JOHN NANKIVELL’S PREVIEW 

West Adelaide will be desperate 

to atone for their first loss of the 

season when they host Glenelg 

under lights at City Mazda Stadium 

on Friday night. The Tigers 

on the other hand are coming 

off a strong win over the 

Double Blues last Saturday night 

at the Bay. Interestingly this will 

be both clubs' fourth night game 

this season. Glenelg also 

played a twilight game against 

the Panthers back in Round 

One. 

The Bloods will receive a huge 

boost with the return of captain, 

Ryan Ferguson, and star onballer, 

Chris Schmidt, both were 

absent from last week's loss to 

the Redlegs. Schmidt has the 

potential to be the dominant 

midfielder on the ground. While 

Ryan Ferguson can be a dominant 

player at either end of the 

park. Glenelg will have their 

work cut out just stopping the 

influence of these two. 

As has been often mentioned, 

Glenelg have been boosted 

strongly this season by their AFL 

contingent. Jarryd Lyons in particular 

has been very strong, 

and you imagine would be high 

up in Magarey votes at this 

stage of the season. He gets 

valuable support from the likes 

of another AFL listed player in 

Tom Logan, as well as Andrew 

Bradley, Ryan McInerney, Dylan 

McNeil and youngster Sam Underwood. 

The Bays have no 

shortage of talent and the 

Bloods will have to be wary of 

this. 

Both sides have strong forward 

lines, though West Adelaide do 

like to share their goal kicking 

around. The Bloods will be keen 

to atone for a fortnight of low 

scores, and the likes of Jon 

Beech, Tom Keough and Daniel 

Webb will be out to rectify this. 

Last week the Bays were ably 

led by Crow listed, Shaun 

McKernan, who kicked five 

goals. Given the season ending 

knee injury suffered by Taylor 

Walker last week, it will be interesting 

to see if McKernan gets 

an AFL call up. If he does the 

Bays still have plenty of other 

scoring options in the likes of 

Josh Trembath and Lewis 

Hender. 

Glenelg have won three of their 

last four matches over West and 

are in good form. That being 

said, despite their loss to Norwood 

last week West Adelaide 

are one of the best two sides in 

the competition, and with the 

likes of James Ezard, Ben 

Macreadie, Chris Schmidt and 

co. in the midfield should be too 

strong for the Tigers.

off its first loss West Adelaide

Friday night game at City Mazda

If the Bloods play the same style 

as they did in the opening three 

rounds, they will win comfortably. 

This will be helped with the expected 

return of skipper, Ryan 

Ferguson, and vice captain, 

Chris Schmidt. 

Quelling the talents like Taite 

Silverlock and Riverland lad, 

Jono Beech, will also be critical 

for Kris Massie and the Glenelg 

coaching staff. 

Still, West have able talent 

through the middle of the ground 

with Ben Macreadie, Shane 

Birss, Aaron Fielke and 2009 

Magarey Medallist James Ezard. 

Their Bays opponents including 

former Blood Jason Davenport, 

out of form skipper Ty Allen and 

young gun Andrew Bradley will 

need to stand up. 

The Bloods should grab win 

number five in this contest.

Glenelg has won three of the 

last four head to head, with the 

last four meetings at Richmond 

split with two wins each. 

Having blown up the scoreboard 

in their first three games, Westies 

are suddenly finding it hard 

to kick goals. Whilst Glenelg are 

back on the road after two 

straight night wins at home. 

Bloods should be stronger with 

the return of Schmidt and Ferguson 

and are hard to beat at City 

Mazda.

NORTH v NORWOOD

This tantalising, stand-alone 

Saturday afternoon clash at 

Prospect Oval is poised to be an 

intriguing battle, between two of 

the form teams of the competition 

right now. 

The Roosters are coming off a 

pretty comfortable victory on the 

road against South Adelaide and 

currently sit in third position, with 

a 3 -1 win / loss record. Norwood, 

sitting on top of the ladder 

with a 4 -1 record, got the job 

done against the Bloods, back 

on ANZAC Day. Both sides 

clearly look to be amongst the 

best three in the League, based 

on what we have seen so far. 

North Adelaide coach, Josh 

Francou, will be keeping a close 

eye on AFL selections this 

week, with the Roosters a 

chance to lose key forward 

Lewis Johnston to Adelaide – a 

possible replacement for Taylor 

Walker – and in form midfielder 

A n d r e w M o o r e t o t h e 

Power. Those potential losses 

would be a blow to North, but 

they do seem to have the depth 

to cover them. 

Redlegs coach, Nathan Bassett 

– coming off a $5,000 fine for his 

involvement in the ANZAC Day 

scuffle – will need to find a suitable 

replacement for Jace Bode, 

who was sanctioned with three 

games on the sidelines, for striking 

West coach Andy Collins in 

the afore mentioned incident at 

Coopers Stadium last Thursday.

on the outcome of this contest. 

In the Rooster's forward 

line, former Norwood player 

Tom Langford is relishing his 

new environment, and proving to 

be a difficult match up for opposition 

defenders. Alex Georgiou 

is likely to get the job on his old 

team-mate. 

Down the other end of the 

ground, another former Redleg 

player, Will Dalwood, may get 

the big task of manning up on 

one of the SANFL’s nicest guys 

in Ben Warren. Current acting 

co-captain, Todd Miles, looks 

the likeliest of match-ups for 

Matthew Panos, who started to 

show some good signs, particularly 

in the second half, in the 

win over West Adelaide last 

week. 

There will be some great 

clashes through the midfield with 

North’s Max Thring, Joe Anderson, 

Nathan Gordon and Andrew 

Moore - if he plays - up 

against the likes of Brett Zorzi, 

Craig Evans, Mitch Grigg and 

Bob Quinn Medallist, Mat Suckling, 

from Norwood. Most 

games are won or lost through 

the middle of the ground. This 

should certainly be the case in 

this contest. 

Both sides are likely to play a 

loose m an behind the 

ball, playing that sweeping, 

quarter back role. George 

Thring has been doing it very 

well for the Roosters, while 

Redleg's skipper, Kieran 

McGuinness, looks to be taking 

that role up again after making a 

successful return from a knee 

reconstruction. A lot of forward 

thrusts, for both sides, will be set 

up by these playmakers. 

This one is a real toss-of-thecoin 

job but something is pushing 

me towards the home side, 

just. 

North by 4 points 

On the field, there are some 

possible match ups that will not 

only be exciting to watch, but 

may also have a major influence

between two vastly different 

styles. Josh Francou has the 

Roosters playing exciting exhilarating 

football. Perhaps currently 

the best to watch in the 

SANFL. 

The defensive style of play by 

Nathan Bassett garnered the 

Redlegs a flag last year. 

Both teams have an abundance 

of quality footballers, with each 

having good targets in attack. 

Norwood will be looking 

for big games from Ben Warren 

and Brady Dawe, while Lewis 

Johnston (if not called up to replace 

Taylor Walker at the 

Crows) and Daniel Stewart are 

keys for North. 

Nathan Gordon in a one-on-one 

clash with Mat Suckling could be 

a show stopper.

This Sunday game at Alberton is 

already “last chance saloon” 

stuff for both clubs . Central District 

are coming off a bye and 

should have beaten the Bays, 

but faded badly in the final quarter 

of their night match at Gliderol 

Stadium. 

Frustratingly for coach Roy 

Laird, a couple of errors from 

senior players in the final quarter 

were critical as well. 

Interestingly the Bulldogs 

had two big goal kicking 

hauls in the reserves from 

Tommy Dunne and Dallas 

Hill, which will make the night 

at the selection table interesting. 

Co-captain Brad Symes 

should also return after injury 

to add ball winning ability to 

the midfield. 

Both clubs have strong defensive 

groups and this may 

play a role in the result. 

Andrew Hayes will play his

Needless to say, it's a massive 

clash for both sides down at 

Oval Avenue on Sunday afternoon, 

when the Eagles play host 

to the Panthers in what has the 

potential to be a real shootout 

between the competitions two 

leading goal kickers, Michael 

Wundke (South) and Andrew 

Ainger (former South!). 

The latter has been in fine form 

since departing Noarlunga and 

would certainly like nothing more 

than to remind his old club of the 

damage he can do. While the 

former was solid as usual slotting 

four majors in the loss to the 

Roosters. 

The Eagles were in 

dazzling form last 

week against the 

Magpies and will be 

looking to continue 

that form on in front 

of their home 

crowd, who are enjoying 

a vastly different 

start to season 

2013 than that 

of 2012. 

On the other hand 

though, the South 

Adelaide faithful 

are having to endure 

another season 

of sufferance at 

present, and will be 

looking to produce 

some more of their 

away match magic 

on the vast open 

spaces of Maughan 

Thiem Hyundai 

Oval. 

South will need to be more accountable 

than they have been 

though, allowing North Adelaide 

to get too much uncontested ball 

last week - and if there is a recurrence 

of that, then the Eagles 

will swoop with their runners and 

possess the artillery to finish that 

off with scoreboard pressure as 

well. 

So while the battle of the key 

forwards at opposite ends will be 

intriguing, the war will be won 

and lost with the midfield and 

running players, which are critical 

to taking control of a match 

at this ground. 

The Panthers have their usual 

workhorses of Cross, Stribling, 

Liddle and co, but the Eagles 

are starting to build on their renown 

players, with the likes of 

Jarred Allmond starting to find 

some real form and applying the 

type of pressure which can dismantle 

Ron Fuller's engine 

room. 

It is sure to be an entertaining 

match, but even with South Adelaide's 

ability to spring surprise 

wins against the tide, still favour 

the Eagles to prevail.

The Eagles have continued to 

grow since their Round Two 

demolition by the Bloods. They 

got the job done against the 

Magpies, with players like Matt 

Goldsworthy and Angus Rowntree 

growing as leaders. Craig 

Parry, along with fellow senior 

players like skipper, Luke Powell 

and Luke Jarrad have been in 

good form. There are hints of 

2011 about how this side is developing. 

The first thing Ron Fuller must 

do is restore some confidence in 

his troops. There is talent and 

strength in ruck, along with a 

goal target in attack. 

Woodville West Torrens should 

drive another nail into the Panther's 

season 2013 coffin.

off and flying, a stark contrast to 

what they went through last season. 

The best news for South is that 

they are back on the road, an 

experience they seem to find 

more successful than playing at 

home. 

South won last year at Woodville 

with Eagles claiming the previous 

seven at the ground.

SEA-SIDE MOUSE TRAP 

Former Carlton, West Adelaide, Glenelg and North 

Adelaide midfielder Brett Backwell last week was 

involved with a local radio stations broadcast of 

the Glenelg v Sturt game. Slotting in very well in 

the Special Comments role, the former Magarey 

Medallist and current South midfield coach made 

the most of his on-air time. 

During a play involving Glenelg ruckman Lachy 

Button, Mouse gave great insight about the fact 

that Lachy could be a potential mature-age draft 

pick at the end of the year. He also mentioned that 

‘Butts’ was renting a place from Backwell in the 

neighbouring seas-side suburb of Glenelg North. 

After making that comment, Mouse went on to say 

that “he was late in paying the rent”, which was all 

tongue in cheek, of course. 

RUMBLE IN THE TUNNEL 

There has been much publicity about the welldocumented 

incident involving West coach Andy 

Collins and Norwood mentor Nathan Bassett at the 

half time break of the recent ANZAC Day clash at 

Coopers Stadium. After getting back page coverage 

from the Advertiser and a story ran by one of 

the commercial TV networks, the SANFL investigated 

the matter further. 

After citing the two coaches and Norwood player 

Jace Bode were all charged and due to face the 

SANFL tribunal earlier in the week. In what turned 

out to be a mammoth 3 hour hearing, Bassett and 

Collins copped financial penalties ($2K and $5K 

respectively) for their parts in the ugly incident, 

while Bode, a former Sturt defender, was given a 3 

match suspension for striking Collins.
