A short plea to senior drivers ••• Lynn and I need observers for Novice races on Saturday. To<br />

date, it appears that it is the same few individuals who are willing to do more than their<br />

share., However, so far this year, MOST drivers asked to observe have been "to() busy". This<br />

is particularly true with open wheel drivers. In order to give the best constructive advise<br />

to novice open wheel drivers, we need help from senior drivers of similar cars~.; So we ask if<br />

you wouldn't mind stopping in at our van and volunteering to help our new driv¢:ts.<br />

NOVICE DRIVErW who are in a position to be upgraded to A.R.R. please observe the following<br />

procedures: (1) fill out two entry forms-one for the novice race and one for ~ach senior<br />

race you wish to enter (2) if you successfully complete your novice race on Saturday, then<br />

check at registration on Sunday to see if you have been upgraded (3) then report to the<br />

Licen~e Director to review your log book, and.receive your A.R.R. License. And remember<br />

even though you have been upgraded to A.RoR. status you are still in the novic~ program<br />

and must report to the License Director upon arrival at the track, and before you go out<br />

on the track to practice. ·<br />

A.R.R~ drivers who are ready to be upgraded to I.R.R.: (1)-~hen you report into the License<br />

Director at the track please pick out your senior number and ask to have it he:j.;d (2) remember<br />

that in order to be upgraded to I.R.R. you must successfully compete in three senior races<br />

on at least two different tracks. (3) you will receive your license in the mail, if you ~<br />

have been upgraded. (4) Please do not ask if you've been upgraded on Sunday afternoon. We..,<br />

do not recei-ve aay results .or infractions until at least on~_ hour after the track closes,<br />

for the day, ·and therefore we have no idea whether or not you are upgraded until we have<br />

time 'to process this information. ·<br />

Here are a few final reminders:<br />

1) Day-glo panels;-be sure you display a day-glo panel DOTH front and back. there is no~<br />

need 'for "N" on a novice car-just the day-glo. If upgraded to A.RoH., place an "X" over<br />

day-glo.<br />

2) Corner Observation: if you still have corner observation to do, please m~e points of<br />

pbserving on as many corners as possible. The more types of corners observed,--the more<br />

will be learned-when doing_, corner observation please go not wander between corners' wait<br />

for an official vehicle to move you.<br />

3). during a race, if a car goes to the paddock area, that car cannot return tp the track.<br />

FROM THE DESK OF THE NOISE CONTROL OFFICER-JACK DANTON<br />

As you can see from the reading the majority of the cars are to loud. You have only 2<br />

more rp.ces leftbefore you have to meet the 100 db level. Now is the time to experiment.<br />

Dy now you should know about where you are noise wise. 1 or 2 or maybe 3 db. oi:m be dEopped<br />

by removingm~eaphones, extending tailpipelength, down turned exhaust tip ql_:. something<br />

like this, but i~. you have to drop 5 or more a muffler will be necessary. Good mufflers<br />

will :qot hurt horsepower one small Improved Production car gained 3 hp by adding a muffler.<br />

As yo'* can see the levels at S.I.R. were slightly lower than PIR on Westwood. This was due<br />

to thd atmospheric conditions in some cases and test locations, especially for the Fords.<br />

I am trying to work out a better test method that will take out lhhese things into account.<br />

If you change your exhausr system let me know, and I will try to get a reading on you for<br />

sure. I am now driving a red 67 Dodge P.U. with a camper, so I shouldn't be too hard to ~<br />

1. No trailers are to be loaded in the Paddock area until afger the last race.<br />

2. Note on your entry form where two or more drivers are entered with the same car. If<br />

this is not done, we will not be responsible for a driver missing his race due to<br />

scheduling~<br />

3. Paddock space will be first come first serve except for spaces marked "Reserved Parking".<br />

CAMPING:<br />

Camping at the Track is allowed, however, the Main Gates will be locked at 9:30PM<br />

on Friday night and 12:00 MicUright on Saturday Night.


FROM THE DESK OF THE RACE STE\vARD-DA VE PEASE<br />

L There is toQ much hal;'d chargin going on among formula car drivers, in situations where<br />

.hard chaging is not.only illegal, but unwise. Complaints are still surfacing about the Formula<br />

Ford/etc~ race at S.I.Ra, mostly variations on vimlations of the waving yellow flag rule. The ~<br />

turn workers were too busy trying to clear the track to record infractions, so it was impossibl~<br />

to reconstruct any feasible form of disciplinary action after the race that would have been<br />

fair to all. I am also hearing about dangerous driving in the Formula Vees. Possible solutions<br />

include fi~lding a special team of driver observers to do nothing but record infractions in<br />

the open-wheel races, calling for the black flag where 1..rarranted and yielding lap deductions<br />

where danger is less extreme. Something must be done before someone gets hurt, and if the<br />

drivers can 1 t resist the glassy-eyed Grand Prix trip, then they vlill be singled out for<br />

special attentiono<br />

2. Lest anyone be misled by the note last bulletin about porting heads, here is some clarification<br />

as stated in a recent letter to a driver: Section 14ol, Page 44 specifically says<br />

that shapes of ports may not be altered. The provision to permit enlarging ports to stock<br />

manifold gasket size is only for the purpose of matching the manifold to the head. To fulfill<br />

the rule, the port should be tapered immediately back to stock size.<br />

3o Some of the cars I weighed at SIR were so close to the limit it would have sccired me if<br />

they were mine.<br />

4. Production car drivers will be happy to know that a request for a rule change concerning<br />

allowable. tire widths has been received" It has been sent to your Contest Board Reps for a<br />

vote... Make your feelings knovm to your CDR now, and insist that he send back the ballot.. I'm<br />

not to keen on midyear rule changes, but it is a problem ..<br />

5. The question has been asked about maxium-nllowable tailpipe length with mufflers fitted.<br />

The rul_e ·now says 11 to the outer extremity of the body", so that's where it 'Should end. If<br />

the question meant, can we hang mufflers aft of the car body, the answer is NOa<br />

6. I was.really bothered about the way little kids, and I mean little kids were running<br />

aound the pits at SIR without any attention, playing in the paddock roads and daring back<br />

and forth into/toward the racing pits and back. The danger should be obvious. ' ~<br />

7. No matter what happs under item 4, above, tires still have to be covered by the fenders ..,<br />

in all closed-wheel classese There were still a few offenders at Kent. The grace period<br />

has expired. No further excuses will be entertained. What I'm trying to say is, get them<br />

tires inside them fendersa My thanks to those who have complied. I appreciate·- the effort.
