Issue 12, 3 rd May, 2012M O U N T C A R M E L C O L L E G EA W O R D F R O M T H E P R I N C I P A LDear Members of the College Community,Michael Guinan O.F.M. says that “spirituality” is the in thing these days. Booksand articles dealing with spiritual topics abound. Retreats of all sorts aregaining in popularity. Everywhere one can find a range of personal growth andhuman potential programmes. People are interested in living fuller, deeper, more personal lives.Spirituality is a word much like the word love, in that it is used loosely todescribe a number of things concerning the human condition. However, mostwould agree that it includes an inner sense of being connected to someone orsomething greater than oneself; it is the process of recognising that there ismeaning and purpose to our existence. In fact, spirituality is not an “add-on”extra; it is there already, a part of being human. We are located at:361 Sandy Bay Road,Sandy Bay, TasmaniaOur address is:PO Box 217,Sandy Bay, 7006Contact us at:Ph. (03) 62167900Fax. (03) 62167999or via the Internet:info@mountcarmel.tas.edu.auwww.mountcarmel.tas.edu.auIn his own words Christ affirms that children can, in fact, be more spirituallygrounded than many adults; “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of God likea little child will never enter it.” (Mark10:16)One of the greatest needs of children is to flourish within positive relationships, and spirituality is theirencounter and relationship with God. Spiritual awareness cannot be taught; it is part of the biologicalinheritance that makes us human. So, we need to spend as much time helping our children toexperience God, as we do teaching them about God.This is the reason we offer Reflection Days to our secondary students and why they are so important.Yesterday the Year 8 and Year 9 students spent the day off campus at different locations to look attheir perspective on life and consider the perspectives of others. It is all about positive relationshipsand, as Mary Aikenhead expressed it so well, about being “extensively useful” in the way in which weinteract with community.Thank you to Mr Gerard McNulty and all those staff who assisted with the Reflection Days. Just asspirituality is not an “add-on” extra, such days are not optional. Hopefully parents have had a chanceto share their daughters’ recollections of their experience. Hopefully, the students are in the process oflearning that Christ recognises them as whole persons who should be valued for who they are, not justfor what they may become.Well DoneCongratulations to the Mount Carmel students who provided the Opening Liturgy for the InauguralTasmanian Religious Education Conference last Friday. Their interpretation of the parable of TheGood Samaritan in word, music and movement certainly brought home the lesson for us all of beingMAYWednesday, 2nd Year 8 & 9 Reflection DayMonday, 7th Visiting Performer—Bronwyn VaughanTuesday, 15th Board MeetingTuesday, 15th NAPLAN Assessments commenceWednesday, 16th GYC Information EveningThursday, 17th NAPLAN Assessments finishThursday, 17th Primary Assembly (Grade 4 hosting)Tuesday, 22nd Years 8 & 10 Social Justice presentationMAYWednesday, 23rdThursday, 24thFriday, 25thJUNEMonday, 18thImmunisations—Year 7 GardasilKindergarten Open Day 1.30—2.45pmTerm 1 concludesTerm Two commences

proactive in community rather than disassociating ourselves from things which may be perceived as justtoo difficult. It is also significant that both our Religious Education Coordinator in the Primary School, Miss IdaSaracino and our Secondary Religious Education Coordinator, Mr. Gerard McNulty, conductedworkshops over the two day Conference. This opportunity for them to share professional practice inReligious Education on the topics of “Creatively Working with the Bible” and “Teaching of Parables”respectively allowed us to highlight some of the things which we do and also learn from good practicein other Catholic schools.A Partnership in LearningThank you to those parents who took the opportunity to engage with their daughters in the SecondaryLearning Conferences which occurred last Monday and Tuesday evenings. The presence of teachers, parents and students in this important process allows a three-fold approach to moving forward in orderto achieve the best educational outcomes. In this year of significant changes to the reporting and assessment process at Mount Carmel, the morediscussion that can occur to clarify these changes the better. Finding the time to do this is veryimportant. As our society becomes disconnected with long work hours and a reliance on technologyfor communication, a sense of community can make a real difference. Hopefully face-to-face contact issomething that will always be an integral part of the way in which we work together at Mount Carmel.FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALMrs Laurie WolfePrincipalGuilford Young College 2013 EnrolmentsYear 10 students and staff from Mount Carmel will visit the Hobart Campus of Guilford YoungCollege on Tuesday, 15 th May from 9.15 a.m. to 11.15 a.m., to hear about the enrolment andcounselling process and senior secondary life at GYC.
