A message from Prime Minister Julia Gillard
It’s remarkable that almost 17 years after
his death, Mick Young is still bringing us
together and bringing out our best.
I know all of you will be remembering
Mick tonight - as a beloved husband and
father, as a colleague, as a mate, while
some like Wayne Swan will be recalling
Mick’s powerful influence as a mentor
and an example of all that is good in
public life.
He was, in truth, all these things and
much more.
But reminiscence and tribal story-telling
aren’t enough to properly honour this
great Australian, and that’s why we join
Mick’s memory with the cause of
education.
Mick Young and education were
inseparable in his lifetime and they remain
inseparable today because education
goes to the very heart of our collective
purpose - that none of us should ever
be defined by our birth, our postcode
or how we look and speak.
Mick Young understood this instinctively
when he assisted financially disadvantaged
students back in Port Adelaide. May our
generosity of spirit in 2013 match his own,
honouring Mick’s life by helping to
transform the lives of others.
The Honourable Julia Gillard MP
Prime Minister of Austrlia

“The Mick Young Scholarships are a splendid symbol of everything Mick stood for – practical,
effective, modest, helping Australians, doing good without fuss or fanfare but with real and
lasting benefits. That was what Mick Young was all about. He lives on through the Mick Young
Scholarships – not just in our hearts and memories but as a living force and example.“
GRAHAM FREUDENBERG

5
A message from Hon Wayne Swan MP
Mick was my mate and the most
important mentor I’ve ever had in my life.
He was an inspirational man of character
– someone who had an understanding
of people and knew the power of plain
speaking and strong beliefs. He was
tough, compassionate, and big-hearted.
Mick’s decency and his values are given
continuing life by the work of the Mick
Young Scholarships, and they lie at the
heart of the Gillard Government – a
Government that shares Mick’s vision
of education as the principal driver of
prosperity and opportunity in our society.
As someone who came to education
comparatively late, Mick Young understood
its unique power to enrich lives
and empower people.
The Mick Young Scholarships have
evolved and grown, and now sit under
the umbrella of the TAFE Directors
Australia’s National Scholarships
Foundation.
It is entirely fitting that Australia’s TAFEs,
which have been central to so much of
our skills development, will now oversee
these valued scholarships.
By donating to the Mick Young
Scholarships you will be helping
Australians of all ages in a very practical
way. It’s been too easy to forget, over the
past two decades of economic growth,
that for so many Australians, just a few
thousand or even a few hundred dollars
towards education costs can help them
make a decision capable of changing
their lives.
This makes your support for the Mick
Young Scholarships a marvellous way to
remember and continue the legacy of a
great Australian.
Thank you so much for being part of
Mick’s mission.
Hon Wayne Swan MP
Deputy Prime Minister
Federal Treasurer

6
Chairman’s Message
This is an historic moment for Australia’s
61 TAFE Institutes, with the launch of
a National Scholarships Foundation,
dedicated to philanthropy for students
at TAFE and beyond.
The Board of ‘TDA’ is delighted to have
embarked on this initiative, at a time of
growing recognition of the place that
skills play in our national economy.
The Foundation will also oversee the
Mick Young Scholarships. To date,
these scholarships have provided
some $1.7 million to 3,000 students.
A total of 19 TAFE Institutes currently
offer Mick Young Scholarships. Under
the National Foundation, we hope to
expand this around Australia.
We also hope to raise $1 million a year
over three years to enable many more
students to gain access to these
sought-after scholarships.
Educational philanthropy in Australia has
mostly been directed to schools and the
university sector.
Tonight marks a new beginning, and
brings both opportunities and challenges
as to how best create a truly national
focus on philanthropy for those choosing
a skills career.
I commend the TDA National Scholarships
Foundation for your support.
Thank you for taking part in this year’s
‘Mick’s Big Night Out’ Dinner, where we
will celebrate the continuation of the Mick
Young Scholarships.
Nicholas Hunt
Chair
ROB CARLTON A recognised face in Australia for both comedy and drama,
his credits span TV, film and theatre. Recently Rob was seen on Paper Giants -
The Birth of Cleo as Kerry Packer. He was nominated for an Australian Academy
Award and a Silver Logie for his performance. 2012 will see Rob as a support lead
in the ABC drama Mabo, in PJ Hogan’s new film Mental starring Toni Collette and
the lead bad guy in the family action Conspiracy 365.
BRYAN DAWE is one of Australia’s finest political satirists. He has enjoyed
a long career on radio; television, film and the speakers’ circuit, with his much
loved characters Sir Murray Rivers QC and Roly Parks. On television he is best
known for his work with fellow satirist, John Clarke, on the ABC 7.30 program
and for his role in the much acclaimed ABC Television series ‘The Games’.
Bryan has also appeared in various films including the hit Australian film
‘The Castle’. He is a long-term advocate of reconciliation between white
and black Australians. Bryan is the inaugural Chair of ‘Common Fate’ which
supports the aims of indigenous elder and the group’s patron, Pat Dodson.
TIM FREEDMAN is the singer and songwriter in The Whitlams. Last century
he won a couple of ARIAs and he continues to tread the boards whenever possible.
PERRY KEYES is a gifted songwriter who, over three albums, has recorded
songs about Sydney’s most marginalised people. Focusing on the inner-city areas
where he grew up, and still lives, his richly detailed songs are both celebrations and
cautionary tales of life on the fringe. Tim Freedman called his 2005 debut album
‘Meter’ “the best Australian album in the last ten years’. Perry’s second album
‘The Last Ghost Train Home’ was ABC Radio National’s ‘Album of the Year’.
His third album, ‘Jonny Ray’s Downtown’ was nominated for an ARIA.
When Alice Springs mother of five FIONA O’LOUGHLIN started doing
her stand-up her hilarious stories of housewifery and motherhood were an
immediate hit. Her first festival show, Fiona And Her Sister (And Some Wierd Guy)
earned her the Best Newcomer Award at Melbourne International Comedy Festival
(MICF). She’s been enjoying sell-out seasons on the festival circuit ever since. In
2006 she took home the Piece of Wood, and MICF award for the funniest show as
voted for by other comics. In 2007 and 2008 she was nominated the MICF’s Barry
Award for Best Show. In more recent years Fiona has overcome a well-documented
‘battle with the bottle’. This, like other aspects of her life, has become ‘material’ for
her stand-up. And Fiona is even funnier sober.

“It’s difficult to find the words to explain
how it feels to have your life turn around
180 degrees, to get right up close to
your dreams and look through that
window. A future, an opportunity you had
so longed for, made real.Young people
can do extraordinary things, all they need
is someone to believe in them and for me
that person was Mick Young.”
WENDY BECKETT, PORT ADELAIDE
for next semester’s fees. As a single
I thank you for this wonderful gift.”
