Dear Members of the College Community,
Sometimes it is easy to question God when natural disasters hit close to home. So
often we become de-sensitised when we see misery on a global scale projected into
our lounge rooms every day, and it is only when disaster strikes in our part of the
world that we are roused from a certain complacency. The recent floods in
Queensland galvanised the nation into a desire to do whatever we can to alleviate the
suffering of the flood victims.
The earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand also brings home to us the realisation
that “there, but for the grace of God, go we.” And from our position of relative
comfort, we hope to assist by initiating fundraising efforts, the proceeds of which will
go to those who need help in our own country and to our New Zealand neighbours.
There is no reversing the catastrophic events which have taken place. Our only
option is to move on with faith and love. The following prayer was distributed by the
Office of the Most Reverend John A. Dew, the Archbishop of Wellington:
Prayer After an Earthquake
Lord, at times such as this,
when we realise that the ground beneath our feet
is not as solid as we had imagined,
we plead for your mercy.
As the things we have built crumble about us,
we know too well how small we truly are
on this ever-changing, ever-moving,
fragile planet we call home.
Yet you have promised never to forget us.
Do not forget us now.
Today, so many people are afraid.
They wait in fear for the next tremor.
They hear the cries of the injured amid the rubble
They roam the streets in shock at what they see.
And they fill the dusty air with wails of grief
and the names of the missing dead.
Comfort them, Lord, in this disaster.
Be their rock when the earth refuses to stand still,
and shelter them under your wings
when homes no longer exist.
Embrace in your arms
those who died so suddenly this day.
Console the hearts of those who mourn,
and heal the pain of bodies on the brink of death.
Pierce, too, our hearts with compassion,
we who watch from afar,
as the poorest on this side of the earth
find only misery upon misery.
Move us to act swiftly this day,
to give generously every day,
to work for justice always,
and to pray unceasingly for those
without hope.
And once the shaking has ceased,
the images of destruction
have stopped filling the news,
and our thoughts return to life’s
daily rumblings,
let us not forget that we are all
your children
and they, our brothers and sisters.
We are all the work of your hands.
For though the mountains leave their
place
and the hills be tossed to the ground,
your love shall never leave us,
and your promise of peace will never
be shaken.
Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.
Blessed be the name of the Lord,
now and forever.
What a Day!
In spite of a somewhat inauspicious start weather-wise, Secondary House Beach Day turned into a fabulous
event, as it does every year! Hours of preparation had gone into the setting up of the various activity stations
which included: Tug of War, Beach Flags, Sand Sculptures, “Balloon Burst” Three-legged Soccer, Water Relay
and Fast Track plus the Iron Woman Events. House Competition was fierce and frenetic and the final points
literally came down to the wire. Third place was taken out by Lourdes on 507, with Carmel and Loreto sharing
first place on scores of 590 apiece.
In the world of the AFL, we might have had to stage a re-match next week. However, this year both Houses will
be inscribed on the Secondary House Beach Day Shield for 2011 and next year we shall do it all again.
Thank you to all staff who entered into the day with such enthusiasm, especially to Ms Julia O’Rourke whose
organisational skills are second to none. Thank you also to the students in attendance whose behaviour,
demeanour and cooperation were truly amazing. We have so many girls who adopt an approach to school life
which rejoices in all opportunities, while at the same time being very conscious of the way in which we live in
community. Such an approach must stand them in good stead for a future filled with promise.
Introduction of New Mass Texts in Australia
Later this year we shall be praying and singing the words of the revised English translation of the People’s Parts
of the Mass. This will be the first step, as members of the Australian Church, towards receiving the full English
text of the Roman Missal by November.
2011 will be a time of transition for Catholic worshipping communities. Within the framework given by the
Australian Catholic bishops, communities will choose how they will gradually implement the text changes.
Phase One is currently in progress and will continue to Pentecost, 2011. Within parish communities, new Mass
settings are being investigated and choices made from the six approved by the Australian bishops. In this First
Phase communities may sing the new texts but, when spoken, the existing texts will be used. So there may be
changes in the following parts of the Mass: Lord Have Mercy, Gloria, Holy Holy, Memorial Acclamation, Amen and
Lamb of God. No other changes will be made.
During March Father Michael Tate will commence the celebration of Class Masses in the College Chapel. So we
may have the opportunity to trial some of the new settings as the year progresses.
My School
Tomorrow, March 4 th , the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) will launch the
My School 2.0 website (www.myschool.edu.au).
The website provides profiles on each school, including ours, and includes information about the school, such as
the numbers of students and staff, attendance rates and results from the national literacy and numeracy tests.
For the first time, the website now also includes information about school finances and student gain in
NAPLAN.
The website shows comparisons between our school’s NAPLAN results and those from schools serving
students from statistically similar backgrounds across Australia. The website also shows information which
indicates how students are performing over time on the literacy and numeracy tests. Financial information for
schools is now shown, but this is for 2009 only.
Parents and carers are encouraged to explore the site. It is worth noting that Mount Carmel will use the
information in conjunction with other information and data to inform our teaching and learning programmes to
seek the best outcomes for our students. As we have always done with any assessment tool, we will review the
areas where we are doing well and also where we can make improvements. NAPLAN results provide one means
of assessment across one week of a student’s Grades 3, 5, Year 7 or 9 studies, they should never be seen in
isolation. Any questions regarding NAPLAN results should be addressed to your child’s teacher/s, or the
ACARA helpline can be accessed on 1300 895 563
Our Opening Mass
Last Tuesday our College Community came together to celebrate our Opening Mass and to commission the Staff
and Student Leaders of our school.
Our thanks go to Father Michael Tate who brings to our liturgies such wisdom and integrity. Thank you to Mr
Gerard McNulty and Mrs Caroline Wilson-Haffenden for their preparation for the Mass, to Ms Dorothy Lincoln
for coordinating the music and to the cantors, readers and servers who participate always with such dignity and
grace.

During their Leadership Induction, our College Leaders and House Captains crafted their Vision Statement for
2011 and it seems appropriate to present it to you today.
Good leaders must serve before they can lead.
As the Student Leaders of 2011, we seek to inspire, motivate and empower the students of Mount Carmel College to be the best that
they can be.
We are proud of our College and its traditions and we are privileged to follow in the footsteps of the Sisters of Charity.
As we grow in leadership, we shall hear and value the contribution of all and welcome both challenge and opportunity.
We shall strive to initiate change with both wisdom and realism.
Leading by example, we recognise the importance of reliability, dedication and enthusiasm in the fulfilment of our role.
Inspired by Gospel values, we shall lead with honour, grace and integrity.
Beach Day Thanks
Early drizzle on Friday Morning at Seven Mile Beach was no portent of the day ahead. By the time the first bus
load of students arrived, the skies were clear and we were ready for a great day. And there was no shortage of
House spirit, fantastic team work and determined efforts by all. The tied outcome, with Loreto and Carmel
scoring exactly the same number of points and Lourdes not far behind, was a fitting end to a competition which
had been closely fought all day.
A major contribution to the success of the day was the fantastic assistance provided by the many parents who
came to help or watch. For some it was the first time and we hope to see them at future Beach Days, while
others were back to help for the third, fourth or even fifth Beach Day in a row! It goes without saying that this
assistance is invaluable in ensuring the smooth running of the day and we are very grateful for this fantastic
support.
Welcome and Information Evening
We are looking forward to welcoming parents of secondary students to the College next Thursday evening,
March 10 th , for the Secondary Welcome and Information Evening. A letter was sent home this week, outlining
the format of the evening and the topics of grade interest that will be covered in each presentation. Although
from year to year some information remains the same, there is information specific to each grade that will be
covered, including an outline of a newly developed Year 8 Unit: Being Well, some preliminary information abut
the Year 9 Canberra trip for parents of our current Year 8s, an insight into the VET and Pathways Planning
programmes at Mount Carmel and a focus on cyber safety. The evening provides an opportunity for you to
meet your daughter’s Home Room Teacher and Year Co-Ordinator and to ask any questions you may have
about any aspect of College life and we strongly encourage parents to attend. Returns from the letter sent home
are due back next Tuesday, 8th March.
Student Planner Signing and Homework
The House Competition for Student Planner usage and signing is well under way this term with House points
being awarded to students whose Planners are signed up to date, neatly presented without any decoration on the
front or back covers and used regularly to record Homework in detail.
Homework timetables have been issued to all students and should be secured in Student Planners. Homework
Timetables read in conjunction with the Homework Policy indicate the amount of time students should be
spending on homework for each subject, each night. If students or parents have any concerns about the amount
of homework being set (too much or too little), please do not hesitate to make contact with the relevant subject
teachers.
College Photographs
Primary photographs will be taken on Friday, 11 th March and Secondary photographs on Tuesday, 15 th March.
Thank you to those who have returned their orders already. Orders and payment for the photographs, including
requests for family photographs must be received by Thursday, 10th March. All students must be in full Summer
Uniform for photographs. Sports teams and other group photographs will be taken in Term 3.

Primary Leaders
During these early weeks of the school year, Grade 6 students have been focussing very much on their role as
leaders in the primary school. Recently, the students elected four Primary Leaders who will serve the primary
school community during Term 1. We warmly congratulate the following students:
6 Navy – Julia de Souza and Alice Riseley
6 White – Matilda Sansom and Alice Waggin
Welcome and Information Evening
Grade 6 students and parents will meet this evening in the Drama Studio at 6:00 p.m., following an extended
excursion for students conducted by Peter Mitchell, the Values Education Facilitator at the Tasmanian Catholic
Education Office. We are grateful to Peter for sharing many wise insights about the development of positive
values for life with our students. He will explain the program entitled, Making Jesus Real, at the parent and
student meeting this evening.
Thank you to all parents and carers who attended last Thursday’s Welcome and Information Evening for Kinder
and Grade 1 to 5 students. We trust it was an enjoyable and informative gathering for the good number of
parents who were able to attend.
Photo Day
Photo Day for primary students is on Friday, 11 th March. Please have you child wear his or her full summer
uniform, not the College tracksuit on the day. Many thanks in anticipation for remembering this change to
routine, just when you were getting used to the routine!
Naming Items
Thank you to all families who have clearly named all items needed for school such as drink bottles, lunch boxes
and sunhats. Please ensure that the name is still obvious on each item so it can be easily returned if left in the
playground. Already there are a number of pieces of clothing and an assortment of containers in the lost
property box which are unnamed and, at the moment, unloved!
Health and Wellbeing
At the conclusion of 2010 all Grade 6 to Year 9 students participated in a Health and Wellbeing survey. The
survey asked questions about their level of enjoyment in Health and Physical Education as well as areas for
improvement in 2011. An article was also placed in the Bulletin asking parents to e-mail any concerns or ideas
they may have for the curriculum. In addition, feedback was sought from a number of staff members who
attended Professional Learning sessions relating to girls’ education.
From the information gathered the following curriculum changes have been effected for 2011:
Body Image will now be taught in Year 7 rather than Year 8.
Alcohol and smoking topics have moved from Year 7 to Year 8 and the focus will be extended from the
affects on the body to the legal, social and emotional aspects of these drugs.
National Health is a new topic that will be added to the Year 9 curriculum. Students will investigate health
trends in Australia and the world.
Incontinence and pelvic floor issues has been included in the Year 10 curriculum to increase awareness in
young women.
The “Being Well Challenge” is the new Year 8 Integrated Unit and will be a focus in the Health curriculum.
More information will be provided at the Welcome and Information Evening.
Also as a result of the responses from students, Year 9 and 10 Health will be delivered in the first four weeks of
each term. From next week all Year 9 and 10 students will participate in fitness and sport lessons in their Health
and Wellbeing single and double periods respectively.
Achievements
There are currently a number of Mount Carmel students who are rowing on a regular basis with clubs
such as Sandy Bay and Lindisfarne. In order for the girls to participate in All Schools Regattas, it is
necessary for them to wear school colours, in spite of the fact that Mount Carmel does not have rowing
as a College sport. Our girls are doing very well in the regattas and we congratulate them on their
achievements.
A rowing report from Mr Andrew Dobbie:
“Southern Schools Rowing Regatta – Franklin
The Southern Schools Rowing Regatta was held at Franklin on Saturday, 26 th February 2011 in close to
perfect rowing conditions for most of the day. Mount Carmel College were represented by a keen
squad of first year rowers from Year 9, Chelsea Alderton, Jessica Dobbie, Sarah McCarthy, Kate
Prendergast and Charlotte Stennard who competed in the Quad Sculls, Double Sculls and Single Sculls
events. The Quad Scull coxed by Kate and crewed by Chelsea, Jessica, Sarah and Charlotte rowed
strongly and lead at the halfway mark, only to narrowly miss a place at the finishing line. The College
was well represented in the Double Sculls and Single Sculls with great rows from all, most notably a 1 st
place from Chelsea in her Single Scull event. The next regatta Mount Carmel College will be competing
in is the North West Rowing Regatta at Lake Barrington in late March where there should be a full
contingent of Year 9 and 10 students rowing.”
Also, congratulations to Heather Haas, Bridget Fasnacht, Claire Mackintosh and Anna Mackintosh who
have all been selected for the Under 14 Tasmanian State Water Polo Team. The girls will travel to
Canberra over Easter.
You are invited to forward news of other sporting achievements for inclusion in the Bulletin.
