RALPH H. SMUCKLER AWARD FOR ADVANCING INTERNATIONAL
STUDIES AND PROGRAMS AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Mary P. Andrews
Dr. Mary P. Andrews epitomizes distinguished achievement in the promotion
of international activities. She has more than 25 years of experience as an
internationalist, researcher and program evaluator. Her international interests
include extension program development and evaluation, women and families in
development, and integrated farming and rural development approaches. After
serving in the Peace Corps in India, she earned her doctorate in Family Ecology,
College of Human Ecology, where she later served as the Associate Dean for
Extension, Research, and International Programs. She is currently Director
Emeritus of International Extension Programs for MSU Extension (MSUE) and
Coordinator of the National Initiative to Internationalize Extension. While
administering program planning and evaluation services for MSUE she helped
create the renowned International Extension Training Program. Cited for her
leadership in internationalizing extension programs nationally, Dr. Andrews has
been a team leader for International Extension Training Field Work in Mexico,
Dominican Republic, Belize, Jamaica, Ukraine, India, Thailand, and Bolivia.
Dr. Andrews has served as consultant to projects and organizations in Latin
America, Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia. She has also served as consultant and
trainer to the World Bank National Agriculture Technology Project and to a United
Nations Development /Food and Agriculture Organization project, both in India. Dr.
Andrews developed and has taught an MSU study abroad program in India and
Global Futures: 21 st Century Lifestyles at MSU for students from India.
Dr. Andrews has served as a board member of Christian Children’s Fund, an
international child development organization, and Tiller’s International; a member of
International Home Economics Services, a voluntary organization of professionals
sharing skills with colleagues in developing countries, and Michigan Partners, an
organization promoting collaboration between U.S. and Latin American citizens. She
is president of the International Federation for Home Economics-U.S., 2004-2008,
and past chair of the International Division of the American Association of Family
and Consumer Science.
Dr. Mary Andrews is a dedicated leader, enthusiastic supporter, and tireless
defender of sound international programs that range across formal research,
teaching and service outreach to informal personal relationships with scholars
globally. She is richly deserving of the Ralph H. Smuckler Award.
