State of the Sierra Club
Intern Justin Murrill Lends His Enthusiasm
to the Work of the Lone Star Chapter
St. Edward’s University Student Spends His Summer
Working for the Environment
The Lone Star Chapter of
the Sierra Club was fortunate
this summer to have
the able assistance of
Justin Murrill as an undergraduate
student intern.
Justin is a senior in the
Honors Program at St.
Edward’s University in
Austin. He will graduate in
December of this year with
a Bachelors Degree in
Business Administration.
As Justin put it in a letter
to Chapter Director Ken
Kramer this past March
inquiring about an internship,
“while my degree will
be in business, my passion
has always been with the
environment.”
Infusing Passion
into the Chapter’s
Water Project
Indeed Justin’s passion
was quite evident all summer
as he tackled one task
after another while assisting
the Chapter in its work
for the Texas Living Waters
Project, a joint undertaking of
the Chapter with three other
state-level environmental organizations
to educate and mobilize
Texans on water resources
issues. Justin lent invaluable
assistance to the effort to rally
citizens in North Central Texas
and Northeast Texas in July to
demonstrate their opposition to
the building of the proposed
Marvin Nichols Reservoir [see
related story elsewhere in this
issue].
Justin also proved to be an
awesome researcher, pulling
together much of the information
that will be used in a water publication
for the general public that
will be a work product of the Living
Waters Project. In fact Justin has
become so dedicated to the water
effort that he will be spending
some volunteer time with the
Chapter in the fall to put the
finishing touches to that
document.
Looking to the Future
After he graduates in December,
Justin plans to spend several
months traveling around
the world in the spring
before returning to the
United States to begin work
on a graduate degree in
environmental management.
Over the long-term
Justin is interested in
working to bridge the gap
that sometimes exists
between the business world
and environmental protection
efforts. If anyone will
succeed in doing so, Justin
will be the one. The staff
and volunteer leaders of the
Chapter express their
sincere thanks to Justin
for a job well done and wish
him the best for the future.
Internship
Opportunities with
the Chapter
Graduate or undergraduate
students interested in
interning with the Lone
Star Chapter of the Sierra
Club should contact the
Sierra Club State Conservation
Office in Austin to discuss
possible internships during the
regular or summer semesters.
The Chapter always has openings
for students who want to make a
contribution to the work of the
Sierra Club while developing the
skills and the knowledge to become
environmentally-responsible
citizens in their years after
college. Interning with the Sierra
Club is a great opportunity, and
the Chapter appreciates the many
contributions made by interns
over the years.
