Capturing Your
Attention
by Rhonda Hufty • Director of Public Relations
Every four years the
Olympics parade before
us the best the world has
to offer in the arena of
athletics and physical
performance. The media
concentrate their efforts
on a select few athletes
in each sport that they
consider the “odds-on
favorite” for winning the
gold medal. And every
four years we are amazed
as we watch that unknown
athlete defy all the odds
and emerge as the surprise
winner. It’s always interesting to see how the spotlight then
turns to this underexposed, unfamiliar individual who has
captured our attention and caused us to take a second look.
Achievement will do that.
Success attracts attention. Accomplishments give us reason
to look differently at an individual or organization. Maybe
we are unaware, or maybe the spotlight has been focused
on the “odds-on favorite,” but achievement will make us
take notice.
Accolades and awards are nice; however, they are extra
special when the achievement is the result of goals
set, strategies planned, and steps implemented. The
high standards and ambitious goals that are set by the
trustees, administration, faculty, and staff at HLG are often
underexposed or generally thought to be “business as
usual.” Yet when these goals are met or surpassed, we
attract the attention of award-giving entities. We capture
the attention and cause others to look at HLG differently.
As you read the pages of this issue of Reflections, your
attention is sure to be captured by our academic, athletic,
and mission program achievements. You will take notice of
personnel accomplishments and alumni happenings, and I
know you will understand why a lot of people are taking a
second look.
HLG GEARS UP
FOR A NEW SEMESTER
Campus News
Hannibal-LaGrange College welcomed students back to campus August 23. Dr. and Mrs. Woodrow Burt, the president and first lady of
HLG, stood at the entrance of the campus and greeted first time students and parents as they drove onto campus. Then the Swarm Squad,
a group of 50-60 upperclassmen, helped new students move into their dorm rooms from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. “This is the third year to
provide this service for our new incoming students,” said Dr. Tom Hufty, vice president for collegiate affairs. “They provide a lot of energy
for move-in day both physically and emotionally. The Swarm Squad welcomes the new students and make parents feel right at home while
unloading their cars and carrying everything to the rooms for them. Students will ‘swarm’ each car with a goal of unloading all contents
within two minutes,” added Hufty. “Always smiling, always encouraging, always making people feel welcome to HLG . . . that’s what the
Swarm Squad is all about.”
After getting settled into their dorm rooms, the new students as well as the HLG community participated in the traditional Walk of Honor.
Faculty, staff, upperclassmen, alumni, and parents lined the walkway from the Roland Fine Arts Center to the Burt Administration Building.
New students walked single file as they passed parents and HLG students and personnel cheering and encouraging each student on their
new journey. The new students passed through the HLG arch where President Burt welcomed them with a handshake. Students then gathered
around the Old Dutch Elm tree, nicknamed the “Trinity Tree,” located between the library and administration building, for a final word
of encouragement, a song, and a prayer of dedication.
The exciting events during welcome week gave the new freshmen something to smile about. The events included midnight movies, HLG
Fest, an ice cream social, midnight party at the campus coffee house Common Grounds, Hollywood Squares game show, Hunting Hannibal
Scavenger Hunt, St. Louis Cardinals game, worship services, and a job fair. The welcome week concert was led by HLG student Andy Rhea
on August 29. “I am always excited about Welcome Week,” said Randy Shepard, director of student activities. “I love students, and going to
the events and seeing them having a good time is so much fun for me!”
The HLG maintenance and housekeeping departments, resident directors, and community volunteers worked diligently to complete
many renovation projects around campus before the students arrived. The Page Dining Room in the Partee Center underwent a major renovation
project including carpet, paint, new tables and chairs, and audio/visual equipment. “With its new look and new technology it will
be an attractive meeting place,” said Sue Booth, director of facilities and interiors. Several dorms and residential living facilities received
general repairs and a fresh coat of paint.

In the spring of 2007, an evaluation team from
the Higher Learning Commission of the North
Central Association of Colleges and Schools
completed a thorough study and evaluation of
the request by HLG to offer a Master of Science
in Education degree (M.S.E.). Upon completion
of their visit and review, the team made a positive
recommendation, and on July 11, 2007, the
Commission acted to grant accreditation for the
M.S.E. degree.
The Master of Science in Education (M.S.E.)
degree is designed to provide a program for
professional growth for elementary and secondary
teachers holding current teacher certification.
Hannibal-LaGrange has worked in cooperation
with Southwest Baptist University (SBU) to offer a
graduate program in education since 1989. This
partnership program will now be replaced by the
master’s program offered by HLG.
“Adding the master’s degree moves HLG into a
higher tier,” said Dr. Woodrow Burt,
HLG President. “We now
can serve the graduate
education needs of
the community
as well as the
associate and
baccalaureate
needs. We are
pleased that the
Higher Learning
Commission
has approved
this new degree
level and are excited
about the potential it
holds for all the students
who attend HLG.”
The accelerated format of the M.S.E.
degree program has been an attractive component
of the program. The M.S.E. program is designed
for classroom teachers. Classes meet one evening
per week, and are scheduled for either eight
weeks or the full semester during the school year
with block classes offered each summer. There are
two tracks from which to choose: teaching and
learning emphasis or literacy emphasis.
The teaching and learning emphasis (30
semester hours) focuses on effective curricular/
instructional planning and assessment to enhance
student learning. It is intended for those who
have early childhood, elementary, or secondary
teacher certification and want to study principles
of effective instruction.
The literacy emphasis (30 semester hours) is
geared toward the research-based components
of effective literacy instruction and assessment
(phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary,
fluency, comprehension, and writing). This track
is intended for those who have early childhood,
elementary, or secondary teacher certification and
want to study the essential aspects of literacy.
After announcing the addition of the Master of
Science in Education degree earlier this year, the
program accepted 30 students who began course
work in the fall 2007 semester. Dr. Jane Schafer,
professor of education and director of the teacher
education program, has received numerous
comments on the benefits of the HLG program.
“Students are glad to have a local program.
They feel the classes are useful and
applicable to their teaching,”
said Schafer.
Schafer is impressed
with the current
students in
the graduate
program.
“The students
enrolled in the
program are
outstanding
teachers. Our
goal is to help
them increase their
knowledge of effective
educational practices to
benefit the students in their
classroom. It is also our goal to help
them utilize research in their personal and
professional pursuits as life-long learners,” said
Schafer.
The Hannibal-LaGrange Athletic Department added men’s
volleyball and men’s and women’s swimming to its expanding list
of NAIA sports offerings, beginning the fall of 2008. Approval of
men’s and women’s swimming came during the full-board trustee
meeting held July 13, 2007, and approval of men’s volleyball
received trustee approval on September 14, 2007.
“Adding these new programs to our growing athletic
department will provide additional avenues for prospective
student athletes to compete on the college level,” said Dr. Tom
Hufty, vice president for collegiate affairs and administrator for
the athletic department.
Dr. Woodrow Burt, HLG President, remarked that the additions
of these programs are strategic components in the ongoing
Building for the Future capital campaign. The addition and
development of new programming in both athletic and academic
areas are part of the overall scope of the capital campaign.
The men’s volleyball team will consist of 15 student athletes
who will receive scholarships for participation. Hufty believes
the popularity of men’s volleyball will grow in the coming years.
“For the past several years, we have seen increased interest in
men’s volleyball. With the addition of Coach David Ganser and
his passion for the sport, men’s volleyball will now become a
reality at HLG.”
Head Volleyball Coach David Ganser anticipates great interest
in the new program. “The addition of men’s volleyball to the
HLG Expands List of NAIA Sports
Swimming & Men’s Volleyball
varsity athletic program here at HLG is exciting not only for
the school, but for the growth of volleyball in this area,” added
Ganser.
“Our region of competition provides plenty of top level play
which should make the program inviting in addition to the great
Christian education HLG provides.”
The swimming teams will consist of 20-30 student athletes
who will receive scholarships for participation. HLG’s Athletic
Department staff has already begun the student recruiting process
and has named Kara Viorel as the new coach. Viorel is the head
coach for the Hannibal, Missouri, YMCA Hannibal Hurricanes
swimming program. Coach Viorel will continue her duties at the
YMCA along with her new coaching responsibilities at Hannibal-
LaGrange College.
Viorel believes that her dual coaching roles for the YMCA
Hurricanes and the HLG Trojans will enhance the college
program. “I believe we will see the two teams complement each
other. We will see many local swimmers stay in Hannibal and
continue swimming on the college level,” said Viorel.
HLG is a Division I NAIA (National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics) school. Those interested in the men’s
volleyball or men’s and women’s swimming programs should
contact Jason Nichols, athletic director, at 573-221-3675, ext.
Secker Fieldhouse Dedication
On Friday, November 16, HLG trustees, faculty, staff, students,
and friends gathered to dedicate the Secker Fieldhouse. The
Secker Fieldhouse will house the HLG wrestling program. The
approximately 6,000 sq. ft. fieldhouse will provide locker room
and training spaces for wrestling and outdoor sports. Girard Secker
of Hannibal, Missouri, for whom the building is named, has been a
supporter of HLG for many years, and was eager to help further the
athletic program at HLG.
“We are blessed to have
friends who recognize
that in order for HLG to
excel, we must have the
support of others. We
can’t do what we do
alone,” said Dr. Woodrow
Burt, President of HLG.
“Over the years, these
friends have stepped up to
provide the resources to enable us to grow and to strengthen our
programs. We are here today to acknowledge the generosity and
thoughtfulness of one such individual—Girard (Gardy) Secker.”
Burt went on to acknowledge and thank the many volunteers
who labored to build the fieldhouse including Al Groner, Archie
and Trudy Hayden, Bob Ingram and numerous others from Bethel
Baptist Association, Illinois Campers for Christ, and HLG staff and
wrestling athletes. Burt recognized Kenny Poore of Poepping,
Stone, Bach & Associates architectural firm, and thanked Heimer
Construction, Bross Construction, and Bleigh Construction
companies for their expertise and help with the project.
Jason Nichols, athletic director, also thanked Secker for his
generous gift. “Because of the way the Lord has provided
through Mr. Secker, HLG students will now benefit from another
outstanding facility as well as having an excellent recruiting tool
for prospective student-athletes. When a prospective studentathlete,
especially a wrestler, tours the Secker Fieldhouse, this
building alone will give HLG an edge on many institutions void of
such an asset,” said Nichols.
December Graduation 2007
On a snowy morning in December, family
and friends of 73 graduates plowed through ice
and snow-packed highways and streets to attend
the Hannibal-LaGrange College December
Graduation ceremony. The ceremony, held on
Saturday, December 15, in the Parker Theatre
of the Roland Fine Arts Center, was the second
December graduation in the history of the
college.
Dr. Woodrow W. Burt, president of Hannibal-
LaGrange College, stood and addressed the
crowd. “Welcome to sunny, warm Hannibal,
Missouri.” The audience responded with
laughter. Burt went on to acknowledge the
graduates, special guests, and trustees, and
introduce the keynote speaker and 2007
recipient of the HLG Outstanding Service
Award, Dr. Gerald R. Davidson. This honor is
awarded to an HLG alumnus who has given
outstanding service to the college or his or
her community through involvement in civic
endeavors, religious leadership, or philanthropic
efforts.
Davidson, who served several terms on the
HLG Board of Trustees and is a 1958 graduate
of Hannibal-LaGrange College, told Burt that
he was humbled by the award. “I want to say
to you, Hannibal-LaGrange College holds a
very special place in my heart,” said Davidson.
Speaking of his years as a student at HLG,
Faculty & Staff News
Dr. Martha Bergen,
professor of Christian
education, was inducted into
Gardner-Webb University’s
Gallery of Distinguished
Graduates on October 27,
2007. Her portrait, along
with a brief bio, will be
placed in the University’s Dover
Campus Center building.
Dr. Robert Bergen, professor
of Old Testament and Biblical
languages and chair of the division
of Christian studies, has written
the explanatory footnotes for 95
chapters of the Old Testament in
the Apologetics Study Bible. This
Bible is second on the December
2007 list of best-selling study
Davidson continued. “These were the most
impressionable, valuable, and helpful years of
my entire life. Of all the institutions that I have
attended or been involved with, one that stands
out above all is Hannibal-LaGrange College.”
Davidson went on to share that on the drive up
to Hannibal, he and his wife, Verlena, counted
20 members of their family, over the
past 60 years, who have attended
Hannibal-LaGrange College. “So,
Hannibal is a very, very special place in
my heart and my life,” said Davidson.
Davidson, the newly elected
president of the Missouri Baptist
Convention and retired pastor of
First Baptist Church, Arnold, MO
(1976-2006), addressed the seventythree
graduates with his message, “The
House that Wisdom Built.” Davidson
challenged the graduates to build a
wise house (life) using seven pillars—
God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Faith, Courage,
Commitment, and Prayer. “Young people,
you are getting ready to build your house. Let
God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, faith, courage,
commitment, and prayer be the pillars, and they
will support you through eternity.”
Bibles and is now available in Christian bookstores and on
the web.
Bob Craig, two-time alumnus of HLG and former director
of housekeeping, along with his wife, Margie, will serve
a three-year assignment through the International Mission
Board in Bucharest, Romania. The Craigs will work as
church planters in Romania.
Louis Riggs, director of grant research, has written a
review of the book Tiny Essentials of an Effective Volunteer
Board by Ken Burnett (White Lion Press Ltd., 2006)
in the November/December 2007 issue of Advancing
Philanthropy.
Dr. Jerry Thomason, former professor of theatre and
chair of the theatre department, has assumed new faculty
responsibilities (fall 2007) in the English department.

Whoever said “you can’t
go home” did not know Dr.
Garry Breland. Breland,
who has spent sixteen years
serving as a faculty member
and the last eight years as
vice president for academic
affairs at Hannibal-LaGrange
College, announced in
August 2007 that he had
accepted a new position in
a familiar place. Breland
began his new duties as vice
president for academic affairs
at William Carey University
in October 2007. How is that familiar Breland is a
1974 alumnus of William Carey University and is a native
Mississippian.
William Carey University, named after the great missionary
and home to the Center for Study of the Life and Work of
William Carey, D.D. (1761-1834), is located in Hattiesburg,
Mississippi, about 60 miles from the Mississippi Gulf
Coast. The university enrollment, which includes three
campuses (Hattiesburg, Gulf Coast, and New Orleans),
is approximately 3,000. Breland will serve in a capacity
similar to his position at HLG. William Carey was hit hard
by Hurricane Katrina in 2006, and Breland sees part of his
responsibility to help in recovery efforts on many levels.
“One of the challenges I will face at Carey is helping to
overcome the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which
still has a significant effect on the facilities, programs, and
enrollment.”
Breland’s tenure at HLG was marked by many significant
advances in the life of the college. From the devastating
campus fire of 1989 through the rebuilding of facilities
and programs, Breland provided leadership and support
as the college grew in enrollment, facilities, and academic
programming. “Being part of the growth of people is the
greatest blessing. Seeing students mature, launch their
careers, and advance in their lives is very rewarding.
Working with faculty and growing along with them through
the years has been a rich and meaningful experience,” said
Breland.
The HLG administration, faculty, and staff presented
Breland with an appreciation plaque, a framed print of the
artist Joy Janes’ drawing of the HLG administration building,
a Boston rocker, a memory album, and countless cards
at a farewell party held on October 17. Breland and his
wife, Mary Beth, were thankful for the kindness of fellow
colleagues. “These will be treasured mementos. Mary
Beth and I read the comments in the guest book and the
many cards we received, and were genuinely touched by
the sentiments expressed,” said Breland. Even though the
Brelands will be “heading back home,” they will miss a
community of friends and extended family.
“Our children grew up with many of the children of faculty
and staff members at HLG. In many ways HLG has been like
family to us.”
Before his arrival at Hannibal-LaGrange College, Breland
pastored three churches in Mississippi during his college
and seminary years, Leaf Baptist Church in Greene County,
Gum Springs Baptist Church in Simpson County, and
Calvary Baptist Church in Silver Creek. Shortly after his
arrival at HLG, Breland was asked to pastor Oak Ridge
Baptist Church in Shelby County, Missouri, and spent 22
years as shepherd of the congregation. In addition to his
teaching responsibilities, Breland served the Hannibal
community in the practice of counseling and was a licensed
professional counselor (LPC) and a clinical member of the
American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists.
Breland received his B.A. in Biblical studies with a minor in
psychology from William Carey University, and his M.Div.
and Ed.D. in psychology and counseling from New Orleans
Baptist Theological Seminary.
Breland leaves HLG with fond memories and an
expectation of great things ahead for both him and HLG.
“Although it is extremely difficult for me to leave HLG, I
look forward to serving my alma mater and to living close
to family and friends in Mississippi,” continued Breland.
“Hannibal-LaGrange College holds an inestimable place
in the life of Missouri Baptists and in the Kingdom of
God. Personally, it has been the conduit of many of God’s
greatest blessings in my life and in the life of my family. I
will continue to cherish my time here and will treasure the
relationships I have had with the HLG family.”
10 Feature
10
A uthor and educator William Arthur Ward once shared
his four steps to achievement: “Plan purposefully. Prepare
prayerfully. Proceed positively. Pursue persistently.” These
steps, if followed enthusiastically, can direct a person or
organization toward a successful future. Planning is looking
ahead, envisioning where you want to go and taking steps to
get there. Of course, knowing where you want to go is central.
The great philosopher and former baseball player, Yogi Berra,
says, “If you don’t know where you are going, you will wind
up somewhere else.”
Strategic planning is the lifeline of any growing organization.
This type of planning directs an organization to where
they want to go. Goals, determined by members of the
organization, are coupled with budgetary projections and
tied to realistic or ambitious timetables. Short-range and
long-range plans are developed to advance the organization’s
standing and business success. The leadership of the company
or business is charged with executing the plans set before
the organization and is responsible for implementation and
maintenance of the plan to successful ul completion.
Strategic planning for Christian higher
education institutions is similar to that of
any growing business or organization, n,
however, with one key additional
factor. The strategic plan for a
Christian institution begins with an
understanding of a master plan—
the Master’s plan. The success of
any Christian college or university
is deeply rooted in God’s word. The
Christian leader with responsibilities
in the marketplace begins with the
premise that “Whatever you do, work
at it with all your heart, as working for
the Lord, not for men.” (Colossians 3:23
NIV) Motivation, then, is what separates
good from great. When a leader is motivated to
present himself/herself to God as one approved (2 Timothy
2:15), the overflow of his or her motivation can be observed
through the success of the organization.
When a Christian higher education institution like
Hannibal-LaGrange College receives accolades and awards
for achievements or accomplishments, the leaders are quick
to point to successful execution and completion of strategic
plans. Moreover, the leaders know that the seed of the
flourishing product had its beginnings in the heart and mind of
one approved by God.
This may be the reason it is sometimes difficult to “blow
one’s own horn.” The accolades and achievements are
believed to be the result of the work of many and not just a
few. The honors and awards are just a byproduct of careful
plans and strategic implementation from many workers
‘approved by God.’ The following achievements from the
past few months are a result of a concerted effort to grow an
institution that honors God.
America’s Best Christian Colleges
In September, 2007, Hannibal-LaGrange College was named
one of America’s Best Christian Colleges by Institutional
Research & Evaluation, Inc. HLG is one of only seven higher
education institutions in Missouri named as one of America’s
Best Christian Colleges. Over 1,400 colleges and universities
nationwide were analyzed in consideration for this honor.
HLG was named to America’s Best Christian Colleges on
the basis of documented environment of Christian influence,
grade point average of incoming freshmen, and the ACT/SAT
scores of incoming freshmen. This is the fifth consecutive year
that Hannibal-LaGrange College has received this honor and
scored well above
the national average.
Dr. Woodrow W. Burt, HLG President, was
happy to hear about the inclusion of
Hannibal-LaGrange in the 11th annual
report of the national college survey.
“Even though we have always known
that we are one of the best Christian
colleges in the nation, it is good
to receive accolades from such a
prestigious research organization as
Institutional Research & Evaluation,
Inc.,” said Burt.
Institutional Research & Evaluation,
Inc., is an independent research and
consulting organization specializing in
the recruiting and retention of students for
institutions of higher education. Consistent
with its mission, and as a guide by which other
institutions i i may be compared, Institutional Research
& Evaluation, Inc., identifies the American colleges and
universities providing students the highest quality education.

HLG Nursing
Division
In October 2007,
the Nursing Division
of Hannibal-LaGrange
College announced that
for the third consecutive
year, HLG nursing
graduates achieved
a 100% pass rate on
the National Council
Licensing Examination
(NCLEX® ) for registered
nurses. This pass rate
applies to all graduates
of the Associate of
Science in Nursing (ASN)
Program. In the November/December 2007/January 2008
Missouri State Board of Nursing newsletter, HLG was listed as
the only ASN program in the state of Missouri with a 100%
pass rate on NCLEX® examinations. There are sixty RN
programs in the state of Missouri; thirty-seven are associate
degree programs.
“Our nursing students successfully completed a rigorous
program and we are extremely proud of their 100% pass
rate on the NCLEX®,” states Diane Bibb, MSN, RN, director
of nursing and allied health at HLG. “Our nursing faculty is
committed to excellence in the profession of nursing, and a
100% pass rate on the NCLEX® for three consecutive years
clearly demonstrates that commitment.”
The Hannibal-LaGrange Associate Degree Nursing Program
prepares graduates to achieve success on the NCLEX-RN as
well as to become proficient nurses. Students are trained in
academic and various clinical settings which enable them to
learn trends, issues, and technology that shape the practice
of nursing. According to Bibb, every nursing graduate from
the Class of 2007 has accepted employment in the healthcare
field in the states of Missouri, Illinois, Texas, or Minnesota.
Also in September 2007, the National League for Nursing
Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) awarded the HLG Nursing
program with continuing accreditation through 2012.
NLNAC is a nationally recognized accrediting agency for
nursing programs, and is a voluntary process that recognizes
programs which meet or exceed standards and criteria for
educational quality. In addition to accreditation by NLNAC,
Hannibal-LaGrange College is also accredited by North
Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Men’s Soccer
The HLG men’s soccer program reached a milestone on
Saturday, October 6, boasting the 100th win in program
history and the 100th win for Head Coach David Erskine.
Coach David Erskine, head men’s soccer coach at
Hannibal-LaGrange College, achieved his 100th win against
Harris-Stowe State University, winning 6-2. Erskine, now
in his 10th year as head coach with a current record of
100-77-14, began his career at HLG in 1998 as the school’s
first head men’s and women’s soccer coach. After leading the
women’s team to a 1999 NCCAA Regional Championship,
an NCCAA National tournament berth and receiving
American Midwest Conference (AMC) Coach of the Year
honors, Erskine stepped down from the women’s program
following the 2000 season. Erskine, able to focus solely on
the men’s soccer program, has since led the men’s team to six
straight post-season appearances, accumulating a 77-35-10
record over that time. The Trojans were AMC regular season
champions in 2006 and finished the year ranked 14th in the
nation. In addition, Erskine has received Conference Coach
of the Year accolades in 2002 and 2006.
Even though Erskine tried to keep the significance of the
upcoming game as low profile as possible, Trojan fans were
prepared for the win. The hillside and sideline of Blackwell
Field were lined with fans holding signs with the number
“100” in large print. In the final minute of the game, the
crowd began to hold their signs and yell in recognition of the
eventual win.
The 100th win is an
encouragement and
validation for Coach
Erskine and his hard work
put into the program. “I
first want to thank the Lord
that I have been able to be a part of HLG and this program,”
continued Erskine. “As a coach, I must keep things in
perspective. It is merely a victory at a GAME, namely soccer.
There are greater events in life, greater challenges, and thus
greater ‘wins.’ With this perspective in mind, in the realm
of HLG athletics, this milestone reflects a focused pursuit of
excellence and perseverance in that pursuit,” said Erskine.
Dr. Tom Hufty, vice president for collegiate affairs and
athletic administrator, sees more in the Trojan soccer program
than just a record-setting number. “The number in the “W”
column is only a small reflection of the impact Coach Erskine
has made on the HLG Men’s Soccer program. Much more
than being successful on the field, Coach Erskine desires
for his team to have a spiritual experience here at HLG that
will change their lives forever,” added Hufty. “The hard
work he demands of his team teaches them that in order to
succeed, they must persevere. Dave has been a model of
perseverance, and we are pleased to celebrate this milestone
with him.”
NAMB Courts Redford Award
On November 16 at the 66th annual HLG Booster Banquet,
Dr. Woodrow Burt stood before more than 800 of his closest
friends to share some not-yet-released information. “Four
years ago, Hannibal-LaGrange College made a commitment
to be the center for recruitment and training of students called
into mission service. Over the past few years, the missions
emphasis at HLG has grown and expanded to include the
addition of the Carroll Missions Center; an Intercultural
Missions major/minor; mission trips every school break (both
domestically and internationally); the addition of Carroll
Missions Week where missionaries from all over the world
come to HLG to speak at the 3-day conference; the acquisition
and establishment of the Hagerman Missionary Residence
where we provide a home for missionaries on state-side
assignment; and in the fall 2007 semester, the attainment of
the goal of 100% mission participation among residential
students.” Burt continued. “In 2005, by participating in
mission efforts through the North American Mission Board, we
received an award for placing in the top 10 of 119 colleges
and universities who send students to participate in NAMB
projects. And this week we received word that HLG will
once again receive the Courts Redford Award for Excellence
in Student Missionary Deployment in recognition for being
one of the top schools in the nation for mobilizing students for
missions with the North American Mission Board for 2007.”
The Courts Redford
Award honors colleges and
universities for preparing and
sending student missionaries
to college campuses,
beaches, national parks, inner
cities and rural communities,
where they obtain hands-on
mission experience while
supporting the evangelism
and church-planting strategies
of local Southern Baptist churches and associations.
Burt had more to share. “Not only are we ‘one’ of the top
colleges and universities, out of 314 colleges and universities
who send students to work with the North American Mission
Board, HLG RANKED #1.” The official word and award
will be presented by a NAMB representative during Carroll
Missions Week in March 2008.
Retention Rates
Student retention is vital to the growth and development
of any college or university. The tracking of first-to-secondyear
retention is beneficial for prospective students, current
students, and the college. Achieving average to high rates
can help undergird the financial stability of an institution.
Financial predictions and budget considerations may be
influenced by retention, persistence, and graduation rates.
Dr. Karry Richardson, associate dean of retention and career
services, understands the importance of a high retention rate.
“By identifying at-risk student patterns and withdrawal factors,
the college is better able to determine directions for further
institutional support and growth. Increasing rates helps to
validate the college’s efforts and commitment in seeking ways
to assist students with their first-year experience and to support
ongoing student success. “
The student retention rate cohort consists of first-time, fulltime,
fall semester, degree-seeking freshmen who complete
their first year at a postsecondary institution and return the
following fall semester. ACT National Collegiate Retention
Rates are used to compare Hannibal-LaGrange’s rates.
On March 29, 2006, the Strategic Planning Team met to
receive a presentation on retention. Dr. Richardson proposed
addressing three areas of critical importance to retention:
increasing student and institutional commitment, improving
communications, and strengthening connections. It was
determined by the Team that improvements in these areas
would need to involve campus-wide participation and effort.
On April 19, 2006, the HLG Strategic Planning Team
adopted the goals of achieving a 70% freshman retention
rate and a 60% graduation rate. For both goals, the Team set
an expectation of 2% increases per year until each goal was
achieved. The college’s 2005 retention rate was 63%, below
ACT comparative national norm of approximately 71%.
In fall 2006, additional support services, campus efforts, and
programs were put in place to help students overcome some
of the personal, academic, career, and engagement challenges
that affect persistence. And on December 5, 2007, the HLG
Strategic Planning Team received a report that the 2006
freshman rate was 74.4%. The 2006 ACT national retention
rate for similar institutional type was 70.6% and for admission
selectivity 69.7%. The collective efforts of many individuals
helped Hannibal-LaGrange College to achieve above-national
retention rates within one year.
______________
Accolades and achievements are verbal and visible signs
of strategic plans realized. Hannibal-LaGrange College
continues to set and meet high standards of excellence in
Christian higher education. The institution has committed
to take additional steps or leaps toward achievement. The
leadership of HLG strives to ‘plan purposefully, prepare
prayerfully, proceed positively, and pursue persistently.’ Where
will we wind up On top!

Charlie Hall
Student Life
in concert
The HLG community was abuzz with anticipation of the homecoming
concert in October. Tickets were bought and seats were saved and as the lights
went down in the packed Parker Theatre, the crowd erupted with excitement.
The Charlie Hall band was featured this year, and as was evident by all the
voices singing along with them, they have a few fans at HLG.
Consisting of Charlie Hall, Kendall Combes, Brian Bergman, Dustin
Ragland, and Quint Anderson, this five-pack, who live in Oklahoma City, OK,
have toured anywhere from Jakarta, Indonesia, to now Hannibal, Missouri,
since 1991. Their eclectic style with a twist on contemporary Christian music
has really touched this generation. With a great mix of lights and sounds,
they’re able to put on an amazing show while still giving all the glory to God.
On their website, www.charliehall.com, Charlie, the “one with the braided
beard,” expresses the desire to be “honed into God, where I’m not part of a
culture where I’m trying to make the people around me think, ‘Hey, that’s a
good Christian.’ I’m just trying to pursue God and not pursue being accepted
into a club. I’m more honed into my pursuit of God in Christ and how he’s
forming me and changing and helping me love him and know him.”
Lindsay Pollard, an HLG freshman from Arnold, MO, enjoyed her first
Charlie Hall concert. “I have been a fan for about a year and his song ‘Center’
is the theme song for so many aspects of my life right now, from relationships,
to finding out who I am in Christ and just determining what I am doing with
the rest of my life. It was the first time I had seen him in concert and loved it.
It felt more like a worship service than a concert.”
“This was a wonderful night of music and fun! Charlie Hall is an amazing
person and performer,” said Randy Shepard, director of student development.
“The students love his songs and now have a better understanding of him and
his music. There is a lot of hard work that goes into each concert, but just
hearing from students and how much they loved the concerts, it is all worth
it!”
2007 President’s Report
The 2006-2007 academic year saw growth in new academic programming as well as added athletic offerings and facilities.
On December 16, 2006, we held our first December graduation ceremony and conferred 57 degrees on the inaugural
graduates. On May 5, 2007, we conferred an additional 178 academic degrees, totaling a record-breaking 235 graduates for
the 2006-07 academic year. We expanded our list of NAIA sports to include track and field and wrestling to enhance the
already strong athletic offerings and broke ground on a new fieldhouse to support the wrestling program.
The summer of 2007 saw many refurbishing projects including painting in residential housing, completion of the multi-year
remodeling project on quadraplex housing units, roofing, and general repair of campus facilities.
Hannibal-LaGrange College depends on the generous gifts of its supporters to fund not only our growing capital and
endowment needs, but also a portion of our daily operations budget.
The leadership of Hannibal-LaGrange College continues to take careful steps to assure that all funds are used wisely in order
to provide the best possible education for HLG students. The Hannibal-LaGrange College community expresses their thanks
to all the wonderful friends of the college as they continue to share financially to support the work and vision of this fine
STRATEGIC PLANNING
The Strategic Planning Team of Hannibal-LaGrange College was
established to identify and recommend the implementation of goals
supportive of the mission and vision statements of the college.
The Strategic Planning Team continues its important work this year,
once again emphasizing student retention and the enhancement of
the freshman year experience through academic “breakout sessions”
and the PACE program.
The Strategic Planning Team also continues to support progress
toward the goal of having 600 resident students by 2010,
improvement of campus facilities, access for students to technology
to enhance their educational experience, and efforts to increase the
overall academic excellence of the college.
Accomplishments from academic year 2006-2007 include adding
an intercultural missions major, a Master of Education degree
program, a fulltime athletic director, and the implementation of an
evening program in early childhood education in Hannibal.
The strategic planning process is vitally important to the success of
the college. The Strategic Planning Team will continue to make every
effort to provide appropriate, effective guidance in support of the
ideals, values, and goals of Hannibal-LaGrange College.
22 26 Institutional Advancement
Success is a Journey
by Connie Benson ‘94 • Vice President for Institutional Advancement
Achievements come in various fashions, and they take place
throughout one’s lifetime. As John Maxwell states in Your Roadmap
for Success, “Success is a journey.” We begin celebrating our
achievements when we are babies taking our first step, next in early
childhood successfully tying our shoes, and later on learning to ride
a bike without falling. All of these are major milestones. Then as we
continue to grow older, reading our first chapter book and conquering
math are two momentous occasions, and, of course, we can’t
forget about winning our first sporting event! No matter
what age bracket we are in, achievements are a part of life.
One thing we must never forget __ we have not made these
accomplishments alone. The individuals behind the scene
who deserve accolades include our parents, grandparents,
brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends cheering
us on, helping us financially along the way, and guiding
us with each step as we cross the various finish lines in
our lives. Accomplishments are made through the help of
many people.
Over many decades, Hannibal-LaGrange College has
made numerous achievements because of the help of
countless wonderful people who believe in Christian higher
education. Notable achievements HLG has seen over the
years include growing from a two-year school to a fouryear
school and advancing to the graduate level with the
addition of the Master of Science in Education degree in
2007. We now have nearly 1,200 students, including approximately
450 living on campus. Over the past eighteen
years, brand new buildings such as the Roland Fine Arts Center, Memorial
Hall, Burt Administration Building, Mabee Sports Complex,
Partee Center, Carroll Missions Center, and the Secker Fieldhouse have been added to the campus,
with new building projects to begin in the near future.
Because of our achievements, we are in need of a new library and allied health/science buildings.
We have reached a milestone of $5 million through the generous gifts many have contributed
to the Building for the Future Campaign, but we still have a long way to go to reach our $30
million goal. If you have not given to the campaign, I hope that you will consider being a part of
HLG’s achievements and send your gift in today. Because of you, our alumni, friends, and donors
who continuously give to Hannibal-LaGrange College, our achievements have been many and significant.
God is blessing HLG through you as you make not only these buildings but also scholarships
possible for our students. We give God all the praise for the many blessings that He has given
to Hannibal-LaGrange College, and we thank the Lord for you who share your blessings with us.

Two Achievers, Zacchaeus and Tag-A-Long
by Carl Singer • HLG Campaign Consultant
Zacchaeus and Tag-A-Long never
met. They are separated by 2,000 years
and 10,000 miles, but in reading about
Zacchaeus and walking with
Tag-a-long, I have found
several similarities.
Zacchaeus was a tax
collector, a resident of
Jericho, and a man so
small that he climbed a
tree in order to see over the
crowds surrounding Jesus.
Zacchaeus was evidently very
quick on his feet because
he ran ahead of the crowd
and found a large sycamore
tree for his vantage point.
He was also quick to respond, for when Lord called, he “made
haste” to come down from his perch. Up to this point in his life
Zacchaeus had only succeeded in making people hate him.
The second character is Tag-A-Long, a pint-sized dog who
took up residence on Singerhill Farm a few years ago. “Tag”
was named because his short legs so limited his speed that he
was always bringing up the rear. The runt of the litter, he was
dumped out near Singerhill Farm to starve. But Tag became a
survivor and an achiever in spite of his circumstances.
You will recall from the Zacchaeus story in the 19th chapter of
Luke, that Jesus told the despised tax collector to descend from
the tree and prepare for the Lord’s visit to his house. Initially,
Zacchaeus only wanted to see Jesus, but when the opportunity
arose for a closer relationship, he immediately descended and
made haste to prepare a meal for the Lord. Later he declared,
“Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor and if I have
taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him
fourfold.” He seized the opportunity!
Tag-A-Long’s achievements are certainly not based upon
obvious physical ability, but upon determination and quick
response to opportunities. When a rabbit runs into a brush pile,
the more classically shaped hunting dogs wait in vain for their
prey to leave so they can give chase. But Tag, with his short legs
and bullet-shaped body, responds to the opportunity at hand
by following the rabbit through the tangle of briars and the
brambles into the depths of the brush pile. His hunting success
is noteworthy.
If achievement is a “noteworthy and successful action,” then
Zacchaeus’ achievement was measured by the Lord’s statement,
“This day salvation has come to this house.” For Tag-A-Long it’s
a rabbit for lunch and the simple words of praise, “Good dog.”
Zacchaeus needed and received salvation and “Tag” learned
how to be a survivor, noteworthy achievements for two former
underachievers.
Connectors Connecting Often
The Campus/Community Connectors organization has grown from
an idea to more than thirty members within the brief span of
just over a year.
Connectors have become a fixture at such campus
events as senior recitals, children’s theatre shows,
dramatic productions, blood drives, music
department concerts, soccer and basketball
games, December graduation, fall welcome
week, and a favorite of the Connectors, steak
nights. Students have enjoyed the baked
goods prepared and donated by Connectors
on numerous occasions for such events as
scavenger hunts, mid-terms and finals weeks, as
well as periodic student fundraising efforts.
The Connectors have contributed well over
a thousand hours of volunteer service to the
Hannibal-LaGrange College community over the
past year and are looking into new ways to help even
more, such as campus beautification.
Connectors aren’t bashful about getting the word out
regarding opportunities for service at HLG. Connectors members
have spoken before nearly every service club in Hannibal—and some
clubs in surrounding communities.
If you’re interested in becoming a Connector, please let us know.
The Connectors are dedicated to providing service to
the campus community and improving connections
between the Hannibal-LaGrange College community
and the Hannibal-area community. Opportunities
include service on the Hospitality Committee,
which assists with receptions and programs
for student recitals and helps find host homes
for students who can’t make it home for the
holidays; the Service Committee, which assists
with such activities as welcome week and
visit days; the Membership Committee, which
helps recruit new members; and the Education
Committee, which publicizes Connectors
activities.
We’re looking forward to the increased growth
of the Connectors in 2007-08—and celebrating
many more of their achievements.
28 Alumni Insights
Through Great Effort
by Jo Ann Holcumbrink Raney ‘66
Director of Alumni Services and Annual Fund
My husband Larry retired in January, 2006, and we decided to do
something we’d always thought about, but never really had the time
to do—we decided to “flip a house.” Everyone we talked to that had
some experience in that area commented, “Yeah, I did that once” __
once being the key word! We found out why! We began the work on
January 12 and finished October 20. We just didn’t think it
would take that long—it goes so much faster on TV! Now
that the hard work is over, and we can stand back and see
what we achieved, there is a sense of accomplishment and
pride in a job well done.
Achievement is defined as “something accomplished, as
through great effort, skill, perseverance, or courage.” Our
remodel took great effort, more skill on Larry’s part than
mine, and a lot of perseverance. It also took a lot of faith
that once it was finished, someone would like what we did
with the house and want to purchase it. Whether or not
we’re ready to notch another “achievement” on our belt with
another remodel is yet to be decided. I’ll let you know. . . .
In this issue of Reflections we are focusing on
achievements. You will read about three alumni who have
achieved great success in the areas of teaching, public
speaking, pastoral ministry, computer information, and so
much more! These three individuals are just a few of the many HLG
alumni who have, through great effort, skill, and perseverance stayed
the course. Because of that, they were acknowledged by fellow alumni, faculty, and
administration for their achievements.
Homecoming weekend was so much fun! We had a record number of alumni who
participated in the HLG Alumni Golf Classic; there were over 100 entries in the Trojan
Turkey Trek, and over 450 alumni and students attended the banquet. The concert
Friday evening by This Hope from Woodstock, Georgia, was fantastic! The Trojans were
victorious over a tough team from Robert Morris College in the homecoming game.
I hope you’ll mark your calendars and join us next year during homecoming for a
very special celebration. Hannibal-LaGrange College will celebrate 150 years! Plans
are well underway already. It doesn’t matter when you were a student at HLG—at its
beginning on the Hannibal campus, during the war years, or during the difficult days
in the early 70’s when everyone predicted HLG would close its doors. Or perhaps
you were a student when the college was devastated by fire in 1989, and you went to
chapel in the tent and ate your meals at Ponderosa or McDonald’s. If you were here in
the 90’s, you’ve seen increased enrollment, new facilities, and new programs.
Alumni, you are an integral part of HLG’s history of perseverance and courage. You
are part of its success and achievements. Plan to come celebrate with us November 7
and 8, 2008!

Booster Banquet
29
Hannibal-LaGrange College held its 66th annual
Booster Banquet on Friday, November 16, with a theme
of Things that Last Forever. Over 800 guests were in
attendance, eager to hear the special guest speaker,
celebrated songwriter, communicator and musician,
Gloria Gaither.
Gloria Gaither has been married for more than forty
years to her soul-mate and writing partner, Bill Gaither.
Their life together has been defined by their mutual
commitment to that which is lasting. As a result of this
philosophy, their union has produced over 700 songs,
hundreds of recordings, numerous awards, musicals, and
a collection of books. “You have to write,” says Gloria.
“You’d choke to death if you didn’t.”
Bill and Gloria have been recipients of many
Grammies, Dove Awards, and the ASCAP Songwriters
of the Century Award, and they have been inducted into
the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Gloria
Gaither has spent her life communicating the ideas
that change, encourage, and enrich the lives of people
everywhere. Gloria has written over 40 books, including
titles for adults and children, and created scripts for
over 100 videos. She has earned the respect of the
academic community with honorary doctorates from six
universities. Articulate and inspiring, Gloria Gaither is
in great demand as a speaker, guest lecturer on college
campuses, and mentor to writers, lyricists, and poets.
Many know how full Gloria’s life has been because
of her family and prosperous career, but the guests at
HLG’s Booster Banquet now also know that Gloria’s life
has been filled with interruptions. She spoke of many
situations where her plan for her life was interrupted in
some way or another, but it always impacted her in a
profound way.
“You can plan all you want, but most of your life is
an interruption. I am learning that instead of being bent
out of shape about the interruptions in my life, I need
to embrace them and recognize that it is God’s will for
my life,” continued Gloria. “I dare you to give God the
interruptions. Don’t miss them! God is trying his best
to interrupt our plans. Hold your plans with a loose
open hand, and when you leave here I hope you get so
interrupted that you can’t wait to wake up the next day.”
The evening also included a student testimony by
HLG sophomore Karissa Walton and performances by
the Hannibal-LaGrange College Advanced Handbell
Choir, and Vision, HLG’s Southern Gospel men’s quartet,
accompanied by Matt Assel.
Jo Ann Raney, alumni director, was pleased with the
evening. “Our 66th annual Booster Banquet was a
tremendous success! Great food, outstanding fellowship,
and a fantastic speaker--what more could you ask for”
Raney continued, “We were so privileged to have Gloria
Gaither as our speaker this year. What an inspiration!”
For information about next year’s Booster Banquet,
please contact Raney at (573) 221-3675, ext. 3122.

32 Alumni Profile
ALUMNUS MAKES SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTION FOR
ENDOWED STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Written by a former college
classmate and friend,
E. Dean Burns
Horatio Alger was an American
author who wrote famous books
for boys. The heroes in his books
always rose from tattered poverty
to riches and respectability. His
books about “rags-to-riches”
included Ragged Dick, Luck and
Pluck, Sink or Swim, and Tattered
Tom. Alger’s associations with
penniless boys in the streets of New York City gave him
the background for his books. While the time of these
books was in the mid-1800’s, likenesses of those stories
exist in our midst today.
One such story can be told about an alumnus of
Hannibal-LaGrange College, John L. Daniels. John L.
Daniels, who preferred to be addressed as “JLD,” was
born on November 23, 1933, and died August 10,
2007. His residence was in Chesterfield, Missouri, at
the time of his death. Shortly after Daniels’ birth, his
family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and rented a house
located on Tower Grove Street. Daniels’ parents, Albert
L. and Agnes M. (Hutson) Daniels, had seven children.
When Daniels was very young, his mother died. He and
three of his sisters were placed in Mullamphy Orphan’s
Home (now closed) located at Taylor and Marilyn
Avenues in the inner city of St. Louis. The appearance
of the orphanage was gloomy, cold, and institutionallooking,
and Daniels’ stories of life in the orphanage
were dispiriting and disturbing. One definition of an
orphan, according to Webster, is “one deprived of some
protection or advantage.” Those who knew Daniels
can understand (or maybe not understand) his psyche,
his traits, his soul, his personality, his mind, and his
behaviors because of his early life experiences. Living in
the orphanage and numerous foster homes, he attended
public schools in the city of St. Louis and graduated from
Roosevelt High School.
After graduating from high school, Daniels worked
in a hardware store in St. Louis. The store owner and
boss approached him and told him he was an intelligent
young man and encouraged him to go to college.
That following fall, he packed a small suitcase with
his possessions. He had only $21 cash in his pocket.
Daniels hitch-hiked from St. Louis to Hannibal-LaGrange
College in Hannibal, Missouri, and completed two years
of study.
Daniels transferred to Southeast Missouri State College
where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in
Education degree. Later, he earned a master’s degree
from the University of Missouri in Columbia. His
teaching career expanded time in Scott City High School,
St. Louis Public Schools, and Parkway North High School
in St. Louis County. Daniels taught industrial education
and retired from his teaching career in 1977.
JLD was a peculiar person, but justifiably so, because
of his early life experiences. He was quiet and reserved
and did not like crowds or being in large groups of
people. He never married. As a personality trait, he
would be considered an introvert and had a somewhat
compulsive behavior.
One citation of Daniels personality trait was the note
pinned to his burial apparel that was hanging in his
closet: “For my burial, purchased at a garage sale—suit
$2, shirt $1, tie 50 cents.”
JLD was a successful and caring teacher. A former
student of his stated that “he always had favorites in
his class, and I’m glad I was one of them. He was my
favorite teacher.” Many of his students became lifetime
friends. He had extreme convictions and deep love for
his sisters. He took care of them financially and looked
after them until the end.
Eulogizing the life of John L. Daniels, individuals
echoed the following legacy of influence upon them:
caring, mature, active listener, conservative, honest,
sensitive, quiet, introvert, cautious, intelligent, and a
gentle man. Daniels was physically short, but he had
strong convictions and stood tall for them.
It is not ironic that JLD dispersed all his material
and financial possessions to his family, friends, and
institutions according to his specific wishes prior to his
death.
This closing story epitomizes his bequest of
posthumous gifts. Remembering the $21 and the small
suitcase of belongings that he hitch-hiked off to college
with, Daniels chose to make a generous donation to
Hannibal-LaGrange College. It was Daniels’ request
that a gift of $21,000 be delivered to HLG in that small
suitcase by Steven Radcliff, a former high school student
of Daniels, who is managing the estate of John L.
Daniels.
Daniels’ physicians made him cognizant of his terminal
situation a few weeks prior to his death due to advanced
leukemia.
The life of JLD could truly have been another Horatio
Alger story.
On November 3, 2007, Steven Radcliff and Dean Burns
fulfilled the wishes of John L. Daniels and delivered the
scuffed and battered suitcase containing Daniels’ HLG
diploma and memorabilia, and a check in the amount of
$21,000 to Dr. Woodrow Burt, HLG President.
Dr. Burt and Mrs. Connie Benson, vice president for
institutional advancement, stood in the lobby of the
administration building and listened to Radcliff and Burns
share stories and memories of their mentor and friend.
Mr. Daniels’ suitcase and photos are on display in the
Foster Library and will be displayed in the new Roland
Library, upon its completion.

Visual Art
In 2007 the HLG Art Department hosted two very talented
local artists in the Hagerman Art Gallery. During the months
of September and October, HLG hosted a special art exhibit
highlighting the work of professional photographer Ilya
Faden. Faden is originally from Odessa, Ukraine. He recently
moved to Hannibal with his wife
after living in St. Louis for 25 years.
Beginning with a love for Ukraine’s
expansive fields and the grandeur
of the Black Sea, Faden is enthralled
with nature; his work focuses mainly
on landscapes and plant life. He
uses natural reflected light and film
to create his images. Faden’s current
series features flowers, both common
and exotic, and was shot outdoors.
His techniques produce dramatic
and evocative images that pay homage to the rich colors and
delicate textures of flowers.
Faden is enthusiastic about joining the artistic community
of Hannibal.
Theatre
What began as an extracurricular activity for college
students has grown to an annual event for area school
children. Every year, more than
4000 elementary school students
attend the children’s show at
Hannibal-LaGrange College.
Children of all ages enjoyed this
year’s interactive show, Red vs. the
Wolf on October 11. The age-old
story of Little Red Riding Hood
takes a dramatic twist when The
Wolf gets tired of being the bad
guy. In this version, The Wolf stands
up to tell the “real story,” or at least his side of the story.
The show was full of laughs and surprises as the story was
retold from a different viewpoint. The show was directed
by Michaeleen McDonald, instructor of theatre.
November and
December’s guest artist
was professional artist
John Inman. Inman
grew up in Keokuk, IA,
but moved to Quincy,
IL, which is where he
met his wife, Mary
Ellen. They have been
married since 1961.
Inman specializes in oil paintings and has a gallery (Inman’s
Gallery) in Quincy, which has
been in business since 1974.
He has won professional
merit awards, people’s choice
awards, and blue ribbons for
his work.
The Hannibal-LaGrange
College Fine Arts division
presented a musical version
of the classic tale It’s a
Wonderful Life on November
29-December 1 in the Roland
Fine Arts Center Parker Theatre.
It’s a Wonderful Life is a 1946
American film produced
and directed by Frank Capra and based on the short story
“The Greatest Gift” written by Philip Van Doren Stern. The
musical version of this classic dates from the early 1990’s.
A guardian angel named Clarence helps the main character
George Bailey get a glimpse into the lives he’s touched and
the difference he’s made in the community.
Dr. Jerry Thomason served as artistic director for the
musical. This was Thomason’s final theatre production for
HLG.
In the fall 2007 semester Thomason moved from chair of
the theatre department to the English department. In his
final note of dramaturgy to his audience, Thomason said,
“When you hear the bell ‘tinkle’ at the end of the show,
Clarence will get his wings and I’ll say ‘so long.’ I have
certainly enjoyed producing shows and hope they have
produced some degree of enjoyment for the audiences.”

Music
The Arts
The HLG Music Department Faculty presented a recital on
September 11. Dave Corkern, instructor of music, performed
three pieces on the trumpet: “Java” by Freddy Friday, Allen
Toussaint, and Alvin Tyler; “Ballade for a Ceremony” by Eric
Ewazen; and “A Higher Plane” arranged by Phil Driscoll and
Lari Goss which is a medley of “Up Where We Belong” by
Buffy Sainte-Marie and Jack Nitzsche, “Higher Ground” by
Charles H. Gabriel, and “Holy Ground” by Geron Davis. Jessica
Woodworth was the accompanist.
Jane Griffen, assistant professor of music, is a mezzo soprano
and performed “The Man I
Love” from Lady be Good!,
“Clap Yo’ Hands” from O Kay!
(1926 Broadway show), “He
Loves and She Loves” from
Funny Face (1927 Broadway
show) and “Let’s Call the
Whole Thing Off” and “Slap
that Bass” from Shall We
Dance (1937 Hollywood
film). Karen Meade
accompanied Griffen on
keyboard, Scott Donegan on
percussion, and Frank North
on bass.
Dr. John Booth is the
chair of the HLG Music
Department. As a baritone,
he performed “When all
things Begin” and “Song of
Obedience” by Don McAfee,
and “At the River” by Aaron
Copland. Carole Jo Riley,
assistant professor of music,
accompanied Booth on the
piano.
Karen Meade, staff
accompanist, performed
three pieces on the piano:
“Concerto in F,” “I’ve Got
Rhythm,” and “Swanee,” all
arranged by George Gershwin.
Jessica Woodworth is an instructor of music. As a soprano, she
performed “No One is Alone” by Stephen Sondheim from Into
the Woods, “Who am I” and “My House” by Leonard Bernstein
from Peter Pan, and “For Good” by Stephen Schwartz from
Wicked.
In an unfortunate turn of events, the much anticipated annual
HLG Department of Music Christmas Concert was cancelled
twice due to inclement weather. “Concerts are always a great
time for students to show the stewardship of their preparation
and talents, but are not the sum total of what we do,” said Dr.
Booth. “There is a degree of disappointment in having to cancel
a concert twice, but we are pleased because our Concert Band,
Concert Choir, and Handbell Choir have paid the price of
excellence in rehearsal for a semester well done.”
The Hannibal-LaGrange College Advanced Handbell Choir
performed at a number of venues this fall. They provided prelude
music for the annual Booster Banquet on November 16, and on
November 18 they played in two area churches (FBC Moberly
and Calvary Baptist Church in Hannibal) as a part of their annual
Handbell Sunday.
Their program was a mix of new and old Christmas songs
and hymns including John Wade’s “O Come all Ye Faithful”
known by its tune name ADESTE FIDELIS. Other selections
included “Go Tell It,” “Gloria,” “Brande De L’Officiel,” and
“Regent Square.” These songs span a variety of countries
and cultures telling the Christmas story. For the first time the
Advanced Handbell Choir used an orchestral sound track in the
performance.
The Hannibal Children’s Choir, sponsored by Hannibal-
LaGrange College, held their traditional Christmas Concert on
December 17. The auditioned choir consists of students from
schools across the district from grades 3 to 6.
The Hannibal Children’s Choir was also invited to sing at
HLG’s annual Hanging of the Green Ceremony and with
the Mark Twain’s Chorale during their Christmas Concert on
December 16.
The Choir is in their twenty-first year as an educational
outreach to enhance children’s musical experience,
supplementing school and church choral training by focusing
on the preparation and performance of age-appropriate music
literature while having fun
through games, exercises, and
performances.
This year’s children’s choir is led
by Linda St. Juliana, who has taught
all grade levels in the Hannibal
Public Schools for many years. She
is presently the vocal music teacher
at Veterans Elementary School and
Coordinator of Elementary Fine
Arts in Education for the Hannibal
Public School District.

the
the last few years would be able to recognize the pre-game
anthem chanted by this eccentric group of footballers. Head
Coach David Erskine has developed a unique program that
attempts to unite players from many different countries into
one unit striving together—and often bilingually—toward a
single goal: bringing God glory by achieving excellence.
The team has accomplished just that. The past few
seasons, Erskine’s collaborations have amassed a bundle
of wins accompanied by just a handful of losses, and, in
2006, this positive return saw the Trojans through as AMC
Champions and ranked #14 nationally.
With this level of success, 2007’s team was thrust into one
of the toughest schedules in the nation. The team, comprised
of many new faces, had little time to acclimate as each week
pitted it against some new Goliath, but still the Trojans held
their own with the nation’s finest.
One such contest had HLG pack up and fly to southern
California to square off against then #2 Azusa Pacific
University. It was a memorable battle in which the Trojans
stymied two of the country’s premier forwards. In the
second overtime, with just minutes left, an APU rebound
resulted in a heart-breaking loss. Azusa would go on to
win the national championship, and, for the second-time
in two years, the Trojans would play the eventual national
champions to double overtime __ arguably better than any
other team.
The team saw many players grow up and step up. Shawn
Ohms of Old Monroe, MO, went from a guy who gave the
Trojans minutes in previous years to a player whose head
and mouth were vital, along with Gilberto Romero’s solid
leadership and defensive success. Kevin Zimmermann,
from Cancun, Mexico, followed up his Freshman of the Year
award in 2006 with a selection to the AMC All-Conference
First Team, All-Region Team, and inclusion as an honorable
“It was a memorable season with challenging road trips
to OK, KS, and CA. Although the team was disappointed
in its overall results (8-9-1, 2nd in the AMC), I was not
disappointed in how they represented HLG,” said Erskine. “I
will miss the seniors, Jose “Pepe” Nogues, Josh Duello, and
their season in an unforgettable manner which has left this group
When Head Coach Josh Jones took the helm of HLG’s crosscountry
program, he coined the phrase, “The start of a new era.”
In truth, though, with a new coach and sixteen athletes it was
hard to predict what that “era” would entail, but the running
Trojans put their best feet forward in pacing the way for Jones’
mission. “This program will put representing the Lord Jesus as its
main priority. It is my firm belief that we can have a top notch
program and maintain the integrity of a Christ follower,” said
Jones.
With the primary goal of running for Christ, the bar was set high for
the season, and incorporating this attitude insured success. It was
evident around campus and at meets that this group was unified in
its mission. They worked together and achieved on a daily basis
while, as Coach Jones put it, “They learned how to compete this
year.”
Along the road too, amidst the dehydration and side-stitches,
there were other surprises to this infant era. Liesl Nauk was
certainly one supplier of such surprises. Nauk, a sophomore,
played on the Trojan women’s soccer team a year ago but decided
to give cross-country a shot this year. Not much was expected
of Nauk, and so when she earned the AMC’s runner of the week
honor, was selected as AMC All-Conference, and finished 5th in
the AMC in leading the women’s team to a 3rd place finish in
conference, Coach Jones’ era seemed to be gaining steam.
The women’s cross-country team had one of its best years to
date, while the men had a tougher season. Battling injuries and
middling results, the team, led by sophomore Kevin Campbell,
could have easily unlaced its sneakers. Campbell received AMC
Athlete of the Week (September 9-15) honors and led his team
as they logged miles and reached new levels in their running
regiment and ability. Coach Jones used the word “maintained” to
describe the men’s season, and he looks forward to seeing where
their commitment will take them next season.
It is often said that we play sports to learn about life. If so, the
HLG Volleyball team’s lesson dealt with patience. To say this team
struggled to find wins, 8-24, might be an understatement in the
standards of second year coach, David Ganser. But Coach Ganser
does recognize the overwhelming strides they took in becoming a
team. With ten new players, many of whom were thrown directly
into the fray, and some injuries, it took this collection of young
women time to find itself in becoming a confident team, one
which should lead to a bright future behind this core group and its
2007 achievements.
Individual bright spots for the fledgling Lady Trojans were
evident.
One such high point was first-rate server Natalie Kelly, who
ranked 3rd in the nation averaging 1.1 aces per game. Kelly also
broke the single-season Trojan ace record (previously 63) with a
whopping 98, leaving her only eight from becoming the career
leader.
Freshman Shannalei Seau-Gibson provided her own spark—or
perhaps dynamite may be the better word. Gibson was a solid
outside hitter/setter who led the Trojan assault with thundering
spikes and pinpoint serves. Her versatile talents joined with a
competitive edge made a noticeable combination and earned her
the AMC coaches’ collective nod as the conference’s Freshman of
the Year and an honorable mention all-conference selection.
As these youngsters and their freshman counterparts were
making the most of their opportunities, the older Trojans weren’t
content to merely hang up their kneepads and dish out sage
advice. Sophomore Jessica Curry’s only advice was to opposing
players: “Stay away from MY net.” Curry raised her block count
to 189 this year, well on her way to becoming the career leader in
impolite refusals toward her opponents.
Sileny Aruaz also got into the statistical act, despite her
beleaguering old age. This junior soared to lead the Trojans in
smashing down kills and lop-siding Voits.
So, in the words of Coach Ganser, “The future looks very bright,
and, with the addition of some new recruits to fill the holes of
this core group, high expectations will be back and achievable in
2008.”
Local Physician Marks 10 Years
of Service to HLG
Dr. John A. Memken, M.D., HLG team physician and adjunct
faculty member, has donated ten years of
his time to HLG athletics and loves every
minute of it.
“I enjoy working with the athletes. It
helps keep me young,” says Dr. Memken.
“I volunteer with athletics as my service
to the community, plus I just really enjoy
being around the students and coaches!”
Memken attended medical school at
Southern Illinois University School of
Medicine and started practicing in the
Hannibal community in 1982. For ten
years now Memken has donated his time
to HLG athletics, performing physicals and
attending the home basketball games as the team physician.
“My main purpose as team physician is to stay behind the
scenes and keep the athletes healthy,” said Memken. “I’ve really
enjoyed working with the athletic trainers over the years. They
make my life easier!”
Head Athletic Trainer Ashlie Hirtzel is appreciative of Memken’s
time and expertise. “The thing I love about Dr. Memken is that he
is so easy to work with; I can call his office with an injured athlete
,and he will arrange his schedule to get them in that day. It’s
such a reassurance to have him at the home basketball games to
support me. No matter the situation, whether great or small, two
heads are always better than one!”
Dr. Memken’s service to HLG doesn’t stop with athletics. He
also serves as physician to HLG students and has taught five
semesters of pathophysiology for the nursing department.
Thank you, Dr. Memken, for these ten years. We look forward
to ten more!
TEAM ON A MISSION
WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM TRAVELS TO BRAZIL
The Lady Trojan Soccer team is one that operates by a
steadfast mission. They are committed to striving to be
excellent women of Christ, but on August 6, 2007, they
became a “team on a mission.”
Twenty-three members of the Lady Trojan Soccer
team packed their bags and boarded a plane for Brazil.
Accompanied by Head Coach Jason Nichols, student assistant
Cody Smith, and translator and Brazilian native Estavao Franco
(HLG men’s soccer team member), the team traveled to Sao
Paulo, Brazil, the fifth most populated city in the world.
Sao Paulo is a diverse city and one whose suffering often
goes overlooked: ten million children make their living from
the street, seven million are child laborers, 500,000 more
settle debts through prostitution, and 540,000 are infected with
AIDS. It takes a very big flashlight to shine out in a
place like this, and in their eleven-day visit, as
the Lady Trojans attempted to minister to
such brokenness, it was revealed to all of
them that they were, in fact, the ones
being ministered to through these
persevering people.
During this impacting time,
the ladies, along with their bus
driver, Ulysses (an unbeliever
who now has a Portuguese Bible
and enduring relationship with
some of the players), and Goran
and Beth Tomic, co-directors of
Ambassadors in Sports Brazil,
visited orphanages, the slums—or
“favellas”—and played several
matches truly utilizing the game
they love for a far greater purpose. Freshman Alysa Askew
reflected on this opportunity, “One of the best parts was seeing
how the kids needed the attention we gave them and how the
simple game of soccer gave us a way to minister and share the
gospel.”
After matches, members of the team would deliver
testimonies, translated through Franco, and would have a
time to socialize with their opponents, many of whom would
hear the truths of Christ for the first time. On August 17, the
women’s soccer team ventured, no matter how reluctantly,
away from this monumental experience with a renewed
passion toward the mission each person embarks upon
everyday of his or her life. This trip had been long awaited
for Coach Jason Nichols. “For a few years now, it has been
a vision of this program to go on an international sports
ministry trip. Knowing what we stand for and the
reason our program exists, it just makes sense.
Over the years, the Lord has continued to
bring more and more players to the team
who are serious about their faith and
soccer. Players started coming up to
me saying, ‘Coach, we should go on a
soccer mission trip sometime.’”
With one trip under its belt, the
Lady Trojans are already looking to
the future for other overseas ministry
opportunities, but for now, they are
content to live in the moment, with
great memories, and continue to use
soccer stateside as a platform for the
Kingdom.
