Environmental Education
Sierra Cubs Camp Expands
Throughout Texas
For the first-time in Texas,
Sierra Cubs Nature Camps, part
of the environmental education
program of the Lone Star Chapter
of the Sierra Club, were
offered this summer in both
Central and East Texas. The
camp in Austin finished its
sixth successful year and drew
in campers from as far away as
San Antonio. In Nacogdoches,
the camp was an overwhelming
success due to the communitywide
involvement and effort
from local Sierrans, businesses,
government agencies, and the
local university. [See “thank
you column” for details.]
Both camps followed a similar
pattern of guiding youth ages 6
to 10 years old through instruction,
EcoArt, and Earth Game
activities in outdoor safety,
native plants, wildlife, and
geology. Sign language symbols
and Spanish terms were also
woven into camp curriculum.
Their settings, however, were
strikingly different. Austin’s
campers cooled off under the
shady arms of 500+ old live oak
trees, and hiked alongside
creekbeds in search of fossils.
Meanwhile, Nacogdoches’
campers, discovered a protected,
fragile ecosystem resplendent
with wetlands, springs, waterfalls,
and endangered plants
right in their town’s backyard.
Each camp offered youth a
unique opportunity to explore
and connect with some of the
special places in Texas, building
their sensitivity to their natural
environment for its future
protection and preservation.
