Cancer Center Campaign Surpasses
$12 Million in Gifts
Mission Healthcare Foundation has
surpassed $12 million in contributions
toward the construction of the hospital’s
new outpatient cancer center, Foundation
Board Chairman W. Leon Elliston, M.D.,
announced January 14. The campaign,
which began in October of 2009, has
received more than 400 contributions
from individuals, family foundations and
local businesses. The largest donation
received is $5 million given by the North
Carolina State Employees Credit Union.
The grant from the Credit Union was the
largest in their Foundation’s history as
well as the largest single gift ever received
by Mission Hospital. This gift, in combination
with others, places the campaign
at 80 percent of its $15 million dollar goal.
“We are thrilled with the results to
date,” said Peter Fontaine, campaign chair
and cancer survivor. “We began this campaign
knowing that it was a difficult time
to raise money in our local economy, however,
the positive response we’ve received
from our community reflects the impact
that this disease has on so many lives.”
“We still have a significant amount of
money yet to raise,” says Fontaine. “This
is very hard work, but it is extremely
rewarding to know that we can all play a
role in enhancing the quality of cancer
care for future generations of Western
North Carolina families.”
The new cancer center is a five-level,
120,000 square foot outpatient facility on
the north side of Mission’s Memorial
Campus. It is scheduled for completion in
early 2012.
