PRESIDENT'S ANNUAL REPORT 

The past season saw a bitter/sweet ending. After 

experiencing our best on field result since 2003 

in making the SANFL Grand Final, which was an 

outstanding effort by our coaches and players, 

our off field position continued to deteriorate. We 

have tried to analyse the reasons why and have 

come up with several theories, none of which 

really help solve the problem. Hopefully you can 

appreciate that it is often too late during the year 

to make adjustments along the way because of 

existing contractual obligations. 

The costs of running an SANFL club, in particular in 

the past five years or so, have continued to escalate 

at a greater rate than the income derived from 

operations, attendances, sponsorship etc. etc. It 

has been exacerbated by the fragile economy and 

the close attention to discretionary spending by 

both individuals and sponsors alike. Your Board 

has decided that it is certainly well overdue and 

now time to make many major adjustments to its 

overheads in both the football and administration 

areas of the club to ensure the 2013 budget is 

cash positive and we can start reducing debt and 

paying back loans over the next few years. We 

must get this club model back to a sustainable 

level to satisfy our members, bankers, auditors, 

suppliers and the SANFL Commission. 

It is extremely difficult to make these adjustments 

without impacting on both the playing and admin 

performances in the future, but we have tried 

to restructure the best we can with the financial 

constraints that exist, to continue to remain competitive 

on the field and still offer the services necessary in the 

licensed club for our members and supporters. 

All years have their challenges but 2012 has 

been extremely difficult in many facets. Without 

a reliable, loyal and supportive Board these 

challenges would be impossible to meet. I 

would like to say that I appreciate all the extra 

time that has been committed this year by our 

Board members who are all volunteers and have 

families, but who have stepped up to the plate for 

the many additional meetings necessary to run 

your club as efficiently as possible. 

I wish to acknowledge the ongoing commitment 

of our CEO, Kym Russell, who has had to deal with 

an enormous variety of tasks as a result of the 

absence of staff through various reasons plus all 

the office and licensed club personnel for their 

efforts during testing times. 

Our Head Coach Andy Collins and his team 

of coaches need a special mention for their 

committed and outstanding effort during what I 

consider a successful on field season for the club. 

Missing out on a Premiership hurt them deeply, 

as it did all of us and Andrew is determined to try 

and go one better in 2013. We must not overlook 

the fact that it took Norwood three years in the 

finals to finally achieve their goal and Andrew 

believes we are not too far behind them. 

Thankyou to the Football Department staff, 

support staff and of course the wonderful 

volunteers who always dedicate themselves 

and sacrifice a lot of their valuable time to help 

out each season. Many of them spend long late 

hours at the club to perform their tasks in a most 

diligent way. 

Special thanks must go to all our sponsors,

the Club. 

My personal thanks and appreciation must also go 

to our coterie group, the Westonians, in particular 

Westonians President Graeme Barton and his hard 

working committee for their invaluable support 

of our Club. They not only continued to make 

another substantial financial contribution this 

year, but also upgraded their Westonian lounge 

which looks refreshed and is a credit to them. 

A special thank you must go to our Club Historian 

Mark Beswick, for the enormous time he devotes 

to our Club. His meticulous research and accuracy 

with information is second to none and is 

appreciated by all. 

The condition and presentation of the oval 

continues to be one of the best in the league 

thanks to the City of West Torrens. To Mayor John 

Trainer, CEO Terry Buss, Councillors and staff 

(particularly the groundsman) we extend our 

sincere gratitude for the continued support you 

have given West Adelaide Football Club. 

We would also like to thank our other Community 

partners, Mission Australia, Western Futures and 

the Woods Panthers Netball Club for their support 

and hope we can continue to develop these 

relationships further in the years to come. 

Thanks once again to the Riverland Football 

League officials, Executive Officer Wendy Krueger, 

President Neil Martinson and the RFL Commission 

plus the SANFL Regional Director Ian Sutton. 

I would like to also acknowledge President of 

the Far North Football League Barry Mitchell 

and Secretary Bev Zeptner. Many thanks also to 

President Leighton Huxtable, who has retired 

from this position after many years, and Secretary 

Lou Boughen from the Mallee Football League 

and President Craig Worman and Chris Leahy from 

the Southern Football League for their support 

and assistance during another busy year. 

To all our members and supporters, thank you for 

your continuing loyalty. We need you to remain 

loyal, attend our games and support the club 

in whatever way possible as we endeavour to 

achieve the ultimate result.

CEO REPORT 

From a football perspective the 2012 season 

exceeded our expectations resulting in the Club 

competing in the finals in all grades, however 

our on field success did not translate to our off 

field success. The Club again failed to achieve its 

financial targets which has resulted in the Club 

recording a combined trading loss of $505,027 

after depreciation of $218,000. 

I mentioned in the 2011 Annual Report the 

Club was aware of its financial obligations and 

responsibilities and we had budgeted for a 

consolidated trading profit in 2012. Unfortunately 

by the time we were aware that we wouldn’t 

achieve our revenue targets, we were unable 

to reduce our expenditure by a corresponding 

amount due to the commitments and contracts 

we were locked into. 

The 2013 budget has been prepared on an 

extremely conservative basis in regards to our 

income assumptions to ensure there is a cash 

surplus and we are able to start reducing our 

debt. As a result we have had to make significant 

expenditure cuts in all departments to ensure we 

have a sustainable business model going forward. 

Whilst we are disappointed with the end financial 

result, there were still a number of positives to be 

gained and I report to the Members on the operations 

of the West Adelaide Football Club for 2012. 

Football 

As reported in the Football Operations Report, 

the Club had its most successful season since 

2003, with all three grades competing in the finals 

and the senior side playing in the Grand Final. 

Congratulations must go to Andrew Collins and 

his team of coaches, medical staff and support 

staff for the outstanding effort they have made 

over the year. The challenge for 2013 is to repeat 

this performance.

Best and Fairest 

Kaiden Brand – AFL draft to Hawthorn Football Club 

The Club continues to develop our junior players 

through our Elite Development Program, Youth 

Participation Program and relationship’s with 

our metropolitan and country clubs within our 

promotional zones. Thank you to Andrew Marks, 

Brad Fisher, Daniel Joyce and all the coaches who 

have helped run these successful programs. 

Rod Harwood has done a fantastic job in 

preparing City Mazda Stadium for match days 

and his commitment and dedication to ensure 

a first class playing environment is very much 

appreciated. 

Finally thank you to Mark Mickan for his 

contribution and commitment to the football 

program over the past 12 months. We are 

disappointed that Mark has chosen not to 

continue but understand his reasons and wish 

him and his family all the best for the future. 

Football Operations 

Despite having our most successful season in 10 

years, our home match attendances decreased 

by 21.5% or 6,090 compared to the previous year 

and significantly greater than the SANFL average 

of a 11.0% reduction. The decrease in home 

match attendances had a significant impact on 

our match day catering revenue. In addition the 

spend per head of patrons attending our home 

games was down 3.5% on the previous year. 

Changes to the SANFL regulations regarding the 

contracting of players in 2012 were always going 

to test the Club in regards to its list management. 

Unfortunately the assumptions we used, which 

based on historical evidence were considered 

reasonable at the time, proved to be incorrect 

resulting in the Club breaching the Salary Cap. 

We apologise to the SANFL and our members for 

the occurrence and have changed the method in 

which we contract players. I would like to thank 

the players for the sacrifices they have made to 

ensure such a situation will not occur again. 

Marketing 

Membership numbers, both adult (1,756) and 

junior (1,845) increased by 4% and 0.1% respectively 

on the prior year. The challenge is to continue to 

grow our membership. 

Our sponsorship base continued to grow and was 

up 2% on the previous year.

particular our Major Sponsor, Adelaide Galvanising 

Industries (Tony and Lyn Grantham and Stuart and 

Pam Nunn who have provided marvellous support), 

our Oval Naming Rights Sponsor, City Mazda and 

U/18 Centre of Excellence Sponsor, SCF Group. 

Considering the state of the economy we were 

well supported in our fundraising activities 

throughout the year with both the gala auction 

and pre-season player auction raising more 

revenue than in previous years. Competing in the 

finals enabled the Club to hold extra functions at 

AAMI Stadium which were well attended. 

One particular highlight of the year was the 

reunion of our 1947 Premiership players and I 

would personally like to thank Merv Agars and 

Colin Brown for their attendance. 

The Club continues to invest in its communication 

channels and is adapting to the current trends 

of electronic communication and social media. 

Whilst we understand some members prefer the 

traditional methods of communication we need 

to be mindful of the costs of these methods. 

Our Westonians coterie group raised just over 

$40,000 throughout the year and their continued 

support is much appreciated. 

The West Adelaide Football Club Past Players & 

Officials continues to grow and will continue to focus 

on reuniting past players and officials with the Club. 

Special thanks must also go to Angela Jacka, 

Marketing Manager, Stephanie Riese, Marketing 

and Communications Officer and Amie Mittiga, 

Office Assistant, for all their hard work and efforts 

throughout the year.

CEO REPORT 

Licensed Club 

Revenue from our licensed club operations was 

well down on our budget expectations and also 

down on the previous year. 

Bar trade was down 2.3% on budget and flat 

compared to the previous year. Margins were 

down on both budget and the prior year resulting 

in lower than expected revenue. Our expenditure 

was in line with budget expectations and up 

slightly (1%) on the previous year. The continued 

trend to off-premise alcohol consumption will 

place further pressure on the contribution our 

licensed bar provides the Club. 

Gaming turnover was down 5.4% on the previous 

year and 5.7% down on budget. Unfortunately 

our NGR (Net Gaming Revenue) rate was down 

as well on both the prior year and budget further 

impacting our net revenue. Industry advice is we 

need to invest in our gaming room however we 

need to balance this investment with spending 

in our football department to ensure we field a 

competitive side. 

Our bistro operations were a real financial and 

resources burden on the Club last year with high 

staff turnover, poor quality food and service at 

times. Following a review in the early part of the 

year the Club sought to out source the bistro and 

kitchen operations. Greg McKeever and Heather 

Holmes, previous operators of the bistro, have 

taken over the operations of the bistro where 

we have seen an immediate improvement in the 

quality of the offerings and service. We now need 

our members to get behind Greg and Heather 

and support the Bistro. 

Danielle Milligan and Gina Cimarosti have been 

outstanding in maintaining the profitability of the 

function centre in tough economic times where many 

companies are re-considering how to do business. 

The function centre has noticed a significant swing 

from corporate customers to individuals. This trend 

is expected to continue as business reconsiders it 

discretionary spending patterns. 

Community and People 

I would like to thank the City of West Torrens 

Council for its continued support of the West 

Adelaide Football Club, and Mission Australia, 

Western Futures and the Woods Panthers Netball 

Club for their support. We look forward to further 

developing our Community Partner relationships. 

To all our volunteers both in the football and fundraising 

areas, your efforts are very much appreciated 

and I hope we get the success you deserve. 

I thank all members for their support and urge you 

all to re-sign for 2013. I would like to challenge all 

members to encourage fans and supporters as 

well as those that have been members in the past, 

to sign up for 2013 as well. 

Finally, to the Board of the Club, led by Paul 

Sperling, I thank you for your support and 

commitment throughout the year. Over the past 

couple of years the foundations have been laid to 

ensure the long term success of the Club.

FOOTBALL OPERATIONS REPORT 

League 

2012 saw the West Adelaide Football Club 

have its most successful season in almost 

a decade. With the SANFL being a fierce 

competition, beating every team in the 

league at least once throughout the full 

season was a great achievement in itself and 

playing in a grand final for the first time since 

2003 was an even greater accomplishment 

for the Club. 

Our league side won two finals with high 

quality performances against Central District 

and North Adelaide and did enough to 

rightfully claim a position as the second best 

team in the SANFL. With 18 wins and two 

losses during the minor round, Norwood was 

the best team throughout the season and 

maintained that status throughout the finals. 

With success comes extra scrutiny from 

opposition clubs and to maintain a level of 

high quality football throughout the season 

is a credit to Senior Coach, Andrew Collins, 

his team and his staff. Clearly our aim is to 

go one better in 2013 and the senior coach 

and players have commenced a preseason 

program with that as the focus. 

Each new season brings change and the 

end of the 2012 season saw Scott Blesing 

and Marc Borholm looking to further their 

football opportunities with other SANFL 

clubs. Nat and Fort Caruso have returned to 

where it all began with the Northern Saints 

in Victoria to coach and play, while Ben 

Fisher after 100 games and a standout year 

has retired. Brad Fisher and Ryan Willits 

have both returned home to Melbourne 

seeking work and playing opportunities 

in the football industry. The West Adelaide 

Football Club acknowledges the efforts of 

all of these players and their significant 

contributions during their time with us 

and wish them the very best for their 

future endeavours. 

Looking forward to the 2013 season, 

the acquisition of Travis Tuck and Brad 

Mangan are huge bonuses for our club. 

Travis, a 20 game player for Hawthorn, 

played for Werribee in 2011 and 2012 and 

is a big bodied, tough midfielder who will 

add strength and fierce competition to our 

midfield combination. He has impressed 

with his strong work ethic and willingness 

to be involved in the working culture of 

the Bloods. 

Brad Mangan is a delisted North Melbourne 

Rookie who also played for Werribee in 

2012. Brad is a big bodied 21 year old at 

191cm and 95kg. His speed, mobility and 

versatility as a player makes him capable of 

playing numerous roles in our line up. 

Daniel Webb will join us full time after being 

delisted as a rookie with Port Adelaide Power. 

Daniel’s football progressed significantly 

during 2012 and his aerial presence and 

competitiveness was missed due to injury in 

the finals. 

Ryan Anderson returns to the Club after a 

year of country football. He adds speed and 

penetration with his run and carry and his 

preseason training has been most impressive. 

Another player to watch for in 2013 is Jarryd 

Hill who comes highly recommended from 

Cove. Jarryd is a strongly built, competitive 

20 year old midfielder who is keen to give 

football at SANFL level a real go. It’s early 

days but he has impressed at this stage of 

the preseason. 

2012 was filled with outstanding achievements, 

with Kaiden Brand being drafted 

to Hawthorn’s list. This achievement is a 

great credit to the dedication of Kaiden, his 

family and his coaches, in particular WAFC 

Centre of Excellence Coach, Jarrod Meers. 

Well done to our outstanding skipper Ryan 

Ferguson for winning his 3rd WAFC Steve 

Hamra Medal as WAFC’s Best and Fairest 

player in 5 years. 

Chris Schmidt and Daniel Caire thoroughly 

deserved state selection in 2012. Both 

played high quality football in South 

Australia’s victory over Western Australia. 

Reserves 

Our Club’s policy is very much about 

development when it comes to football at 

reserves level and below. Ben Watkins is an 

outstanding coach and the efforts of his 

support coaches and his team led them to 

two finals with a very young group indeed. 

Ben’s ability to communicate the message of 

what it takes to play football at an elite level 

and to introduce young players to higher 

levels of football is exceptional. The efforts 

of this group makes 2013 a very exciting 

prospect for many of the young players 

who experienced the excitement of the 

environment Ben has developed. The West 

Adelaide Football Club would also like to 

congratulations Josh Schiller on winning the 

Bob Lee Memorial Award for Reserves Best 

and Fairest player. 

Centre of Excellence 

With high standards and expectations in 

regards to development and competing 

in finals, it was mission accomplished for 

our Under 18’s Coach, Jarrod Meers and 

his excellent support coaches. Many of our 

under 16’s and under 18’s had outstanding 

performances in 2012 leading them to 

experience football at a higher level. 

The Club would like to congratulate Ryan 

Dijksman who won every possible individual 

award a player of his age could expect to win, 

including the Jake Watson Memorial Medal 

for WAFC Under 18 Best and Fairest player, 

the Knott/Mitchell Memorial Scholarship, 

the Under 18 McCallum Tomkins Medal and 

also recognised as the Under 18’s Macca’s 

Cup MVP. Ryan is a wonderful team player 

and he is one of many talented youngsters

who will add excitement to the playing 

environment at West Adelaide next year. 

Damien Salievic and his support coaches 

extracted every bit of possible development 

from his group and they will be very well 

placed going forward. 

WAFC Talent Development Manager, 

Andrew Marks and COE Performance 

Manager Brad Fisher offered outstanding 

support to their respective programs and 

they have attracted some exceptional 

football talent and fostered its development 

in a very professional manner. 

Women’s Football 

In 2012 the West Adelaide Football Club 

embraced women’s football, Australia’s 

fastest growing sport. The Bloods Women’s 

Team under the coaching of WAFC Talent 

Manager, Andrew Marks, won the premiership 

in their debut year in the Bloods colours. 

Co-Captain Cass Hartley won the Dutschke 

Medal for the best player in the competition. 

Congratulations to all concerned.

In what was a very successful and 

progressive year for our Club, there are 

many people to thank at all levels. Firstly we 

would like to thank the coaches and support 

coaches of the highest order for all their 

support given to the Club that contributed 

to the overall success of 2013. Secondly 

we would like to thank the property staff, 

training staff, medical support team, fitness 

coaches, statisticians and time keepers 

who were totally committed and provided 

great service in their respective areas. The 

Club would also like to thank the players 

from every level for their hard work and 

commitment in making 2012 such a 

progressive year. Lastly to our Members and 

supporters, we thank you for supporting the 

Bloods and look forward to going one better 

in 2013.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT MANAGERS REPORT 

The 2012 season once again highlighted the 

fantastic talent of the West Adelaide Football 

Club, throughout both the metropolitan and 

country zones. 

well as Team Manager, Grant Lovelock, who did 

a great job with the boys and has also assisted 

in the continuing growth of the Primary School 

Football Competition. 

Our Elite Development Program (EDP) was 

held during the April school holidays and had 

approximately 48 talented footballers in the 

under 13, 14 and 15 age groups on show at City 

Mazda Stadium. These young footballers were 

mentored by league players and coaches who 

educated them on nutrition, hydration and fitness 

and gave them an opportunity to meet with some 

of our AFL listed players and discuss the skills 

needed to play football at an elite level. 

The EDP provides a great opportunity for our zoned 

players to meet players from the SANFL club they 

will join if they continue to develop their football 

skills. The EDP is a way of highlighting the pathway 

our talented juniors need to work through from 

under 16’s, to under 18’s and into senior football. 

The under 15’s program concluded with the July 

State Championships, with the boys participating 

in matches on consecutive days. This provided a 

tough challenge for the boys and they all worked 

extremely hard in the program. 

Our under 15’s metropolitan side, coached by David 

Fairlie, secured one victory while also highlighting 

talent and giving us great signs for the future. Our 

under 15’s country side, coached by Gary Irvine, 

played off in the Grand Final and in a hard fought 

tussle went down to North Adelaide. 

Some outstanding achievements from the year 

included Aaron Ferraro, Will Snelling, Jaydn Brind and 

Aaron Francis all making the State Under 15’s Squad, 

with Aaron Francis also gaining All-Australian selection. 

Hugh Haysman, along with Will Snelling and Aaron 

Ferraro all played a game at under 18’s level. 

This is a very exciting group and we look forward 

to making up the under 16’s side with these young 

talented footballers in the 2013 season. 

Our under 16’s performed above expectations 

playing exciting football all year with highlights 

including a 3 point win from behind against 

Norwood during the April school holidays. 

Outstanding efforts from coaches Damian 

Salievic, Shane Moon, Kym Laube and Craig 

Bahnisch all contributed to this great season as 

Brett Turner, Jesse Watchman and Sam Durdin 

made the National AFL U16 Championships SA 

Team and a number of our under 16 boys were 

asked to be a part of our under 18 squad. Jesse 

and Sam have since been selected as part of 

the AIS AFL Scholarship Squad, which will be a 

wonderful experience for them both. 

The under 18’s finished in 5th position with an 

outstanding season and had a number of players 

progress into senior ranks. The side was coached 

by Jarrod Meers with assistance from Shane Pill, 

Glen Little and Dave Reynolds. These boys had 

many highlights and saw Kaiden Brand, Nathan 

Brown and Ollie Johnson play in the National 

Championships. Throughout the season there 

were some great performances from Mason 

Middleton, Mitch Roberts, Tom Schott and Nick 

Favretto and our congratulations go to Ryan 

Dijksman on winning the Tomkins Mccallum 

Medal for best player in the SANFL Under 18’s 

Maccas Cup Competition. With another year 

of the under 18’s to go, Ryan has an extremely 

exciting future in front of him. 

There have been a number of changes in our 

under 18 program and before the season started 

we said farewell to past player and a long term 

coach, Greg Mellor, who took up the position of 

Development Coach at the Richmond Football 

Club. We are all very excited for Greg and see it 

as a sign that our programs are developing great 

players and coaches. 

At the end of the season we said farewell to Brad 

Fisher who worked as the Under 18 Performance 

Manager alongside of his playing commitments. 

Brad did an outstanding job mentoring the 

younger players and providing advice and 

guidance to help them reach their goals and 

potential. He will be greatly missed and we wish 

him all the best for his future. 

Bob Manning, long term volunteer of the West 

Adelaide Football Club, also relinquished the 

role of Under 18 Team Manager. Bobby has done 

an outstanding job as team manager and will 

continue his exceptional efforts as he continues 

his role of Chief Property Steward. 

Within our zone we continue to develop 

great relationships and have seen increases in 

participation thanks to the quality work of our 

Regional Managers David Bradley, Craig Oliphant 

and our Development Officer, Daniel Joyce. 

Daniel, with the help of West Adelaide players, 

led successful Auskick and school holiday football 

clinics which saw a number of youngsters having 

fun at City Mazda Stadium and gave them a chance 

to spend some time with their favourite players. 

As the Talent Development Manager, I spend time 

travelling around our zones educating coaches 

and players and watching numerous games. The 

West Adelaide Football Club is very fortunate to 

have such positive relationships within our zones 

and would like to thank all of the volunteers 

and coaches who work very hard with the 

development of the footballers. 

Our mini league program was again run admirably 

by the Branson family with Michael Cermack’s 

support. Howard Branson has served the West 

Adelaide Football Club in this capacity for 20 

years and has done an outstanding job. 2012 

was Howard’s final year and we cannot thank him 

enough for his work and effort over the years. 

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank 

Gary Irvine who coached the country side. Gary 

has been involved in our football club in a variety 

of positions and has helped a number of players 

take steps towards reaching their goals. 

Thank you to everyone who has helped support 

our programs in some way and I look forward to 

another successful year in 2013.

WESTONIANS REPORT 

The Westonians committee for 2012 was myself - 

Graeme Barton (President), Tony Davidson (Vice 

President), Troy Abbott (Treasurer), Kerry Carn 

(Secretary), Bernie Conlen, Jim Diamanti, Nick 

Diasinas, John Flanigan, Chris Higgins, Craig 

Lewis, John Pirakis, David Price, David Saint 

(Committeemen). 

The Westonians have conducted a number of 

successful fundraising events throughout the year 

including the Annual Greek Night, Westonians 

Raffle, Race Day Party at Morphettville and the 

Balaklava Cup Race Trip. 

The Greek Night, held at the start of the year, 

was a great night with traditional music and 

fantastic food. The night was a huge success 

with the help of the subcommittee including 

John Pirakis, Nick Diasinas, Jim Diamanti, John 

Kallios and Georgie Kantilaftas. 

The Westonians Raffle, with 1st prize winning a 

trip for four to the 2012 Toyota AFL Grand Final, 

produced the best return for some time thanks 

to the subcommittee of Nick Diasinas, Chris 

Higgins and I. Special thanks go to Fay Barton for 

her tireless work in keeping records of the books 

that went in and out of the Club and unpicking 

all tickets. 

The Race Day Party at Morphettville was again a 

great success led by the subcommittee of David 

Saint, Bernie Conlen, John Flanigan and Chris 

Higgins. A great day was had by all, filled with fun 

and fashion. John Flanigan and David Saint also 

followed up with the Balaklava Cup Race Trip. 

This is the 41st year of the Westonians and over 

the many years in excess of $1,000,000 has been 

raised by the Westonians for the West Adelaide 

Football Club. This year the Westonians raised 

$41,496 for the Club. 

This year the committee undertook a major upgrade 

to the Westonian Lounge. This was the first major 

upgrade since Jack Smith (Master Builder) built the 

Westonian room, toilets, store room and office area. 

The upgrade included new air-conditioning and 

heating, new lighting, adding a canopy over the 

bar with down lights, adding extra glass behind the 

bar, and a few coats of fresh paint. The Westonians 

would like to extend a special thank you to Nick 

Karasoulos from Harvey Norman for donating the 

air conditioning system and the TV in the wall unit. 

We would also like to thank Troy Abbott for donating 

the wall mounted TV and David Saint from Regency 

Shower Screens & Wardrobes for providing the glass 

for behind the bar. 

The subcommittee for the renovations included 

Jim Diamanti, Bernie Conlen, and Troy Abbott. 

Originally the upgrade was to be conducted in a 

staged approach; however it was cost effective 

to do it all at the one time. This created a cash 

flow issue, but generous donations from myself, 

Troy Abbott, Joe Tyney, David Price, Richard 

Sykes, Paul Sperling, Robert Day, John Pirakis, 

Bernie Conlen, John Garde, Nick Diasinas, Rob 

Kerin and Craig Lewis, enabled the short fall to 

be covered. 

I would like to thank Craig Lewis for his involvement 

on the Westonians Committee for the last two years. 

Craig has decided to focus more time on the Cheer 

Squad for the 2013 season. Oleh Bilyk joined the 

committee half way through this year, however due 

to health reasons he will not be re-nominating for 

the committee. 

The Westonians sponsored league/reserves player 

Michael Still for the 2012 season and continued to 

support the under 16 and 18 teams by providing 

vouchers for their Best on Ground Awards. The 

Westonians had the honour of presenting Ben 

Fisher with a silver goblet and glass trophy for 

his 100th league games. The Westonians also 

sponsor the Keith Reynolds Memorial Trophy 

that is awarded to the best 1st year senior player 

to progress from the underage ranks. This year 

the 2012 Keith Reynolds Memorial Trophy was 

presented to Rory Laird (photo below). 

I would like to thank the West Adelaide 

Cheerleaders who worked behind the bar at 

half time and after the games in the Westonians 

Lounge. They did an excellent job.

PAST PLAYERS & OFFICIALS REPORT 

The 2012 season was one of great change for the 

Past Players & Officials. We said goodbye to our 

old room in the car park and hello to our new 

location at the northern end of the Mound Bar 

(the previously named Stadium Room). 

This was our first year without long serving 

President, Jim Wright. Also, after many years John 

Flanigan left us to concentrate on his business 

venture. Jim, John and their wives Helen & Sharyn 

have served the Past Players & Officials extremely 

well and have given up so much of their free time 

to make our group such a success. We wish them 

all the best for the future. 

The committee now consists of Craig Bennetts 

(President), Steve Rechner (Vice President), 

myself - Bernie Conlen (Bookkeeper), Robert 

Day, Noel Harradine and Greg Summerton 

(Committeemen). 

Our season started like most with our Wednesday 

night raffle. It was unfortunate that due to work 

commitments, Steve Rechner wasn’t able to give 

the supporters in the bar his weekly Past Player 

interview. We are hoping to start up the Player 

Interviews in 2013. 

During the year we gained the services of Mike 

and Gayle Memmler. Mike helps out at the 

Wednesday night raffle & Gayle acts as bartender 

in the Past Players & Officials Room on match 

day. Both have a become a great asset to the Past 

Players & Officials. 

There were many highlights throughout the year, 

none better than our Annual Dinner held early in 

September. Although the numbers were down 

due the Crows being in the finals, every person 

who attended would have had a tremendous 

time. Special guest Michael Taylor was a big hit 

and gave great insight into his football knowledge 

and journey through his football career. 

The Past Players & Officials was formed to provide 

people who have served this great club with an 

area for them to share stories and memories of 

their time at the Bloods. Ten years ago we lost 

two of our future champions, Glen Knott and Ben 

Mitchell, in a tragic car accident. In May 2011 we 

lost another one of our very promising footballers, 

Corey Siemers. These young men can’t share their 

stories and good times as a West Adelaide player 

or the AFL stars they were going to be, but the 

Past Players & Officials are determined to keep 

their memories alive with the Knott/Mitchell 

Memorial Scholarship, this year won by Ryan 

Dijksman. We are also pleased to be sponsoring 

the Corey Siemers Award, which is presented to 

the best under 18 footballer representing the 

West Adelaide Football Club from the Riverland, 

this year won by Nathan Brown. 

On Saturday December 8th we entertained the men 

from our 2002 Under 17 & 19 Premiership Team (the 

team Glen & Ben were a part of). All who attended 

shared great times and were very appreciative. WAFC 

Head Chef, Greg McKeaver put on a great spread. 

Next year should be one to look forward to. Our first 

match is at City Mazda Stadium on Easter Thursday 

against Central Districts. This will be our Marquee 

on the Mound Day. Also next year we celebrate 30 

years since our 1983 Premiership. This will fall on 

our home game against Sturt in round 18. Finally, 

our Annual Dinner will be held the Friday before the 

SANFL Grand Final. Keep these dates free and check 

Facebook for more details. 

In closing, I would like to thank all who supported 

and helped make this year such a great success. 

Special thanks to Morrie Cappo for his seafood 

donation for our Annual Dinner, Kym Russell and 

all his wonderful staff and Cimarosti Bros Colonel

Wednesday night raffle.

WOMEN'S FOOTBALL 

2012 was a year of big changes for the West 

Adelaide Women’s Football Team and another 

successful year on and off the field. The team 

secured its 12th Senior Premiership, the first at our 

new home at City Mazda Stadium and established 

the inaugural West Adelaide Women’s Under 18 

Team. 

I wish to sincerely acknowledge the support of 

the West Adelaide Football Club, particularly 

Chief Executive Officer, Kym Russell, Head Coach 

Andrew Collins and Talent Development Manager 

Andrew Marks for the support the Club has given 

the women’s team in 2012. It has been a very 

successful transition and a partnership we hope 

to continue in the future. 

The transition to an SANFL club has provided 

significant opportunities for our playing group 

including the use of elite facilities, access to top level 

coaches, job opportunities for some of our playing 

group as coaches, trainers and fitness staff and the 

opportunity to have access to the professionalism 

that is a full time football club. 

The success of our team is also attributed to a 

long term sponsorship deal held with the Lord 

Melbourne Hotel which has provided the team with 

important financial support and a venue for social 

events throughout the season. A huge thanks to 

Kym and all his staff at the Lord Melbourne Hotel for 

again supporting us through 2012. 

In the football department, West Adelaide 

faced 2009 Premiers, Greenacres in the Semi 

Final and secured a Grand Final appearance 

with a 27 point win at Alberton Oval. The 

Grand Final would see a replay of the 

2009 Grand Final, however on this day the result 

would be different. It was a very tight first half 

with neither team able to break the game open. 

In the second half West came out and played the 

attacking style football which had seen the team 

succeed all year resulting in a 30 point win to West 

Adelaide and making it three premierships in a 

row for the group. Final score West Adelaide 6.8.44 

defeated Greenacres 2.2.14. 

A big thanks goes out to Andrew Marks who agreed 

to come on board as Senior Coach for the 2012 

season. The time and commitment Andrew devoted 

to the playing group was invaluable and we hope we 

can secure him again for the 2013 season. I would 

also like to acknowledge the continued support of 

volunteers Melsy, Dave and Gavin. The time all these 

people donate to the team throughout the year is 

paramount to our success. 

West Adelaide were well rewarded at the 

Dutschke Medal Night with Cass Hartley (photo 

below) winning her second Dutschke Medal 

and Fiona Clancey winning her 7th Glazbrook 

Medal as the Leading Goal Kicker, including the 

previous five years running. The team also had 

one representative participate at the 2012 AFL Elite 

Women’s Training Camp held in Melbourne in July, 

big congratulations to Danielle Cresp for her efforts 

at this camp. 

I would like to thank all the internal and external 

partners that keep the West Adelaide Women’s 

Football Team the successful and cohesive group it 

is and look forward to doing it all again in 2013.

HISTORIAN'S REPORT 

Last year I aimed to have researched ALL 

state players from 1879 to the present day 

and finally after five years, the task was 

completed. This season, a list of State Players 

who were selected from West Adelaide to 

play State football will be posted on our 

website – Keep an eye out for this… 

It is my hope that later this year I will be able 

to establish a working party of volunteers 

to scan photographs and pictures from 

our archives. We need to purchase an A2 

scanner and anyone with expertise with 

scanning and related technologies would 

be welcomed with open arms. We also have 

a number of old pictures that need to be 

restored. Once again, volunteers with this 

skill set would be invaluable as we try and 

preserve our history for future generations. 

Thanks to everyone who has supported, 

loaned and donated information and 

memorabilia to the club this past year. We 

have added over thirty full names and found 

two first names for players we knew little 

about. Also, we as a club are desperate to 

locate the following missing annual reports: 

1915, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1926, 1930 & 1931 

- This would give us a full set from 1908.
