20 Lone Star Sierran Fall 2002 State of the Sierra Club Support Projects in Texas Funded by The Sierra Club Foundation Participate in the Earth Share of Texas Workplace Giving Program Many Lone Star Sierrans have the opportunity to support the work of the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club through payroll deduction plans at work. The Sierra Club Foundation, a charitable organization, provides funds for a number of environmental projects conducted in Texas by the Lone Star Chapter. Earth Share of Texas, an umbrella group for Texas’ leading environmental and conservation groups, represents The Sierra Club foundation in workplace giving programs in this state. Most workplace giving campaigns are conducted from September through early November, so now is the time to look for Earth Share of Texas pledge cards in your workplace. Look for Earth Share of Texas in workplace giving campaign literature and on pledge cards at all state agencies; all state colleges and universities; federal agencies in most parts of Texas; Houston and Austin school districts; Austin, Dallas, El Paso and Houston municipal offices; and many private employers, including American Airlines, Compaq Computer Corporation, Dell Computer Corporation, Green Mountain Energy and Vignette. Lone Star Sierran Fall 2002 21 State of the Sierra Club Join Us October 19 & 20 for Sierra Celebration 2002 Annual Gathering for Texas Sierrans to be Held at Selah, Bamberger Ranch in the Beautiful Texas Hill Country The Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club will hold its annual gathering this year on October 19 and 20 at Selah, near Johnson City. Selah is 5,500 acres of Texas hill country that have been lovingly restored from “ one of the worst examples of abused ranchland in central Texas” to a working ranch with large areas of balanced grassland, native trees— and thus, a return to something similar to its original riparian systems. It is “…a beautiful place in the Texas Hill Country where the visitor is invited to pause and reflect on Nature”. This is the largest private project of its kind in Texas, and is a tribute to David Bamberger and his wife Margaret, who spent a fortune and half a lifetime of hands-on work to make it happen. For many of us who love nature but are challenged when even facing a back yard project with native plants and grasses, this is the ultimate challenge, answered resoundingly. Taking the ranch tour, you will be amazed and impressed at the scale and vision of this project, which still continues. Visit the wonderful man-made bat cave, and the charming “country store”, a collection of many of the tools and domestic items inherited from David’s mother, who was a major inspiration. Join us to experience and celebrate Selah and enjoy the hospitality of the Bambergers and their staff. Logistics & Schedule of Activities We will gather late Saturday morning; have lunch in the lodge and then an afternoon tour of Selah on the open air “trolley” that will include much helpful information on grassland and riparian habitat restoration. Late afternoon we will gather again at the lodge for a social hour and then eat dinner, after which there will be special guests, music and presentations. Sunday we will have breakfast and then have the option of a visit and hike (7.5 miles as well as shorter trails) at nearby Pedernales Falls State Park or a visit to Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. We will officially depart Selah after breakfast Sunday when we leave on our visit to the parks. Those not visiting the State or National Parks may relax at Selah for the morning. All meals will be provided by Selah, refreshments by the chapter, and all are included in the $59.00 per person fee for the weekend. You are encouraged to bring your own linens; if provided they are $5 per person additional. Lodging is bunkhouse style, with separate quarters for men and women. Limited tent sites will be available at the same weekend price. No pets will be allowed. Directions to Selah will be sent with your confirmation of registration.
