The International Relations in Polish Program - Collegium Civitas

The International Relations Program
was Collegium’s first program to introduce its core
courses through the medium of the English
language. International Relations
is one of the fastest growing fields within the social
sciences due to public policy formation at national
level being dependent on international factors
to a degree higher than ever before. Furthermore,
business, political and non-governmental
organizations have to take into account
the increasingly international context in which
they function. The Program concentrates on three
areas: Diplomacy, the European Union,
and Strategic Studies.
The Program combines the theory of the basic
international relations disciplines with a pragmatic
focus. A considerable portion of the International
Relations Program is devoted to the development
of analytical skills and practical knowledge of
conducting debates and negotiations.
Students attain a sound knowledge of history
and of international relations theories, and this
knowledge, in combination with rigorous
practical training, allows students to apply
International Relations practices in various
professional settings, particularly, but not exclusively,
in government.
The International Relations
in English Program
Our faculty together with visiting scholars
teach courses on the International Relations
in English Program. The faculty includes
Professor Władysław Czapliński, Director
of the Institute of Legal Studies
at the Polish Academy of Sciences;
Professor Mariusz Handzlik, Director
of the International Relations Bureau
of the President of the Republic of Poland;
Jan Grabowski, Professor at the University
of Ottawa; Robert Mroziewicz, former Polish
ambassador to NATO; Henryk Lipszyc,
former Polish ambassador to Japan,
and Teresa Rakowska-Harmstone of Harvard
University, former Director of the Institute
of Political Studies at Carleton University.
Among prominent visiting scholars
who have taught on the Program
are Professors Haakan Wiberg of the Danish
Institute of International Studies, and David
Ewick of Chuo University in Tokyo.
Degrees Granted
The International Relations in English
Program grants Bachelor of Arts and Master
of Arts degrees.

Candidates for the Program must meet
Collegium’s general admission
requirements (see page 24
or www.collegium.edu.pl/english).
In addition, proof of English proficiency

Major Political Science disciplines such as electoral
behaviour, political economy, social welfare,
leadership studies, social change and comparative
government, all require an understanding of state
socialism and post-socialist transition.
For this reason we believe that international students
will welcome the opportunity to study Political
Science at Collegium Civitas as the optimal
way of understanding the complexities of convoluted
transitions to markets and democracy. The Program
also offers a variety of other courses covering
the most important aspects of this dynamic
and fast-growing field within social and political
studies. The Program’s main focus
is on comparative politics, leadership, globalization
and political communication.
The Program’s faculty has achieved recognition
for its research and teaching. Among those
who teach the program are distinguished
scholars such as Professors Hans-Dieter
Klingemann, Włodzimierz Wesołowski,
Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński, Hubert Izdebski,
Dariusz Stola, Paweł Machcewicz and Bohdan
Szklarski. An increasing number of visiting
professors from the US and other countries
give talks and deliver lectures within
the program.
The Political Science
in English Program
to the various empirical and practical issues
which have arisen during the political
transformation and European Union
enlargement processes. Collegium Civitas
students may also choose electives
from English language programs offered
by the Department of Psychology
of Warsaw University.
Degrees Granted
The Political Science in English Program
grants Bachelor of Arts and Master
of Arts degrees.
