RALPH H. SMUCKLER AWARD FOR ADVANCING INTERNATIONAL<br />

STUDIES AND PROGRAMS AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY<br />

Mary P. <strong>And</strong>rews<br />

Dr. Mary P. <strong>And</strong>rews epitomizes distinguished achievement in the promotion<br />

of international activities. She has more than 25 years of experience as an<br />

internationalist, researcher and program evaluator. Her international interests<br />

include extension program development and evaluation, women and families in<br />

development, and integrated farming and rural development approaches. After<br />

serving in the Peace Corps in India, she earned her doctorate in Family Ecology,<br />

College of Human Ecology, where she later served as the Associate Dean for<br />

Extension, Research, and <strong>International</strong> <strong>Program</strong>s. She is currently Director<br />

Emeritus of <strong>International</strong> Extension <strong>Program</strong>s for MSU Extension (MSUE) and<br />

Coordinator of the National Initiative to <strong>International</strong>ize Extension. While<br />

administering program planning and evaluation services for MSUE she helped<br />

create the renowned <strong>International</strong> Extension Training <strong>Program</strong>. Cited for her<br />

leadership in internationalizing extension programs nationally, Dr. <strong>And</strong>rews has<br />

been a team leader for <strong>International</strong> Extension Training Field Work in Mexico,<br />

Dominican Republic, Belize, Jamaica, Ukraine, India, Thailand, and Bolivia.<br />

Dr. <strong>And</strong>rews has served as consultant to projects and organizations in Latin<br />

America, Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia. She has also served as consultant and<br />

trainer to the World Bank National Agriculture Technology Project and to a United<br />

Nations Development /Food and Agriculture Organization project, both in India. Dr.<br />

<strong>And</strong>rews developed and has taught an MSU study abroad program in India and<br />

Global Futures: 21 st Century Lifestyles at MSU for students from India.<br />

Dr. <strong>And</strong>rews has served as a board member of Christian Children’s Fund, an<br />

international child development organization, and Tiller’s <strong>International</strong>; a member of<br />

<strong>International</strong> Home Economics Services, a voluntary organization of professionals<br />

sharing skills with colleagues in developing countries, and <strong>Michigan</strong> Partners, an<br />

organization promoting collaboration between U.S. and Latin American citizens. She<br />

is president of the <strong>International</strong> Federation for Home Economics-U.S., 2004-2008,<br />

and past chair of the <strong>International</strong> Division of the American Association of Family<br />

and Consumer Science.<br />

Dr. Mary <strong>And</strong>rews is a dedicated leader, enthusiastic supporter, and tireless<br />

defender of sound international programs that range across formal research,<br />

teaching and service outreach to informal personal relationships with scholars<br />

globally. She is richly deserving of the Ralph H. Smuckler Award.<br />
