The right
climate!
Temperature control that adjusts perfectly to suit
the weather conditions, plus a constant supply of
fresh air in the right quantity, can improve your
comfort and quality of life. During our downtime we
might view a comfortable climate as simply a nice
bonus. But in the context of everyday work or training
activities, it is absolutely crucial: from classrooms to
company control rooms, an optimum indoor climate
is more important than ever when it comes to
promoting successful learning over extended periods,
making quick and accurate decisions, and solving
complex problems.
This is where emco Klima comes in.
Winning
comfort.
Our philosophy lies in creating a climate that lives up
to the wide-ranging expectations of a world where
performance is what counts – a climate that works in
harmony with the architectural features and applications
of each individual project.
That is why we offer a wide spectrum of air conditioning
technology, from tried-and-tested standard
components to customised special solutions.
The intelligent emco MFR multi-function controller
combines these individual components to form
an efficient, smoothly functioning air conditioning
system. The intuitive interface allows you to create a
feel-good climate that precisely matches your needs.
Under floor systems
Whether the emco air conditioning concept you
choose involves swirl diffusers, floor convectors or
decentralised facade ventilation systems, the MFR
control system combines all the devices/components
into a single intelligent system.
The result is a climate that offers maximum comfort:
an efficient, intuitive system with flexible options
and customisable programming. Depending on the
emco MFR temperature difference control
application, the emco MFR can be used as a decen-
solution in a particular area. And because the emco
MFR can be connected to the building management
system in a variety of ways (e.g. BACnet), it offers
everything you need to integrate it into existing and
Flexible
integration.
Today‘s architectural concepts have to face up to a whole
host of challenges. With a view to climate protection and
resource conservation, these include using sustainable
construction methods and energy-efficient types of building
services engineering.
When creating an indoor climate, there are various options
for ensuring that energy is used sensibly: centralised or
decentralised systems, water-ducting or air-only systems,
or a combination of these.
Integrated system solutions are gaining in importance in
office and administrative buildings more than anywhere else,
because only these systems can fulfil the high requirements
surrounding comfortable, healthy and productive working
conditions, whilst also conserving energy.
As a result, AL-KO and emco have teamed up to form the
„AL-KO/EMCO Klimasysteme“ partnership, which focuses on
sensible and comprehensive planning for air conditioning
systems by coordinating control centres and rooms. The emco
MFR control system ensures optimum interaction between
the air conditioning components in the room and those in
the control area, and is also perfectly coordinated with the
AL-KO central control unit. The user benefits from intuitive
operation and a range of customisation options. That is why
we recommend getting „AL-KO EMCO Klimasysteme“ involved
right from the start of the project wherever possible.
Quick and reliable
planning.
Integral planning to VDI 3804
VDI 3804 acts as a planning aid for planners, architects and
users in creating tailored air conditioning and climate concepts
for new build and regeneration projects. The guideline
compares current example systems, looking at features such
as design, air conditioning, energy transport, structural
requirements and operation.
System A
System B
emco ventilation components from any of our product ranges
can be seamlessly integrated into these systems in a variety
of ways. The MFR multi-function controller combines separate
emco components to form a single, complete system
that offers optimum energy efficiency and user comfort, and
works in harmony with the individual requirements of the
building or room in question.
Web applications
emco offers various applications that provide a quick overview
of our range of air conditioning technology as well as
useful planning assistance: Our web apps correlate each
emco Klima component with the example systems described
in VDI 3804, also providing a picture, a brief profile and performance
data. Additionally, they demonstrate the functions
of centralised and decentralised building air conditioning
systems using air flow simulations, and use individual design
data to determine the right specifications for the most appropriate
emco Klima components, along with pricing information.
Quality makes
the difference.
Choosing products with the emco brand means
choosing exceptional quality. This applies in terms of
not only our sophisticated designs, but also our highquality
materials and painstaking workmanship.
But it is not just a question of taking our word for
it, as we have the official credentials to back up our
claims in the form of tests and certificates.
The GS ‘tested safety’ seal, CE mark and DIN EN ISO
9001 all demonstrate that emco products meet the
required standard. Naturally, the environment does
not get neglected in all of this. emco was one of the
first companies to adopt a QES management system
(Quality, Environment, Safety). As part of the certification
process, the strict guidelines in DIN EN ISO
14001 also have to be met.
We are fully aware of our responsibilities towards the
environment, from product development through to
product disposal.
Tailored
to you.
MFR control
system.
The emco MFR works according to the principle
of ‘one for all’, which means it can not only control
each individual emco device across different
product ranges, but can also control the interaction
between the various emco components, thus creating
a highly efficient air conditioning system.
The MFR concept saves time, effort and money:
the control system is easy to integrate into centralised
and decentralised air conditioning systems
alike. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities
during planning, as special solutions can
be created without requiring constant hardware
updates and interfaces with many other control
systems are available (LON, BACnet, EIB, Ethernet).
The emco MFR is operated intuitively via a control
panel with a glass interface and touch slider function.
Since its numerous functions can be programmed
individually and modified later on, the device
offers customised comfort air conditioning at its
peak.
Through the MFR, emco offers exceptional flexibility
when it comes to implementing integrated, customised
air conditioning concepts, as recommended
by VDI 3804, for example.
Air feeding
at its best.
Diffusers.
Used in conjunction with the emco MFR, emcoair
diffusers can be integrated seamlessly into their
surroundings in terms of both form and function:
their dimensions are adapted to suit the installation
system concerned and the required flow types are
created by means of presetting or motorised adjustment.
Working together with emco control technology,
the devices create a comfortable air temperature
and en-able air to flow through the room in a way
that saves energy – even in larger spaces like concert
and event halls.
With patented air control elements and systems, emco
ensures that the horizontal dispersion widths and vertical
penetration depths are sufficiently large and that
sound power levels are kept low.
emco diffusers are designed and dimensioned to offer
Valves and
controllers.
emcoair valves and controllers ensure
that air conditioning systems maintain
a consistent level of comfort and safety
whilst keeping energy consumption to
a minimum, by distributing and controlling
air volume flows precisely within the
building. The components preventing dirt
from getting into the air conditioning unit
and thus provide lasting protection.
There is no longer any need for the laborious
and costly adjustment work normally
associated with putting air feed systems
into operation.
emco offers controllers and valves in the
form of purely mechanical systems, which
automatically ensure constant flow volumes
or provide fixed resistance, as well as
fully-fledged electronic components.
More independence.
Floor convectors.
Whether required for cold air shielding, residual heat coverage, full room heating or a
booster heat function, emcotherm floor convectors ensure maximum air conditioning
comfort without compromising. As they are installed flush with the floor in front of
floor-to-ceiling window areas, they allow the space to be used according to individual
requirements and offer maximum freedom to move. The modular structure and large
number of building-specific solutions enable the devices to be integrated into architectural
specifications without difficulty.
emcotherm floor convectors are a particularly economical and environmentally friendly
solution compared with conventional systems, as they require significantly less electrical
power to transport energy. We offer a wide range of product types from standard
devices to those used solely for heating, right through to our real ‘all-rounders’ that
also offer cooling and ventilation functions.
For every
situation.
Rolling foot
grids and
linear grids.
emcotherm grids come in the form of roll-up and
load-bearing rolling foot grids or rigid linear grids,
and create the freedom to work more effectively
and enjoy leisure time. They can be used in a whole
variety of situations, from ventilation applications
in fitted kitchens, windowsills and doors, to refrigerated
display cases, right through to covers for
For individualists.
Specialist convectors.
Developing air conditioning systems for specialist tasks has always been an incentive
for us to demonstrate exactly what we can do.
Such is the case with the emcotherm EKO, for example: a mobile secondary air cooling
convector which is specifically designed to guide heat away from computers and
machines. The device is installed in closed cabinet units or incorporated into the room
architecture as a free-standing element.
Then we have the emcotherm WKQ partition convector: a heating and cooling convector
which we designed for the company Strähle, that can be integrated invisibly
into the multifunctional MTS partition and wall cabinet system in order to create a
draught-free, comfortable climate within a room.
Each air conditioning task is unique, which is why we use our experience and creativity
to develop unique solutions. Please get in touch with us to find out more.
Getting back to nature.
Phase change materials.
With its emcovent PCM products, emco offers active storage systems that are used to
control room temperature in a way that is both natural and energy-saving.
They can be used in a centralised or decentralised manner. emcovent PCM modules
contain what are known as phase change materials, which have a low melting point
of approx. 20 °C. During cool summer nights, these materials freeze with practically no
costs incurred. During warm days, they then melt, thus cooling the building.
Depending on the design, the device is discharged by means of the integrated heat exchanger
using secondary air operation, or cooled with external air by means of a direct
connection to the external facade.
We manufacture emcovent PCM modules for new buildings or renovation projects in
accordance with your planning and architectural specifications.
Comfort at the right price.
Chilled ceiling convectors.
emcocool chilled ceiling convectors come ready to install and boast all the features of
an optimised comfort air conditioning solution: highly efficient heating and cooling,
and a fresh air supply with a low sound power level and draught-free air feed.
emcocool devices are the right choice wherever the required internal cooling load
exceeds the cooling load. They are a more economical and environmentally friendly
alternative to conventional systems, as they require significantly less electrical power
to transport energy. The systems are installed flush with the ceiling or even freely suspended.
With its low installation height, the emcocool DKA isn’t just suitable for new
buildings – it’s also a great choice for retrofitting and renovation projects.
Gathering
and sharing
knowledge.
Air conditioning technology is dynamic: requirements
relating to energy efficiency, air quality, ergonomics
and resource conservation are growing all the
time. With its wide range of cutting-edge laboratory
and testing facilities, the research and development
centre we opened at our Lingen (Germany) headquarters
in 2012 has everything we need to respond
quickly and flexibly to current needs using new
developments and advancements. It also gives us
the freedom to think ahead to the future, developing
intelligent innovations designed to spur on advances
in the field of air conditioning technology.
But we aim to go even further than this.
We view the facility as a regional hub for creative exchanges
of ideas with scientific institutions, vocational
training centres and, last but not least, designers
and architects who actually use emco air conditioning
technology on a day-to-day basis.
For us, the emco research and development centre is
an incentive to consistently monitor our performance
as well as seek out improvements and innovations.
At the same time, it reflects a company philosophy
that is based on sustainability and responsibility.
Drive for the future.
The air conditioning
laboratory.
The key task for the air conditioning laboratory is to develop and enhance our products by carrying out
analyses using state-of-the-art measuring technology. One area that is gaining in importance involves
cross-product system solutions, which have to meet individual product requirements as effectively as
possible. For this reason, our ventilation and air conditioning specialists subject project parameters to
tests and computer simulations as early as the planning stage, allowing measurements to be obtained
under realistic conditions.
The air conditioning laboratory points to the future of product development: one in which we will be
able to tailor our services more quickly and accurately to increased comfort demands, create more
energy-efficient designs, and present functions more clearly. Not only that, but it will also be easier to
develop customised special solutions.
With an area of around 1400 m², the lab provides a wide range of cutting-edge laboratory and testing
facilities. These include space for recreating real-life installation situations for industrial ventilation
systems, 2 or 3-axis model offices, measuring rooms for investigating acoustic data, transparent rooms
for flow visualisations, test benches for research on Phase Change Materials (PCM), a height-adjustable
ceiling installation, and a technical-physical laboratory. A connected office wing provides a further
430 m² of usable space for a facilities such as a training room and exhibition area. At the same time,
we can use the air conditioning of this building as a practical model for developing seamless interaction
between decentralised and centralised air conditioning components as part of the ‘AL-KO/emco Klimasysteme’
sales partnership.
Each emco system innovation is the product of comprehensive testing under the true-to-life conditions
created by our air conditioning laboratory. This means we can guarantee that each system deserves the
‘emco Klimatechnik’ name.
Multi-function rooms.
The lab has 2 multi-function rooms with the dimensions of a typical office (16 m² and 25 m²). In these
rooms, we can demonstrate various ventilation and air conditioning systems (such as diffusers, fan
convectors and decentralised ventilation systems) and investigate them using measurements. We use
installations whose features can be changed to allow us to look at how warm or cold facades affect
component functions and the room climate.
Thanks to the modular design of the rooms, superior insulation used in the enclosing surfaces, and
computer-aided measured value acquisition, we are able to determine heating and cooling power data
under realistic operating conditions.
With a versatile range of installation and supply options available, we can use the laboratory to investigate
and optimise all kinds of system combinations involving water-ducting and air-ducting components
working together (e.g. centralised ventilation + chilled ceiling or decentralised ventilation + fan
convectors). In the process, we can take into account aspects such as customer specifications relating
to operation, use and arrangement of the rooms. Using high-quality measuring technology, we can also
take measurements to prove that everything is functioning correctly and that we are meeting thermal
comfort requirements in a room.
Experience
the principles
of air directing.
In the demonstration room, we give visitors to the
R&D centre an insight into how various room ventilation
and air conditioning products work. Using
various installations, we provide clear explanations
of the basic principles of air directing (e.g. mixed ventilation,
source ventilation and mixed-source ventilation).
Visitors can observe the distribution and flow
of the air (which is made visible using smoke) in the
room through the large two-sided glass facade. As a
result, it is possible to compare different ventilation
principles and illustrate specific functional aspects of
individual products in practice.
Pressure loss
and flow volume.
The flow volume test bench supplies characteristic
curves for decentralised ventilation devices on the
basis of the VDMA guideline 24390. It can calculate
flow volume and pressure loss curves in a measuring
range between 5 m³/h and 2000 m³/h for active and
passive devices and components. The connected
equalising fans compensate for the measuring technology
that is installed and help simulate weatherrelated
overpressure and underpressure in the -500
to +1000 Pa range. This also makes it possible to not
only measure the air volume flow achieved in free
intake or discharge, but also determine characteristic
curves for overpressure or underpressure.
54 55

Applied PCM research.
At the PCM test bench in the air conditioning laboratory, investigations are carried out into the use of
phase change materials (PCM) as latent heat storage facilities in central air conditioning units.
This is part of a research project in cooperation with engineering firm AGN, University of Applied Sciences
Münster, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). Due to the enthalpy of fusion
released during the changes between solid and liquid phases at a temperature of approx. 22 °C, PCM
are suitable for storing existing energy resources (e.g. underground storage facilities, heat lost from IT
systems, etc.) for use in air conditioning applications (heating, cooling).
The system and measuring technology available enables air statuses in various summer and winter
situations to be simulated, for the purpose of investigating the freezing and thawing behaviour of PCM
storage in practice. The aim is to optimise phase change materials for use in centralised and decentralised
air conditioning systems.
Acoustics
measurements.
The acoustics lab provides us with the noise emission
values for active and passive ventilation and air
conditioning components. The acoustics test bench
consists of a send and receive room in accordance
with DIN EN ISO 140. To prevent structure-borne noise
from the surrounding area penetrating this room,
the foundations and enclosing surfaces of the test
bench are detached from the rest of the R&D centre’s
building structure. In the diffuse sound field of the
send room, we determine the sound power levels on
the basis of DIN EN ISO 3741. As well as measuring
the noise emissions of active devices, such as floor
convectors or decentralised ventilation devices, we
can also determine the flow noise of diffusers for
comfort and industrial areas. The dividing wall between
the send and receive rooms contains openings
for installing test objects, so that we can determine
various building acoustic characteristics such as the
sound insulation level and the standard sound level
difference for decentralised ventilation units and
overflow elements.
Not only is the measuring technology suitable for
stationary use in a laboratory, but it can also be
moved to other locations – for on-site acceptance
tests or fault analysis, for example.
58
59

Room flow analyses
for industrial applications.
In a 200 m² area of the R&D centre, we analyse ventilation components designed for industrial and
events halls. The 12 m ceiling height allows us to install and operate the components under realistic
installation conditions. For example, this means we can create a precise replica of flow behaviour during
cooling operation or penetration depth during heating operation, for new developments and project
applications. The range of installation options available also allows us to investigate the impact of
several diffusers operating together. The tower is supplied with up to conditioned air at up to
10,000 m³/h via the climate simulation system.
Constructing prototypes
and test benches.
The mechanical workshop in the air conditioning laboratory allows us to manufacture and install prototypes
independently as part of developing new products. The metal and electrical workshop areas allow
simple test models, test benches and product applications to be created.
