Twin Thermostat Explanation Engine Start Up Both closed - Both thermostats closed - Coolant flows through water cooled manifold - Coolant heated in exhaust manifold returns to engine - Engine has a very quick warm up time - This results in reduced engine wear and longer life, reduced emissions and more efficient fuel consumption from start up Engine Block Feed to calorifier First open Engine Block Warm - The first (76˚) thermostat opens - Coolant flows to the calorifier - No water flows to the skin tank - Hot water for domestic use is quickly available Return from calorifier Engine Block Feed to skin tank Both open Calorifier Up To Temperature - The second (88˚) thermostat opens - Coolant now flows to the skin tank - Engine cooling balance is fully controlled - Manifold is cooled Return from skin tank 14
