Al Noor Majlis Atfalul Ahmadiyya Inner Park Islam Serving Humanity Islam teaches us to sacrifice money and food for others that are less fortunate than us. Giving charity or Zakat helps people that are affected by dangerous earthquakes, floods or other natural disasters. It helps homeless people and injured people. Sadaqah or charity is the money you give away for a good cause. Our Jama‟at raises lots of money because we all pay towards charity. We raised money for lots of people in bad situations. When Haiti was affected by a huge earthquake, we raised a lot of money to help the people of Haiti. We also sent experienced doctors to Haiti to help the injured. Zakat is one of the things that are required for every Muslim. Zakat is the second act of worship in Islam. It means cleansing of property and increase of goods. The annual rate of Zakat is 2 ½% paid on unused cash and property gold, silver, or cattle beyond minimum. It goes to poor places near that area. Islam teaches us to help others. In Islam, there is Zakat which means charity. One way to help others in Islam is to give them food and other things in life. For example, Hadrat Umar Farūq (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the second Khalifa of Islam, used to go outside in disguise to help people. Once he saw a woman‟s children crying. Hadrat Umar Farūq (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the woman why her children were crying. The woman responded, “My children have not eaten anything in the past two days.” The next day, Hadrat Umar Farūq (may Allah be pleased with him) brought all sorts of food to the woman. Islam also says that 2.5% of your wealth should be used to help others. Some of the money is used to build schools and hospitals in poor countries to help those who cannot see a doctor or go to school. Some is used on orphans and people who are in need. By helping others, Islam shows us that we should love everyone and help them when they cannot help themselves. Allah states in the Holy Qur‟an “Take alms out of their wealth, so that thou mayest cleanse and purify them thereby…” (9:103) Also, “They ask thee what they shall spend. Say: “Whatever of good and abundant wealth you spend should be for parents and near relatives and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer.‟ And whatever good you do, surely Allah knows it perfectly well.” 2:216. Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) added, “Your charity is certainly misplaced if you have a near relative to deserve it.” And, “Giving charity to the poor hath the reward of one charity; but that given to kindred hath two rewards; one the reward of charity, the other, the reward of helping relations.” A good word is better than Sadaqah: With this Hadith you will understand better: Al-kalimatut-tayyibatu sa -daqatun. Translation: A word of goodness is an act of Charity. Explanation: If you tell someone about an act of righteousness and encourage him to do so, then if he preforms that good deed, you too will share an equal reward. So, saying something good to someone and for him to act upon it is like preforming a good act by yourself. All in all charity is very important to humanity. Al Noor Newsletter 8
