Thank you for your kindness and
generosity to our parish.
Remembering Your Parish
The most practical way to make a significant gift to your
parish is through your estate plan. This can take the form of
designating Visitation in your will, living trust or as a beneficiary
in a life insurance policy or retirement account.
Such gifts are wholly revocable while you are alive and
may save significant estate taxes at your death.
If you are considering remembering Visitation in your
estate plans, please call the Visitation Rectory Office at
630-834-6700 or the Joliet Diocese Development Office at
815-834-4031. Thank you.
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus
Sunday, January 9, 2011
Visitation Church
Friday, January 14, 2011
7:00 P.M.
Celebrant
Bishop Joseph Siegel
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the
Lord Jesus. Liturgically, we end the Christmas season and
we celebrate the beginning of the public ministry of the
Lord Jesus. Today’s gospel presents us with an “adult”
Jesus at the River Jordan. He is baptized by John, the heavens
open and the Father’s voice is heard. This is my beloved
Son—listen to Him! With His baptism, Jesus begins His
public life and invites His disciples to follow Him. He
extends the same invitation to all of us through our
Baptism. This week affords us an opportunity to pray for
those who will follow Jesus in a special way as priests,
brothers and sisters. Vocations are everybody’s business,
and all of us need to attend to promoting and nurturing
vocations whenever and wherever we can. Pray
that we may have priests after the Heart of Christ!
Visitation Parish Catholic Reading Club
God, Philosophy and Universities
The Visitation Parish Catholic
Reading Club will be discussing
Alasdair MacIntyre’s God, Philosophy
and Universities at our January meeting
on 20 January. Professor MacIntyre
recently retired after a quarter century in
the Philosophy department at the
University of Notre Dame. This work
was the main text for the course of the
same name that was the most popular class in the College of Arts
and Letters at the University. In this book, MacIntyre provides a
survey of the development, evolution and contributions of the
Catholic philosophical tradition, as informed not only by Jewish
and Christian Revelation, but also as influenced by the ancient
Greek pagan philosophers and by theistic philosophers in the
Islamic and Jewish traditions. In line with Catholic thinkers from
Augustine to Aquinas to our own Pope Benedict XVI,
MacIntyre argues that there is no incompatibility between the
truths of faith and those of reason since both flow the same
Source of Truth. On the contrary, the methods and aims of faith
and reason, while distinct, support one another, and any perceived
inconsistency between the two stems from a misunderstanding
of our finite minds confronted with infinite realities,
from an unwarranted intrusion of one of the disciplines into an
area not appropriate to it, or from restrictive theories of what we
can know by reason. While there has been much discussion in
recent years of the proper role of the Catholic university in our
day, Dr. MacIntyre argues strenuously that it is precisely within
the university setting that the truths of the Catholic faith are most
fruitfully discussed, developed and defended. This book is available
through Amazon.com and other booksellers.
The January session will be held on January 20 from 9:30
until 11:30 A.M. in Podesta Hall. For a copy of the study guide
for this session or of the book list for the balance of the year,
please call Renee Regole at 630-832-7903.
Please Join Us To Pray For Our Priests
Join us on Monday evenings in the Church at 7:00 P.M.
during this year dedicated to the Holy Eucharist, “the source and
summit of our faith.”
We pray the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet followed
by special prayers for priests, Benediction and a blessing with
the St. Peregrine relic.
Your servant,
Deacon Jim Eaker
I Look at Him and He Looks and Me
Often a deep fervent look at Christ may make the most
fervent prayer. “I look at Him and He looks at me” is the
most perfect prayer.
Christ offers Himself in the Eucharist, in His adorable
Presence. Receive Him in a spirit of poverty and repentance
of heart, with the soul of a child, until the very evening of
your years.
In remaining before the Eucharist for long periods of
time, many people have let themselves be penetrated down
to the very depths of their being. For all who consent to a
long process of maturation, little by little their inner self is
built up, without their knowing how. And, by prayer that is
always simple, they are somehow drawn towards Christ.
He is the one who bears with us the great sorrows of life
and our broken relationships. He is also the one who, risen
from the dead, rejoices with us, today, tomorrow and
always. (from Seeking the Heart of God)
Look at Him and He will look at you. The adoration
chapel is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Help keep the
chapel perpetual. To register, please call Owen or Gail at
630-573-0033.
Evening of Recollection
There will be an Evening of Recollection for women
this Wednesday, January 12, at 7:30 P.M in the Church.
The evening includes two meditations by a priest of Opus
Dei, time for silent prayer, private confession and benediction.
Books for spiritual reading will be sold.
Everyone is welcome. Bring a friend.
Thank you to all who participated in the Sharing Tree.
Because of you, many children and adults spent their
Christmas knowing that someone cared. Approximately
1,500 gifts were given to 900 people.
It takes many people to make this a success, namely, the
Scouts, the Visitation School 7 th and 8 th graders, the Youth
Group, the women who prepare the ornaments and all the
helpers who sort and pack the gifts.
This year 45 families at Precious Blood Church in
Chicago received Christmas gifts and more than 75 people
at the Franciscan Outreach Center in Chicago received
gifts. Many people in our area also had a Merry Christmas
because of Visitation’s Sharing Tree.
A special thank you to the Youth Group and their parents
who waited and helped load the trucks.
The Classified Section
Many of our parishioners are affected by unemployment. Visitation’s “Classified Section” is a response to aid in networking
within the parish community. This section lists people who need jobs by advertising only information pertinent to work.
Those who need work may contact Deacon Tony at the Rectory and send him their resumes. We will keep them confidential and
publicize the skill sets anonymously. Our hope is that potential employers or friends of potential employers within this parish may
be able to help. If an employer contacts the parish office, Deacon Tony or Fr. Matt will act as the liaison for them.
A more extensive list and more information and resources are now available via our website.
Francis. Classes will be held every Monday and Wednesday,
6:30–9:30 P.M. until March 9. Please bring this opportunity of
service to prayer. Sr. Mary Fran and Fr. Peter would be glad
to speak or meet with you.
At the request of Bishop Sartain, Pope Benedict has granted a plenary indulgence for those who make a pilgrimage to the
Visitation Perpetual Adoration Chapel of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, during the Joliet Diocesan Year of the Eucharist,
April 1, 2010–June 26, 2011. To receive this indulgence, the pilgrim must have a firm detachment from all sin, receive the
sacrament of penance within either a week before or a week after the visit chapel, have attended Mass and received communion
the same day and offer prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father (an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be). While
making the pilgrimage, the person must spend a period of time in silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and conclude
that time of prayer by offering the Our Father, reciting the Profession of Faith, and offering an invocation to Our Lord (eg. O
Sacrament Most Holy...)
The elderly, the sick and all those who, for some serious reason, are not able to leave their home are also able to gain the
Plenary Indulgence. It would be granted to them when, with a mind detached from any sin and with the intention of carrying
out the three usual conditions as soon as possible, they devoutly recite the prayers mentioned above in the presence of some
small image of Our Lord Jesus Christ, humbly offering their own sufferings or the misfortunes of their own life to the mercy
of God.
A Plenary Indulgence may be gained once a day for oneself or for someone who has died. For more information on this
indulgence and for the list of other diocesan pilgrimage churches and chapels, please see the Joliet Diocesan Year of the
Eucharist webpage. http://www.dioceseofjoliet.org/ye/pilgrimages.asp.
