Meeting on rural roads, Arusha<br />

The <strong>or</strong>ganisers said that we have to pay transp<strong>or</strong>t and accommodation costs and submit<br />

receipts and later they will refund us into our bank account. Elaine explained this is<br />

difficult f<strong>or</strong> us. Elaine will try to find out if we can book a hotel on a credit basis and pay<br />

later.<br />

Cycle caravan<br />

Filbert found out that colour photocopies are expensive and the black and white ones did<br />

not come out properly, so Elaine printed a few photos on Friday. The letter to the<br />

Minister <strong>of</strong> State <strong>wa</strong>s delivered already by Filbert. The other letters will be delivered<br />

with photos - TANROADS - Filbert, Councill<strong>or</strong> Lupilya and traffic police - Sosthenes<br />

and Guta company - Paulo.<br />

Elaine will write the letter to British High Commission later.<br />

Elaine typed the financial rep<strong>or</strong>t <strong>of</strong> the caravan which Filbert prepared.<br />

Ride Planet Earth<br />

We planned that on 6 th December we will cycle to Kim Beach Gezaulole, we can ask the<br />

Kali Mata ladies to cook f<strong>or</strong> us and then we cycle back.<br />

UNDP<br />

Elaine, Filbert, Hamadi and Edgar met with Mr Kessy on Friday. He said there is a<br />

possibility we can get funding if we write a proposal under the heading “reducing carbon<br />

emissions by increasing the number <strong>of</strong> people cycling as a means <strong>of</strong> transp<strong>or</strong>t”.<br />

We brainst<strong>or</strong>med and have the following list <strong>of</strong> activities we could do :<br />

- Encouragement:<br />

o Our 2010 cycle caravan<br />

o Leaflets f<strong>or</strong> people who come to w<strong>or</strong>k by car, and advertisements<br />

o w<strong>or</strong>kplace program to encourage <strong>of</strong>fice w<strong>or</strong>kers to cycle to w<strong>or</strong>k and<br />

“bike to w<strong>or</strong>k day”<br />

o promotion events


- Education:<br />

o Teaching cycle safety and promoting cycling in schools<br />

- Infrastructure and law enf<strong>or</strong>cement:<br />

o W<strong>or</strong>kshop with politicians, governmental institutions, NGOs and don<strong>or</strong>s<br />

to plan f<strong>or</strong> how to make Dar es Salaam m<strong>or</strong>e cycle friendly<br />

o Cooperation with municipality to have <strong>wa</strong>shing places f<strong>or</strong> cyclists<br />

- Administration<br />

o Computer and English training<br />

o Office costs, furniture, computer, other expenses<br />

o Expenses f<strong>or</strong> attending ad hoc <strong>meeting</strong>s as they come up<br />

Climate change<br />

Mejah and Elaine attended an NGO w<strong>or</strong>kshop on climate change on Wednesday. Elaine<br />

is researching m<strong>or</strong>e about the clean development mechanism and whether the Tanzanian<br />

Government could access funds from it to build cycle infrastructure. Also Elaine, Filbert,<br />

Hamadi and Edgar met with UNEP on Friday by chance.<br />

Tanga<br />

Elaine, Filbert, Hamadi and Edgar met with Uli Malsius on Friday. He said that Mejah<br />

and Dominata spoke well at the w<strong>or</strong>kshop in Tanga. He said it is good if UWABATAN<br />

follow up with the municipality <strong>of</strong> Tanga about the cycle lanes which they planned f<strong>or</strong><br />

after the w<strong>or</strong>kshop. He also told us about a funding opp<strong>or</strong>tunity f<strong>or</strong> NGOS w<strong>or</strong>king on<br />

urban environmental issues which will start next year.<br />

On the issue <strong>of</strong> UWABATAN registration, the Tanga NGO <strong>of</strong>fice said they sent the CVs<br />

and passp<strong>or</strong>t photos to the Dar es Salaam NGOs <strong>of</strong>fice but the Dar es Salaam NGOs<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice said they did not receive them. Theref<strong>or</strong>e UWABATAN will send them to<br />

UWABA so we can follow up with all the documents.<br />

Climate change <strong>meeting</strong> M<strong>or</strong>og<strong>or</strong>o<br />

Hussein Hamza and Idrisa have travelled to M<strong>or</strong>og<strong>or</strong>o by bicycle. They went with a<br />

presentation to give at the <strong>meeting</strong>.<br />

Road traffic victims remembrance day<br />

Juma and Paulo will sleep at the venue overnight to guard equipment and Sosthenes will<br />

be there early to help with preparations.<br />

Fasta Cycle Messenger Cooperative<br />

Mr Bukuku made some co<strong>or</strong>ections to the constitution and Elaine will make them in the<br />

typed version.<br />

Election 2010<br />

Hamadi delivered a letter to M<strong>wa</strong>nanchi and Paulo delivered to Majira. We don’t have<br />

inf<strong>or</strong>mation on the letters to be delivered by Idrisa and Hussein Hamza as they are in<br />

M<strong>or</strong>og<strong>or</strong>o.<br />

Meetings with May<strong>or</strong> and Minister


Sosthenes will follow up getting a <strong>meeting</strong> with the May<strong>or</strong> with Councill<strong>or</strong> Lupilya and<br />

Filbert will follow up the letter to the Minister <strong>of</strong> Infrastructure.<br />

Re-cycle<br />

We decided to give up looking f<strong>or</strong> a tax exemption and instead ask the guta compay to<br />

pay transp<strong>or</strong>t and tax and in return we give them a percentage <strong>of</strong> the bicycles.<br />

This issue is f<strong>or</strong> Mejah.<br />

Filbert is following up.<br />

Finances and guta<br />

The guta driver (Ramadhani) has not paid now he owes Tsh 27,000.<br />

Mejah has not brought caravan receipts. Mejah is owed Tsh 13,000.<br />

Elaine spent Tsh 2,700 on developing photos and her money <strong>wa</strong>s returned.<br />

We gave Sosthenes Tsh 3,000 to develop m<strong>or</strong>e photos to go with the cycle caravan thank<br />

you letters.<br />

Filbert spent Tsh 2,500 on photocopy.<br />

Filbert now has Tsh 211,800 <strong>of</strong> UWABA money.<br />

Bank balance is Tsh 520,392.
