Pre-Registration & On-Site Registration:
Fees for all categories are payable to the Toronto Academy of
Dentistry.
Please use one form per office, registering attendees under applicable
category. (Only if necessary, please photocopy to add additional
registrants per office).
The registration fee includes admission to the Clinics, Exhibits,
Lunch AND Tribute Show.

The office will accept NO REGISTRATIONS after Friday,
November 6th, 2009. The office will be closed on Thursday,
November 12, 2009 (the day before Winter Clinic) and Friday,
November 13, 2009.
Association Membership:
ODA Members, regardless of their membership status, must have
their full ODA dues paid prior to pre-registering or registering onsite.
If current membership dues are not showing paid, nonmember
fees will apply.
ODHA, ODAA and RDT Membership fees must be paid to their
associations prior to pre-registering. Please make sure the name
(maiden or married surname) that appears on the registration
form is the same that is listed with your association.

Clear Essentials 1 Presented by
Dr Tony Gadbois
This one day course is designed specifically for the general practitioner
and team members that wish to incorporate the Invisalign®
system into their practice. This case based training provides participants
with the clinical and operational confidence to successfully
treat a range of highly predictable cases.
Clear Essentials 2 Presented by
Dr Carlyn Phucas
A lecture and workshop designed for GPs who currently offer
Invisalign in their practice. Advanced topics and techniques using
Invisalign are discussed to help doctors effectively select and treat
more complex malocclusions. We recommend that participants
have experience submitting and finishing Invisalign cases prior to
attending Invisalign: Clear Essentials II. Attendees must be
Invisalign Certified.
Doctors are encouraged to bring cases to Invisalign: Clear
Essentials II – the orthodontic instructor will select some cases to
discuss during part of the course and be available for Q&A after
the course.
Cancellation and Refunds:
You will be issued a full refund, less a $25.00 administration fee
until October 20, 2009. Between October 21 and October 27, 2009,
a 50% refund. There will be no refunds after October 27, 2009.
Badge Pick-up:
Badges will be mailed to attendees who register on or before
October 10, 2009 . If you do not pre-register, you may pick up your
badge on the day of Winter Clinic. Your badge must be worn at all
times. If lost or you do not have it on the day of Winter Clinic, a
replacement badge will be issued on-site ONLY, with valid photo
I.D. for a fee of $50.00. There will be no exceptions.
Exhibit Hours, Clinics and Lunch:
Accreditation Desks are on the Exhibit Floor and open from 2:00
p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Exhibits are open from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. All
exhibits are located in Halls D &E on the exhibit floor of the SOUTH
Building of the Convention Centre. SUPPORT YOUR EXHIBITORS!!
Be sure to attend one of over 20 comprehensive
lectures of interest to every member of the dental team!
“Power Hour” sessions are informative and engaging one-hour
sessions covering several aspects of dentistry. Power Hours allow
you to get the most out of your day by enabling you to attend

What’s Happening in Toronto During Winter Clinic
Hockey Hall of Fame / PATH
The Hockey Hall of Fame was founded in 1943 to establish a
memorial to those who have developed Canada's great winter
sport -- ice hockey. Incorporated in 1983, Hockey Hall of Fame and
Museum ("HHFM") exists in order to collect, preserve, research and
exhibit the history of the game of ice hockey, and in particular,
those who have made outstanding contributions and
achievements in the development of the game.
The Hockey Hall of Fame is connected to downtown Toronto's
"PATH" system. This is an underground network of buildings,
stores, restaurants, and hotels that are connected by pathways. So,
for example, if your family is staying at a hotel connected to the
PATH system during the coldest day of the year in Toronto, you
could leave all your winter clothing in the hotel and PATH your way
to the Hockey Hall of Fame in perfect comfort.
Queens Quay Terminal

Welcome to the 72nd Annual Winter Clinic
On behalf of the Toronto Academy of Dentistry, we welcome you to the 72nd Annual Winter Clinic on November
13, 2009 at the Metro Toronto Convention Center – south building.
The Winter Clinic is the largest one-day comprehensive meeting in North America. You and your staff will have
the opportunity to meet and partake in a world-class clinical programme with speakers and exhibitors from across
the dental industry.
Some of the highlights of this year’s Winter Clinic include:
● A presentation of the Canadian Armed Forces, “Afghanistan as seen through the eyes of an Oral
Maxillofacial Surgeon
● A programme sponsored by CDSPI entitled “Who is Minding Your Money”; which is particularly relevant in
these troubled economic times.
● The University of Toronto Update in Dentistry Series
● A panel of Oral Health Journal Editors.
With these, and many more programmes and workshops developed exclusively for the Winter Clinic, plan to get
the most out of your day by bringing your whole team with you to attend a variety of sessions that can later be
discussed and shared among your group.
Be sure to also spend time in the exhibit hall and take advantage of the specials offered exclusively at the Winter
Clinic. Bring a list and make your year end purchases from exhibitors who are keen to make a deal.

GREETINGS FROM THE DENTAL INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF CANADA (DIAC)

The past year for DIAC has been a VERY exciting one. We have gone through a Strategic Planning process
and refocused our priorities on areas we believe will bring mutual benefit for our members and the
Dental profession at large.
Our new vision focuses around four main areas:
1. Leadership involvement
2. Influencing the appropriate people and organizations to move initiatives forward, which we believe
will bring a benefit to the entire industry
3. Technology management through a time of rapid progress
4. Education for our members and their staff
These four key areas will be the drivers of the direction DIAC will
be going in the coming months and years.
As we head towards the end of 2009, we look back on a year that
created a lot of challenges for many people and businesses. At
the same time, we see it as a year that also provided many opportunities.
We trust that your practices and patients fared well
through this challenging time.
As you hold your Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s Winter Clinic

Winter Clinic provides those of us working in dentistry to come together to learn and grow as professionals.
2009 marks the 75th Anniversary of ODAA and one of our key goals is to ensure that our members
have access to good continuing education courses. The Toronto Academy of Dentistry is to be commended

Invisalign® is an esthetic orthodontic technique that corrects malocclusion using a series of custom-made, nearly invisible, removable
aligners. University-based and private clinical studies have proven its effectiveness, attracting dentists nationwide to integrate the
Invisalign® method into their specialty and family practices. Invisalign® Clear Essentials is the educational opportunity that allows them
to achieve this goal successfully.
Dental schools throughout the US and Canada have successfully integrated Invisalign® into their curricula, with the technique currently
taught in 38 Orthodontic programs and 11 pre-doctoral programs. Many professional organizations and societies also offer their
members the Invisalign® Clear Essentials I course. In 2008, 27 national and state organizations, as well as The Dawson Center and The
Scottsdale Center, offered Invisalign® Clear Essentials as an educational opportunity to their members. These courses are presented by
faculty on Align Technology’s Speaker’s Bureau, which includes clinical experts in the method and renowned lecturers in the dental community.

About the Speaker
Following receiving a Masters of Cell and Molecular Biology from the
University of Toronto in 2001 , Mehmet completed his DDS at the
University of Western Ontario. He is the recipient of numerous scholarship
awards and the Canadian Forces Leadership Division Top
Athlete Award, awarded to the athlete with highest ranking in the CF
express fitness test. He was the 2009 winner of the Atacama Crossing
Race (by a margin of over 50 minutes), ranked by TIME magazine as
one of the 10 most grueling races of the world in which over 20
nations and 85 competitors took part. Just prior to Winter Clinic,
Mehmet will be competing in the 250 km Sahara Race. In addition to
his duties with the Canadian Forces, Mehmet is a motivational speaker
and a trail running clinic instructor.

Afghanistan, as Seen Through the Eyes of an
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
About the Speaker
Dr. Trache graduated from the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine
and Dentistry in 1993. She joined the Canadian Forces in 1990, and upon
graduation she was posted to CFB Edmonton where she provided dental
services to members of the Canadian Forces. In 1998, she left the military
for civilian private practice, only to return 2 years later. Dr. Trache was posted
to 19 Wing Comox, BC prior to being selected for training as an Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgeon. She completed her post-graduate residency training
at University of Texas, Houston from 2004 to 2008. In the summer of
2008, Dr. Trache was posted to CFB Halifax where she is currently the
Atlantic Region Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.
Dr. Trache is a regular force member and has served in the Canadian
Forces for 17 years. She is the first female Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
in the Canadian Forces. She has recently completed a 3-month tour as the
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon of the Role 3 Multi-National Medical Unit
at Kandahar Air Field, from April to July 2009.
About the Program
This presentation brings you as close to the current conflict in Afghanistan as
possible without placing you in harm’s way. By attending this presentation
one can expect to gain insight and current knowledge regarding the war
within Afghanistan. The Afghanistan culture and the military mission will be
highlighted. The medical and dental facilities, types of injuries and maxillofacial
trauma associated with this conflict will be reviewed. Several concepts
regarding face, head and neck trauma will be outlined through actual case
presentations. Please be aware that this presentation contains graphic
images of battle injuries, combat operations and invasive surgical procedures
that some people may find disturbing.

About the Speaker
Since 1995, Dr. Ernest Lam has been an Associate Professor in the
Discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in the Faculty of Dentistry
at the University of Toronto and presently serves as Chair of the
Department. Dr. Lam completed the combined DMD/MSc program at
the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. After 2 years in general
dentistry, Dr. Lam undertook specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial
Radiology at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry, and completed
a PhD in the Radiation Biology Graduate Program at that University’s
College of Medicine. Dr. Lam is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists
in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and a Diplomate of the American
Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. In addition to his academic
responsibilities, Dr. Lam maintains part-time private practices in oral and
maxillofacial radiology in Toronto and Edmonton
About the Program
With the recent explosion of new technologies in oral and maxillofacial
radiology, it may at times be difficult for the clinician to decide how best
to investigate jaw abnormalities that arise in their patients. Using a casebased
format, this session will survey projection intra- and extra-oral
radiography, spiral and cone beam computed tomography, magnetic
resonance imaging and nuclear medicine, and illustrate how one or
more of these may be used selectively in the diagnosis of lesions that
arise in the jaws.

Dr. Sara Solomon received her BSc in Physical Therapy and her DMD from

in private practice in Toronto, Ontario. Dr. Solomon is also a certified
personal trainer and a SPINNING® instructor at Totum Life Science in
downtown Toronto. She lectures to dental professionals on the
prevention and treatment of work-related musculoskeletal injuries.

The delivery of dental care is extremely demanding on the body. In fact,
more than half of all practicing dental professionals will experience workrelated
pain. This evidence-based lecture focuses on the prevention and
treatment of dentistry-related musculoskeletal injuries of the lower back,
neck, shoulder, wrist and hand. This presentation covers the theoretical
aspects of musculoskeletal injuries, with emphasis on prevention via
proper posture and fitness as well as the prevention of chronic pain via
implementation of dento-ergonomics. Attendees will learn correct selection
and positioning of operator, patient, and assistant chairs. Guidelines
on operatory layout, overhead light positioning, delivery-system designs,
ergonomic instruments and surgical telescopes will be discussed indepth.
Participants will leave this session with tips and tricks that will
have an immediate positive impact on the way they practice dentistry.

About the Speaker
Dr. Peters received his degree in dentistry (Dr. med dent) from the
University of Kiel, Germany, in 1990. After spending two years in the
Department of Neurophysiology at the University of Kiel, he served as an
assistant professor of prosthodontics at the University of Heidelberg,
Germany, from 1993 to 1996. He received postgraduate endodontic training
as a PhD (Dr. habil.) at Zurich University Dental School from 1997 to
2001. He was an associate professor and head of the faculty practice in
restorative dentistry at the University of Zurich from 1996 to 2001, spending
his time teaching, giving CE courses and participating in the faculty
practice. Dr. Peters attended UC San Francisco from 2001 to 2003 and
received an MS certificate in Oral Biology. He also received a certificate in
endodontics from UCSF in 2006 and the dental license in California in
2007. He is currently Professor and Director of Endodontic Research in the
Endodontic Department of the Arthur A Dugoni School of Dentistry at
the University of the Pacific, San Francisco and maintains a private practice
in San Francisco. Dr. Peters has published more than 100 papers,
abstracts and book chapters and has lectured both nationally and internationally;
he serves on the review panel and editorial boards of most
endodontic journals.
About the program
Nickel-titanium instruments for rotary root canal preparation have been
around for more than 15 years. They are felt to give general practitioners
the tools to superior endodontic outcomes. Obviously, the significant
market volume in terms of US-$$ generates ongoing product cycles that
may and may not result in clinical advancement or better outcomes. This
lecture aims at giving an update on recent developments in Nickel-titanium
metallurgy and manufacturing, discussing marketing claims in the
light of well-founded facts. Over the last year or two, new technologies
such as electropolishing, new alloys (M-wire) and manufacturing technologies
(“twisting a file”) have been highlighted and it has been claimed
that those techniques will reduce file fatigue and hence instrument fractures.
These developments are fairly recent and not much scientific evidence
is available for any of those assertions. However, it is important to
keep abreast of current technologies as they emerge; this presentation
will not only explain the detailed nature of the terms but also make and
attempt to investigate manufacturers’ claims.
About the Speaker
David Cravit has over 30 years’ experience in advertising, marketing and
consulting in both Canada and the USA. He was a partner in Saffer Cravit &
Freedman Advertising, which he helped take from start-up to over $150 million
in annual billings. The agency was recognized as the leading retail specialist
agency in North America. After selling his interest in the business,
Cravit worked as an independent consultant and also a consultant to other
advertising agencies in Canada and the USA, before joining ZoomerMedia
in November, 2005 for which he holds the position of Vice President. Over
the years, Cravit has participated at the most senior levels in the creation and
placement of over $5 billion worth of media advertising. He has been a frequent
speaker at corporate and industry events, guest on numerous radio
and TV shows, and contributor to professional journals. His book, “The New
Old,” (October, 2008, ECW Press) details how Zoomers (led by the Baby
Boomers) are completely reinventing the process of aging – and the implications
for companies, government, and society as a whole.

Boomer generation refusing to age in the traditional way, and offer a predictive

About the Speaker
Dr. Randi Zlotnik Shaul is a bioethicist at The Hospital for Sick Children in
Toronto. In that role she provides ethics consultation services and policy
support to individuals and committees within the hospital, teaches
health care professionals and bioethics students, and conducts bioethics
research. Randi is an assistant professor in the Department of Paediatrics
at the University of Toronto, has an appointment in the Department of
Surgery and is a member of the University of Toronto’s Joint Centre for
Bioethics. Randi has a degree in political science from McGill University, a
law degree from Osgoode Hall, and both a Master of Law degree and a
Ph.D. in bioethics from the University of Toronto. Before graduate school,
Randi practiced law at the Ontario Ministry of Health. She has published
in the areas of health law, priority setting, accountability and research
ethics. Randi has presented at conferences both nationally and internationally.
She has been an active member of The Hospital for Sick
Children's Research Ethics Board for almost 9 years. Randi’s current
research interests include the interface of law and ethics in clinical and
research based accountability and the introduction of innovative therapies
in health care institutions. She is currently a PI on a CIHR funded
grant looking at issues of dual accountability for clinician-researchers.

About the Speaker
Dr. Klaiman graduated from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of
Dentistry in 1985 and received his Certificate of Advance Graduate
Studies in Prosthodontics from the Goldman School of Graduate
Dentistry, Boston University. Dr. Klaiman has a part-time teaching
appointment at the University of Toronto where he serves as a clinical
instructor for the Department of Prosthodontics. He has also held executive
positions for the Ontario Association of Dental Specialists, Ontario
Study Club of Osseointegration, Toronto Dental Seminars, and The
Association of Prosthodontics of Ontario. Dr. Klaiman maintains a full
time specialty practice in fixed and removeable prosthodontics in
Toronto.

About the Speaker
Dr. Ellen is a professor at both the University of Toronto Faculty of
Dentistry and Faculty of Medicine. He has published extensively and
has received numerous awards for his work. He teaches at both the
graduate and undergraduate level and is currently involved in several
research studies as well as serving on the editorial board of the
Journal of Periodontology
Dr. John O'Keefe is the Editor in Chief of the Journal the Canadian Dental
Association and has held this position since 1997. During this time he has
also conducted a clinical practice on a part-time basis, been Chairman of
the FDI Communications & Member Support Committee, and been
President of the American Association of Dental Editors.
Mr. Fefergrad is Registrar, Chief Executive Officer and in-house legal counsel
for the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario. He has the distinction
of being the first lawyer in the history of the Law Society of Upper
Canada to achieve a double specialty in civil litigation and in health law,
and the first lawyer to achieve a specialty in the practice of health law. Mr.
Fefergrad is also an educator, author and teacher. He is an Adjunct
Professor at the University of Western Ontario, Schulich School of
Medicine and Dentistry, and Assistant Professor at the University of
Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry. Mr. Fefergrad is one of the founding directors
of the Canadian Regulatory Authorities Federation. He is in much demand
provincially and nationally as a guest lecturer in the area of health law and
associated issues
Dr. Torneck, is Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, Faculty of
Dentistry, where he held the position of Chair of the Department of
Endodontics and Co-chair of the Post-graduate Department of
Endodontics. He continues to teach part-time in the graduate endodontic
program at the University of Toronto and Nova Southeastern University.
He has served as a consultant and senior staff member to the dental divisions
at Mt. Sinai Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, has
authored many scientific papers, and contributed chapters to 19 textbooks
related to dental practice and dental science. Dr. Torneck has also
served as an editorial consultant to several national and international scientific
journals , lectured internationally and has served as President of
numerous national and international associations including the American
Board of Endodontics. Dr. Torneck is the recipient of many awards in recognition
of his contributions to the profession and society.
About the Program
Never before has information been disseminated as widely and as rapidly
as it is today. This is particularly true of scientific information. This places a
special onus on those who develop the science, publish the science, and
are influenced by the science, to ensure that the information disseminated,
is factually correct and free of bias. This panel will delve into the
responsibility of those engaged in scientific experimentation, in this case,
experimentation in dental science, to prominently disclose the source of
all funding and to report their results fully and truthfully. Next it will define
the responsibility of the editor to ensure that the science is original and
that each paper is reviewed for content by a panel of conscientious and
knowledgeable experts, and to ensure that issues of concern raised by an
expert, is properly addressed by the author(s) prior to the time of publication.
Steps taken to ensure honesty and transparency on the part of the
editor to avoid bias in the selection of authors and papers for publication
will also be considered. Finally, the role of the profession in protecting the
public from scientific misinformation will be highlighted, in particular the
responsibility of the profession to recognize and identify misinformation
when it occurs. Associated with this is the recourse available to the public
when all the level of protection fails
Each panelist will make a 20 minute presentation followed by their participation
in 30 minutes of open dialogue with the attendees.

About the Speaker
In private practice for nearly 30 years, in 2000 Irwin Fefergrad was
appointed the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Royal College of
Dental Surgeons of Ontario. He has the distinction of being the first
lawyer in the history of the Law Society of Upper Canada to achieve a
double specialty: one in civil litigation and the other in health law. He is
the first Ontario lawyer to receive a specialty in the practice of health law.
Irwin is much in demand provincially, nationally and internationally as a
guest lecturer in the area of health law and regulation.
A practicing endodontist, Lionel Lenkinski was a founding member of the
Canadian Dental Protective Association, a mutual benefit group that
provides assistance to dentists with patient disputes and regulatory
matters. He has spoken extensively on the subjects of risk management
and regulatory compliance, as they relate to dental practice. Lionel has a
particular interest in matters related standards of care and conflict
resolution.

Ontario Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme
Court of Canada. Matthew‘s practice is focused on assisting health
professionals including dentists, physicians, psychologists, nurses and

Sebastian G. Ciancio, D.D.S., is Professor and Chairman in the Department
of Periodontology and Director of the Center for Dental Studies at the
State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, in Buffalo, New York. In
addition he is Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at
the University and a Consultant for the Veterans Administration Medical
Center and the Erie County Medical Center.
He has authored or co-authored well over 100 publications pertaining to
periodontal diseases. He is co-author of Clinical Pharmacology for the
Dental Professional and editor of ADA Guide to Dental Therapeutics.
Currently, Dr. Ciancio is Editor of Biological Therapies in Dentistry, a bimonthly
newsletter for dental professionals, Editor of Periodontal
Insights, and Consultant for the Journal of Periodontology.
He is Chairperson of the United States Pharmacopeia Convention, Inc.,
Committee on Revision to Represent Dentistry; Consultant and past cochair
of the Council on Scientific Affairs of the American Dental
Association; Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology;
President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.
In recognition of his contributions to dental science, Dr. Ciancio has
received numerous honors and awards including a Special Citation from

American Council on Exercise (ACE). Dr. Pillersdorf has been a student of
Yoga since 2000 and graduated from the Downward Dog Yoga Teachers
Training Program in Toronto. Dr. Pillersdorf maintains a general dental

Dental professionals are at great risk for repetitive strain injury from sustained
postures that we assume every working day. The focus of this
presentation will be to introduce participants to a few strategies to
‘undo’ the injuries that are perpetuated through incorrect or poor positioning.

Dental therapy has turned to a new medical model, bringing enhanced
treatment for the patient and easier more predictable procedures for the
dental team.
This program focuses on the new technologies that have made this possible:
New caries detection systems are making caries diagnosis more scientific,
accurate, reproducible and clinically significant. Caries detection systems
use various forms of light technology from laser to LED to reveal caries at an
early stage. These technologies will be compared and evaluated. The diode
laser has become the essential soft tissue hand piece for the dental practice.
User friendly laser technology keeps periodontal treatment in the general

MEDIATIONS REPORT
Gilbert Chapnick, D.D.S.
The Toronto Academy continues to assist the four Toronto ODA component societies with administrative
assistance in the mediation process. Each society appoints a mediation committee of at least three
members chaired by a senior member of the committee. When a written concern is raised by a patient
and brought forth through the ODA process, the issue is investigated by the commitee of the members
component society. The Academy assists in all aspects of the dispute with regards to phone calls,
release of information, consent, gathering of details and letters and documentation. The process strictly
follows the guidelines established by the ODA and is running smoothly thanks to the dedicated
committee members and the Academy staff. Within the last year approximately 20 written complaints
have been reviewed most having been resolved satisfactorily.
Good communication, good records and offering treatment within the capabiltites and qualifications
of the practitioner will help to ensure a satisfied patient and avoid the stress of mediation that sometimes becomes necessary despite
our best efforts. Sometimes a complaint is registered without anticipation, however often times it is possible to recognize an unhappy
patient before a complaint is initiated and for these times it is important to seek advice early from the many resources available to us in
an attempt to avoid an escalating situation.

Service Award Recipient
Arthur Zwingenberger
Arthur and his wife Dagmar live in Lucerne, Switzerland. His daughter Allison is a professor of
radiology for Veterinary medicine at the University of California at Davis. His son Andrew is an
economist with an MBA in international marketing from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
Andrew is working in the family business, SciCan Ltd., and is presently expanding the medical
division on an international basis.
SciCan Ltd. was founded in 1957 by Arthur’s father Arno Zwingenberger. The company was a
Canadian distributor of medical and dental products imported from around the world. After
finishing his MBA in economics at U of T, Arthur joined his father with the vision of expanding
the dental activities of Lux and Zwingenberger Ltd., as the company was called in those days.
Arno Zwingenberger passed away in 1975, and Arthur has been guiding the firm ever since.
In the late eighties SciCan Ltd. began to morph into the manufacturer and exporter of highly innovative Statim rapid sterilization
technology ,which made routine sterilization of ALL instruments in the dental office possible. Statim has become a household
word in dental offices but also in Ophthalmic suites, cosmetic surgical suites and in OR’s for rapid reprocessing. Statim is
sold in 92 countries around the world.
Machine washing of soiled instruments has been SciCan‘s preoccupation for the last 5 years, and is now becoming the new
standard in many jurisdictions. Hydrim is the way to disinfect and wash instruments before sterilization without risk to the dental
assistant, and makes validation of the process possible.
SciCan’s latest entry in the infection control range of products is Optim, the buffered hydrogen peroxide family of disinfectants,
which leave no toxic residues and have extremely high efficacy ratings.
As much as Arthur identifies the milestones in his
career with the products brought to market, he
never loses sight of the fact that the key to these
company achievements has been the team at
SciCan that has developed these products, makes
them to exacting quality standards and provides
service and consulting to our clients.
Our latest achievement in providing value to our
dental customer base are the lectures we put on
with our dealers, making sense of the complex
regulatory environment surrounding infection
control , and helping the staff to develop routines
to protect patients, staff and practitioner, all the
while making sure that the practice is prepared
against legal claims.
We look forward to continued challenges in the
dental environment, which we will try to master
with our wonderful team at SciCan, and with continued
close contact with our dental customer
base which has been an inspiration for 50 years.

Dr Barry J. Sessle
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Dr Barry J. Sessle is Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry
and Faculty of Medicine and a member of the Centre for the Study of Pain,
and is the holder of a Canada Research Chair. He is also an elected Fellow of
the Royal Society of Canada and member of the Canadian Academy of
Science. He is Past-President of the Canadian Pain Society and Past-President
of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP); he has also
served as President of the International Association for Dental Research
(IADR) and President of the Canadian Association for Dental Research. His
other honours include the IADR Oral Sciences Award, the IADR J.J. Pindborg International Prize in Oral Biology, the
Distinguished Career Award of the Canadian Pain Society, Honorary member of the IASP and of the American Academy
of Orofacial Pain, and honorary doctorates (D.Sc.) from McGill University and Aalborg University (Denmark). Dr Sessle
obtained his dental training from the University of Sydney (Australia) and his Ph.D. in neurophysiology from the
University of New South Wales (Australia) in the 1960s. After post-doctoral research at the U.S. National Institute of
Dental Research, he joined the University of Toronto in 1971. He was Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry from 1990-2001.
Dr Sessle has co-authored or edited 11 books, published over 300 journal articles and book chapters, and delivered over
330 invited lectures in numerous countries; he also serves on the Editorial Board of 8 scientific journals and since 1998
has been Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Orofacial Pain. His research into orofacial pain and neuromuscular function
and dysfunction has been continuously supported for over 35 years by both the Canadian Institutes of Health Research
and the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
