toddler who isn’t taking to the bright lights and strange facesaround him very well. But soon, after much cajoling and being givenhis favourite toy car and duck by the camera crew, Ryan manages tocalm down and have his photo taken.“Our priorities went topsy-turvy after Ryan came along, but once wegot used to it, it’s been a real joy,” says Grace. Most days she pickshim up from his Aunty Jean’s house in her Civic which is fitted with achild seat.“He’s just beginning to speak and I kid you not thatone of his favourite words is car,” she adds. The Tans spend most weekends at home, with Francis laying claimto being the master chef in the family. “I do a mean baked fish,” heannounces. “Yes, yes. The one where it came out steamed you mean,”laughs Grace. “But I must say I do enjoy his Pandan Leaf Chicken andCantonese noodles.” Francis beams as Grace goes on to explain thather husband is so proud of his kitchen exploits that he even takesphotos of his dishes. “So it’ll be easier to place my order next timewhen it’s her turn in the kitchen,” quips Francis.Though seemingly opposing characters, they do share a lot incommon. “We both love to travel, especially overseas. In fact, we’replanning a trip to England with Ryan at the end of the year,” saysGrace. They both also enjoy a trip to the bowling lanes every nowand then. “Of course I always win easily,” says Francis. Another thingthey have in common is their love for Honda vehicles. “I used to owna City previously while Francis had an Accord. I guess it comes downto trust and familiarity. And we feel that way toward Honda cars,”explains Grace.“Of course, Honda’s advanced technology like the i-VTEC engine iscomparable with the best in the world but to us it’s things like safetyfeatures that are more important now with Ryan on-board,” saysFrancis. “Totally agreed,” says Grace. “Ah for once! See, there’s hopefor her yet,” says Francis as he playfully nudges his wife and theyproceed to strike a pose for the next photo.Francis, Grace & baby ryan’s wardrobe is courtesy of GaP, styled by GraceKue. make-up and hair by shu Uemura and L’Oréal Professionnel, as styled byKenji Kim and su Zen (from miko hair studio & academy) respectively. theirstylish makeover is made possible by honda malaysia.Log on to www.honda.com.my/makeover today andstand a chance to share your own unique story as a Honda owner. You will also receive a professional makeover and photo shoot!with dreams | 05

Honda AND YOU: Dealer’s StoryHere at Global Amity’s work station, social networking is becoming a daily affair.GLOBAL AMITYREACHES OUT TOCUSTOMERS VIASOCIAL MEDIAIt takes a lot of courage to embrace the new at a time of financialuncertainties. Where businesses are holding back the ringgit and makingprudent savings while fighting the fiscal storm in 2009, there is one whohad found power in change and expansion.Instead of cutting costs, Global Amity Sdn Bhd, a Honda authorised 3Scentre, went against the tide – they expanded their service centre by twoadditional bays, facelifted the service lounge, added a new WiFi-enabledcustomers’ lounge upstairs and invested in a half-acre parking, in additionto participating and initiating a string of activities for employees andcustomers. It seems to have paid off handsomely as Global Amity ushersin 2010 with composed optimism. At the encouragement of Azri Aziz, the Director of Operations, theassociates at Global Amity have also become a lot more tech-savvy as aresult of being exposed to social media networks. “We initiated a Facebookpage for the dealership in 2008 with the objective of increasing IT literacyamong our staff while exposing them in a social media platform wherethe interactivity is a lot more vibrant. We later saw the opportunity for06 | with dreams

customer engagement where we can get personal with our customerson Facebook and work along with them to resolve their concerns,”he explains. The Global Amity Facebook group may have reached a thousandfans and is looking really popular now, but creating the account wasnot without conquering much apprehension and collective anxietyamong the staff. “I had trouble lobbying the need for us to venture intosocial media. Many were uneasy and I get remarks like, ‘It’s new andnobody in Malaysia uses these networks.’ Some were worried that wewon’t be capable of monitoring and maintaining the page. But soonenough, they started seeing the positive response from the customerswhich gave them confidence in interacting within the page. The key isconsistency. We don’t stop addressing our customers’ concerns andthat has helped us tremendously,” Azri shares. We are unrelenting inour core competencies, that is to sell and servicecars and take care of ourcustomersSocial media does not distract fromwhat matters at the dealership -providing good customer service. With the success of that, Azridecided to reach out to customersand prospects through Twitter in2009. The objective is very muchcustomer service driven, withthe aim to seal Global Amity’sreputation both online and offline.“In my opinion, in fact, socialmedia is just a fancy evolution offorums and newsgroups, whichhave been around since theemergence of the Internet. Whatwe hope to do here is nothingnew. Our approach is to integrateour social media objectives withour customer service strategy. It needs to be adapted at acompany-wide level. I am notrunning a one-man show. The team is slowly gaining the momentumto monitor these so-called social media channels. Ultimately, we hopethat by having different communication platforms, we are able to listento our customers’ needs better. At the rate the web is evolving, somecustomers expect prompt responses. We try to provide them that,”elaborates Azri as he talks animatedly about his customers.Global Amity was named Dealer of the Year in 2006. With the wincame an obvious boost in sales and inevitably, the bar was raised. They found themselves facing a new challenge, which was to balancequality of service with intensified volume in sales.Gradual changes in human resourcefurther pushed the management toinitiate new strategies to heightenemployees’ motivation. Sincethe beginning of 2008, theyhave continuously strived toinject fresh thinking to improvethe way they work and ithas effectively shifted thementality of its employeesto embrace a different levelof comfort, such as beingmore immersed in thedigital age.Azri admits that it isnot easy to monitor thecomments online, especiallywith their own channels onFacebook and Twitter. “Youare basically open for 24Azri Aziz is constantly wired on hisBlackBerry to engage with his employeesand customers.hours. What I do is spend some time in the morning and evening dailyto respond to customers’ feedback and queries. They appreciate andwelcome that, and as long as you love what you are doing, who can tellyou what a job is anymore?”“We want to offer a 5-star Global Amity experience. To achieve that,we just need to be helpful. That, to me, is true customer service. At theend of the day, it is not about being a social media evangelist. We areunrelenting in our core competencies, that is to sell and service carsand take care of our customers,” Azri humbly shares as he taps awayon his faithful BlackBerry to respond to a customer query.DEALER’S INFORMATIONGlobal Amity Sdn Bhd is a 3S centre located at Lot 2,3,4,5 GroundFloor, Jalan SR 1/9, Sek 9, Serdang Raya, 43300 Seri Kembangan,Selangor. But after powering up the TouringModulo Insight at the race, it is not onlya great test of fuel efficiency but I wassurprised to find that the carspeeds round corners verywell. Owning an electricor hybrid vehicle may bea trend but it’s great tohave a customisationbrand like Modulomaking it moreexciting to driveone,” he says.As the ownershipof hybrid vehiclessteadily increases,it is no longer just aboutdemonstrating one’s commitment inprotecting the environment. There isa greater opportunity now to enhancethe non-conforming spirit of the individualwith varying degrees of sporty modification. And that is the new value that the Moduloconcept appears to bring, one that Hondawill continue to innovate as it moves towardseco performance technology.Moving away from the hybrids, a key exhibit that got fans ofHonda motorsports pumped was the NSX Mugen RR, a raceinspiredversion of the NSX modified by Honda’s in-house tuner,Mugen. RACING DNADREAMSCHASINGSoichiro Honda with the F1 prototype car which is coveredwith a steel space frame and was tested in Arakawa, Japan,in February 1964.Honda’s journey into motorsportsYou’d never think that a 17-year old mechanic’s daydreams ofbuilding the ultimate racing machine would someday come true. Butnever say never. As Soichiro Honda rode alongside famous race cardriver Shin’ichi Sakakibara in 1924, with whom he would win thatyear’s Japan Automobile Competition, little did he realize that hisname would one day come to be revered in the world of motorsportsfrom Suzuka to Monte Carlo and from Silverstone to Sepang. Asevery sports enthusiast knows, determination is the single mostimportant trait and young Soichiro had bucket loads.Indeed, twelve years later in 1936, driving a supercharged, Fordbasedmachine he had built himself, he managed to unceremoniouslyturtle the vehicle and get tossed out. But though the broken bonesand facial lacerations he suffered would sadly put an end to his daysas a racer, it did reiterate his ‘winning isn’t everything’ belief and itwould do little to keep the auto repair shop owner away from hislove of racing. He would soon get behind the technological side ofthe wheel instead in his quest to be the fastest in the world. “Racingimproves the breed,” he opined.Ever the visionary, one of Soichiro Honda’s first ventures after WWIIwas the formation of the Honda Technical Research Institute (theforerunner of Honda Motor Company). Using cheap, recycled, 50ccwar-surplus generator engines designed to power military radio sets,Soichiro Honda developed them into small half-a-horsepower bicycleengines, a precursor to the motorcycle engine. It was impossible tokeep this man down.Indeed, racing has always been at the core of Honda’s DNA. In1955, Honda motorcycles emerged victorious at the inaugural All-Japan Endurance Motorcycle Road Race, running over unpavedroutes in the forests of Mt. Asama. Soon after, Soichiro himself wenton a fact finding tour to the famous Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT)races held in England, where he returned truly inspired with ‘the tencommandments’ of how to take racing to the next level, a feat thathis motorcycles would achieve in the years to come.10 | with dreams

But to Soichiro Honda of course, that wasn’t quite enough. “Sincechildhood,” he once said, “my dream was to become a champion inthe world of automobile racing with a machine I had made myself.”And so the pursuit of producing a sports car began late in 1962with Honda’s S-360, S-500 and S-600 series. It wasn’t long after,in 1964, that Honda produced its first F1 car, the RA271, and wastaking part in Grand Prix races throughout the globe between 1964and 1968. And after a 15 year hiatus, Honda returned to the F1circuit at the British Grand Prix in 1983 teaming up with McLaren.Following this, Honda-powered F1 cars began to regularly takethe honours at Grand Prix races, an example being winning anamazing fifteen out of sixteen races in 1988! In fact, by the end ofthe 1992 season, Honda-powered cars had won an amazing 71Grand Prix races.Honda’s involvement in motorsports dates back as far as 1924 whenSoichiro Honda and Shin’ichi Sakakibara won the 5th Japan AutomobileCompetition.During this period, Honda supplied its engines to six constructorchampions, as well as five driver championships. Among its driverswere three-time World F1 champion, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost andNelson Piquet. In 2000, Honda provided engines for the BritishAmerican Racing (BAR) team, which was re-established as HondaRacing F1 Team in 2005.“My dream was to become a championin the world of automobile racing witha machine I had made myself.”The first race-ready F1 car by Honda entered the German Grand Prix inAugust 1964. The ivory white body was painted with a red circle on the frontnose to symbolise the Japanese flag.Besides F1, Honda has also actively been involved in the Indy CarChampionships, British Touring Car and Super GT races amongother car races over the years, while in Malaysia, the Honda MalaysiaRacing Team (HMRT) build up their own race-tuned Civic Type R forthe annual 12-hour Merdeka Millennium Endurance race.Since 2003, HMRT have participated in the endurance race withsupervision from the Mugen team. The team has managed to showtheir racing DNA and gained gradual independence since, and by2008, Honda Malaysia introduced a 100% local team who built upthe Civic Type R themselves for the race. The Honda NSX was used in the Super GT series to compete in the GT500class up till 2009. The NSX is modified season to season to meet raceregulations.HMRT’s objective has always been a platform to allow local talentsto thrive in motorsports, hence the team comprises of HondaMalaysia associates who apply their experiences and challengingspirit to their daily jobs at Honda. But then again, you wouldn’t be surprised. Certainly not whenyou’re backed by Soichiro Honda’s driving philosophy. As the manonce famously said, “If Honda does not race, there is no Honda”.Consider yourself told.Honda Malaysia shows their racing spirit by participating in the annualMerdeka Millennium Endurance race with the locally-built Honda CivicType R.with dreams | 11
