Meeting on rural roads, Arusha
The organisers said that we have to pay transport and accommodation costs and submit
receipts and later they will refund us into our bank account. Elaine explained this is
difficult for us. Elaine will try to find out if we can book a hotel on a credit basis and pay
later.
Cycle caravan
Filbert found out that colour photocopies are expensive and the black and white ones did
not come out properly, so Elaine printed a few photos on Friday. The letter to the
Minister of State was delivered already by Filbert. The other letters will be delivered
with photos - TANROADS - Filbert, Councillor Lupilya and traffic police - Sosthenes
and Guta company - Paulo.
Elaine will write the letter to British High Commission later.
Elaine typed the financial report of the caravan which Filbert prepared.
Ride Planet Earth
We planned that on 6 th December we will cycle to Kim Beach Gezaulole, we can ask the
Kali Mata ladies to cook for us and then we cycle back.
UNDP
Elaine, Filbert, Hamadi and Edgar met with Mr Kessy on Friday. He said there is a
possibility we can get funding if we write a proposal under the heading “reducing carbon
emissions by increasing the number of people cycling as a means of transport”.
We brainstormed and have the following list of activities we could do :
- Encouragement:
o Our 2010 cycle caravan
o Leaflets for people who come to work by car, and advertisements
o workplace program to encourage office workers to cycle to work and
“bike to work day”
o promotion events

- Education:
o Teaching cycle safety and promoting cycling in schools
- Infrastructure and law enforcement:
o Workshop with politicians, governmental institutions, NGOs and donors
to plan for how to make Dar es Salaam more cycle friendly
o Cooperation with municipality to have washing places for cyclists
- Administration
o Computer and English training
o Office costs, furniture, computer, other expenses
o Expenses for attending ad hoc meetings as they come up
Climate change
Mejah and Elaine attended an NGO workshop on climate change on Wednesday. Elaine
is researching more about the clean development mechanism and whether the Tanzanian
Government could access funds from it to build cycle infrastructure. Also Elaine, Filbert,
Hamadi and Edgar met with UNEP on Friday by chance.
Tanga
Elaine, Filbert, Hamadi and Edgar met with Uli Malsius on Friday. He said that Mejah
and Dominata spoke well at the workshop in Tanga. He said it is good if UWABATAN
follow up with the municipality of Tanga about the cycle lanes which they planned for
after the workshop. He also told us about a funding opportunity for NGOS working on
urban environmental issues which will start next year.
On the issue of UWABATAN registration, the Tanga NGO office said they sent the CVs
and passport photos to the Dar es Salaam NGOs office but the Dar es Salaam NGOs
office said they did not receive them. Therefore UWABATAN will send them to
UWABA so we can follow up with all the documents.
Climate change meeting Morogoro
Hussein Hamza and Idrisa have travelled to Morogoro by bicycle. They went with a
presentation to give at the meeting.
Road traffic victims remembrance day
Juma and Paulo will sleep at the venue overnight to guard equipment and Sosthenes will
be there early to help with preparations.
Fasta Cycle Messenger Cooperative
Mr Bukuku made some coorections to the constitution and Elaine will make them in the
typed version.
Election 2010
Hamadi delivered a letter to Mwananchi and Paulo delivered to Majira. We don’t have
information on the letters to be delivered by Idrisa and Hussein Hamza as they are in
Morogoro.
Meetings with Mayor and Minister

Sosthenes will follow up getting a meeting with the Mayor with Councillor Lupilya and
Filbert will follow up the letter to the Minister of Infrastructure.
Re-cycle
We decided to give up looking for a tax exemption and instead ask the guta compay to
pay transport and tax and in return we give them a percentage of the bicycles.

This issue is for Mejah.

Finances and guta
The guta driver (Ramadhani) has not paid now he owes Tsh 27,000.
Mejah has not brought caravan receipts. Mejah is owed Tsh 13,000.
Elaine spent Tsh 2,700 on developing photos and her money was returned.
We gave Sosthenes Tsh 3,000 to develop more photos to go with the cycle caravan thank
you letters.
Filbert spent Tsh 2,500 on photocopy.
Filbert now has Tsh 211,800 of UWABA money.
Bank balance is Tsh 520,392.
