Issue 26, 4 th September 2008 M O U N T C A R M E L C O L L E G EDear Members of the College Community,As the 21 st century unfolds, massive technological advances continue to impact onpractically all areas of life in Australia. However, throughout the world there are still 130million children who are not able to attend school. Sadly most of them are girls. Manyother children never complete their Primary schooling.885 million adults, mostly women, are illiterate. We are located at:361 Sandy Bay Road,Sandy Bay, TasmaniaIt would cost the world $12 billion a year to put every child in school by the year 2010.Currently the world spends $1600 each year on the weapons of war. Reducing militaryexpenditure by less than one percent would provide universal primary school education. It is sometimes difficult to convey to our students just how lucky they are to have thechance to gain an education which will equip them to make their way into the futurethrough choice, rather than being constrained by circumstance. As we come to the end ofyet another term, we look forward to working together as a community of teachers, parents and students to consistently ensure the best outcomes for those who attend Mount Carmel.I Choose…to live by choice, not by chance;to make changes, not excuses;to be motivated, not manipulated;to be useful, not used;to excel, not compete;I choose self-esteem, not self-pity.I choose to listen to my inner voicenot the random opinion of othersThe higher you climb, the more you see.The more you see, the less you know. The less you know the more you learnThe more you learn, the higher you climb. The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too highAnd we miss it, but it is too low and we reach it.Our address is:PO Box 217,Sandy Bay, 7006Contact us at:Ph. The presentations from those students who take private music lessons and also from the MountCarmel College Band were a pleasure to experience. Well-supported by parents, carers and grandparents, theafternoon’s programme of instrumental and vocal music was testament both to talent and to consistent practiceroutines. Mount Carmel College, along with all other southern Catholic Secondary colleges, may have theopportunity to be part of a Trade Training Centre, with Guilford Young College as the Registered TrainingOrganisation. Information from the Survey will be very helpful to Mount Carmel as we put together our part ofthe application.A copy of the Survey was also sent home to all parents/ carers of students in Years 7, 8 and 9. Completion shouldnot take longer than 2-3 minutes, and the return of the completed surveys by tomorrow, if they have not alreadybeen forwarded, would be much appreciated.Happy Fathers’ DayHappy Fathers’ Day and best wishes to all our dads and granddads as they celebrate on September 7 th . Theopportunity to spend time with family on this special day is always precious.Thank You!I would like to extend a special vote of thanks to Mr. John Herbert, father of Xavier in Kindergarten. John, proprietor of Sona Gallery in Murray Street, generously provided the materials and the expertise to frame the sixCarchibald pictures which took out the major prizes in the Secondary and Primary sections this year. These pictures will be a feature in the College Library and they certainly look fantastic, professionally framed andproudly on displayWe hope that all members of our College Community have a restful, safe and stimulating break. Hopefully all our studentswill take some time to relax and recharge the batteries before returning to the challenges and achievements of the final term forthe year.Mrs Laurie WolfePrincipalF R O M T H E D E P U T YP R I N C I P A LStaying SafeLast Thursday night our Year 10 students and their parents gathered in the College Hall for Staying Safe, a student

and parent forum, examining issues such as safe partying, drugs and alcohol, the causes and consequences of risktakingbehaviour and road safety. The night featured a diverse and entertaining range of presentations on theseissues by our Year 10 students and an opportunity for questions, including input from panel members, ConstableLeigh Devine from Community Policing and Bruce Mansfield, the Acting State ProjectCo-ordinator for nsDep (National Schools Drug Education Programme). The themes of good communication, being well informed and building trust in relationships were repeatedthroughout the night and put into practice with the coming together of parents, students, teachers and communityorganisations to generate open and informed discussion. Student presentations and panel input stimulated goodconversation that hopefully will continue well beyond Thursday night. Thanks must go to our Year 10 Health and Wellbeing teachers Ms Angela Green and Mr Phil Hyatt for guidingstudents in their preparations for the evening, to the panel members for bringing their experience to the forum andespecially to our Year 10s whose hard work in research and preparation and articulate, confident presentations werestunning.End of Term Tidy - Library Books and Money Owed to the OfficeThe end of each term presents a great opportunity for students to ‘get their house in order,’ in preparation for anorganised start to the next term. This week, students have been encouraged to tidy lockers and take homebelongings that are no longer needed at school. In particular the return of library books, especially those overdue, and the repayment of money owed to the College Office, are essential as we conclude this term.Students have been reminded that the issuing of Reports and College Magazines at the end of the year is dependenton the return of all College property. With this in mind, it would be a good idea to make sure any money owed tothe College Office and all books borrowed during Term Two are returned by the end of next week.Summer Uniform ChangeoverAs indicated on the College Calendar, the first day of Term Three is the commencement of the summer uniformchangeover period. From this date, students will have two weeks to make the transition to the wearing of summeruniform. It would be a good idea to locate items of summer uniform and attend to any adjustments, cleaning orrepairs that might be required in preparation for this transition. All students must be wearing full summer uniformon Monday 6th.Miss Julia O’RourkeDeputy PrincipalF R O M T H E A S S I S T A N T T O T H E P R I N C I P A L - P R I M A R YThank youSincere thanks to Miss Sarah Jones for fulfilling the role of replacement teacher in Grade 4 so effectively since thebeginning of August.
