One of the things we have enjoyed since we’ve been out here in the countryside
is the view of the night sky. The lack of light pollution means that there
are so many stars and sights to be seen that would otherwise obscured further
towards the towns. I find them mesmerising. Astronomy isn’t for everyone, but
there are times when almost everyone gets excited about some great ‘event’:
a solar eclipse, or a comet you will only see once in your lifetime. We want to
be part of significant moments.
I remember hearing of a US President who would leave an important meeting
to walk outside the White House, look at the stars, and reflect how small he
was in the universe, and how great God was. He would then return to the Oval
Office with a bit more self-awareness. We all need to get some right perspective
at times.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
“For God so loved the world that he sent his only Son so that all who believe in him might
not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
With all the present-buying, food-preparing, peopleorganising
aspect of Christmas, it is so easy to lose perspective
on what it is all about. Christmas is a reminder that
human life exists within a ‘story.’ I don’t mean by that a madeup
story, or just a way of explaining things away. How often
have we heard (or even said ourselves) that ‘Christmas is
really for the children.’ It’s not. The Bible makes a massive
claim. It’s all true. It tells a true story of God. Not any god, but
the God who made and controls all things – from the vastness
of space to the miniscule complexity of the atom. It tells
us how we got here, and why the world is as it is – our own
desire to see ourselves in control and ruling our lives, rather
than the God who made us. And it tells us the story of how a
holy God makes us right with him.
The Christmas ‘story’ is one which is quite simply astonishing.
Not only is there a God, but he sent his Son to become
human (one like us). He lived a perfect sinless life, and then
died on a cross for our sins to be forgiven, and was then
raised to life again. It is in this ‘story’ that Christians find their
meaning and hope. It is this story that we find Christians (as
‘the church’) living out in their own lives:
“For God so loved the world that he sent his only Son so
that all who believe in him might not perish but have eternal
life.” (John 3:16)
Christmas is not just a nice story for children. It is part of
the story – God’s story - that claims to make sense of everything,
including us. For if – if – its claims are true, then surely
it has to be the most significant thing that has ever happened
in the whole of human history? If we even just suspect that it
might be true then we cannot walk away from it without investigating
and testing its claims. Those who have truly done so
have never been left unchanged. Don’t waste this Christmas.
Listen and live the greatest story ever told.
On behalf of the churches of Bucklebury, Bradfield and
Stanford Dingley I wish you and your families a very happy
Christmas. Jules
ut I found out that everyone was selfish,
including me at the end of the day. I
also learnt that loving people led to pain.
I got really disillusioned. I moved on to
using heroin and then ended up doing
crime to fund my habit, which led to a
string of short prison sentences.
“By 29, I had ruined my health and I
was close to death. After a serious pulmonary
embolism and the diagnosis of
severe liver damage, doctors gave me
six months to live if I carried on with my
way of life.
“Back in prison six months later, a
probation officer suggested I try rehab. I
thought that a Christian rehab would be a
softer option so I went to the Red House
in Newark. When that closed down, I was
transferred to Yeldall Manor.
“I was really negative about
Christianity and would argue with anybody
about it. Secretly, I started to
believe it, and would see how they
ought to answer my arguments. I
realised that Jesus really is the Son of
God and that he is utterly on my side.
He offered change from within, which is
what I needed. Eventually, I surrendered
– ‘Lord, I give in.’
“Whilst at Yeldall, I felt that God was
calling me to preach. It was crazy. I was
very shy back then, but I spoke to Bill
Yoder and he advised me to apply to
Bible College.
Why not come along and meet new people,
chat with good friends, and enjoy a warm
atmosphere and good coffee (or tea!)
and I was frustrated that I couldn’t help
them.
“A staff vacancy came up at Yeldall
Manor and in January 1989 I joined the
programme as Team Leader and then
became a Counsellor and later
Programme Manager. I’ve been here
for 21 years and I love it. It’s not just a
community; it’s a family.
“I’ve implemented many changes
over the years and seen the work grow
and develop, so that we now have the
best staff team yet and the best facilities.
“I’m 60 now and maybe getting a bit set
in my ways. There’s a fine line between
being the glue that holds everything
together and the glue that gums things up.
So, after much prayer, I am stepping
aside. Yeldall Manor is at a point where
we can really change and we have a great
staff team; it’s time to let them have their
go. I have total confidence in the staff and
I am sure of this – the best is yet to come.
God leads me next.”
December Gardens
So the clocks have gone back, we
have had the first frost and the leaves
have fallen; do you abandon gardening
for the rest of the winter?... er… yes -
and no. The grass will probably not
need to be cut for a while unless, that is,
we have a very mild winter, so take the
opportunity to get the machine serviced
DECEMBER 2010/JANUARY 2011 5

in order that the cutters are sharp and
the engine starts to your command in
the spring when you really do need to
cut the grass. My friend, who services
my machinery, wishes that he could
charge a premium to make mowers and
the like work in the month of April, as
frustrated gardeners perspire as they
pull vainly on the starting rope during a
busy weekend.
Do also take this opportunity to clean
and, where necessary, sharpen your
garden tools; the secateurs must be
kept quite clean and sparkling bright –
the normal dull colour probably harbours
the disease that you tried to cut
from an earlier plant or shrub.
I think I mentioned pruning apple
trees last year but I will do so again; do
make certain that before you get your
head into the tree, you stand back and
have a good look at all the branches
and shoots. Look to see which branch is
obstructing which branch and where
one branch rubs against another which
one should be taken out for the good of
the tree. The best guide is to think of the
tree as a large wine glass or bowl with
air circulating in the middle.
I do hope you haven’t just burnt your
fallen leaves as they produce the best
soil conditioner within twelve months
that is available; dug into the surface of
the flower bed or vegetable patch,
absolutely nothing can beat this weed
free compost. It may be a bit late to buy
farmyard manure locally but if you can
still get it, it really does make a difference
to the productivity of your land;
manure has the ability to release the
goodness that is naturally in the soil yet
does retain the moisture that plants
need. I did mention, the year before last
(have I really been writing this for that
long!) that I was inclined to ‘double dig’
my vegetable patch thus incorporating
manure at a spit lower than usual and
breaking up the possible ‘pan’ that may
prevent free drainage. Unfortunately my
energy level is on the wane and this
year I have spread the manure on the
surface in the expectation that the
worms will work on both the manure and
the soil and incorporate the two together
– I know that there will be a downside
as the manure will be full of weed seeds
and I will have to turn the soil to bury
them, but nothing in gardening is easy!.
In the last two weeks I have received
my seed catalogue from Suttons and
will shortly order the seeds that I want
and at the same time plan out my garden
year – if you don’t plan or have a
diary plotting the approximate planting
times of seeds you will not get the benefit
of the final product; remember that
seeds are expensive but an individual
cabbage or lettuce may cost the same
as a whole packet of seeds!
If you have a greenhouse this is the
time to really get it clean; clean the glass
in and out and wash the staging to
6 DECEMBER 2010/JANUARY 2011

emove all signs of pest and disease
and finally use a ‘Greenhouse Candle’,
but with great care – read the instructions
creepy crawlies – before you start sowing
A Christmas Carol
Silent Night is one of the world’s
most popular Christmas carols. Every
year it is sung in many different languages
across the world evoking the
spirit of Christmas. Popularly it is said
that the carol was composed in one
night, to be accompanied by a guitar,
because the mice had eaten the organ
bellows! But what is the real history of
this carol?
The carol ‘Stille Nacht! Heilige
Nacht’ was first heard in St. Nicholas
Church in Oberndorf on Christmas Eve
1818. The congregation at Midnight
Mass listened as the assistant pastor,
Father Joseph Mohr, and choir director,
Franz Gruber, sang to the accompaniment
of Father Mohr’s guitar. The priest
had composed the words two years earlier
in 1816 as a six verse poem.
Since then this Christmas carol has
achieved world wide appeal and has
been translated into over 40 languages
including English. It has been sung on a
variety of occasions and in some unexpected
places. On Christmas Day 1918,
during the First World War, German and
Allied armies faced one another in
France. The song was sung simultaneously
in French, English and German by
the troops during a Christmas truce, as
it was one of the few carols that soldiers
on both sides of the front line knew.
So what is the reason for the enduring
popularity of this carol? The simple
words and tune communicate the heart
of the Christmas message. The eternal
God has made himself known, by entering
time and space, in the person of
Jesus Christ. The baby in the manager
is not just fully divine, but he is born as a
real human being. Jesus comes as a
Saviour to rescue us from the mess of
our lives, so that we might share the life
High Street
David Winter, former head of
Religious Broadcasting for the BBC,
thinks back to a certain Christmas past...
Many years ago in Finchley, north
London there was a local Methodist
Church which would offer various inspirational
messages in illuminated lights
to the passers-by on the main road.
Their Christmas one, very appropriately,
was the song of the angels: ‘Glory to
God in the highest’.
Unfortunately some inclement
weather or a simple technical failure put
Administration Office, All Saints’
Church, Broad Lane, Upper Bucklebury
RG7 6QH. You only need to give your
first name and a few details of what you
would like prayer for. No one will contact
you unless you ask. All requests will be
treated in the strictest confidence.
Please note that the Administration
Office hours are Mon - Fri 9.30am - 12.00
noon term time only. An ansaphone
service operates at other times.
out one of the lights. Just as appropriately,
however, it now read, ‘Glory to
God in the high st’. An electrical fault,
perhaps – but how wonderfully true it
was. In fact, nothing could better sum up
the deep meaning of Christmas than
that splendidly distorted message.
Those same angels told the shepherds
in the fields that the ‘sign’ to identify
the special baby to be born that night in
Bethlehem would be that they would find
him ‘lying in a manger’. Well, ‘manger’ is
a fancy word for a simple thing. The truth
is that they would find the infant Son of
God lying in a feeding trough.
10 DECEMBER 2010/JANUARY 2011

At Bethlehem the Creator entered
the Creation. ‘The Word became flesh
and dwelt among us’ - and the ‘Word’,
John’s Gospel tells us, ‘was God’. In
Jesus the divine became human. ‘In him
(Jesus) all the fullness of deity dwells
bodily’, St Paul tells us (Colossians 2:9).
‘Hail the incarnate deity’, we sing - but
it’s hard sometimes to recognise his
identity in the bonny baby in the traditional
crib scene. It’s a pity that the
Christmas story can so easily be sentimentalised,
because in fact this was the
most radical and revolutionary action of
God since the creation itself. God, in
Jesus his Son, actually came among us
- not as a super-being, not even as a
fully grown adult, but as a baby.
‘You will find the baby lying in a feed-
Christmas Carols will be sung through the
Village on Wednesday 22nd December
Starting at the Church Gate at 6.00pm, visiting 4
or 5 houses in the Village until about 6.45pm,
and then at a private house in the Village until
about 8.00pm for mulled wine, figgy pudding,
mince pies, merrymaking and more singing.
Everybody throughout the Parish and beyond is
welcome to join in and to choose your own
favourite carols – song sheets will be provided.
in all the mess and muddle of ordinary
life, in the fun and tears, in the feasting
and the poverty, the glory of God was
seen in a tiny scrap of human flesh. In
that helpless baby God showed how far
he was prepared to go to bring us back
to himself. When God took flesh he did it
properly. Glory to God in the high street!
