Summer annual grasses, such as forage sorghums and pearlmillet, are used extensively for
supplemental pastures and feed for dairy cows to maintain high levels of milk production during the dry and
hot summer months. Dr. Fribourg was one of the first investigators to study the management required for
these plants to grow back vigorously after cutting or grazing, and to determine that high stubbles were
necessary for some, but not for all, cultivars. His research on these plants is well documented in the
scientific literature and in popular articles, and he is the author of the chapter on these plants in three
editions of the most-used textbook on forage crops.
Prior to Dr. Fribourg coming to Tennessee, bermudagrass was considered a weed. In fact, it covers
an estimated 350,000 ha (750,000 acres) or more in the state. He has determined ways of using this
warm-season plant in a useful and economical way for beef production. His research showed how to
produce up to 12 tons of hay annually per hectare (12 ton/acre) with Midland bermudagrass when only 3 to
4 tons can be produced with common bermudagrass. He has investigated ways to manage pastures of
Midland and common bermudagrasses to produce over 450 kg per ha (500 lb/acre) per year liveweight beef
gains, about twice what producers in the 1950s. He pioneered in finding out how to manage bermudagrass
pastures to introduce and maintain a cool-season grass, tall fescue, in the sod, thereby increasing the
normal grazing season of five months to almost ten months. He led in the successful effort to find means to
maintain legumes in bermudagrass pastures.
Dr. Fribourg's name is now associated with the management of Midland bermudagrass. Although
most of the initial research with this crop in Tennessee was done by him alone, much of the later research
involving cattle was conducted in collaboration with animal scientists and agricultural economists. Dr.
Fribourg led such team research, where interpersonal and interdepartmental relations are sometimes
delicate and require tact and diplomacy.
Dr. Fribourg recognized early in his career that crop plants do not live in a vacuum, but rather that
their life and performance for human use depend on many inter-relationships. He carried out much
macro- and microclimatic work, and published in this area. He was the first to verify the validity of a
precipitation model, derived in the Midwest, for both theoretical soundness and practical use in the
Southeast. His publications in probability occurrences of climatic parameters for Tennessee are useful not
only to agriculturists of all kinds, but also to engineers, industrialists, architects and planners, and real estate
and tourism industries.
Soil characteristics and properties influence greatly crop plant performance. Dr. Fribourg is one of the
few crop scientists who has worked with soil scientists to help characterize the potential value of different
soils on the landscape as these affect forage crops. With a forester, he compared the value of forage crops
and trees for use on soils marginal for crop production.
There are over 1.6 million hectares (3.5 million acres) of tall fescue in Tennessee, a tenth of the US
area in that forage, used to graze the 2 million beef cattle in the state. Research in improving the usefulness
of this pasture species lagged for many years, because tools were not available for repeatedly identifying
negative quality factors. Dr. Fribourg was instrumental in alerting the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment
Station to the tall fescue fungal endophyte problem as soon as reports from other states indicated that
Neotyphodium coenophialum was a probable causative agent. As a result, Tennessee was able to create
new research programs in this area starting in the late 1970s and is now in the forefront of the studies on
this problem and related aspects of attempts to circumvent the low quality of infested tall fescue pastures.
He was senior editor of American Society of Agronomy 2009 Monograph 53 Tall Fescue for the Twenty-First
Century and its web companion publication.
Renovation with legumes is one of the best ways to improve an endophyte infested tall fescue
pasture. Dr. Fribourg pioneered in determining that insects were detrimental to clover stands and that some
chemicals could help in the establishment of clover in tall fescue pastures. Research on tall fescue
renovation initiated in Tennessee was emulated in other states and is the basic underpinning of extensive
agricultural extension programs in Tennessee and adjoining states.
Resume, Henry A. Fribourg, February 2013
Ever since the advent of computers on the University of Tennessee campus in the late 1960s, Dr.
Fribourg was a leader in their use and generously contributed his knowledge by publishing well-documented
programs for teaching and research. He pioneered in the joint use of statistics and computers to help explain
the effect of concomitant variates on crop and livestock characteristics of value to agriculturists and
scientists. He was the first to publish on the use of factor analysis in agronomic research and to show its
usefulness, in conjunction with multiple regression techniques, for developing models describing crop plant
and beef cattle responses.
His research on the influence of stage of development of plants at harvest for silage production is
basic to the recommendations used throughout the state for both beef and dairy cattle. His contributions in
this area were recognized when he was invited to participate in an American Society of Agronomy
symposium on that subject.
During the 1990s, Dr. Fribourg continued working on the forward and exciting fringes of agronomic
research. At his retirement in 2001, this research promised to lead to 50 to 100 percent greater cattle gains
from tall fescue pastures, to improved reproductive competence in cows, and to elucidate interactions among
forage and grazing systems, environment, and beef cattle genotypes. He was leader or co-leader in research
projects dealing with the ecology of crops in forage management systems, the utilization of endophyte infested
and endophyte free tall fescue in forage systems for beef cattle and equines, the determination of causative
agents for tall fescue toxicosis, and the quantification of methane exhalations by ruminants, in cooperation
with colleagues in Animal Science, Entomology and Plant Pathology, and Veterinary Medicine. Under these
projects, seven grazing experiments and several agronomic experiments were conducted.
After his retirement, Dr. Fribourg maintained his activities in these projects on part-time appointment,
pending the completion of several manuscripts. Topics under investigation included determination of the
effects of management and genotypes on establishment and maintenance of endophyte free tall fescue;
quantification of the effects of the presence of Neotyphodium coenophialum on pasture productivity and quality
for steers, calves and beef cows; interactions among environments, beef animal genotypes, fall & winter
calving seasons, and forage-animal management systems; development of management systems for
maintaining ecological balance of mixtures of tall fescue, bermudagrass, and legumes in pastures; refinements
in data collecting and analysis techniques for handling concomitant variables that affect forage plant
performance and utilization; and cooperation with animal scientists to measure animal responses to different
forage systems and the effect of the fungal endophyte on nutrient absorption and utilization by ruminants. With
a former student at another institution, he edited the first online monograph in agronomy, the Tall Fescue On
Line Monograph (TFOLM), gathering over fifty authors and colleagues worldwide for this 3-year effort. In 2004
through 2009, he was senior co-editor of Agronomy Monograph 53, Tall Fescue for the Twenty-first Century,
and of its online version. In 2011, he was co-editor and one of the 27 contributing authors of Country
Pasture/Forage Resources Profile for the United States of America in the online book published by the Food
and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations..
Lastly, Dr. Fribourg was not content to do research only. He willingly shared his knowledge and
experiences with students and the general public and internationally. He supervised 12 doctoral student
dissertations, 23 master’s theses, and was a member of 46 other graduate student committees. He accepted
and carried out successfully a number of foreign teaching and program evaluations in southwest Asia, Latin
America and Africa. In retirement, Henry continued his avocation of family genealogist, published his first
autobiographical memoir I Gave You Life Twice and a greatly expanded revision as the Kindle e-book
Escape to Freedom, sorted through his photograph, colored slide and stamp extensive collections, and
continued his exploration of the world.
