A couple of weeks ago, I went to have my
car MOT’d. The waiting room was a bit
chilly, so I went to the car to get my jacket.
As I went outside, suddenly the clouds broke
and the sun shone. I stood there motionless,
as I felt the warm spring sun on my face.
After a long, hard winter, it was a wonderful
feeling. At last, winter was passing. The
feeling of relief and pleasure cost nothing,
but was worth so much.
It has struck me since just how simple life
can – and perhaps should – be. Children, for
example, can find pleasure in the simplest
things. Give a child an expensive toy, and
they’ll probably spend more time playing
with the box. Children laugh more easily,
and can find the silliest things funny.
The more time I spend with children,
especially my own, the more I come to
appreciate just how beautiful a child’s
perspective is. A few weeks ago, I was talking
to my youngest, who is three. My memory is
hazy, but I think I was having a moan about
something. As I finished, she just looked out
the window and pointed, “Look, Daddy. A
Distributed free
May 2010
butterfly.” Sometimes, I wish I could notice
and delight in simple things again,
untarnished by life’s complexity.
There is a beautiful blessing which the
Lord instructs Aaron, the high priest and
Moses’ brother, to give the people of Israel.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord
make his face to shine upon you and be
gracious to you. The Lord turn his face towards
you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)
For the Lord to bless is for him to make his face
‘shine’ upon those who trust in him; that is, his
smile set on those he loves. Just as a beaming
smile warms up a face, so the Lord’s smile warms
those on whom it is set. It is a wonderful image
of God’s Fatherly love for his children.
Christian faith is at heart very simple: turn
away from sinful self-reliance and put your
hope in the living God, who has made
himself known in the life, death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is in essence
to become like a child, resting in the God
who made you, delighting in one single
thing above all others. Have you noticed
how single-minded children can be? That is
what it means to follow Christ, simply
delighting in God; finding one’s hope there
and nowhere else.
When the world tells us that we must accumulate, earn as much money
as possible, have as many holidays as we can, have the latest technology,
to be happy, the Bible shows a different way. To be happy, content,
satisfied, is simply to feel the warmth of God’s smile upon your face, the
pleasure of his delighting in you. The means of this contentment is not
in our achievements, but in the finished work of Jesus on the cross, who
paid the price for our sins, and died in our place.
I hope and pray that you would know that peace with God that the
world can never give, but which we can have through faith in Jesus Christ.
Life in a CAN
Living for Christ is easy in a country which
allows it, but what about places where
missionaries aren’t welcome?
Hi! My name is John Smith – well not really.
Fact is, I’m an OMF worker and I live and work
in what we call CAN, a Creative Access Nation.
In other words, a nation that doesn’t want
Christian missionaries working in the country.
The only way for me to get round this as a
Christian is to go in as a businessman; a real
business man with a real business, real
investments, real employees, real budgets, real
bills and – hopefully someday – real profits.
At the same time, I’m a member of a
missionary organisation, OMF International.
The government where I live and work is
quite happy to do business with me. ‘Religion’
is a blank to be filled in on almost every form
I’ve filled out since entering the country, so
they know I’m Christian. But they respect my
integrity and leave it at that, though they want
me to keep my Christianity to myself.
‘Forget your religion and just do business’ is a
frequent reminder. But I think this is one of
those situations where we should obey God
rather than man (Acts 5:29).
So while I get on with building a successful
business, I also look for opportunities to
advance the kingdom – though not in a way
that’ll get my visa revoked!
Integrity is therefore an important issue for
Christians working in CAN’s. We never tell lies.
If we are asked a question that could get a
At a Glance Diary Dates - May 2010
local brother or sister into trouble, we simply
choose to remain silent. We do all we can to
avoid breaking the law.
In the country where I work, ‘freedom of
religion’ remains part of the Constitution, but
when local officials choose, they can interpret
this to mean any form of Christian witness is a
violation of freedom of religion.
The point officials sometimes make is that
Christian activity is, by definition, something
which imposes itself on people’s rights. (What
governments really mean is that they feel
threatened by Christianity because it represents
a community over which they have no ultimate
control, since believers answer to a higher
authority and are even prepared to die rather
than deny Christ.)
This is a scary thought for members of a non-
Christian regime who believe in giving to
Caesar what is Caesar’s, rather than giving to
God what is God’s. (Mark 12:17)
But since freedom of religion is clearly stated
in my country’s Constitution I work on the
basis that I have the freedom to live out my
faith in the community in which I belong, even
though some officials don’t necessarily uphold
their Constitution themselves!
So I work hard, am careful what I say – and
who I say it to – and try to ensure that I don’t
do anything to compromise my situation, or
that of the believers around me.
Of course it’s not always easy living in a
country that’s keen to have my expertise and
experience, but not my God. Although I’m keen
to initiate an IBCM (indigenous biblical church
movement) right where I live, I know it’s the
last thing the authorities want to happen.
Small wonder then, that since I arrived, I’ve
had frequent visits from secret police. They
turn up in civilian dress but are fairly
conspicuous due to their inordinate interest in
things that none of my neighbours would ever
be interested in.
The man who visited me every week during
my first year here wanted to know everything
about everything. So, as soon as it became
apparent that he wasn’t just being friendly, I
plied him with all kinds of info as soon as he
came through the door.
I told him where I was going, who I was
seeing, how much I was paying for everything I
bought, what I thought about my home
country, and a good deal of other useless
information. The poor man ended up with more
data than he knew what to do with – and that
was before he’d even asked his first question!
At the same time, I worked hard to be his friend.
I asked about his family and invited him to bring
them over for a visit – which he did, once I
assisted my tame ‘spy’ with job applications and
did many other things to help him.
Doing this took some of the tension out of his
frequent and often inconvenient visits and
helped me to see this man as a potential brother
in Christ rather than a time-consuming irritant.
My mail is opened, but I see to it that I only
receive care packages rather than personal
letters at my home address – so it really doesn’t
matter. The people monitoring my mail only
look at it, they never take anything.
I also take it for granted that my phone
conversations are monitored, along with all the
on-line activity. It creates a certain amount of
stress, but I pretend that this is perfectly
normal, and try not to let it bother me!
A few months ago I was speaking with a local
believer who lives under far greater pressure
than I do. He reminded me that if the
government is upset with me it will simply
throw me out of the country. If it gets upset
with him, he will go to prison, or worse.
His simple advice was, ‘Jesus said that we should
let everyone see our light rather than hiding it
away and that is what we should do.’ Good
advice, yes! But the burden for me is how to let
my light shine without doing something unwise
that could create grief for my brothers and sisters.
There are believers in CANs who suffer each
day for the cause of Christ, and although I
know that God can use their tears to work out
his purposes, I don’t want to unnecessarily
contribute to their suffering. So I don’t take my
friend’s advice lightly – I take it very seriously
indeed. ‘Always look at everyone as your
friend,’ he advised me. ‘Consider them safe and
trustworthy. Don’t be guided by cynicism or
fear. Every decision made out of fear is a
wrong decision!’ Wise words.
‘Live Christ before them wholeheartedly,’ he
Christian Aid Week 2010
That is the message for this year’s Christian
Aid Week - 9 to 15 May. What began as the
churches’ response to the horrors of the
refugee crisis in Europe after the Second World
War has become the country’s biggest ‘houseto-house’
collection – with 300,000 volunteers
delivering envelopes and picking them back up
from householders in the week. In all, it raises
more than £9 million a year. If you can help us
in any way this year please visit
May Gardens
I don’t know about you, but I have the greatest
difficulty in getting on top of weeding, there is so
much to do; the great pundits all say use the hoe
at every opportunity to keep the surface soil
‘moving’, thus leaving the seedling to wither on
the surface; that is fine for the annual weeds but
if you chop a dandelion root in half it seems to
come up again with even more vigour and you
may even have two live roots for the price of one!
The use of weed killers needs to be done with
great care as the odd splash of a weed killer,
particularly the systemic kind (the ones that work
through the plants’ growing cells); even a single
droplet on to a single leaf or even the stem of a
plant may affect the strength or life of that plant
as I have found to my cost; a number of years ago
I watered onto the weeds around the base of a
young apple tree a weed killer and thoughtlessly
splashed the lower trunk of the tree; while the tree
was not killed it has greatly retarded its growth
and limited its flowering capacity – it will recover
but what carelessness. Do not use weed killers in
a strong wind as one cannot control the droplets
of the weed killer. It is also worth mentioning
‘selective weed killers’ that are used on lawns
which are designed to kill all plants except grasses
and this includes your flower border plants; so if
you are going to apply a selective weed killer do
make certain that you protect your plants – put
up a barrier while the weed killer dries out. On a
visit to Wisley a little while ago I was reminded
that one really should keep the blades of ones
secateurs clean particularly as one uses them to
remove dead or diseased material from plants or
trees; I have found the answer is to use a bit of
wire wool dipped in white spirit or methylated
spirit and rub it over the blades to keep them
bright, this removes any sap or dead matter –
remember that if you went for surgery you would
expect the hospital tools of the trade to be disease
free. During this month I would expect that you
will be doing a fair amount of planting out of
seedlings- do remember that however wet the soil
may be you must water the seedlings or plants in,
the easiest way to kill a plant off is to leave air
gaps between the new environment and the
plant’s hair roots. Broad beans should be coming
into flower and setting their pods now, don’t be
greedy and try to get too many from each plant;
at about the sixth ‘bean level’ most plants will be
attacked by black fly and if left will take over the
whole plant and take all the goodness from the
bean pods; the only cure, when black fly first
appear, is to pick out the top of the plant. I make
no apology for returning to roses; if you haven’t
fed your rose bushes with a rose fertiliser you
should do so as soon as possible as we expect
them to flower throughout the season without
giving them a real tonic; I will also spray mine
with Rose Clear 3 which prevents mildew and
black spot and keeps the green fly at bay; for good
measure it stimulates leaf growth. May is a good
month to put in supports for your herbaceous
plants; try to use something that can be hidden as
the plant grows such as a square of wire netting
or hazel nut twigs. Lastly I hear that there are
more diseases spreading from the continent
despite our cold winter – the leak moth lays its
eggs in the centre of the plant and the
‘hatchlings’ feed off the centre and kill the plant;
there is no cure only protection with yet more
fleece.
Rushall Organic Farm
John Tennant
In the last couple of weeks everything has
grown in abundance. Our 70 odd cows and calves
were restless with anticipation to eat fresh green
grass after months of silage and straw in their
modest winter housing. It was to my surprise that
my boss, William Cumber, decided to sell our 30
Angus- cross cows with calves at foot. Prices were
high and he was keen to replace them with
Stabiliser heifers to calve next January. A buyer
arrived at the farm making notes and muttering
about a strong trade. I could see he had a keen
eye for stock and glancing at me he observed
shrewdly ”Have you got long to go?” I made it
clear that to my knowledge I wasn’t part of the
deal, or at least not at the moment. So it is going
to be Somerset, not Chalkpit at Englefield for
these fine organic ladies.
We received a letter from Dunbia, the abattoir we
supply near Carmarthen. I quote, “as a valued
supplier to Sainsbury’s” we have been selected to
be “part of Sainsbury’s carbon footprint initiative.
The process is one which could have considerable
benefit to your enterprise both financially and
environmentally”. I look forward to the outcome!
We’ve come to recognise the strange sound of
the Red Kite. They don’t just do Google Earth
without technology but locate lambs if they die in
the field. It’s a handy aid when checking stock.
They also love to prey over freshly cut silage or
hay fields mopping up field mice and shrews
caught up in the vicious knives of tractor mowers.
The growth of creation in May is stunning. You
can stand and watch a field of winter barley
coming into ear. There is a passage in the Bible
which talks about creation groaning, longing for
us to take regard for it as God intended. In May it
feels as though creation is bursting to express
itself with the sheer joy of being alive. The dawn
chorus breaks a night with no regard for the need
for 8 hours sleep. We have a chance to express our
gratitude to God for His provision and ask His
blessing on the land and livestock and the work
we do. This will be on Sunday 9th May at 3pm,
meeting at Rushall Manor and touring the area on
trailers, with tea afterwards. All are welcome, and
thanks to all who joined us at the Lambing Days.
30 May is Trinity Sunday. Many people,
when they think about it all, struggle to
understand the concept of a God that is
Three in One. So the following article by the
Rev Michael Harding may help...
Why your television is like the Trinity
Here is a trick question: How many colours
does your television set use?
Answer: Just three: red, green and blue. And
in that order, just like a rainbow (where reds
are at one side, blues at the opposite side,
green in the middle). This is known as “RGB”.
These are TV’s three primary colours which,
when their luminescence is fired at your eyes,
give all the colours of the visible spectrum. These
are all “additive” colours. In fact, mix these three
together in different proportions, and your
screen can offer you 16 million colours.
You thought the sequence was
red/yellow/blue? No, that’s for painted or
printed colours. A TV set positively gives out
light in three different colours, whereas paint
colour (red, green or blue) even slightly and
you change the overall colour.
Switch them all off, and you are left with black.
Let all three of them shine at full brightness, at
the same point – and then as if by magic you
have a totally different colour: WHITE!
It’s a parable which illustrates the Holy Trinity.
Three completely distinct persons (Father, Son
and Holy Spirit), just as your TV set has three
quite separate colours: red, green, blue.
Take away any One member of the Trinity,
and you slip into theological error; take away
any one of the three colours, and you call out
the TV repair engineer!
So -
It DOES matter that God is our Creator and
Father - otherwise our whole life is merely a
meaningless illusion.
It DOES matter that Jesus is God the Son, for
otherwise his death is simply a human tragedy,
with no promise of salvation or eternal life.
It DOES matter that the Holy Spirit is with us
here and now, otherwise we are disconnected
from God.
Yes it really does matter! Just as it is essential
that a TV set can produce white by the equal
intensity of all of its three colours. In fact, the
more you think about it, the more it seems that
the doctrine of the Trinity is far from being a
complicated bit of theological nonsense, but is
a sort of theological test-card, to make sure
that we’ve got the right picture of God,
without distortion.
S-M-I-L-E – that’s what we do a lot of at
‘Meet Monday’, a Christian group for adults
with learning disabilities. The group meets at All
Saints’ Church, Broad Lane, Upper Bucklebury
on the second and fourth Mondays of the
month at 7.30pm until 9.00pm. Some of our
members come from local homes, others live at
home with their parents or on their own in the
community. We hope to get to know each other
well and offer one another practical and
prayerful support. We worship together; study
the Bible and apply it to real life situations; and
have fun. Drama, craft, dance and puppets are
used as teaching tools and Makaton signing aids
understanding and enhances the worship.
If you know of an adult with a learning
disability who might like to join us, or if you
would be interested in joining our willing
group of helpers, contact Christine Mackie on
Don’t look back
The Sunday school teacher was telling the
story of how when Lot’s wife looked back at
Sodom and Gomorrah, she turned into a pillar
of salt. One youngster nodded in a knowing
fashion. “My mummy looked back once while
she was driving,” he confided, “and she turned
8 MAY 2010
into a lamp post.”
Cathedral attendance up!
In the first eight years of the 21st century,
attendance at the 43 Church of England
Cathedrals increased by almost a third, 31%,
equivalent to a growth of +4% a year. That is in
contrast to church attendance change
generally, which is declining at -2% per annum.
Interestingly, however, Sunday attendance in
Cathedrals is flat – it is the weekday attendance
which has increased significantly. That increase
is seen both in adult and child (under 16)
attendance. As a consequence of these
changes, mid-week attendance is moving from
being about a quarter of the total at the
beginning of the century towards half if
present trends continue to 2010 (27% to 49%).
Why is mid-week attendance increasingly
popular? It is not clear, although the same
pattern is being seen across many churches.
Perhaps people have more time mid-week while
Sundays are often very full, especially if both
partners are working during the week. Perhaps
Cathedrals are putting on more concerts or
other events to attract people; many have
exhibitions of local interest today. Nor is it
known how much of the mid-week increase is
due to casual visitors or an increase in regular,
committed worshippers. Could visitors be
coming for a mid-week service (which is free)
rather than pay for entry to see around?
It used to be thought that Cathedrals were
especially good in drawing in worshippers
whose attendance was often sporadic, giving
them anonymity. This may be less true now
than it used to be. Does the type of Cathedral
worship, with all its beautiful choral music,
amid majestic surroundings, especially draw
people? Not particularly on Sundays, it seems.
We invite you to
It is of course important to look at any increase
in church numbers and take encouragement
from them. Cathedral attendance is a key part of
the totality of Anglican worship, but the overall
numbers are but 2% of the total. There may be
43 Cathedrals but there are 16,000 other
churches! But it may well be that the
attractiveness of the Cathedral’s mid-week
services and activities could be just as powerful
