<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>EU</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>provisi<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>social</strong> <strong>security</strong> coordinati<strong>on</strong> apply to nati<strong>on</strong>al legislati<strong>on</strong> ( 1 ) <strong>on</strong>:<br />

This means that you can always have recourse to the coordinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>provisi<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> when they<br />
are necessary for your entitlement to <strong>on</strong>e of these benefits.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se <str<strong>on</strong>g>provisi<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> do not apply, however, to the following areas:<br />
➥➥<br />
<strong>social</strong> and medical assistance: these are benefits which are normally means-tested<br />
and not linked to any of the categories menti<strong>on</strong>ed above;<br />
➥➥ benefits granted to victims of war and military acti<strong>on</strong>s or their c<strong>on</strong>sequences, to<br />
victims of crime, assassinati<strong>on</strong> or terrorist acts, to victims of damages occasi<strong>on</strong>ed<br />
by agents of the state in the course of their duties, or to victims who have suffered a<br />
disadvantage for political or religious reas<strong>on</strong>s or for reas<strong>on</strong>s of descent.<br />
( 1 ) Regulati<strong>on</strong> (EC) No 883/2004 Article 1(l) specifies that ‘ “legislati<strong>on</strong>” means, in respect of each member<br />
state, laws, regulati<strong>on</strong>s and other statutory <str<strong>on</strong>g>provisi<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> and all other implementing measures’ related to<br />
the <strong>social</strong> <strong>security</strong> branches listed in this Secti<strong>on</strong> 5.<br />
