offshore teams: Lessons from aviation. Paper presented at the 1998 SPE International<br />

Conference on Health, <strong>Safety</strong> <strong>and</strong> Environment <strong>in</strong> Oil <strong>and</strong> Gas Exploration <strong>and</strong><br />

Production. Caracas, Venezuela.<br />

A human factors tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program—Crew Resource Management (CRM) was presented <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong>to offshore <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

CRM is “us<strong>in</strong>g all the available resources—<strong>in</strong>formation, equipment, <strong>and</strong> people—to achieve safe<br />

<strong>and</strong> efficient flight operations”. The teach<strong>in</strong>g methods used <strong>in</strong> CRM tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> aviation <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

lectures, classroom tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, practical exercises, case studies, <strong>and</strong> films. Six core topics were<br />

established through accidents analysis, pilot <strong>in</strong>terviews, <strong>and</strong> observations of flight crews <strong>in</strong><br />

simulators: team work, leadership, situational awareness, decision mak<strong>in</strong>g, communication, <strong>and</strong><br />

personal limitations. Three methods for assess<strong>in</strong>g the outcomes of CRM tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g were discussed,<br />

which <strong>in</strong>clude crew behavior, students’ attitudes, <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> motivation.<br />

The rationale for CRM tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g offshore was given. F<strong>in</strong>ally, two examples <strong>in</strong> which CRM<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g has been used by a major North See Oil company <strong>and</strong> a form of CRM tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g called<br />

Emergency Resource Management tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g were presented.<br />

offshore production <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance. Paper presented at the 1999 Offshore Europe<br />

Conference. Aberdeen, Scotl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Crew Resource Management (CRM), which is widely used <strong>in</strong> aviation, is adapted for offshore<br />

teams. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is delivered over two days, <strong>and</strong> consists of six core topics: situation<br />

awareness, decision mak<strong>in</strong>g, communication, team coord<strong>in</strong>ation, fatigue <strong>and</strong> shiftwork, <strong>and</strong><br />

stress.<br />

The background of CRM <strong>in</strong> aviation <strong>and</strong> the rationale for CRM tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for offshore teams were<br />

provided <strong>in</strong> this article. A prototype offshore CRM course was described. Also, methods of<br />

evaluat<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (crew behavior, participants’ attitudes, <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> motivation), <strong>and</strong><br />

suggestions for improv<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course were identified.<br />
