In July, members of <strong>the</strong> WT community ga<strong>the</strong>red for a<br />
luncheon hosted by Kathy Zilweger Putnam ’71 and her<br />
husband, George Putnam, at <strong>the</strong> Somerset Club in Bos<strong>to</strong>n,<br />
<strong>to</strong> honor Putnam B. McDowell and name him an honorary<br />
alumnus of <strong>Winchester</strong> Thurs<strong>to</strong>n School. McDowell served<br />
as Board President from 1966 <strong>to</strong> 1971 and is also <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r of<br />
four WT alumnae, Margaret (Mouse) McDowell Lofberg ’67,<br />
Lucy McDowell Karys ’68, Barbara McDowell ’69, and Martha<br />
(Murph) McDowell ’73.<br />
The McDowell family ga<strong>the</strong>red with WT trustees, alums,<br />
and Head of School Gary Niels for this special celebration, at<br />
which Niels presented McDowell with a special WT diploma.<br />
Guests included former Head of School Jane Scarborough,<br />
trustee Susan Criep Santa-Cruz ’60, trustee Nancy Scott, and<br />
Susan Harris ’67.<br />
A special video presentation outlined <strong>the</strong> dramatic s<strong>to</strong>ry<br />
that has placed McDowell in <strong>the</strong> WT his<strong>to</strong>ry books as one of<br />
its most significant leaders.<br />
Foresight can be difficult <strong>to</strong> maintain in <strong>the</strong> face of<br />
immediate and formidable challenges. It is a rare and gifted<br />
leader who has <strong>the</strong> ingenuity and tenacity <strong>to</strong> uncover solutions<br />
that resolve such problems while also preserving future<br />
possibilities. At a critical moment in McDowell’s tenure, he was<br />
