The Flu: Limiting Visitation, Protecting Yourself and Others Mission asking for limited visitation Rates of influenza-like illness have risen enough statewide and locally that Mission is asking people not to visit people in the hospital unless they are the next of kin or their closest friend. Visitors are also being asked not to bring teenagers and children to the hospital. The request also applies to pastors visiting members of their faith community, except in end-oflife and critical situations. The limitation will be continued as long as is necessary. Data posted by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta indicates that the month of February generally leads the way in yearly flu activity. And as long as the cold weather continues and folks are confined to the indoors, flu will continue to be passed along. Yes, flu has been called the “gift that keeps on giving,” because it’s so easy to give and receive! We can expect a spike in the number of patients with respiratory infections as well as patients testing positive for Influenza A or B. PROTECTING YOUR PATIENTS • Review the Contact and Droplet Precautions section of the Infection Control MOD page, found by clicking on the green banner at the top of the MOD home page. Mission’s Restrictions On Communication and Visitation policy 200.096 states that we will begin limiting visitors when the NC activity rate reaches 2% of visits to providers with influenzalike illness. As of Thursday, January 27, Mission had seen more than 50 confirmed cases of influenza (both A and B). Across the state providers are also seeing 2009 A (H1N1) followed by Influenza B and then A/H3. Numbers typically peak in Protecting Yourself and Others From Flu Is it Cold or Flu • When an order is entered for either a viral respiratory panel or an influenza screen, the patient is to be put on Droplet and Contact isolation. • If the patient is transported anywhere during this time, he or she should be masked if a mask can be tolerated. • Once the test results are back, adjust the isolation to the respiratory virus isolated. • Influenza is Droplet only. The others are Droplet and Contact. • Offer masks or respiratory etiquette bags to patients who are coughing or have other symptoms of respiratory infection. • Wash your hands before and after each patient. • Stay at home if you’re sick. People who do come to the hospital are urged to wash their hands before and after visiting. The policy also says that when NC statewide levels reach 6% we will begin to mandate and enforce the limited visitation guidelines. As of Thursday, January 27, we were at 4.33% statewide. PROTECTING YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY. • Since the flu is most commonly spread by touching contaminated surfaces, you want to make sure that you wash your hands with soap and warm water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your eyes or nose, the “T-Zone,” and avoid crowds if possible. • Practice and demonstrate good “cough etiquette.” Cough into your sleeve. If you must use a tissue, use it once and throw it away. • Practice other good health habits such as getting plenty of sleep, getting exercise, managing your stress, drinking plenty of fluids, and eating nutritious food. Remember, vaccination, cough etiquette, hand washing and practicing other good health habits help reduce the effects of Influenza and other circulating viruses. Winter Slows Progress on Hospital Drive Here’s a rare view – an aerial photo of Mission construction covered in snow.And Mother Nature has impacted progress on Hospital Drive. Virtually no work has been done since mid-December and will continue to be very slow until March. On the sunny side, the AT&T relocation is complete. and we are still on track for completion in April.The renovation of the St. Joseph entrance is scheduled to begin around the first of March and completed by June. The Cancer Center construction project has reached the 50% completed stage. Since the building is dried-in, there is plenty workmen can do inside. HVAC startup is underway, permanent utilities are in place, gypsum wall board is in place on the lower level and first floor, and elevator installation is underway. On the outside, the parking deck pre-cast concrete structure erection is 75% complete.The remaining glass and brick installation will be completed as weather allows, and the exterior metal panels are in fabrication with installation scheduled for February.
