PROFESSIONAL SEMESTER COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHING ASSISTANTS<br />
1. <strong>Student</strong> teachers experience a minimum of six weeks of full-time classroom teaching<br />
(three weeks in each seven-week placement or six weeks in fourteen-week placements).<br />
Full time teaching includes total responsibility <strong>for</strong> the school day including lesson<br />
planning, instruction, classroom management, assessment, and other assigned duties.<br />
2. <strong>Student</strong>s are to maintain an organized notebook/file containing lesson plans, materials<br />
used in teaching, and suggestions made by the cooperating and supervising teachers.<br />
3. <strong>Student</strong>s are to schedule a minimum of two evaluation visits with the college supervisor.<br />
4. <strong>Student</strong>s are to keep a daily reflection journal to assist him/her in developing important<br />
reflection and self-evaluation skills.<br />
5. The student is to write a mock letter to the parents of a student having academic or<br />
behavior difficulty.<br />
6. The student is to video record two of his/her lesson presentations and submit to the<br />
university supervisor a written reflection <strong>for</strong> both lessons (see HLGU website <strong>for</strong><br />
Authorization to Video Record <strong>for</strong>m). These reflections may be included in his/her<br />
Teacher Work Sample.<br />
7. The student is to prepare a Teacher Work Sample to be used as evidence of his/her<br />
developing identity as a teacher. This Teacher Work Sample will be evaluated by the<br />
student’s supervising teacher and must be passed be<strong>for</strong>e a final student teaching<br />
grade will be submitted to Registrar’s Office.<br />
8. The student is to apply <strong>for</strong> certification through the Missouri Department of Elementary<br />
and Secondary Education (see DESE Certification section on website). Written requests<br />
<strong>for</strong> official transcripts to be sent to the Missouri Department of Elementary and<br />
Secondary Education must be completed through the Registrar’s Office.<br />
9. The student is to complete the <strong>Student</strong> Evaluation of <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Teaching</strong> <strong>for</strong>m (see HLGU<br />
website) <strong>for</strong> each placement and submit it to his/her university supervisor.
