HOMER HIGBEE INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AWARD
Erika K. Cwiek
Erika K. Cwiek is a senior at MSU majoring in psychology. She has made
contributions to the development of international awareness on campus. During her
first year at MSU she was a member of the Air Force ROTC, where she developed
leadership training and emphasized world history and the impact of the American
Government on the world.
In 2004 she was one of the first students to participate in the Study Abroad program
at the University of Applied Sciences in Lueneburg, Germany. When she returned,
she took advantage of every opportunity to speak to Michigan State students about
the incredible impact this experience had on her life.
The following fall semester she became a volunteer student leader for the
International Student Orientation program. After the orientation she has worked
hard to network among international students to increase communication,
understanding, and cooperation. She has made it a point to socialize with
internationals and provide the same support she received during her time abroad by
answering questions, explaining customs and befriending a variety of people from
many countries. She was honored when chosen as a judge for the Annual
International Student Talent Show.
To continue her goal to help students became more aware, she serves on the MSU
International Student Association (ISA) Vision Committee with the hope to impact
policies that affect all students and to establish a new voice for future international
students.
