WESTONIANS REPORT The Westonians committee for 2012 was myself - Graeme Barton (President), Tony Davidson (Vice President), Troy Abbott (Treasurer), Kerry Carn (Secretary), Bernie Conlen, Jim Diamanti, Nick Diasinas, John Flanigan, Chris Higgins, Craig Lewis, John Pirakis, David Price, David Saint (Committeemen). The Westonians have conducted a number of successful fundraising events throughout the year including the Annual Greek Night, Westonians Raffle, Race Day Party at Morphettville and the Balaklava Cup Race Trip. The Greek Night, held at the start of the year, was a great night with traditional music and fantastic food. The night was a huge success with the help of the subcommittee including John Pirakis, Nick Diasinas, Jim Diamanti, John Kallios and Georgie Kantilaftas. The Westonians Raffle, with 1st prize winning a trip for four to the 2012 Toyota AFL Grand Final, produced the best return for some time thanks to the subcommittee of Nick Diasinas, Chris Higgins and I. Special thanks go to Fay Barton for her tireless work in keeping records of the books that went in and out of the Club and unpicking all tickets. The Race Day Party at Morphettville was again a great success led by the subcommittee of David Saint, Bernie Conlen, John Flanigan and Chris Higgins. A great day was had by all, filled with fun and fashion. John Flanigan and David Saint also followed up with the Balaklava Cup Race Trip. This is the 41st year of the Westonians and over the many years in excess of $1,000,000 has been raised by the Westonians for the West Adelaide Football Club. This year the Westonians raised $41,496 for the Club. This year the committee undertook a major upgrade to the Westonian Lounge. This was the first major upgrade since Jack Smith (Master Builder) built the Westonian room, toilets, store room and office area. The upgrade included new air-conditioning and heating, new lighting, adding a canopy over the bar with down lights, adding extra glass behind the bar, and a few coats of fresh paint. The Westonians would like to extend a special thank you to Nick Karasoulos from Harvey Norman for donating the air conditioning system and the TV in the wall unit. We would also like to thank Troy Abbott for donating the wall mounted TV and David Saint from Regency Shower Screens & Wardrobes for providing the glass for behind the bar. The subcommittee for the renovations included Jim Diamanti, Bernie Conlen, and Troy Abbott. Originally the upgrade was to be conducted in a staged approach; however it was cost effective to do it all at the one time. This created a cash flow issue, but generous donations from myself, Troy Abbott, Joe Tyney, David Price, Richard Sykes, Paul Sperling, Robert Day, John Pirakis, Bernie Conlen, John Garde, Nick Diasinas, Rob Kerin and Craig Lewis, enabled the short fall to be covered. I would like to thank Craig Lewis for his involvement on the Westonians Committee for the last two years. Craig has decided to focus more time on the Cheer Squad for the 2013 season. Oleh Bilyk joined the committee half way through this year, however due to health reasons he will not be re-nominating for the committee. The Westonians sponsored league/reserves player Michael Still for the 2012 season and continued to support the under 16 and 18 teams by providing vouchers for their Best on Ground Awards. The Westonians had the honour of presenting Ben Fisher with a silver goblet and glass trophy for his 100th league games. The Westonians also sponsor the Keith Reynolds Memorial Trophy that is awarded to the best 1st year senior player to progress from the underage ranks. This year the 2012 Keith Reynolds Memorial Trophy was presented to Rory Laird (photo below). I would like to thank the West Adelaide Cheerleaders who worked behind the bar at half time and after the games in the Westonians Lounge. They did an excellent job. PAST PLAYERS & OFFICIALS REPORT The 2012 season was one of great change for the Past Players & Officials. We said goodbye to our old room in the car park and hello to our new location at the northern end of the Mound Bar (the previously named Stadium Room). This was our first year without long serving President, Jim Wright. Also, after many years John Flanigan left us to concentrate on his business venture. Jim, John and their wives Helen & Sharyn have served the Past Players & Officials extremely well and have given up so much of their free time to make our group such a success. We wish them all the best for the future. The committee now consists of Craig Bennetts (President), Steve Rechner (Vice President), myself - Bernie Conlen (Bookkeeper), Robert Day, Noel Harradine and Greg Summerton (Committeemen). Our season started like most with our Wednesday night raffle. It was unfortunate that due to work commitments, Steve Rechner wasn’t able to give the supporters in the bar his weekly Past Player interview. We are hoping to start up the Player Interviews in 2013. During the year we gained the services of Mike and Gayle Memmler. Mike helps out at the Wednesday night raffle & Gayle acts as bartender in the Past Players & Officials Room on match day. Both have a become a great asset to the Past Players & Officials. There were many highlights throughout the year, none better than our Annual Dinner held early in September. Although the numbers were down due the Crows being in the finals, every person who attended would have had a tremendous time. Special guest Michael Taylor was a big hit and gave great insight into his football knowledge and journey through his football career. The Past Players & Officials was formed to provide people who have served this great club with an area for them to share stories and memories of their time at the Bloods. Ten years ago we lost two of our future champions, Glen Knott and Ben Mitchell, in a tragic car accident. In May 2011 we lost another one of our very promising footballers, Corey Siemers. These young men can’t share their stories and good times as a West Adelaide player or the AFL stars they were going to be, but the Past Players & Officials are determined to keep their memories alive with the Knott/Mitchell Memorial Scholarship, this year won by Ryan Dijksman. We are also pleased to be sponsoring the Corey Siemers Award, which is presented to the best under 18 footballer representing the West Adelaide Football Club from the Riverland, this year won by Nathan Brown. On Saturday December 8th we entertained the men from our 2002 Under 17 & 19 Premiership Team (the team Glen & Ben were a part of). All who attended shared great times and were very appreciative. WAFC Head Chef, Greg McKeaver put on a great spread. Next year should be one to look forward to. Our first match is at City Mazda Stadium on Easter Thursday against Central Districts. This will be our Marquee on the Mound Day. Also next year we celebrate 30 years since our 1983 Premiership. This will fall on our home game against Sturt in round 18. Finally, our Annual Dinner will be held the Friday before the SANFL Grand Final. Keep these dates free and check Facebook for more details.
