*MEDITERRANEAN GULL Larus melanocephalus
S Adult in winter plumage at Fallin 26 Dec (RD HC). First record for area (regular
in outer Firth of Forth). Full description supplied; in summary: Seen floating
down river with Black-headed and Common Gulls, telescope views to 70 m.
White primaries conspicuous at 300 m. Slightly smaller than Common and
larger than Black-headed Gull, head and neck heavier than latter and
upperparts slightly paler grey; bill thicker, mainly bright red with paler,
yellowish tip and blackish band across gonys; tops of legs visible and dark red.
Dark streaking round eyes formed mask with white crescents above and below
eyes.
