Ensure <strong>in</strong>tegration<br />

The council is the key mechanism <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g the ethics activities<br />

undertaken by departments, programs, services, and offices across your<br />

facility. Council members should represent diverse areas throughout the<br />

organization from which ethics issues arise, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g cl<strong>in</strong>ical care services,<br />

research, and bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istration. Council members are responsible <strong>for</strong><br />

help<strong>in</strong>g to identify ethics issues across the facility that might benefit from the<br />

work of the council, such as ethics quality gaps that might be appropriate <strong>for</strong><br />

the preventive ethics team.<br />

Monitor per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

The council is responsible <strong>for</strong> oversee<strong>in</strong>g the activities of the Integrated<strong>Ethics</strong><br />

program and act<strong>in</strong>g to support its implementation. The council should<br />

ensure that the facility achieves the program’s implementation goals,<br />

completes assessment tools and reports per<strong>for</strong>mance monitors to VISN<br />

leadership. The council is also responsible <strong>for</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g plans and tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

action on the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs from the Integrated<strong>Ethics</strong> Facility Workbook and<br />

Staff Survey. The council should establish mechanisms to monitor progress<br />

toward implement<strong>in</strong>g these plans and the overall Integrated<strong>Ethics</strong> program<br />

effectively.<br />

Network externally<br />

All council members are <strong>in</strong>vited to share their program’s activities, best<br />

practices, and lessons learned. The <strong>National</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Ethics</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />

Care will provide <strong>for</strong>ums where this can occur. Check our website, vaww.<br />
