<strong>The</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Relations</strong> <strong>Program</strong><br />
was <strong>Collegium</strong>’s first program to <strong>in</strong>troduce its core<br />
courses through the medium of the English<br />
language. <strong>International</strong> <strong>Relations</strong><br />
is one of the fastest grow<strong>in</strong>g fields with<strong>in</strong> the social<br />
sciences due to public policy formation at national<br />
level be<strong>in</strong>g dependent on <strong>in</strong>ternational factors<br />
to a degree higher than ever before. Furthermore,<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess, political and non-governmental<br />
organizations have to take <strong>in</strong>to account<br />
the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong>ternational context <strong>in</strong> which<br />
they function. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Program</strong> concentrates on three<br />
areas: Diplomacy, the European Union,<br />
and Strategic Studies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Program</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>es the theory of the basic<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational relations discipl<strong>in</strong>es with a pragmatic<br />
focus. A considerable portion of the <strong>International</strong><br />
<strong>Relations</strong> <strong>Program</strong> is devoted to the development<br />
of analytical skills and practical knowledge of<br />
conduct<strong>in</strong>g debates and negotiations.<br />
Students atta<strong>in</strong> a sound knowledge of history<br />
and of <strong>in</strong>ternational relations theories, and this<br />
knowledge, <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation with rigorous<br />
practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, allows students to apply<br />
<strong>International</strong> <strong>Relations</strong> practices <strong>in</strong> various<br />
professional sett<strong>in</strong>gs, particularly, but not exclusively,<br />
<strong>in</strong> government.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Relations</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> English <strong>Program</strong><br />
Our faculty together with visit<strong>in</strong>g scholars<br />
teach courses on the <strong>International</strong> <strong>Relations</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> English <strong>Program</strong>. <strong>The</strong> faculty <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

at the <strong>Polish</strong> Academy of Sciences;<br />
Professor Mariusz Handzlik, Director<br />
of the <strong>International</strong> <strong>Relations</strong> Bureau<br />

Jan Grabowski, Professor at the University<br />
of Ottawa; Robert Mroziewicz, former <strong>Polish</strong><br />
ambassador to NATO; Henryk Lipszyc,<br />
former <strong>Polish</strong> ambassador to Japan,<br />
and Teresa Rakowska-Harmstone of Harvard<br />
University, former Director of the Institute<br />
of Political Studies at Carleton University.<br />
Among prom<strong>in</strong>ent visit<strong>in</strong>g scholars<br />
who have taught on the <strong>Program</strong><br />
are Professors Haakan Wiberg of the Danish<br />
Institute of <strong>International</strong> Studies, and David<br />
Ewick of Chuo University <strong>in</strong> Tokyo.<br />
Degrees Granted<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Relations</strong> <strong>in</strong> English<br />
<strong>Program</strong> grants Bachelor of Arts and Master<br />
of Arts degrees.<br />

Major Political Science discipl<strong>in</strong>es such as electoral<br />
behaviour, political economy, social welfare,<br />
leadership studies, social change and comparative<br />
government, all require an understand<strong>in</strong>g of state<br />
socialism and post-socialist transition.<br />
For this reason we believe that <strong>in</strong>ternational students<br />
will welcome the opportunity to study Political<br />
Science at <strong>Collegium</strong> <strong>Civitas</strong> as the optimal<br />
way of understand<strong>in</strong>g the complexities of convoluted<br />
transitions to markets and democracy. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Program</strong><br />
also offers a variety of other courses cover<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the most important aspects of this dynamic<br />
and fast-grow<strong>in</strong>g field with<strong>in</strong> social and political<br />
studies. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Program</strong>’s ma<strong>in</strong> focus<br />
is on comparative politics, leadership, globalization<br />
and political communication.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Program</strong>’s faculty has achieved recognition<br />
for its research and teach<strong>in</strong>g. Among those<br />
who teach the program are dist<strong>in</strong>guished<br />
scholars such as Professors Hans-Dieter<br />
Kl<strong>in</strong>gemann, Włodzimierz Wesołowski,<br />
Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński, Hubert Izdebski,<br />
Dariusz Stola, Paweł Machcewicz and Bohdan<br />
Szklarski. An <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g number of visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
professors from the US and other countries<br />
give talks and deliver lectures with<strong>in</strong><br />
the program.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Political Science<br />
<strong>in</strong> English <strong>Program</strong><br />
to the various empirical and practical issues<br />
which have arisen dur<strong>in</strong>g the political<br />
transformation and European Union<br />
enlargement processes. <strong>Collegium</strong> <strong>Civitas</strong><br />
students may also choose electives<br />
from English language programs offered<br />
by the Department of Psychology<br />
of Warsaw University.<br />
