From the College President
Dear Friends in the Community:
I cannot tell you how satisfying it is to ask a group of students what our college’s motto is and to
have them shout back, “Finish what you start!” For Inver Hills, “Finish What You Start” has become
more than our motto. Those words provide us with direction for our most signifi cant work at the college.
Whether we are serving new high school graduates beginning their college journey, adult learners
striving for promotions in their workplace, dislocated workers seeking to retrain, new retirees wanting
to continue to contribute to their communities, or businesses looking for courses and certifi cates to
meet their needs, Inver Hills is there to help them “Finish What They Start.” Even for those that don’t
have a plan, we will help them prepare one.
This year marks my 13th year as the college’s president. During my tenure, the college has transformed
in many ways. Our student population has grown 56% since 2000. We have built Heritage
Hall, our largest classroom building, and added new space and classrooms in our College Center to
support our Access and Opportunity Center of Excellence initiative and Information Technology and
Security program. And, we have just completed work on a new multi-purpose classroom addition to
and remodeling of our Fine Arts Building.
In 2010, we will celebrate our 40th anniversary. As we look back on those forty years, we realize
that at no time in the past has the need for quality affordable higher education and training been more
important. Simply put, a high school diploma is no longer a ticket to a satisfactory career. With that in
mind, we strive to provide the kinds of courses and training to meet the diverse needs of our students
today and into the future.
I have enjoyed working with everyone in our Inver Hills community: our students, faculty, alumni,
staff, and business and foundation partners. Together, we can continue to move the college forward to
help our students achieve their career goals and “Finish What They Start.”
Sincerely,
Dr. Cheryl Frank
Access and Opportunity
Center of Excellence
Those who study higher education policy
know that getting underrepresented students to
a college setting early and often is one way to increase
enrollment of that demographic, but creating
opportunities for junior high and high school
students to have positive college experiences
takes a considerable amount of resources and effort.
To help focus the necessary energy, Inver Hills
has partnered with Century College to create the
Access and Opportunity Center of Excellence.
The Access and Opportunity Center of Excellence
serves as a great bridge to higher education
for those who might otherwise be left behind in
the struggle to achieve the American Dream. Targeted
groups include students who would be the
fi rst in their families to go to college, students of
color, and other underrepresented groups.
In order to help students realize that a college
education is within their reach, the Access and
Opportunity Center initiative focuses on several
different components.
Preparing to Achieve a College Education, or
PACE program, pays for high school juniors and
seniors to take up to 20 credits during summer
months and on Saturdays during the school year.
This past summer 62 students were enrolled in the
program, with an almost 100% success rate.
In addition to free credits, PACE students gain
experience outside the classroom. Students have
the opportunity to visit four-year colleges, area
businesses and participate in career exploratory
workshops.
In the PACE program, family members are
encouraged to attend orientation sessions. Once
they are on campus, these family members are
not only given advice on how to support those in
their family attending college, but are also shown
how they can also register and earn college credits
themselves.
Learning Communities, an existing initiative
Learning Communities
In October, 2009, Minnesota Public Radio
featured Inver Hills’ Learning Communities,
a cohort of students who take two, three or
four classes together. Through integration of
assignments, outside activities, and close contact
with the students, Learning Community instructors
are, according to the MPR report, “reaching out to
students who face academic or fi nancial challenges
before those problems force them to drop out.”
Data from learning communities at Inver Hills
and around the country suggest that students who
6 | www.inverhills.edu | Report to the Community 2009
participate are more likely to have a successful
college experience. Across the board, students
enrolled in learning communities (including
students who are the fi rst in their family to attend
college and other underrepresented students)
show signifi cant increases in retention over their
non-learning community counterparts.
Because of these fi ndings, faculty, counselors,
administrators and staff have worked to increase
the number of Learning Communities being
offered from three in 2006-2007 to sixteen in
2008-2009.
Inver Hills actively reviews its
academic programs and student
service opportunities, initiates change,
builds on successful ideas, and uses
faculty and staff as an engine to drive
improvements in the ways we serve
students.
Service Learning
Next year will mark the fi fth trip Inver Hills
faculty, staff, and students will have made to help
instructor on campus who helps lead the team and
“but they also come away with new skill sets.”
Online Learning
Online programming continues to diversify
and expand at Inver Hills. A new totally online
and Instruction. The program is designed to
prepare educators and trainers to use innovative
learning experience.
In FY09, there were 106 online instructors
increase. In addition, in FY09, 24% of the credits
that students enrolled in at the college were
offered online. The college also has increased webenhanced
offerings by 6.5% over the previous year.
higher education throughout their lives. To
show their appreciation for the benefi ts of a
college education, the Slipkas established the
George A. Slipka Accounting Scholarship for
Inver Hills students. The scholarship covers
tuition, fees, and books for full-time students.
George Slipka, who grew up during the
Depression, learned the importance of saving.
As an accountant for Deluxe Corporation,
Slipka built a portfolio of Deluxe stock that now
provides the basis of his philanthropy.
In addition to all the good work the Slipkas do,
their nephew Ken serves as a member of the
Inver Hills Community College Foundation
Board.
