2 Oscillators 2.3 Negative Resistance Oscillator In this section, a theory of the negative resistance oscillator used in the 8th harmonic oscillator, Gunn diode harmonic oscillator, and coupled push-push oscillator is described. Figure 2.4 shows the canonical RF circuit for a one-port negative resistance oscillator, where Z in = R in + jX in is the input impedance of the active device (e.g., a biased diode). In general, this impedance is current (or voltage) dependent, as well as frequency dependent, which we can indicate by writing Z in (I,ω) = R in (I,ω) + jX in (I,ω). The device is terminated with a passive load impedance, Z L = R L +jX l . Applying Kirchhoff’s voltage law gives (Z L + Z in )I = 0 (2.14) If oscillation is occurring, such that the RF current I is nonzero, then the following conditions must be satisfied: R L + R in ≤ 0 (2.15) X L + X in = 0 (2.16) Since the load is passive, R L > 0 and (2.15) indicates that R in < 0.
