HANNIBAL-LAGRANGE UNIVERSITY<br />

STUDENT TEACHING FOR TEACHING ASSISTANTS (Degree Completion Program)<br />

PLEASE NOTE: <strong>Teaching</strong> <strong>Assistants</strong> who may wish to earn credit <strong>for</strong> student teaching through<br />

their current teaching placement MUST submit a letter of intent prior to their final year (2<br />

semesters) of professional education courses. The letter should be addressed to the <strong>Hannibal</strong>-<br />

<strong>LaGrange</strong> University Director of Teacher Education and should include justification of<br />

qualifications <strong>for</strong> this student teaching variance based on the conditions below.<br />

DESE 5CSR 80-805.040 Clinical Experience Requirements <strong>for</strong> Candidates in Professional<br />

Education Programs<br />

(2A) Programs having preservice teacher education students who have been employed in public or<br />

accredited nonpublic schools <strong>for</strong> at least two (2) years as teacher assistants shall accept such<br />

experiences in lieu of the conventional student teaching requirement if the following conditions are met:<br />

1. The preservice student’s experience as a teacher assistant was concurrent with the student’s<br />

participation in the professional education program and in the same content area and grade range <strong>for</strong><br />

which the student is seeking certification;<br />

HLG Requirement: Written verification by Superintendent/Principal of teaching assistant’s job<br />

title, responsibilities including content area and grade level, and length of employment in that<br />

position that satisfactorily meets the DESE criteria as stated in Condition #1.<br />

2. The teacher assistant shall have conducted teaching activities comparable to those required <strong>for</strong> other<br />

preservice education students in conventional student teaching placements and demonstrating similar<br />

competencies;<br />

HLG Requirement: Documentation verifying satisfactory completion of “Professional Semester<br />

Course Requirements” as listed on the attachment.<br />

3. The teacher with whom the teacher assistant served meets the qualifications <strong>for</strong> a cooperating<br />

teacher, as defined in this rule;<br />

HLG Requirement: Written verification by Superintendent/Principal that the classroom teacher<br />

with whom the teaching assistant has been placed has at least three (3) years experience in a<br />

public or accredited nonpublic school setting, having professional certification in the content area<br />

and grade range being taught.<br />

4. The teacher with whom the teacher assistant served has been provided training <strong>for</strong> observing and<br />

evaluating the assistant’s teaching practice through the institution providing the assistant’s professional<br />

education program or through the school or district’s mentor training program; and<br />

HLG Requirement: Signed verification that the HLG Supervising Teacher and the classroom<br />

Cooperating Teacher read and discussed the HLG <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Teaching</strong> Handbook.<br />

5. The teacher assistant has been working with permission and under the authority of the principal of the<br />

school or a designee.<br />

HLG Requirement: This verification may be included in condition #1 above.


PROFESSIONAL SEMESTER COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHING ASSISTANTS<br />

1. <strong>Student</strong> teachers experience a minimum of six weeks of full-time classroom teaching<br />

(three weeks in each seven-week placement or six weeks in fourteen-week placements).<br />

Full time teaching includes total responsibility <strong>for</strong> the school day including lesson<br />

planning, instruction, classroom management, assessment, and other assigned duties.<br />

2. <strong>Student</strong>s are to maintain an organized notebook/file containing lesson plans, materials<br />

used in teaching, and suggestions made by the cooperating and supervising teachers.<br />

3. <strong>Student</strong>s are to schedule a minimum of two evaluation visits with the college supervisor.<br />

4. <strong>Student</strong>s are to keep a daily reflection journal to assist him/her in developing important<br />

reflection and self-evaluation skills.<br />

5. The student is to write a mock letter to the parents of a student having academic or<br />

behavior difficulty.<br />

6. The student is to video record two of his/her lesson presentations and submit to the<br />

university supervisor a written reflection <strong>for</strong> both lessons (see HLGU website <strong>for</strong><br />

Authorization to Video Record <strong>for</strong>m). These reflections may be included in his/her<br />

Teacher Work Sample.<br />

7. The student is to prepare a Teacher Work Sample to be used as evidence of his/her<br />

developing identity as a teacher. This Teacher Work Sample will be evaluated by the<br />

student’s supervising teacher and must be passed be<strong>for</strong>e a final student teaching<br />

grade will be submitted to Registrar’s Office.<br />

8. The student is to apply <strong>for</strong> certification through the Missouri Department of Elementary<br />

and Secondary Education (see DESE Certification section on website). Written requests<br />

<strong>for</strong> official transcripts to be sent to the Missouri Department of Elementary and<br />

Secondary Education must be completed through the Registrar’s Office.<br />

9. The student is to complete the <strong>Student</strong> Evaluation of <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Teaching</strong> <strong>for</strong>m (see HLGU<br />

website) <strong>for</strong> each placement and submit it to his/her university supervisor.
