This year marks the 21 st Design Awards for
the Ontario Region. Each year these design
awards have brought us an opportunity
to celebrate excellence in steel design
and construction. Over the past 21 years,
numerous projects have been presented
showcasing the versatility of structural
steel, as well as the capabilities of our
members in accomplishing the designers’
visions.
Congratulations to this year’s winners, and thank you to all participants,
each of whom is appreciated for their support of the structural steel industry.

Award Categories
Architectural
Buildings or other structures in which architectural considerations predominantly influenced the
design of the structure.
Engineering
Buildings, bridges, process plants or other structures in which engineering considerations predominantly
influenced the design and construction of the structure.
Green Buildings
Buildings or other structures in which steel has been re-used, recycled or used as part of a sustainable
development project, i.e. LEED certification.
Projects Constructed Outside of Ontario
Industrial buildings or other structures that have been fabricated by a CISC Ontario Region Fabricator
for projects outside of the province.
Only one winning project from each of the above categories will be selected for an Award of Excellence.
(Judges may cite one or more projects for an Award of Merit). Judges reserve the right to award or not
to award in each category based on the quality of the submitted projects.
Projects Converted into Steel
Buildings or other structures in which structural steel was chosen over other building materials
because of its unique structural qualities. For this category, an award will be presented to the “Best
Converted Project”.

E. H. Chapman, P.Eng.
exp Services Inc.
Edward Chapman is currently a Structural Project Manager with exp Services Inc. Prior to this
position, he was Vice-President and Senior Structural Engineer with Group Eight Engineering, in
Hamilton, one of the heritage companies of exp.
Mr. Chapman has over thirty-five years of experience in the design and constuction of steel
structures in the institutional, industrial and commercial sectors. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the
Provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick.
Mark Franklin
President, Baldwin & Franklin Architects Inc.
Mark Franklin is a founding partner of Baldwin & Franklin Architects, and has remained a principal
for over thirty years. He is currently responsible for all aspects of the practice - architectural design,
project development and client management for all major projects. The work of Baldwin & Franklin
is global. Mark has led architectural projects in Cancun, Auckland, Kuwait City, Abuja, Tehran, Singapore, Qatar and
throughout the United States. Working in distant and sometimes exotic locales has reinforced his understanding
that excellent buildings often evolve in non-traditional ways.
Carol Kleinfeldt
Principal KMA Inc.
Credited with vision and dynamic leadership, Carol has led the firm in diverse creative directions, and
to participate in the culture of the city. As chair of the Toronto Society of Architects in its centennial
year, Carol initiated a program of exhibitions and promoting design competitions for significant
public projects. As a board member, she participated in the establishment of some of the City’s landmark events
such as Word on the Street, Arts Week and the Toronto Arts Awards. She has spearheaded the firm’s commitment
to sustainable design. She is a LEEDAccredited Professional.

Ron Mazza, M.Eng., LEED AP, P.Eng.
Principal RJC
Ron has over thirty five years’ experience in structural design, and now leads the firm’s sustainable
design initiatives. He enjoys collaborating with a design team to develop creative structural solutions
that work for a building in its entirety. After graduating from the University of Toronto, where he was
awarded a National Research Council Scholarship, Ron earned a Master of Engineering degree from the University
of British Columbia specializing in structures. He joined RJC’s Toronto office in 1975.
Paul Mikolich, Chair, Jurors Panel
Marketing and Government Relations Manager, Gerdau Ameristeel
Mr. Mikolich has twenty five years of steel industry experience. In 2008 Paul’s role changed to
Marketing and Government relations for the Canadian operations. Prior to that, Mr. Mikolich held
various positions with Gerdau Ameristeel, with two of the three Canadian operations. Mr. Mikolich is
currently on the board of directors for the Whitby Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Institute of Steel Construction,
Steel Structures Education Foundation and Ontario Chapter of the Metal Service Centre Institute.
Joanne McCall, P. Eng.
Vice President for Bridges and Structures, Delcan
Ms. McCall is a structural engineer by profession, and has a background in design and project
management of bridges, marine structures, and other structures related to transportation
infrastructure. Ms. McCall is experienced in a range of specialty structures including movable
bridges, transit structures, and architectural footbridges, all with a strong focus on steel design and construction.
Steven Ploeger, M.Arch., B.Tech. (Arch.), OAA, MRAIC, Assoc. AIA, NSAA, LEED AP
Principal, Perkins+Will Canada
Steven is a Principal and the Science + Technology Market Sector Leader at the Toronto office of
Perkins+Will Canada. With over twenty two years experience in architectural management and
professional consulting, he has led the office’s growth in the design and construction of major
pharmaceutical and biotechnology projects, laboratory projects, law enforcement and academic projects. Steven is
currently the Principal-in-Charge of the Trent University Health & Life Sciences Project as well as the University of
Guelph School of Engineering Revitalization Project.
