FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT—DOUG MOE
PACE 1
A large thank you to the Sports Car Club of B.C. for the improvements to
Westwood. I don't know which I like best, the new paved pits or the
filling of the holes and the covering of the stumps around the surface.
We had a large entry and near perfect weather, which added up to a great
weekend of racing. I had the unplanned pleasure of watching Sundays races
from the sidelines and was quite impressed with the tightness of the races
in most classes. I saw driving skill and courtesy all day. I was very
impressed and proud of all but one driver in a BMW that re-entered the
course after a 4 wheel off against the orders of the turn personnel and
infront of two cars that had to come to a complete stop to avoid an
accident. We keep our insurance cost down by keeping accidents down and
our turn personnel do a great job. They are in a proper area to see hazards
and help drivers avoid them. Please obey them at all times.
A reminder to new drivers. When crossing the border you are covered by
the ICSCC bond to bring your car into Canada. Check 1978 Competition
Regulations #607 for details of its use.
Minor release forms are coming in slowly. Any minor must have this
form filled out to get into the paddock area.
FROM THE DESK OF THE NOISE CONTROL OFFICER—SANDEE STEVENS
Here are a few DBA reading from the past three races. The cooperation from
the drivers who have been warned has really been super. A great big thank
you to all of you.
FROM THE DESK OF THE RACE STEWARD - BILL ROOT
Let's all hear it for sunshine at Westwood for a Conference Race! The weather was
outstanding, the competition was outstanding and the Race Officials were outstanding.
Denny and I had very few problems and had a very enjoyable time.
There were some shunts. Mac Russell made a BIG exit at Turn 1, but fortunately, ther
were no injuries. The safety equipment withstood the test.
240Z #794 was disqualified for having modified exhaust system on a Production car.
#426 C/W was penalized 1 lap for passing under a yellow flag condition.
There were 13 Novice drivers who were upgraded and drove excellent races on Sunday.
It is good to see these drivers giving serious competition to our experienced drivers.
Some reminders: Denny will comment on filling out registration forms for each race
entered. Class designators are required on both sides of the car. Slow down on the
cool-off lap - some drivers are still racing while others are slowing down. Remember to
take it easy. Smoked windows in sedans was discontinued this year because following
drivers could not see hand signals. This rule will be enforced. Also, hand signals should
be clearly made.
Again, overall it was an excellent weekend. We are looking forward to seeing everyone
in Seattle.
FROM THE POINTS KEEPER - SANDI BARCHECK
Please note the following chnages in distribution of Championship Points. See 1978
Competition Regulations, Section 5, pages 9 & 10, entitled "Championship Points. To
Section 502B add: "If only 1 car in class, that car must complete half the laps of
the overall race winner in order to receive a 1st place trophy and points." To Section
502B, also add to line 1: "and receive the checkered flag."
The following are changes that have been made in points distribution since they were
subtotaled in the May 15th Memo (#6):
D PRODUCTION (from 1st race in Westwood, April 1-2, 1978)
#48 Jim O'Dair DNF 1 point (rather than 4)
#51 Alan Wendler DNF 1 point (rather than 3)
C SEDAN (from 3rd race at SIR, April 29-30, 1978)
#96 Mike Hawthorne 1st CS 9 points (rathen than 0)
# 9 Jay Wratten 2nd CS 6 points (rather than 8)
#09 Cheryl Kinnamon 3rd CS 4 points (rather than 5)
Other results in that race group remain unchanged.
A SPORTS RACING (from 3rd race at SIR, April 29-30, 1978)
# 89 Bruce Leven 1st ASR 11 points (unchanged)
#118 Ken Deckman 2nd ASR 8 points (rather than 5)

FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSISTANT RACE STEWARD - DENNY GOODWIN
TO ALL DRIVERS (Specifically Novices and "X" Drivers) - When entering an event and
when you are planning to race in more than one race, be sure and fill out a separate
ntry form (pink form) for each race you plan to run. Even being more specific - if you
are an "X" driver and you are planning to run the Novice race as well as the Senior
race, be absolutely sure to fill out an entry form on both races and be sure to check
"Novice" block on the Novice race entry form (in the left corner). One driver was
disqualified from the Novice race because of failure to fill out entry for the Novice
race.
FORMULA CAR DRIVERS - several drivers were noted with the rollbar below the helmet or
in close proximity thereof. The rulebook states there is a 1" minimum from the top of
the helmet to the top of the rollbar. Either lose some of your own padding or remove
some from your driving seat. We have our eyes on you.
DENNY GOODWIN AS RACE STEWARD
Hi, there! This is your friendly Race Steward here and I would like to comment on the
past, funfilled weekend at Westwood.
From the very beginning, things looked bright as the sun led us up the hill to the
circuit. The entire weekend was just great. The drivers are to be commended on fine racing
efforts and true sportsmanship display. As you may have guessed, the job of Race Steward
can be drudgery; however, between Bill and I (as well as the various drivers on the
Competition Committee) we have established a direct communication with the drivers as
well as the organizers of the event. There is no better feeling than to walk through the
paddock and be able to talk, laugh and joke with drivers and crews and yet still listen
to and try and resolve any problems which may surface. This is the purpose behind
Conference racing. We are Club racers and we have established and organized our own
racing events for years. It is meant to be highly competitive on the track - just plain
fun during the whole weekend. We are very fortunate to have an organization such as
'onference. No where in the U.S. or Canada does such an organization exist. If we can
have events such as last weekend's at Westwood, we will have little need to ask for more.
I mean this sincerely - I truly enjoy working with all of you.
FROM THE DESK OF LYNN COUPLAND - HISTORIAN
RACE OFFICIALS - Let's have some pictures of your participation in Conference racing.
Without your valiant efforts the Conference races wouldn't exist. So please send some
candid shots of your crew at work. Send to Lynn Coupland, 812 Wordsworth Ave. Trail,
B.C. V1R 2E9.
TO THE EDITOR AND THE CONFERENCE "NEWSPAPER": (Reprinted by request of Sonja Banton)
Today was my first experience working registration for drivers and pit crew members.
I was appalled at the attitude of some of the men and women who approached our table.
Since their driver had not entered their name on his crew list, there was no pit pass for
them. This does not entitle them to badger and swear at the people manning the registration
booth. It is possible that my 2 hours there today are not a true picture of what it is
like, but by the comments from the others working with me I don't think this is the case.
If these people cannot handle themselves in a business-like fashion, I think they should be
barred from further participation in our events. There does appear to be a need for some
communication with the drivers from the registration table as there are people left out,
and it seems that drivers, even though they know their responsibility to sign their people
up, do not have a very good track record in this area. If this isn't practical, then some
effort should be made to improve the conduct of people when a problem arises with
getting in the track. It's not fair for them to hassle people who are working to
the race for their benefit.
SANDY DUTRA
PAGE 4
MESSAGE FROM ANDY BARCHECK
The tools that we use to work on our race cars are something we can tend to take for
granted anted. But they are as essential to the racing effort as the race car itself. I had
the unfortunate experience of having most of my tools stolen from my locked van while
parked at the Port Moody Inn the Saturday night of the last Westwood race. While there
little that can be done to prevent someone from breaking into even a locked vehicle,
there are a few things that can be done to discourage the would-be thief, to help in the
return turn of the stolen property and to aid in the insurance settlement.
Don't stay at motels near race tracks that are known to be frequented by racers or that
a number of race cars parked in the lot. Park in a well-lighted area near a main
entrance. Try to keep tools out of sight while in your parked vehicle. The marking of
your tools will not prevent their theft but will aid in their return to you if they are
recovered by the police (or are borrowed by other racers). Preparing an itemized list of
all of your tools is very time-consuming but is something you will have to do anyway for
the insurance settlement after they are stolen - so why not do it now when you have the
tools in front of you. A list prepared from memory will tend to be shorter than the one
prepared by going through the tool box now. Nearly as helpful, but less time-consuming, is
to take pictures of all of your tools, both the ones you leave at home and the ones you
take to the races. The value of tools is deceptive as even a small tool box can hold
hundreds of dollars worth of tools. Even if you have them insured, they will be
depreciated by the insurance company to about half of their replacement cost.
So, if any of you Canadian racers are approached by someone trying to sell a Craftsman
6-drawer tool chest full of tools engraved with the initials "JAB" (yes, my first name
Joseph), I would appreciate it if you would call the Port Moody police (and me). Also,
as you lay this Memo down, pick up your Instamatic and go out to the garage. Someday you
may be glad you did.
