Sockeyes have shown lack
of drive since Christmas
BY MALCOLM LEGG
S.S.I. Sea Products Ltd. 1; Port
Alberni, 1.
As the soccer season has wound
down so have the flair and abilities
of the Sockeyes, easily exemplified
by the girls' 1-1 saw-off with Port
Alberni.
Prior to Christmas the Sockeyes
were almost invincible with their
only loss coming at the hands of the
highly tooted University of Victoria
squad. The Sockeyes combined an
- excellent attitude, good practices,
hard work and an excellently
executed system of play in showing
a class of soccer rarely seen in
Victoria.
But since the long lay-off over
Christmas the Sockeyes have faltered
badly, not only in their record
(four wins, two losses and two ties)
but also in their attitude and style
of play.
The inconsistency of their play
is reflective of poor practice attendance,
poor game attendance and a
lack of drive, something the girls
excelled in prior to Christmas.
ONLY 11 PLAYERS
Last weekend's game brought
out many of these points as the
Sockeyes travelled to Port Alberni.
The team could only muster 11
players off a roster of 18 for the
game, plus one newcomer to the
team for a total of 12 players.
The local girls played well
enough to gain the tie and actually
held the lead most of the way on a
goal from Shauneen Spence. That
one goal should have held up but
the team tired from 80 minutes of
soccer, with no bench strength,
and allowed a latei goal to create
the tie.
Gone are the Sockeyes' consistency
and their winning ways, but
most disturbing is the loss of their
style of play. The Sockeyes have
always been renowned for their
excellent passing style and strong
positional soccer. Somehow these
have become something of the past
as the team has begun to play the
long ball and is content to rely on
individual runs instead of teamwork.
LACK OF PLAYERS
But, once again, a lot of this is
due to lack of player strength
causing line-up shuffles.
It has been a disappointing
spring for the manager and coach
of the team as they have tried to
rekindle the spirit and style of the
78 Sockeyes.
Even so, there have been some
bright spots: Janice Hull's solid
play in goal; the steady play of the
Sockeyes' defensive corps; the
sparkling play of Shauneen Spence
in offence; the rapid improvement
of youngsters Lynn Spittle and
Geraldine Hagan and newcomer
Brenda Akerman; and especially
DOWN
THE
GUTTER
with KEN COLLINS
Our men's team did themselves
proud in the B.P. A. roll-offs held in
Duncan on Sunday. They placed
second, just a mere 26 pins behind
the winning team. Sorry to say that
our ladies' team did not fair so
well. Still, there's always next
year. Here are the better scores of
the week: Danny Bedford, 899; Leo
Toutant, 775; Ken Collins, 752;
Terry Jenkins, 767; Mike. Kelly,
732; Alf Can, 738; Deanna Marleau
709; Connie Kelly, 736; and
Rick Paton, 731.
We had 300 games from Ellen
Carter, 309; Ken Collins, 316;
Terry Jenkins, 312; Dan Bedford,
304-324; and Connie Kelly, 316.
The bowlers of the week were,
for the ladies, Connie Kelly, and
for the men it was Dan Bedford.
With the roll-offs coming up in
the various leagues here are a few
pointers for you to remember. They
can only help to improve your
game.
(1) Always concentrate don't
daydream.
(2) Hold the ball on the fingertips
don't cup it in the palm of
the hand.
(3) Slow and easy does h
don't rush your approach.
(4) Smooth out your delivery....
don't be jerky.
(5) Use the pendulum swing
don't exaggerate the backswing.
(6) Keep the arm close to the
body....don't sidearm your delivery.
(7) Deliver the ball beyond the
foul-line and follow through
don't release it too soon.
(8) Toes should point directly at
your target don't finish sideways
at the foul-line.
Good luck to one and all in your
roll-offs.
GOLFING
with Pat Doherty
Herewith the report on the outcome
of the Salt Spring Golf and
Country Club's winter bridge tournament.
Tournament chairman
Audrey Allan reports another very
successful and highly enjoyable
winter schedule has been completed
with 34 teams playingforthe
club's Alice Hammett Bridge
Trophy. This bridge tournament is
held each winter, and benefits the
ladies' section Improvement Fund
for the Golf Club to the tune of over
$400 annually, for which the club is
eternally grateful.
This year's winner is the Phyllis
Henderson and Janet Saunders
team with runners-up the team of
Helen Shandro and Margaret
Mayo. The highest score for grand
slams was made by the team of
Helen Insley and Flo Stewart, while
the best score for small slams went
to the team of Mabel Moore and
Audrey Allan.
At the wind-up coffee party held
at the club on Wednesday. April 4,
Charlotte Cooper, the women's
team captain, presented the club's
trophy, while Phyllis Henderson,
last year's tournament chairman,
presented the other prizes.
Those presiding at the coffee
table were the two lady members on
the Golf Club board, Cass Black
and Irene Hawksworth, and this
year's winning team of Phyllis
Henderson and Janet Saunders.
OVER 60 ENTRANTS
The golf end of our operation is
stirring into life and as usual it is the
ladies who are getting the ball rolling
down the fairway. On their
opening day kick off tournament
on April 3, they have over 60
entrants on what promises to be a
real fun day. The 18 and the 9-hole
ladies are involved in a mini tournament
that will satisfy everyone.
There are prizes for the closest to
the hole, longest drive, low gross,
low net, loan of a car for a year, you
name it, you've got it.
One only has to look at the fixture
card for the year and compare
the number of ladies' events to
men's events to realize who are the
swingers and shakers and movers
around this club.
The men have started play ing in a
nine-hole golf club home and home
tournament, the men from Prospect
Lake have been to Salt Spring,
and this week the men from Salt
Spring travel to Ardmore.
The annual general meeting was
held on Thursday and after the
usual meeting business, a motion
wa^put to the members that they
should entertain the idea of a
curling rink being erected on club
property.
NEW MANAGEMENT
Those who have been around the
club will know that the coffee shop
has been reopened under new management.
Those delicious aromas
that waft down cannot fail but to
get your taste buds anticipating
something extraordinary. The difference
between this and going up
to a closed coffee shop and mixing
your own instant coffee is as night is
to day. The lady responsible for
these tantalizing aromas is Helga,
who has all sorts of wonderful tasty
dishes for your pleasure, and if you
get lucky you may be there on the
day she has the Black Forest cake.
A new innovation is being tried
out by Helga and that is Saturday
dinners at the club. The first one is
planned for April 7. The menu is
tossed salad, Cordon Bleu, red cabbage,
baked potato with sour cream
and chives, apple pie, coffee or tea,
and the price for all this is only $5.
At that price you can hardly
afford to stay home and eat. Reservations
can be made for the dinner
at either the Pro shop or the coffee
shop. A happy hour will precede the
dinner for those who wish to
partake.
The golf course is in probably the
best shape it will be in all year, and
we are fortunate indeed to have Bud
as greenskeeper.
Malcolm Robertson was the successful
candidate for the position of
club manager, and this cannot help
but be a plus to the operation of the
club where his knowledge of golf
rules "and regulations cannot but
help tyro club captains.
We hope that everyone will participate
in every club competition
for which they are eligible, and we
wish you all the very best golf season,
and this may be just the year
when you get it all together, and 1
hope to be around when you score
your first Hole in One.
