Grade 8 Information Booklet 3 4 Grade 8 Information Booklet CALENDAR Week of January 14-18 January 31 st February 4 th February 12 th February February 18 th – 22 nd March 14 th April 1 st or 9 th Mountain visits Langley Meadows and Willoughby Elementary Mr. Costello (counselor) and Ms. Tomlinson (Vice-Principal) along with a group of grade 8 student ambassadors will be visiting grade 7 classes to prepare them for Grade 7 Day and for the transition to high school. Grade 7 Day. Grade 7’s from Langley Meadows Elementary and Willoughby Elementary come to R.E. Mountain. Bus picks up at Langley Meadows at 9:00 a.m. and from Willoughby at 9:15 a.m. Students board bus to return at 1:20 p.m. Lunch is provided. Students should bring a pen and paper. International Baccalaureate Parent Information Night at the School Board Office, 7:00 p.m. Everything you want to know about our university preparation program and all of the pre IB honours classes in grades 8 to 10. Grade 7 Student/Parent Night 7:00 p.m. at R.E. Mountain. Everything you need to know about our programs, athletics, services and registration. Mr. Costello to visit Willoughby Elementary and Langley Meadows Elementary to do course registration. Exact dates to be scheduled. Buddy Day visits for Cross-boundary students to be arranged by appointment. Please contact Mr. Costello (Counsellor) Deadline for registration and course selection. Grade 8 Honours Placement Exam 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. in the library. Bring a couple of pencils, and a well-rested mind. Calculators are not permitted. May 2 nd Grade 7 Indoor Track Meet for all of next year’s Grade 8’s from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. in the gym. Transportation will be arranged by Mountain for feeder schools only. September 2 nd First day of school. Grade 8’s only attend. 12 noon BBQ 1:00-2:30 p.m. Grade 8 student orientation GENERAL INFORMATION SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY R.E. Mountain Secondary School is a “learning-centered” school. Our main purposes are: •To help students acquire knowledge and skills •To help students develop specific personal abilities, and, •To help students mature into healthy, responsible citizens R.E. Mountain is intentionally a conservative school. The educational experience is intended to be high quality and purposeful. Five all too brief years here should be challenging and should produce a lifetime of memories. “GIVENS” “GIVENS” are a set of consistent expectations for all of our students, designed to ensure academic success and a positive experience. Academic “GIVENS” are taught in all grade 8 classes. They are reinforced and emphasized in grade 9 and grade 10 classes. Social “GIVENS” apply to all who work and study at R.E. Mountain. Academic Givens: 1. Binders & Organization: a. Each course section must: i. begin with a blue divider page; ii. followed by a Course Outline page and a Learning Outcomes page. b. Binders must be organized as per teacher instructions. c. Students are expected to keep a record of topics discussed, assignments, tests, etc., either in their Agenda or on a Journal page. 2. Agenda: a. Students are expected to: i. bring their Agenda to every class to enhance time management and school/home communication; ii. enter names and phone numbers on the Student Contact page; iii. have their Hall Pass/Agenda signed whenever out of class.
Grade 8 Information Booklet 5 6 Grade 8 Information Booklet 3. Punctuality: a. Students are expected to: i. be in class by the start bell; ii. have books and materials ready to start each lesson. 4. Assignments: a. Each assignment must be: i. labeled with name, date, block and course; ii neatly presented to ensure that it will be accepted on time for marking. Social Givens: 1. Language: a. All students and staff have: i. the right to be talked to (or referred to) in a respectful manner. ii. And the responsibility to talk to (or refer to) others respectfully. b. It is never acceptable to use: i. vulgar language ii. put-downs iii. offensive descriptions of anyone 2. Behaviour: a. Students should at all times: i. Respect personal boundaries in a public place. Every individual has the right to be physically safe, and to feel emotionally safe, at school, as well as on the way to and from school. ii. Even in jest, it is always unacceptable to hit, trip, push or engage in horseplay. iii. Conflicts are expected to be solved maturely and either privately, or with the help of a counselor, staff member, or peer counselor. iv. Fighting, intimidating and threatening behaviours will not be tolerated; inciting others to fight is equally unacceptable. v. Students at school should not behave as if they are out on a date. There should be no inappropriate displays of affection. 3. Dress: a. Clothes and adornments should: i. promote a positive self-image; ii. iii. not be disruptive nor a distracting influence to others; not display anything exploitative (i.e. sexual), discriminatory, or that promotes illegal substances (i.e. alcohol, drugs, and/or drug-related paraphernalia). b. Specifically: i) backs and stomachs should be covered ii) tops and blouses should be modest, i.e. no low-cut tops iii) straps on tops should be at least 3 finger-widths iv) boys should not wear muscle shirts v) underwear should not be showing 4. Environment: a. Lockers reflect our school image and should: i. contribute to a positive working environment; ii. not be defaced by graffiti, or offensive pictures; iii. be kept organized; iv. be properly cleaned, maintained at all times of the year. b. Lockers should be: i. utilized in such a way that they are always ready to a staff inspection without notice. The use of lockers is a privilege, not a right. ii. School hallways, the cafeteria, and other non-instructional areas of the school also reflect our school image. c. It is expected that students will: i. use these areas in such a way that instills pride in our school and contributes to a positive school image; ii. iii. Clean up after themselves. Use garbage and recycle containers in all areas of the school. EXPECTATIONS FOR BEHAVIOUR It is expected that students will conduct themselves in a respectful, committed way – consistent with the policies and the values of the school. Expectations for appropriate behaviour apply when the student is at school, on the way to or from school, and at all functions related to the school. ATTENDANCE Students are expected to be in attendance and on time for every scheduled class. If it is impossible to be in attendance due to illness, for example, the office must be informed by either a phone call or note from the parent or legal guardian. Students leaving school during the day must sign out at the office before leaving. {A note explaining the absence should be brought to each teacher.}
