It would be a fair assumption that 

Sturt coach, Seamus Maloney, 

will be drilling into his players the 

importance of being switched on 

at the start of every contest. Last 

week against the 'Dogs, giving up 

a seven goal to nil opening term 

proved a gap too large to bridge, 

despite playing some pretty good 

football after the first change. 

The first placed Bloods enter tomorrow’s 

clash at Envestra Park 

with the knowledge that they still 

can improve on the performance 

from last week that netted a hard 

fought 15 point win. One hurdle 

the visitors are faced with will be 

the statistics. Prior to the Round 

5 victory West had over Sturt last 

season, last year’s runners-up 

had not won at Unley since season 

2000. 

The Double Blues were well 

served last week by their AFL 

listed players, with four of the five 

leading stats winners on the Adelaide 

Crow's list. Veteran midfielder 

Luke Crane has finally got 

the body right, and played his 

best game for a couple of seasons 

against the 'Dogs. While 

youngster James Battersby impressed, 

running with another 

Crow's player in Ian Callinan at 

times last week. 

West were made to work for their 

win against the Magpies and 

were well served by their solid 

midfield brigade. Chris Schmidt, 

Ben MacReadie and Travis Tuck 

are in great touch for West, and 

the possible match ups with Sturt 

on-ballers Aiden Riley, Luke 

Crane and Brodie Martin will be a

telling factor as to which side can 

get the ball inside attacking fifty 

the most. 

In attack, Matthew Duldig kicked 

four majors, all in the 2nd quarter, 

last week and is having a 

good season again, but could 

find himself being closely 

checked by State full back, Joel 

Tippett, should he return from 

groin soreness. Duldig needs 

help in attack and fan favourite, 

Ziggy Vitkunas, will need to lift 

his output. He will be better 

suited to the smaller space of 

Evensta Park. 

Good sides win ugly and West 

can now do this, proving the 

point last week. Despite some 

key players still missing from 

their line-up, the Bloods have 

shown an improved depth can 

suspensions but still keep the 

side competitive. The likes of 

James Ezard and Shane Birss 

should return to the side this 

week, making their midfield depth 

even stronger. 

The home side will have their 

work cut out for them but have 

proven, in patches, that they can 

play some exciting, free-flowing 

football. With a good mix of AFL 

players, experienced players and 

exciting youngsters, Sturt are not 

without a chance in this clash, 

but they will certainly need to address 

the concentration aspect of 

their game, particularly over four 

quarters. Despite a terrible record 

at Unley in the last decade, 

the visitors should be too strong 

tomorrow.

The ladder leading Bloods take 

on consistent cellar dweller over 

the past three years, Sturt, at Envestra 

Park (Unley Oval). 

If Andy Collins and West decide 

to play aggressive attacking football 

this could be a white wash. 

Their ball use and depth of midfield 

talent are among the best in 

the league. 

Sturt have some talent, but rely 

too heavily on their AFL players 

to be competitive. 

West at their best are currently a 

class above the Double Blues. 

West by 53 points.

ABC TV viewers got another look 

at the best and worst of the Double 

Blues all within one half of 

footy. How can you get a consistent 

form line through that 

The Bloods are usually the best 

starters in the League, but 

started flat against the Magpies 

last week. This gave West a 

challenge which they proved up 

to, grinding out a tough win that 

left them alone atop the League 

ladder. 

West do struggle at Unley, but 

did win at the ground last year. 


PANEL PREDICTIONS 

such a result would prove to be a 

win for Seamus Maloney and his 

group, having struggled to tick 

that box so far this season. 

While Sturt showed plenty of 

character in recovering from a 

dismal start to fight their way 

back into the match against the 

Bulldogs last week, it is lapses in 

endeavour and commitment right 

from the opening bounce like that 

which will hurt any side time and 

time again. 

The Bloods had a different fight 

of their own against the Magpies 

and will be searching to unleash 

on a side which they will certainly 

pay respect to, but at the same 

time be looking to send a statement 

against.

Westies will enter this game a 

deserved favourite, but will want 

to be on their guard against a 

side that showed glimpses of real 

ability last week against the Bulldogs. 

Sturt may have lost in the end, 

but their second quarter comeback 

after trailing by seven goals 

at quarter time was a fantastic 

performance. 

However they will need to play 

the full four quarters against the 

ladder leading Bloods, if they are 

to be a chance. Sturt will give it 

a shake, but in the end West will 

have too many options.

The SANFL’s poor record in Foxtel Cup games 

continued when 2012 Premiers Norwood went 

goalless in the second half to lose to East Fremantle 

by 7 points at AAMI Stadium. 

With constant rain throughout the contest Norwood 

started the stronger but kicked just one goal after 

the first break. 

SANFL clubs are now 1-3 against WAFL clubs in 

this competition with West Adelaide are the only 

local club left in contention this year 

The highlight was the effort of junior Peter Bampton 

who collected 19 disposals with one goal. 

Simon Phillips looked to have reinjured a shoulder 

in the second quarter but resumed action after the 

half time break. 

Former North Adelaide rover Rory O’brien was 

best for the Sharks with 22 possessions.

Werribee (VFL) were bridesmaids in many ways 

last year, losing the VFL prelim final to eventual 

premier Geelong by 5 points and also ending up 

runners up to Claremont in last years Foxtel Cup 

competition. 

Along the way they scored a Foxtel Cup record 

high 23.9 (165) in downing the Burnie Dockers by 

a record. 133 points. The also beat West Perth & 

Morningside 

They gained entry to the 2013 Foxtel Cup when 

VFL premier Geelong declined to participate. 

Queanbeyan were NEAFL East Champions last 

year before losing to the Brisbane Lions Reserves 

in the NEAFL Grand Final. 

They became the first side from NSW /NEAFL 

East to win a Foxtel Cup game downing the NT 

Thunder by 53 points in April. 

The winner will play East Fremantle in the first 

semi final on Tuesday July 9th at a venue to be 

decided.
