RC Makati Rotaractors, Interactors, take part
in RYLA 2012
The Rotary Club of Muntinlupa,
together with the Rotaract Club of
Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa,
hosted this Rotary year’s D-3830 Rotary
Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). Themed
“Rotaryong Kabataan Kaagapay sa Tahimik
na Pamayanan,” the Assembly was held at
the Sitio Lucia Resort in Sta. Maria, Bulacan
last November 10 and 11, 2012.
RYLA is a program sponsored by
Rotarians at the local level in which
young people between the ages of 14
and 30 are selected to attend a leadership
training program. The workshops focus on
leadership and professional development
topics of interest to their specific age
group. The seminars are organized and
run by Rotarians. The workshop theme and
activities differ from year to year.
The participants in this year’s RYLA
from RCM-sponsored Rotary youth clubs
were President Jett Aglipay and IPP
Marisko Sabado of the Rotaract Club
of Makati (RAC Makati) and John Carlo
Castro and Kamile Gonzalez of the
Interact Club of Hen. Pio del Pilar National
High School in Makati.
There were three main speakers. The
first was our very own DGE Robert Kuan
DG Sue Sta Maria
DGE Robert Kuan
By: Jett D. Aglipay, RAC Makati
of RC Makati, who inspired everyone with
his numerous achievements. He explained
how attitude makes a big difference in
one’s professional development and how
someone can stand out by being different.
The second speaker was DG Sue Sta. Maria
of RC Makati Urdaneta. Her inspirational
talk enlightened us on how not to be
discouraged by failure, but instead, use
failure as a spur to continue to pursue your
dreams. AG Jojo Josol of RC Las Pinas West
explained the “Top 20 Reasons Why You Are
in RYLA” and the
meaning of “The
Four Way Test” in his
very fruitful talk.
Moderator
REUBEN VALERIO
Club President
DATO GHAZALI YUSOFF
Guest Speaker
Mau Blardony said a prayer that was
short and sweet: Lord God, he began, “we
firmly believe that You see us and hear us.
We ask forgiveness for the wrongs we’ve
done. We give thanks for all that we have,
our families, our Club, our members, and
the opportunities You have shown us to help
others. We thank You for this gathering, and
the fellowship, to strengthen our friendships
and enrich our lives.”
PP Cesar Campos received a medallion
and certificate from Pres. Reuben Valerio
for his Paul Harris Fellow contribution.
Announcements. The previous week,
Dayal Nandwani passed the hat to raise
some funds for the Stepping Stone Christmas
party. As a gesture of gratitude for the
favorable response, he promised to raffle
off to Club members 24 boxes of cupcakes
baked by SSLC students. He delivered on
his promise last week, pre-selecting names
from a bowl. He asked the winners to pick
up their cakes at the registration desk on
their way out.
On behalf of Ann Lu Limjoco, who,
as immediate past First Ann, chairs this
year’s Last Angel gift-giving project, IPP
Rene Limjoco ticked off the schedule for
the delivery of presents to 474 children
(504 including the 30 school children in
eight sites—Bantay Bata at Makati City Hall,
Marcela Agoncillo Elementary School in
Binondo, Baseco Elementary School at the
Port Area in Manila, Balimbing Elementary
School in Tanay, Pineda Pasig Elementary
School, Asilo de San Vicente de Paul on UN
Avenue in Manila, Brgy. Guadalupe Viejo
at the Barangay Health Center next to our
clubhouse, and Bahay Maria in Bel-Air Village,
Makati.
PP Freddie Borromeo reiterated the
invite to the launch of a feeding program
in Tanay, Rizal on Thursday, 13 th December,
followed by lunch at the famous Tanay
waterfall, with sweet Sangria thrown in. To
complete the day and make the Tanay people
happy, PP Freddie will be handing Last Angel
gifts to the children enrolled in the feeding
program, plus bicycles and books to chosen
beneficiaries. For those who are going: Meet
at Café France in Greenmeadows at 9 AM and
travel northeastward, in convoy, to the site.
Pres. Reuben Valerio reminded
everyone of the Club’s Christmas Party
on Wednesday, 19 th December, at the
McKinley Room of Manila Polo Club, careful
to underscore the date-change from
Tuesday the 18 th to Wednesday the 19 th and
apologizing for the sudden change.
He explained that the 18 th had been
confirmed and the required deposit
of P100,000 paid for (advanced by
him) but because of an apparent
mix-up with the outsource company
handling Polo Club banquets, the
date was moved to the 19 th . He
promised to pay the Polo Club a visit
to get to the bottom of the matter.
He then reiterated the invite to the
party, while reminding everyone to
please bring along their children and
grandchildren to make the party live
up to its tag as “a family affair.”
Dato Ghazali Yusoff, a Malaysian
businessman who is on the Board of
Malaysian Industrial Development
Authority, delivered an account of his
personal journey, from a 13-year stay with
Dunlop Malaysia, to a two-year stint as
group chief executive of the Arab-Malaysian
Bank Group , which he described as the
biggest investment bank in Southeast Asia,
to putting up his own company, Nusantara
Technologies, which services the oil and gas
sector such as petrochemical plants and
refineries. Things are good in Malaysia, he
said, a country where unemployment is an
alien experience, and business is thriving,
largely due to the fact that government
is letting the private sector take the lead
in almost every field. He wondered aloud
why his country, with its 29 M population
and meager resources, is doing well and
the Philippines, which is more richly
blessed, is not. Get your act together, he
advised, change your mindset, change your
educational system to make it relevant to
changing times.
A believer in the potential and promise
of the Philippines, he said he has been
coming to Manila almost every month and
traveling across the country, to explore
joint venture opportunities in a number
of sectors—tourism, medical tourism, oil
and gas, and higher education. A one-time
professor, Ghaz, as PP Joe Alejandro calls
him, is particularly interested in exploring a
collaboration program with two Philippine
institutions of higher learning—the
University of the Philippines and the
University of Santo Tomas.
To those interested in doing business
in his country, he informed that Malaysia
offers tremendous opportunities in many
fields—with foreign investors now allowed
to have majority equity--and is willing to
share. His wrap: “If you wish to do business
in Malaysia, call me.”

building activities and fellowship, scored
by a given point system. The highlight
of the activity was the “Amazing Race,”
an activity that strengthened bonds and
developed planning skills, teamwork,
and friendship among the teams. The last
activity was the “Gallery Walk” which bade
the teams to depict the RYLA theme and
the individual teams’ symbolism through
drawings and collages.
Team Freedom (Blue), to which I
and Team Responsibility (White).
The scores meant little in the face of
a fruitful activity that made every RYLA
participant a champion.
