Noted at only 2 sites in Jan (14 Lecropt on 9th) but 14 in Dec (21 Gart on 12th, 23 Cambuskenneth on 16th & 11 Callander on 18th) (CJH AT NB). F White Wagtails M.a.alba : 1 or 2 at Skinflats 4 Apr to 4 May. 1 Kinneil 18 Mar, 24 Apr & 10 Sep (GO DT DMB). C White Wagtails M.a.alba : 1 Tullibody Inch 23 Apr & 1 Blackdevonmouth 17 Sep (DMB). S 100 Killin 2 Apr (PWS). 87 BoA 7 Oct (AT). WAXWING Bombycilla garrulus S Influx in late Dec: First 5 at Stirling 27 Dec, fed on apples to 30th; 25 at Business Park 30th & 31st (IW DK AB). 4 Lecropt on 30th & 1 BoA on 31st (MVB AT). DIPPER Cinclus cinclus (B,W) Widespread song in Jan. F 8 on R.Carron, Carron-Bonnybridge 16 Jan (MA). C 28 on Devon, Alva-Dollar, in Jan (only 8 on 14 Mar); 17 in Nov; also at rivermouth (Cambus) Jan & Oct/Nov (DE GEL DAC). 1 Blackdevonmouth 6 Nov (AT). S Fair year W.Stirling (HR). WREN Troglodytes troglodytes (B,W) Under-recorded (Ed). BBS shows 71 per 10 Km in conifers, 25 on farmland, 22 in ‘Urban’ & 1 on moorland. Highest overall total since 1996, up 35% over 1999, mainly in conifers. HEDGE SPARROW Accentor modularis (B,W) Under-recorded (Ed). BBS shows 11 per 10 Km in ‘Urban’, 6 in conifers & 9 in farmland. Overall figures close to 7 year average. ROBIN Erithacus rubecula (B,W) Under-recorded (Ed). BBS shows 43 per 10 km in conifers, 16 on farmland & 10 in ‘Urban’. Overall figures up 13 % over 1999, but close to 7 year average. 1st autumn song at Airthrey 5 Aug; singing after dark in Stirling 14 Nov (CJH AT). REDSTART Phoenicurus phoenicurus (B) 1st of spring, singing at Lake of Menteith 7 May (RAB). S 38 prs Trossachs colony (36 in 1999), reared 105 Y – later broods affected by predation by Great Spotted Woodpeckers (HR). Pr with 2Y Braes of Doune 9 Jul (KD). 13 Y fledged from 2 boxes at G.Finglas scheme (DJC). WHINCHAT Saxicola rubetra (B) BBS shows 1 per 10 Km on moorland, half the 1999 frequency & a quarter the seven year average. 1st of spring 1 Thornhill 22 Apr & 3 Kinneil on 30th; Skinflats on 7 May, Flanders Moss on 12th & Invertrossachs on 13th (SS DT AB DOE). S Pr + 5Y Killin 8 Jul (PWS). STONECHAT Saxicola torquata (b,w) BBS shows 1 per 10 Km on moorland & no other records. Overall close to 7 year average. F M Skinflats 8 Oct to 3 Nov & F on 17 Dec (GO). M Kinneil 1 Oct (DT). C 2 Alloa Inches (Rhind) 28 Dec (AT). S In breeding season noted at Earl’s Hill, L.Arklet,Thornhill, Flanders Moss (pr+3Y), Doune (pr+3Y), G.Ogle (4 prs) (DT SS DP DOE). In winter/autumn at 9 further sites, mainly Trossachs and northern hills but also Carron Valley Res, Kippen Muir, Buchlyvie, Sheriffmuir. (DAC NB GO AB DMB).
WHEATEAR Oenanthe oenanthe (B) BBS shows 3 per 10 km, only on moorland; half the frequency over 1997-99 but similar to 1994/95. First dates on breeding grounds were Tillicoultry Glen 25 Mar & Balquhidder on 31st, G.Buckie 15 Apr (AT KD DT). 1 Kinneil 9 Apr, widespread after 24th; on estuary to 7 May. Autumn migrants on estuary mainly early Sep, late birds at Cambus (Greenland form) on 28 Sep & Kinneil on 30th (AT KD DT GO DMB). *RING OUZEL Turdus torquatus (b) S 1st of spring in Balquhidder, Creag McRannach 31 Mar (3 on 24 Apr) & Monachyle Glen on 9 Apr (KD DJC). M Ben Lui summit 29 Jun & 20 Jul (KD). C F Alva Glen 23 Apr (DK). BLACKBIRD Turdus merula (B,W) BBS shows 116 per 10 km in ‘Urban’ & 29 on farmland. Overall close to 1998 & 99 & the 7 year average. F 11 Wallacebank Wood 15 Jan (AS). S 10 Dunblane 3 Aug & Killin 23 Oct (NB PWS). FIELDFARE Turdus pilaris (W) Spring departure meagre, last flocks Doune 18 Apr, but 13 Blackdevonmouth 15 May (KD AT). Autumn arrival late, only Oct records were at Killin, small flocks on 23rd & many flocks on 24th. 160 Blackdevonmouth 1 Nov, 120 ->W Airthrey on 9th, 2000 Lecropt on 11th. (PWS CJH MVB DT). F S 161 Skinflats 13 Nov was only large flock (GO). 108 Blairlogie on 16 Feb & 150 Braes of Doune on 20th (CJH MVB). Only large Dec flock was 225 Braes of Doune on 5th (NB). SONG THRUSH Turdus philomelos (B,W) BBS shows 14 per 10 km in ‘Urban’, 10 in farmland & 10 in conifers. Overall frequency highest since 1996 but close to 7 year average. Few in January – 1 Airthrey, 1 Skinflats, 2 Doune. 8 L.Katrine 28 Feb represents spring arrival, but not noted Killin till 28 Mar. 7 sites, Buchlyvie to Larbert & Killin, in Dec (CJH GO AT NB PWS DAC MA). F 4 Fallin 1 Oct considered migrants (RD). REDWING Turdus iliacus (W) 1st of autumn 7 Camelon 8 Oct; 100 Kippen Muir on 21st, large night passage on 22nd at Doune, many flocks Killin on 23rd & 24th, 500 ->W Airthrey & 2500 ->NW BoA on 24th. Max later were 300 Blackdevonmouth 1 Nov & 106 Larbert on 17 Dec (MA DT DOE PWS MVB CJH). MISTLE THRUSH Turdus viscivorus (B,W) BBS shows 2 per 10 km in conifers & 1 on farmland, as 1999. Overall close to the 7 year average. 30 Braes of Doune 30 Jun, 25 Airthrey 25 Aug; otherwise only 6 sites in autumn (DT DMB et al). GRASSHOPPER WARBLER Locustella naevia (b) F C S Bird Report 2000 43 Singing at Skinflats from 22 Apr to 2 Jun (GO AB MA DT). 1 Cambus 15 Jul (CJH) 2 Flanders Moss 1 May & 1 on 9 Jun. 1 Carron Valley Res 2 Jul & 1 Cowie on 19th (DOE DP DAC DT) . SEDGE WARBLER Acrocephalus schoenobaenus (B) BBS shows highest total in 7 years, twice the average. 1st record Skinflats 24 Apr, Camelon 27th, Kinneil & Blairdrummond 30th; widespread by 7 May. Last were 1 Skinflats 29 Aug and Kinneil 10 Sep. (GO MA DT DOE et al).
