PROFESSIONAL SEMESTER COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHING ASSISTANTS
1. Student teachers experience a minimum of six weeks of full-time classroom teaching
(three weeks in each seven-week placement or six weeks in fourteen-week placements).
Full time teaching includes total responsibility for the school day including lesson
planning, instruction, classroom management, assessment, and other assigned duties.
2. Students are to maintain an organized notebook/file containing lesson plans, materials
used in teaching, and suggestions made by the cooperating and supervising teachers.
3. Students are to schedule a minimum of two evaluation visits with the college supervisor.
4. Students are to keep a daily reflection journal to assist him/her in developing important
reflection and self-evaluation skills.
5. The student is to write a mock letter to the parents of a student having academic or
behavior difficulty.
6. The student is to video record two of his/her lesson presentations and submit to the
university supervisor a written reflection for both lessons (see HLGU website for
Authorization to Video Record form). These reflections may be included in his/her
Teacher Work Sample.
7. The student is to prepare a Teacher Work Sample to be used as evidence of his/her
developing identity as a teacher. This Teacher Work Sample will be evaluated by the
student’s supervising teacher and must be passed before a final student teaching
grade will be submitted to Registrar’s Office.
8. The student is to apply for certification through the Missouri Department of Elementary
and Secondary Education (see DESE Certification section on website). Written requests
for official transcripts to be sent to the Missouri Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education must be completed through the Registrar’s Office.
9. The student is to complete the Student Evaluation of Student Teaching form (see HLGU
website) for each placement and submit it to his/her university supervisor.
