time. Culinary thanks go to Mrs Tania Saville for coordinating the food with expertise and aplomb. To Mr MarkLoveluck we extend our appreciation for assisting with the money side of things, along with our Office Staff. At9.30 pm when everything had been tidied up and stowed and the counting was complete, we had raisedapproximately $17,772 minus expenses, all of which will be used on projects to benefit the most importantpeople in all of these proceedings – the students! This was a mighty effort.iPad Information EveningI remind you of the iPad Information Evening which takes place on Monday, 25 th March at 7.30 pm in theCollege Drama Room. Hosted by the Parents and Friends Association, this session replaces the March Parentsand Friends Meeting. The main facilitator will be Dr Simon James, IT coordinator at the College, with guestspeaker Ms Glynis Tully, Education Officer/ ICT, from the Tasmanian Catholic Education Office. This is a parent session, rather than a student plus parent session. It is important that parents and carers bringalong their daughters’ iPads so that they can have a look at some of the programmes we are using. After all, theiPad should be a public document. As we have said so many times, the device has been purchased atconsiderable expense primarily as an educational tool, not as a social medium.Your daughters should have brought home a document generated into their Asdeq document folder extendingan invitation to all parents/carers to the Information Evening. A response is requested as to the number ofadults attending; the students can convey this information to their Home Room Teachers. This will assist in oursetup for the evening.CongratulationsSome time ago Mrs Michelle Wall and Mrs Giovanna Padas were asked by ACARA (Australian CurriculumAssessment and Reporting Authority), to be part of a nation-wide writing team. Their brief was to create worksamples to be published online with the Australian Curriculum to illustrate the Standards in Grade 2Mathematics and Year 7 English respectively. Two Mathematics Units and a Unit of Year 7 Poetry are now available on the Australian Curriculum website – atestament to the expertise and creativity of Michelle and Giovanna. Congratulations to both these staff memberson their fine efforts.Relay for LifeUnder cold and wintry conditions, twenty-two Year Ten students and two staff members, Miss Angela Greenand Mrs Maureen Fasnacht participated for the first time as a Mount Carmel Team in the Cancer Council’s Relayfor Life on Saturday and Sunday last weekend. The team was joined at the Domain Athletics Centre by a number of staff and parents whose support andsupervision during the night were much appreciated. The event attracted 112 teams comprising 2400 teammembers. It is anticipated that over $320 000 will be raised overall.Thank you to the staff and students who were involved – the girls taking part were certainly fine ambassadors forthe College.Swimming TeamsTwo Swimming Carnivals this week provide an opportunity for our Secondary and Primary Swimming Teams toput their training to the test in the SATIS and STCPSSA competitions on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. The teams are to be congratulated on their commitment and their whole-hearted representation of the College.Thank you to Miss Angela Green and Mr Philip Hyatt for their organisation and to Miss Melanie Sluyters andMiss Ruby Marshall for their assistance.CondolencesWe offer sincere condolences to Miss Elizabeth Archer and her family on the death of Elizabeth’s father, MrBrian Archer. Mrs Chen is Principal of Marist Regional College in Burnie and has a longassociation with Mount Carmel, having attended the College; her brother, Markus, has also been much involvedin Catholic education. Sue tells the story of the many years her mum and dad would bake for the Mount CarmelCollege Fair after the children had gone to bed! We offer our deepest sympathy at this sad and difficult time.We wish all members of our College Community a happy and holy Easter. In the words of Joyce Rupp “It is myhope for you this Easter season that you will trust the resurrection of your spirit, believe that joy and new life willcome for you, even though it may not be there for you now. If you are one of the fortunate ones whose soulsings with happy alleluias this Easter, may you turn often to those who are still awaiting their greening and walkhopefully with them.”

Mrs Laurie WolfePrincipalFROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALCommunication Log and HomeworkAll secondary parents should have seen their daughter’s communication log which includes, a section for notesfrom home, a student movement log and most importantly a section for signing indicating that parents have seentheir daughter’s homework each week. The tool that your daughter is using can vary from my Homework, reminders, a diary or homework planner app. Whatever the tool your daughter is utilising it is important thatthis allows her to effectively manage her time, with meeting deadlines being the key! Homework timetables havebeen issued to all students and should be included on the iPad calendar function on your daughter’s iPad.Homework Timetables read in conjunction with the Homework Policy indicate the amount of time studentsshould be spending on homework for each subject, each night. An additional copy of each secondary classeshomework timetable can be downloaded from our webpage for parent reference, working in partnership withyour daughter and her teachers is vital in obtaining the best educational outcomes for your daughter. If studentsor parents have any concerns about the amount of homework being set (too much or too little), please do nothesitate to make contact with the relevant subject teachers.Easter and Term 1 HolidaysEaster includes Good Friday, Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday, this year this holiday period has beenshortened compared with recent school years due to the introduction of the four term year. This results inWednesday 3 rd , Thursday 4 th and Friday 5 th April being regular school days in 2013. Term 1 concludes on Friday,19 th April and will be followed by a two week holiday until Monday, 6 th May.2013 Winter Uniform ChangeoverWith the four term year, there is another slight change to this change over period compared to past years. Thetwo-week transition period for the wearing of Winter Uniform commences after Term 1 holidays on Monday, 6 thMay, the first day of Term 2. All students need to be in full winter uniform by Monday, 20 th May. In theintervening weeks, students are required to wear either their Winter Uniform or their Summer Uniform – notbits of both.ImmunisationsImmunisations for Year 7 (Gardisil Anti-HPV) students will be held at the College on Tuesday, 9 th April. Onlythose students who returned a consent form will participate. Please avoid appointments for these students onthis day.Interim Reports and Learning ConferencesSecondary students will receive their Interim Reports after the Easter break on Friday, 8 th April. These reportsprovide a very general indication of students’ progress to date and are accompanied by an invitation to parentsand students to participate in Learning Conferences on Tuesday, 16 th April.Learning Conference Forms will be sent home with Interim Reports and are due to be returned to HomeroomTeachers by Thursday, 11 th April. All students are to return their Learning Conference forms, regardless ofwhether learning conferences are required.Student involvement in Learning Conferences is paramount to the process leading to a successful outcome. With the involvement of students in this conversation there will be an opportunity to further develop students’responsibility for their own learning. We recognise that there are still occasions when it is appropriate forparents to communicate with teachers without students present and you are very welcome to request anextended Learning Conferences slot if you choose.Uniform MattersStudents are to wear full summer or winter uniform to and from school. Blazers and boaters are to be worn toand from school each day including on buses travelling to or from the city, unless an announcement is madeindicating otherwise. Secondary students involved in three or more College activities in one day, requiring thewearing of College Sports Uniform, may request a Uniform Exemption Card, giving them permission to weartheir College Tracksuit to and from school.A high standard of personal presentation is expected of students at all times and care should be taken to keep

uniforms in good condition. If a uniform is soiled or damaged and requires repair or cleaning, the completereverse season uniform is to be worn, not the sports uniform, eg. the summer uniform is to be worn ifthe winter uniform is being cleaned/repaired.According to the College Sun Protection Policy, for the duration of Term 1 and Term 4, a College sunhat or cap(not the College boater) is to be worn outside at recess, lunch breaks or while involved in other outdooractivities.LatenessAll secondary students are expected to arrive on time, and be prepared to commence classes at 8.35 a.m. Latearrival means students miss important class time and it creates additional work for Admin staff who recordattendance information, and teachers who may need to repeat instructions and information missed in classes. Itis, therefore, a matter of personal organisation and courtesy towards others. Over the next few weeks, StudentCo-ordinators will be monitoring lateness closely and communicating with students and parents where there is apattern of repeated late arrival.Bus ConcernsWe are very fortunate at Mount Carmel to have a number of excellent bus services that provide for safe andconvenient transport to and from school and generally we can rely on our students to behave in a safe andcourteous fashion on buses. However, from time to time students and/or parents raise concerns about bustravel to and from school. Where these concerns relate to the behaviour of Mount Carmel students on buses, you are encouraged to contact any of the Student Co-ordinators or myself and can be assured that theseconcerns will be followed up. All Mount Carmel Students sign a commitment to the Tasmanian Bus AssociationCode of Behaviour, which appears in asdeqdocs on students iPads and any behaviour on buses that does notcomply with these expectations will be addressed.Where concern is expressed about the bus service itself, you are also very welcome to contact the College. Yourconcerns may relate to safety issues such as a lack of seats available for students on buses or the inconvenienceof routes or timetables. Any issues brought to our attention at the College will be conveyed to bus operators anda satisfactory outcome will be sought. If you do have a concern of this nature I strongly recommend that youalso make direct contact with the bus service provider as the importance of the issue is emphasised when anumber of voices raise the same concerns. If you do have concerns about student bus travel to and from the College of a morning or afternoon, you arewelcome to phone me at the College or make contact via email: lyndal.tewes@mountcarmel.tas.edu.auF R O M T H E A S S I S T A N T T O T H E P R I N C I P A L – P R I M A R YMrs Lyndal TewesDeputy PrincipalEasterThe great celebration of Easter is nearly upon us. This results in Wednesday, 3 rd , Thursday, 4 th and Friday, 5 th April being regular school days. Term 1concludes on Friday, 19 th April and will be followed by a two week holiday until Monday 6 th May.iPad MeetingI very much encourage primary parents to attend the Parents and Friends Meeting next Monday night, as DrSimon James (Mount Carmel ICT Coordinator) and Ms Glynis Tully (Tasmanian Catholic Education Office) willdiscuss the introduction of iPads as an educational tool at Mount Carmel. Please come to the Drama Room at7:30 p.m. for what should be a very informative presentation.Primary Parent Teacher InterviewsParent Teacher Interviews provide an invaluable opportunity for parents and class teachers to meet and talk overyour child’s particular needs and his or her progress at this early stage of the school year. The discussion canencompass specific learning goals and strategies, as well as social and emotional issues. I encourage all of you to

I s s u e 4 , 2 1 s t M a r c h . 2 0 1 3 M o u n t C a r m e l C o l l e g eG E N E R A L N E W SMini VinniesOn Thursday, March 14 th our Student Leaders attended the Induction Mass for the St Vincent de Paulsociety. School leaders have an important role to play in the life of the school. Student leadership providesa forum for students to work collaboratively with a sense of vision and purpose and to serve their fellowpeers and the wider community. It was decided that one avenue in which our Primary Leaders can exercisetheir service to others, is through Mini Vinnies.Mini Vinnies is a group of primary school young people who get together to help those in need within theirschool and local community. This group introduces children to social justice issues, to the St Vincent dePaul Society and to living faith through action. In 2013, we aim to start a Mini Vinnies group in thePrimary school and the House Captains and Primary Leaders will be the driving force behind it.At the Mass on Thursday, the two Primary Leaders received a candle and badges for each member of theMini Vinnies group and made a pledge to uphold the aims of the society and work to promote awareness in their school and thewider community. We look forward to the exciting work that the Mini Vinnies will plan for in 2013.Miss Ida SaracinoPrimary Religious Education CoordinatorProject CompassionAll Project Compassion boxes are due to be returned to school on Friday, 22 nd March. Thank you to all families who havegenerously donated to Project Compassion during this season of Lent. As Holy week is rapidly approaching all of us are encouragedto make a concerted effort in this last week of Lent to fill our boxes in order to assist our brothers and sisters who are living inpoverty. It was interesting to hear in the news on Sunday that our newly elected Pope has spent much of his life working with thepoor in the slums and in soup kitchens handing out food and comforting those who led troubled lives. We too, can follow in PopeFrancis’ footsteps and attend to the needs of the poor and the marginalised.Featured in the last issue of the Bulletin was the story of Ditosa and how Caritas Australia helped her. In this fortnight’s Bulletinthere is a segment on Rollen and how her life was transformed with the support of Caritas Australia.Rollen lives in a small village called Kerenga in Papua New Guinea. She lives with her mother and two brothers. When she waslittle, life was hard for Rollen. She did not go to school. Instead, she looked after goats. She also helped to pull up wild cane roots sothat her family could grow food on the land. Sometimes her hands would be covered in blisters. Rollen decided that she wanted togo to school. The head teacher gave her a pencil and exercise book and let her attend primary school. But children in Papua NewGuinea have to pay for school after Year 8, and Rollen had no money.Soon after, Rollen met Caritas Australia’s partners called ‘Mercy Works’. They supported Rollen so she was able to study until Year10. After that, they helped her to train in Tourism and Hospitality. Mercy Works also showed her how to spend money carefully sothat she would have enough to last. Now Rollen has a job at a hotel. She says that nothing is impossible!By donating to Project Compassion we are making a life-changing difference to the lives of children like Rollen and the marginalisedcommunities around the world. Every little bit helps to open doors into the future.Mr Gerard McNultySecondary Religious Education CoordinatorPalm Sunday and Holy Week PrayerOn Friday 22 nd March students from Kinder- Grade 2 will re-enact the story of Palm Sunday in the Hall at 9.30 am. NAPLAN 2013The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) which is the annual assessmentfor students in Grades 3 and 5 and Years 7 and 9 is rapidly approaching. Below is the 2013 Year 7 andYear 9 timetable.NAPLAN has been an annual event for schools since 2008 and is made up of tests in the four domains ofReading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. NAPLANassesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the curriculum.NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, rather it demonstrates how individual students are progressing innumeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children. All students are expectedto participate in the tests. Students with identified needs may qualify for special provisions that reflect thesupport normally provided to them in the classroom. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued later this year. Parents can use this information tomonitor how their daughter is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish touse their daughter’s results to discuss progress with their teachers. As well as printed material, a video on the NAPLAN website explains how NAPLAN results arereported, including the individual Student Report. These resources may be useful to answer questionsabout NAPLAN. More information is available at www.naplan.edu.au. In the weeks leading up to thetests your daughters will have the opportunity to try some practice questions in their English andMathematics classes. They may even have some to do for homework. This is not “teaching for the test”but hopefully such practice may allay any nervousness at the prospect of doing the tests.
