WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
March 2011
Paul Hilton, Pictures of England.com
It is time to say goodbye as we prepare to move to Hampshire at the end of
the month and so this is my last Dear Friends column. As a family we have many
good memories of our time living in Bradfield and serving the 6 churches in our
area and we shall in particular remember community and kindness. We have
enjoyed the various communities here and there are many examples of people
coming together to help one another; clubs, groups and commitment to community
projects but also acts of kindness given to stranger and neighbour alike.
David Beckham, it was reported recently, stopped his car and assisted a motorist
broken down in rush hour traffic near London. It is interesting to think why this is
“But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us, not because of
righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.” (Titus 3:4-5a)
newsworthy as plenty of people show kindness and help others
and most of the time no one knows.
Kindness is a common human virtue; we receive it from others
but understand too that it is in our power to give or to withhold.
It is an oil which smoothes out some of the roughness of
life and we do notice when it is absent and, sadly, in our cynical
culture it can be distrusted when shown by strangers.
Weddings are in our minds now as spring and summer get
nearer and the big day for many couples approaches and as
Bride and Groom promise loving commitment to each other
in marriage the words of St Paul may be read out that, “love
is kind…”, along with its many other qualities. Kindness is
able to rejoice in the happiness of others, wishing them well.
Life functions best when we live in an atmosphere of kindness
and we know that this is true when we consider the
harming and souring effect of whatever is unkind.
As with other gifts we feel grateful for thoughtful words
and kindnesses received; they have an effect, kindness is
after all a gift. Maybe you have seen the film ‘Pay it Forward’
which explores how kindness can have a domino effect as
gratitude for kindness received, shows itself in acts of kindness
to strangers?
St. Paul pointed out to an early Christian called Titus and
in his letter to the Romans that when people received the
kindness of God it changed them and life was different after
they received God’s love in Jesus Christ. “Don’t you see how
wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does
this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is
intended to turn you from your sin?”
So, we may be impressed when a famous footballer helps
a stranger, or feel thankful for the kindness shown to us by
others, how do we feel when we realise that God through
Jesus has shown us his love, mercy and his kindness and
that we may know this for ourselves?
Finally, we all thank you for your kindness to us as a family;
we have received so much in our time here and are grateful
and have many happy memories to take with us as we
prepare to leave.
Now imagine their services offered
Mercy Vision
Over a thousand people queued
around the Evangelical Presbyterian
Church on the first day of eye screenings
for the Mercy Ships Field Service in
Togo. Each person had a common purpose
– the hope of restoring or improving
their eyesight. That hope was focused on
the eye clinic operated by the Africa
Mercy volunteer crew and staff.
An estimated 30,000 potential
patients were screened during the 2010
Togo Field Service, with approximately
3,000 scheduled for eye surgery.
Eye screenings were held four times
a week at different locations and
approximately 250 people were
screened each day, with about 10% of
those scheduled for surgery.
Screeners specifically look for several
eye conditions such as cataracts, the
leading cause of blindness in developing
countries. Another eye disease is pterygium,
a non cancerous growth that forms
a layer over the white part of the eye.
Screeners also look for patients who
are experiencing extreme pain or have
deformities of the eye. These patients
will be scheduled for surgery to remove
the eye and replace it with a prosthetic
eye. Sometimes patients cannot be
helped with treatment or surgery, but
they are given the opportunity for counselling
with the Africa Mercy Crew.
The eye team also distributes sunglasses
to protect the eyes of the
patients from the intense African sun
and they distributed 717 pairs in the first
Due to the lack of dental services in
Togo, most people have never seen a
dentist and do not know how to care for
their teeth properly. The dental clinic
addresses this problem in several ways.
Dental screenings are held twice a
week with an average turnout of about
250 potential patients. Dental
Coordinators identify patients with a range
of dental issues from simple cavities to
large, deformity-causing abscesses.
The dental teams work diligently
every day extracting teeth, filling cavities
and even constructing new teeth. It is
estimated that several thousand people
will be seen, most of whom will find relief
from pain for the first time in their lives.
Patients in the waiting area are also
taught how to properly brush and care
for their teeth, and they are given toothbrushes.
Dental and Oral Diseases
in Developing Nations
Many people in developing countries
have never had the privilege of seeing a
dentist. Dental help is almost non-existent
in much of West Africa, and in the other
countries Mercy Ships visits, it is unaffordable
for the majority of the population
Statistics (source: WHO)
• 60-90% of school children worldwide
have dental cavities.
•Severe periodontal (gum) disease,
which may result in tooth loss, is found
in 5-20% of middle-aged adults; the rate
varies across geographical regions.
• 40-50% of people who are HIV-positive
have oral fungal, bacterial or viral
infections, which often occur early in the
course of HIV infection.
•Oral disease is the fourth most
expensive ailment to treat in most
industrialised countries
Bringing Hope and Healing
Mercy Ships aims to prevent and
reduce the effects of a lack of oral health
care by providing dental treatment and
dental hygiene education and training.
Mercy Ships uses hospital ships com-
plemented by mobile dental clinics to
deliver free specialised health care to
the world’s forgotten poor.
New Life for Kossin
Sixteen-year-old, Kossin Delou,
spent four years of his life sheltered by
his family and kept out of the public eye
due to an enormous tumour that dominated
the left side of his face.
When the tumour first appeared,
Kossin visited local hospitals in Lome,
Togo, but his family could not afford the
necessary surgery. So, the tumour,
which started from Kossin’s upper jaw,
continued to grow. It soon covered his
eye, hindering his vision.
As the insidious growth enlarged,
Kossin’s life became more difficult. In
fact, the children who were once his
friends now ridiculed him on the streets
and at school. He even felt like an outsider
amongst his own siblings.
His emotional turmoil intensified as
his dream for his future began to fade
away. Kossin wanted to study at a university
to become a teacher. He wanted
to enrich the lives of children with knowledge
and love. His grotesque facial
deformity would prevent him from pursuing
his education.
MARCH 2010 5

A few weeks ago Kossin came to our
hospital ship, the Africa Mercy, and after
many hours of surgery he emerged with
a newly constructed face.
Kossin is ecstatic about his new life.
He can go to church with his family and
friends, He’s no longer an object of ridicule
and, best of all, in September 2010,
Kossin started school to fulfil his resurrected
dream of becoming a teacher.
Power the Vision
Mercy Ships state-of-the-art hospital
ship, the Africa Mercy, is just coming to
the end of dry-dock work in Durban,
South Africa.
Built in 1980, it had become essential
to replace the onboard power generators
in order to provide the vessel with
a reliable supply of power and enable it
to remain in service.
The new generators will be mounted
in such a way as to cause minimum
vibration, as any vibration transmitted to
the operating theatres could make the
surgeons’ task more difficult.
Currently, all of the old generators
have been removed from the Africa
Mercy, and the four new efficient generators
have been delivered onboard.
The installation of these generators is an
arduous and time consuming task and
the Technical Crew are working diligently
to keep us on schedule at this time.
Senior VP of International Operations,
Jim Paterson, believes the project timeline
is on track. “The shipyard is confident
that we are on schedule for our completion
date” he said.
Other than the project manager and
project supervisors, the Africa Mercy
crew is not working directly on the generator
project. They are, however, providing
ample support for the shipyard
during the project.
There are roughly 80 Mercy Ships
crew members still living on the ship
working simultaneously on other projects.
The ship being in the shipyard created
an opportunity for the crew to repair
areas that cannot normally be worked
on when the hospital is in use. Projects
include replacing the Main Engine
Control System, doing a Main Engine
overhaul and painting in the dining
room. There are also some hospital
modifications being done.
When the project is complete, Mercy
Ships will be able to reduce its fuel consumption
and CO2 emissions by 20%. It
will serve as a substantial cut in annual
fuel costs.
Founder Don Stephens is pleased
with the amount of money that will be
saved, and ensures those savings will
directly benefit patients onboard the
Africa Mercy in the future.
A Surgeon’s Viewpoint
by Lord Ian McColl, Vice Chairman,
Mercy Ships International Board
Over the years I have been involved
in many charities but there has never
been one quite like Mercy Ships, which
allows me to practice my profession of
surgery under ideal circumstances for
people who are in desperate need and
poverty. Not only are the employees of
the charity highly motivated by their
Christian faith but their expertise and the
service which they provide is second to
none. Moreover, all the volunteers
onboard pay for their own food and keep.
During our holidays, my wife and I
operate together on Mercy Ships in a
most pleasant atmosphere with everyone
in the operating theatre one hundred
percent enthusiastic, with a great
sense of humour and professionalism.
During our Easter holiday in The
Gambia, we operated all day, eleven
days in a row, apart from Easter
Sunday, and it was a most exhilarating
experience. Most of the patients are the
outcasts of society, rejected by their
families and the public.
One day Mutala appeared with a
tumour growing from the side of his
head, which was actually the size of his
head; he was sixteen years old and had
been hidden away from society most of
his life. It took nearly twelve hours to
remove this benign tumour, during which
twelve pints of blood were transfused –
donated fresh by members of the crew.
My wife and I count it a great privilege
to work for this unique charity.
March Gardens
One of the worries at this time of year
is a sudden frost. In the months of
December through to February, most
plants and shrubs are dormant and the
‘declared’ hardy varieties can withstand
a good frost, but once the sap starts to
move they become a bit vulnerable. It is
often not possible to give fruit trees sensible
protection as fleece is so light and is
very difficult to erect around them but
one can protect the ‘odd’ branch at a time
when the flowers are just opening and
are most vulnerable – on the principle
that to save a couple of branches and
have fruit on is better than losing the lot.
Seed sowing at this time of year can
be very hit or miss. The essential thing
is to make certain that the soil is warm
and not too wet. It needs to be friable
and easily ‘moved’ by your rake. If you
have a garden frame you should have
no problem in getting seedlings going,
but if you are trying to get some early
‘roots’ (parsnips and carrots) to germinate,
try to cover the ground before you
sow the seeds either with a cloche or
black plastic (though I have found that
mice seem to enjoy running around
under the plastic!).
I was reading the other day that one
of the commonest failures of seeds to
germinate is sowing them too deep;
while they may make the initial effort to
germinate the shoots run out of energy
before they reach the surface. Read the
guide on the packet; if it says sow to ? of
an inch deep it means just cover the
seeds. I also read that the ground
should not be too wet; while the seed
does need moisture to germinate, if the
ground is saturated there is no air and a
living thing needs air to breath.
I am reminded that with the warmer
weather (we hope) weeds seem to be
the first things to get going; give your
self a task to visit a different bit of the
garden each day and remove the first
signs of weed growth – if you don’t they
will be the first into flower and the first to
go to seed making it even harder to get
on top of your garden.
As the daffodils start to go over, feed
them with a foliar feed or sprinkle some
Growmore around the base of the leaves
as this will put goodness back into the
bulb with the added advantage making
the leaves die back more quickly.
If the weather is warm, March is the
right time to plant shallots; don’t push
them into soil as you may damage the
growing ‘plate’ out of which the roots
emerge, just use a trowel and plant them
in good soil so that the top of the shallot
is just poking through the surface and
cover with wire netting or something
similar as the blackbirds will otherwise
remove them thinking they are worms.
Back to sowing seeds – most of us
are impatient gardeners and we want
instant results; remember that it takes
weeks, not days, from sowing the seed
to harvest – for instance it will take at
least eight weeks (two months!) to harvest
a lettuce; so sow and grow your
seeds to a set plan, use a diary and
record when you sow and when you
harvest – it will be an interesting guide
for next year. John Tennant
