Tango dancers on every block, dulce de leche (a sweet carmel-ly sauce) served with
just about everything, restaurant dinner rushes that started at 9:00pm, unbelievable natural beauty
and leaving home in early spring to arrive in early autumn – all in only a two hour time change!
These experiences and so much more made our trip to Chile, Argentina and Brazil the adventure
of a lifetime. see page 14
Women Traveling Together ®
A Note from the President
Well ladies, it looks like the word has gotten out! Just take
a look at the number of new WTT members from January
through the end of May listed in this issue of the Travel
Letter and it will leave little doubt that a seismic shift has
occurred. Several independent events have come together
this year. First, the recession has finally loosened its grip
on the psyche of the nation and those with a job feel more
comfortable about making travel plans. Second, women
are now statistically the primary breadwinner giving them
more flexibility to make their own spending decisions than
at any time previously in U.S. history. Third, women are
starting to actively seek solutions to their travel dilemma
of no one to travel with instead of hoping and wishing.
Women Traveling Together is Growing!
Little ripples in a stream can often predict a coming flood,
and that’s the feeling we have had here at WTT for the
past few months. Membership has steadily grown, trips are
filling to capacity faster than ever, signups for our emailed
newsletter are increasingly and the number of “likes” on
our Facebook page is now over 1200. All of these indicators
point to more growth for Women Traveling Together.
What Growth Means for You
Easter Island, January 2013.
You might be wondering to yourself: “What’s this got to do with me” WTT’s growth means more trips to choose from, more
unique destinations, and more departure dates. If you haven’t already looked at the 2014 schedule you’re in for a surprise. There
are over 50 tours scheduled for next year; a 50% increase over 2013!
Growth can have some serious drawbacks if a company is not ready for it, but that’s not the case here. Knowing the personal
touch we give is critically important to Women Traveling Together’s success, we’ve long been preparing for this day to arrive,
knowing for a fact it would arrive. The back end systems we have been building over the last 16 years puts us in a unique position
to handle growth without losing the personal touch we’re so well known for.
There is a downside to all this popularity that affects you as well. With more women looking for travel, and a finite list of tours to
choose from, we anticipate our tours will fill up sooner than before…and that’s even hard for me to imagine. If the preliminary
activity on the first 20 tours posted already for 2014 is any indication, most of our 2014 tours will be sold out before 2013 ends.
We already have several 2014 tours more than ½ full and we have already received reservations for tours 15 months away.
The takeaway here is simple. While the travel opportunities are great, the 18 spaces available on the tour you are eyeing will fill
up faster than ever before. For that reason we will continue to keep you apprised of the spaces remaining as we have always done,
and to count down the final three spaces.
We’re working as quickly as we can to finish posting the 2014 tours and will make each tour available as we finish it–notifying
those with a Pre-Reservation first. I know it’s hard to think about next year when so many of you are still looking forward to your
2013 travel, but it never hurts to take a peek!
Email Scams: How to Avoid
Them by Debra Asberry
Recently I received an email from someone I had not been in
contact with for some time. It read:
I hope you don’t take offense in my sudden approach for
help. We took a trip this week to Limassol, Cyprus and
were attacked and robbed. My belongings including my
cash, credit card and cell phones were all stolen. I’ve
made contact with my bank but the best they can do is
to mail me a new card which will take 7 working days to
arrive here, am currently concluding my documentation at
the embassy so I can fly out. I need you to lend me some
funds to settle some bills. Please let me know if you can
assist me in anyway so I can forward you details to effect
a transfer. Waiting for your mail.
Thanks, Andy
My first reaction was a desire to help. My second reaction
was to wonder if this was legitimate. How could I know for sure
This email is a scam trying to get me to send money, but
even worse than that, the real danger of this email is in answering
it. Scammer software is now sophisticated enough that by
simply hitting “REPLY” will open your computer system up and
your entire email list of friends can be stolen. That’s what happened
to Andy. She opened one of these scam emails, and my
email address fell into the hands of the scammer.
There are all sorts of schemes out there just waiting for
you to hit reply. Some recent examples of emails I’ve received
include “Delivery of Urgent Fed Exp Packages”, “Notification of
Airline Update”, and “Reply for Account Verification.” Remember,
the scammer is betting that your compassion to help a
friend, or your curiosity about a delayed package, will be enough
for you to hit REPLY.
So, how can you protect yourself but still check on your
friend, or find out if you really did miss a Fed Exp package. Here
are some simple rules to follow:
1. Never “REPLY” to any email you are in doubt about.
2. In the case of my email from Andy above, I created a new
email to the email address I have on file for Andy and
asked her if she was in trouble. I wasn’t at all surprised
when she wrote back with “what are you talking about”
3. In the case of the Fed Exp Package, contact Fed Exp
directly and ask if you have a package. They can tell you.
4. In the case of the airline update, contact your airline if
you have an upcoming flight.
5. In every case, be skeptical! It’s the best way to protect
yourself. v
Women Traveling Together ®
Retreating is Food for
Your Soul
by Jennifer Johnson, WTT Communications Director
ebster’s dictionary defines “retreat” as
“an act of withdrawal.” Putting aside
military meanings, the word retreat has
also long had spiritual connotations.
Early in recorded history, many seeking
enlightenment retreated from the
outside world, living alone for years at
a time in isolated places, i.e. hermits.
Later, others retreated to monasteries
and convents seeking closer contact
with their God without the distractions
and temptations of the outside world.
It all sounds very other-worldly and certainly not for your
Average Joe (Josephine). The idea of retreating in today’s
world to connect with nature, the universe, yourself, God or
whatever Higher Power you seek, seems a bit dated, eccentric
almost. After all, we’re not living in the Middle Ages.
However, it is the very facts of life in today’s world–the fast
pace, the stress, the distractions–that makes the concept of
retreating more valid today than ever.
At different times in my life, I’ve thought: “Remind me
again why I’m doing this;” or, “I want to take my life (my
job, relationships) to the next level;” or even just “I’m worn
out. I need a break!” I don’t know about you, but when these
thoughts pop up, I rarely have the time to actually do some
real thinking about them, much less bounce ideas around
with someone else. Everyday responsibilities, pressures and
distractions make it impossible for me to just sit and think–
where I’ve been, where I’m at and where I’d like to go. On
those occasions when I do get a bit of “down time,” I often
spend it dwelling on some immediate issue. In the daily
hustle and bustle, the bigger picture of my life escapes me.
Retreating entered my life almost 20 years ago. I
attended a weekend retreat for engaged couples with my
then husband-to-be. We were there with a group of other
young, engaged couples to discuss and explore, together and
in groups, how marriage would effect our lives. Unfortunately,
then as now, it was hard for me to focus on the bigger
picture. Instead of taking advantage of the opportunities
the retreat offered to grow and learn, I spent the better part
of the weekend thinking about how to keep certain family
members from creating a big scene during the wedding and
reception. In hindsight, it’s not surprising that my marriage
didn’t last long.
Women Traveling Together ®
July 2013 ◆ 5
The topic of retreating
didn’t come up again until I
started working for Women
Traveling Together. The
value of WTT’s all women
tours was apparent to me
but I was a bit surprised
when President Debra
Asberry told me she was
planning to add personal
retreats. Personal retreats
sounded too “New Agey”
to me–not that I shared this
opinion with the boss lady.
Debra then asked me to
attend an informal meeting
where I could meet Karin
Sokel who would be leading
WTT Personal Retreats.
During the meeting,
which included a bag lunch
“Everyday
responsibilities,
pressures & distractions
make it impossible for
me to just sit & think–
where I’ve been,
where I’m at & where
I’d like to go...
In the daily hustle
& bustle, the bigger
picture of my life
escapes me.”
by the creek, Karin explained what retreating was and how it
had impacted her life. We then had a wide ranging conversation
about a variety of topics. Karin asked us what we had
been passionate about as children. Turns out Debra had been
bitten by the travel bug at age 11 after visiting Yellowstone.
Another woman who is now an award-winning professional
copywriter, loved playing word games as a child. I was very
into drawing and painting from kindergarten on and now
work as a graphic artist. Karin shared with us that even as a
girl, she had always been interested in the “big questions” like
“What is my purpose in life” The creek-side meeting was an
enlightening and enjoyable experience–almost like a miniretreat.
That afternoon made me think “Hey, maybe there is
something to this retreat thing after all.”
Years later, I’m convinced of the value of WTT Personal
Retreats and not just because of the consistently solid attendance.
It’s the comments from the participants. Almost
universally, the comments are positive–about the location,
Karin’s leadership and the entire experience. The participants
often comment on the personal rewards of a WTT Retreat:
the benefit of time away from their everyday lives; the opportunity
to learn more about themselves; and, their interaction
with the seemly ordinary but awesome women in the group.
As I continue my life-long struggle to understand the big
picture and not get hung up in the details, a periodic retreat
has become important to my overall quality of life. Time away
from the everyday to consider the bigger questions of life not
only benefits me but everyone around me.
There’s no doubt that those throughout history who
withdrew from the world to contemplate the big questions of
life were onto something. Retreating is not just for hermits.
Retreating is food for my soul. v
Are you living a life that you truly
of our lives are spent in states of
survival. We are so busy and because
and time-wasters. Ultimately, our
intentions and dreams become wishful thinking or we abandon
them altogether. But no more! Retreat from the chaos of life and
search of ancient Mayan cities, canoe through caves and trek
Peru’s Macchu Picchu & Easter Island
Peru is the home to one of the most famed examples of Inca
architecture: Machu Picchu. Believed to have been built in the
mid-15th century, its existence was unknown to the modern
world until it was re-discovered in 1911. We’ll also visit Lima,
mountains to the Inca’s Sacred Valley and capital, Cusco. Then
Women Traveling Together ®
Chile, Argentina & Brazil ~ March 26-April 5, 2013
By Tour Leader Becky Clinton
It’s only a two hour time change from the east coast
of the US to South America, but it was a world upside down for
us. We left home with winter turning to spring and arrived in
Chile where summer was turning into autumn. Our friends and
families were experiencing freezing temperatures while we were
enjoying the warm sun of late summer. The leaves on the lovely
poplar trees were turning golden and pumpkins and Easter eggs
decorated the breakfast table!
In other ways, we felt completely at home. It didn’t take
us long to realize that our group of eleven women reflected the
diversity we found in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. We were a
melting pot of North America; in our band of eleven, at least
four ethnic groups and three of the world’s major religions were
represented. Lasting friendships were made almost instantly as
we shared experiences and stories. As we gathered one morning
for another adventurous day, I overheard a lady say, “I feel like
we’ve known each other forever,” and we all agreed.
Our trip was an ideal mix of big cities, charming coastal
towns and magnificent nature. In Buenos Aires, we attended a
tango show that revealed its history through dance, costumes
and drama and showed us that, in Argentina, tango is more than
a dance. It is a way of life with a culture all its own. The gaucho
appeared and took our breath away with his bolo dance. In Rio
de Janeiro, the dance is samba. It is less dramatic and more free
and easy than the tango which perfectly reflects the differences
in the lifestyles of Argentina and Brazil.
We shopped with the locals at street markets, fish markets,
vegetable markets and antique markets. Each one was a show in
itself with performers of one kind or another. There were tango
dancers at every sidewalk café, excellent Latin guitar duets on
the street corner, fish hawkers and samba dancers.
We tasted fruit that we thought we knew, but a mango
or banana grown locally tastes oh so much sweeter. We ate
fresh seafood in Chile, the world’s best beef in Argentina and
just-caught river fish in Brazil. And how can I talk about food
without mentioning dulce de leche! The sweet carmel-ly sauce
was everywhere...even on the breakfast buffet. We had to keep
reminding ourselves to slow down and savor the conversation
and the food. South Americans place an equal value on both.
Meals are joyful events where lunch begins at 2:00 or 3:00pm
and lasts two hours. No wonder the restaurants don’t open for
dinner until 8:00 and start filling up around 9:30.
We were charmed by the coastal towns of southern Chile
with stunning ocean views, colorful houses and narrow crooked
streets. In Buenos Aires, the quaint neighborhood of San Telmo
reminded us of back streets in Paris, but with a Latin twist.
Angelmo (Fish Market) in Chile.
When we visited Iguazu Falls, we were advised to take rain
gear. We did, but we got soaked anyway! We were so carried
away by the magnificence and grandeur of the falls, we walked
right out to the end of the trail, opened our arms wide and
welcomed the spray. The falls were all around us, even under
our feet as we walked over mesh bridges! And then we walked
another trail where we saw even more falls from a different
viewpoint, and then another trail! We were overcome by the
enormity, power and beauty of the falls. One would think we
couldn’t get closer, but we did on a small boat that took us right
up under the falls. Imagine women drenched by the falls, squealing
with delight, laughing and holding onto their hats and you
have a perfect picture of our group.
We found it easy to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro with its
pristine beaches, Sugar Loaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer
sculpture blessing the city with outstretched arms. We could
hardly believe we were there, walking among these landmarks
recognizable the world over. A walk on the beach with the
waves splashing us and the sun setting behind the beautiful Rio
skyline made us so very grateful for the whole experience. Sitting
beachside, sipping coconut water from a hollowed out shell was
a perfect way to end the day with new friends.
Three countries, eleven friends, one vast continent, memories
to last a lifetime and no jet lag! Now that’s a recipe for a
fabulous vacation! v
Women Traveling Together ®
North Carolina Outer Banks ~ April 14-20, 2013
By Tour Leader Christina Smith
Our journey began by crossing the Oregon Inlet which is
spanned by the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, a 2.7-mile bridge built
in 1963. Prior to this date, ferry service provided the connecting
transportation. Just as we reached the very top of the bridge, we
were greeted by construction workers who brought us to a complete
stop, right at the very top of the bridge! What lucky timing
this was as we were able to watch thousands of cormorants soaring
below us. What a sight.
On Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, we did our best to
see it all. This refuge includes ocean beach, sand dunes, fresh
water ponds, salt flats and salt marsh. Pea Island is home to more
than 365 species of birds, 25 species of mammals, 24 species of
reptiles and 5 species of amphibians. We saw a lot of turtles! We
especially enjoyed climbing the sand dunes to get to the beach
where we collected shells and marveled at the grandeur of the
ocean. Pea Island Volunteer Earl made himself available to answer
our questions and share his stories. His passion for the area
and his commitment to his volunteer position were very evident.
At Cape Hatteras National Seashore, we learned stories of
devastating storms, shipwrecks, moving a lighthouse and making
a movie. Along its rich history, this special location is a pristine
ocean side wilderness that delights the eye and spirit. Sixtythree
percent of the island is Federal Park land that will never
be developed, while another 14 percent belongs to the state and
another 11 percent is wetlands.
We stopped at the original location of the iconic 1870 Cape
Hatteras Lighthouse and then onto its current location some
1,600 feet from the ocean. The lighthouse was moved (imagine
moving it!) in 1999 because it was threatened by ocean waves.
We had another opportunity to wander the beach collecting sea
shells. Some of us were looking forward to climbing to the top
of the lighthouse for the magnificent view. Unfortunately, the
National Park Service was opening the lighthouse for walks on
April 19 and we were there on April 18. Maybe next time…
During our visit to the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station,
we learned about the tragic sinking of ships and triumphant rescues
conducted by the “surf men.” Known as the “Graveyard of
the Atlantic” because of the many shipwrecks, the Outer Banks
feature especially turbulent conditions where the Gulf Stream
meets the Labrador Currents. The Life Saving Station had displays,
artifacts, photographs, exhibits and video presentations to
educate us about the important role the U.S. Life-Saving Service
played in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Site Manager James
provided us with an interruptive presentation which helped to
bring all this history to life. The other Site Manager Linda regaled
us with the story of her experience as an extra in the movie
Built in 1975, the Currituck Lighthouse, unlike the more
famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, was never painted leaving
its original one million bricks exposed. That’s a lot of bricks!
Nights in Rodanthe which was filmed in this area. She is still filled
with enthusiasm about the experience and took us step by step
through her scene with Richard Gere. The original house (like
the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse) was moved from its location due
to the pounding of the ocean surf, but we tracked it down and
made a stop for photos. It is now used as a bed and breakfast.
We also visited the Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island,
Currituck Lighthouse and much more. Despite being a selfproclaimed
“National Park Junkie” this was my first visit to a
National Seashore. I wasn’t disappointed and now have another
stamp for my National Park Service Passport. I have great
memories from our days spent on North Carolina’s Outer Banks
and my 13 wonderful traveling companions. v
Women Traveling Together ®
Australia & New Zealand ~ March 3-17, 2013
By Tour Leader Lida Clinton
Our adventure seeking group left winter in the U.S.
and arrived to summer in New Zealand where so many great
experiences awaited us…
A tour of the Waitomo Glow Worm Cave took us past striking
underground limestone formations. The most intriguing part
of the adventure was a boat ride in complete silence through the
underground river. Our destination was a cavern with millions
of tiny blue/green sparkling lights of glow worms. It was an eerie
yet captivating experience.
At Rotorua, we learned about the agriculture that is so
important to the economy of New Zealand. At a visit to the
Agrodome Sheep Show, we got “up close” to the native sheep.
At Rainbow Springs Nature Park, we were able to see the nocturnal
Kiwi Bird as well as other fish, birds and wildlife native to
the area.
Queenstown was definitely one of our group’s favorite
memories. Queenstown is a beautiful city surrounded by majestic
mountains and nestled on the shores of crystal clear Lake
Wakatipu. Overlooking the Remarkables mountain range, the
town is surrounded by some of the most stunning vistas in the
world.
Since Queenstown is the self-proclaimed adventure capital
of New Zealand, we set off to explore. The group took the
Skyline Gondola CABLE CAR 450 feet up to Bob’s Peak for
spectacular views over Lake Wakatipu. Some of the group tried
the LUGE and zoomed down the mountain. Some of the group
went Jet Boating and experienced high speed water thrills with
360 degree turns. Ziplining was a spectacular and exhilarating
flying adventure through the forest canopy high above Queenstown.
Some of the women tried paragliding off the highest peak
in New Zealand for panoramic views. The water lovers went
Parasailing. A few tried their hand at a Segway while zipping
around the lake. More relaxing activities included a scenic cruise
on Lake Wakatipu with great views of lake and mountains.
Queen Victoria Gardens were a lovely stroll as well.
Then onto Milford Sound, we enjoyed a leisurely cruise
through the World Heritage Fiordland National Park. The cruise
provided excellent views of waterfalls, the rain forest, mountains
and wildlife. Some of the group took a flightseeing tour back to
Queenston and enjoyed spectacular views of fiords and mountain
peaks.
Flying into Cairns, Australia we journeyed to the Rainforestation
for some wildlife encounters including holding koala
bears and interacting with kangeroos, dingos, and other native
Australian wildlife. A Duck Ride (a WWII bus-like vehicle that
Queenstown, New Zealand.
doubles as a boat) took us deep into the rainforest to explore
native vegetation.
The Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia’s most remarkable
nature wonders. The reef contains an abundance of marine
life and hundreds of tropical islands. The reef is larger than the
Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible
from space. From our boat on Michaelmas Cay, our group took
a semi-submersible submarine to view the breathtaking coral
formations and giant clams, turtles, and tropical fish. Some of
our group went diving and snorkeling for further up close and
personal reef experiences. This was a memorable day.
Arriving in Sydney, we got our first view of this beautiful
city. Sydney has boundless attractions and a superb harbor side
location. A harbor cruise captured the essence of the city with
its historic landmarks, beautiful beaches and homes that line the
shore. During a city tour we visited the Rocks area, drove past
the Botanical Gardens, Hyde
Park and to the Sydney Opera
House. A wonderful tour
of the opera house had the
group excited to experience it
further. Several of our group
took advantage of some leisure
time to attend a performance.
Venturing outside of the city,
we visited the Hunter Valley
area for lunch and wine tasting.
We did a candy making
class and brought back lots of
“samples.”
All too soon it was time
to say good-by to Australia
& New Zealand: kiwis and
kangaroos, coral reefs and
rainforests, glacier-capped
mountains, fjords and pristine
beaches and the Sydney
Opera House. We saw and
experienced so much–it was a
truly memorable trip!v
Women Traveling Together ®
China Exploration ~ April 13-27, 2013
By Tour Leader Cille Tyler
It’s been said that the Great Wall is the only work of
man that you can distinctly see from space. In my mind, that
about sums it up. By any measure, China is huge, and the magnitude
of it all – the largest country in population and third largest
in land area – boggles the mind. Yet, after our two week sojourn
there, our group felt satisfied that we had experienced the big
world of China. During that time, we had traveled to Beijing,
Xian, Chengdu, Guilin, Yangshuo, Shanghai, and Suzhou, and
to many other locations.
To me, the only way one can begin to comprehend a country
of 1.4 billion people is to break it down into more manageable
experiences. Our WTT group traveled beyond our personal
cultural comfort zones to actively seek and understand another
way of life – an ancient and unique culture that is fast forwarding
into the 21st century. We balanced our journey of visits to
ancient sites – the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer
Palace, the Great Wall, Terra Cotta Warriors – with present day
experiences – Tai Chi in the park, the Panda Reserve, cooking
and calligraphy lessons, tea ceremonies, acrobatic show, and
savoring the variety of regional cuisines at each stop.
We began in Beijing at Tian’anmen Square, the largest public
plaza in the world, followed by a visit to the Forbidden City,
the world’s largest palace and home to 24 Emperors of the Ming
and Ch’ing dynasties. Along with its beautiful marble bridges
and decorative carvings, the sheer size of the Forbidden City
and its four subcities – outer, inner, imperial, and Forbidden –
amazed us. This imperial experience was balanced by a rickshaw
ride through a traditional neighborhood, a hutong, and a visit
with a family who lives in one of the courtyard homes.
Later, tears came to some eyes as we saw the Great Wall
stretching out before us. Started in the fifth century B.C. with
mortar made of sticky rice and egg whites, the structure has
stood the test of time. We were fortunate to visit a less “touristy”
portion of the wall which made the experience much more
special, and once again we paused to take pictures and attempt
to comprehend the magnitude of it all.
After a lovely visit to a farmer’s home and art studio and the
ancient walled capital city of Xian, we visited the Eighth Wonder
of the World, the Terra Cotta Warriors. The buried warriors
were discovered in 1974 by a farmer digging a well. Begun in
246 B.C., the warriors and their horses were made as part of the
mausoleum of the first emperor of China. Each of the 6000 lifesize
warriors has a different face, many of which belong to the
minority races. Again, we are overwhelmed with the magnitude
(both size and age) of the army of terra cotta soldiers that stood
in military formation and stretched out before us.
Guard tower on the Great Wall.
Definitely the highlight for many was our trip to the Giant
Panda Breeding Research Base in Chengdu. They are so
cute and sheer joy was experienced by the three of our group
who chose to hold a baby panda. The park was a wonderful
respite from the busy cities. Guilin is where we started our Li
River Cruise along the backdrop of the green gumdrop-shaped
mountains reminiscent of those depicted in Chinese scroll paintings.
In Yangshuo, our Chinese cooking lesson yielded great fun
and was no doubt our “best meal” of the trip, if we do say so
ourselves. Most memorable in Shanghai and Suzhou were the
beautiful gardens in full bloom with azaleas, zig zag bridges, and
lovely lotus pools. Accenting our entire trip were opportunities
to shop in the markets and practice our bargaining techniques,
which grew stronger as we progressed through the days.
For each of us it was different, yet also the same, this shared
experience of an ancient culture and a dramatically different
way of life. Looking around affirmed what we already knew – we
were among the lucky few Westerners who have had the opportunity
to experience this rich and ancient culture which is
now catapulting itself into modern times. We came to see the big
sites yet in the end it was our experience of the Chinese people
and their way of life which was the most enriching. We asked
lots of questions and our Chinese guides were always so helpful
and forthcoming. Among the many topics, we learned about the
one child policy started in the 70’s and its current implications,
typical school days, the care of elders, owning condos, and the
rapid growth of cities. As with all travel, we return home with an
increased knowledge of another culture and a further appreciation
of our own. For us, China is not quite so big anymore.v
Despite a visit from Prince Harry, the unexpected
arrival of the President of South Korea and intermittent
rain, we enjoyed many of Washington, D.C.’s well-known
sights as well as getting to experience some of the Capitol’s
lesser known treasures. Each day brought us new
opportunities to learn more not just about U.S. history and
government, but the world.
A drive along the National Mall introduced us to
such iconic sites as The Lincoln Memorial, Washington
Monument, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial – to
name just a few. After a bite to eat at the Old Post Office
Pavilion and quick trip up the elevator to take in the 360
degree view (2nd highest after the Washington Monument)
we were off to the National Museum of American
History. There we saw Old Glory, gowns worn by the First
ladies, the complete kitchen of Julia Child, and Dorothy’s
ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz along with many other
objects that reflect our experience as Americans.
On a leisurely walk around the White House we
stopped for photo ops. Then we made our way over to the
Capitol for a tour of the Visitor Center and then on to a
typical southern style lunch on Capitol Hill.
Hillwood Estate, home of Marjorie Post–the heiriess
to the Post cereal fortune–was a highlight. Post bought
the Washington, D.C. property in 1950 and soon decided
to create a museum to inspire and educate the public.
Hillwood contains the largest collection of Russian
Imperial art outside of Russia (think Fabergé eggs). The
estate’s 25 acres of gardens divided into themed “outdoor
rooms” were all in bloom. President Lincoln’s Cottage was
another high point. Three miles from the White House,
the cottage served as a summer home for the President
and his family and is where Lincoln drafted the Emancipation
Proclamation. We also had the opportunity to visit Mount Vernon, home of George and Martha Washington on the banks of the
Potomac River. The day ended with a walking tour followed by dinner, in Georgetown, the Capitol city’s oldest neighborhood.
We ducked into the National Cathedral to wait out a rain shower and learned a bit about Gothic architecture from gargoyles to
flying buttresses. The sun came out and we were off to Washington’s Embassy Row. The timing of our visit was perfect to attend the
European Unions’ Open House. We watched folk dancing and tried food from different European countries.
With so many world class museums and art galleries in Washington, we spent our last day visiting what interested us most. Each
traveler picked her favorite and we made stops at the Holocaust Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, Freer Gallery
of Art and the National Air and Space Museum. Then it was time to return back to our hotel for our farewell group dinner where we
watched the sunset and dined on fresh seafood.
With so much to see and do, it felt as if one could come back to D.C. over and over and never really feel you had done it all. Returning
to our homes scattered across the country and even the world, we took back a better understanding of how our government
works, what it really means to be an American, and how freedom is never free.v
